PMIC - Episode 21 - Salima Stanley-Bhanji CEO of Humainologie

Salima Stanley-Bhanji, CEO of Humainologie. Humainologie uses art, including film, to spread empathy, increase inclusion, and reduce discrimination.

Salima laughs about her decision to leave the lustrious beaches of Australia to come to Calgary. Although Salima shares that after coming to Calgary to complete her law degree and acquire some work experience, Calgary never let her go. There were many similar ties between her home town and new digs in Calgary plus some familiarity in the cityscapes.

Connor and Salima discuss how Humainologie has been navigating through COVID-19 and recently launching an online portal and component for Humainologie’s gallery. Throughout the last 4-5 years, Salima has created over 30 films. One of the most significant films was a seven-series film with the Canadian museum for human rights in Winnipeg that was filmed across Canada taking on on a variety of different topics.

Salima shares her thoughts given the social change experienced by the Black Lives Matter movement. Because Humainologie is in the realm of anti-discrimination work they love to see so many people become interested in educating themselves and becoming strong allies in anti-racism. For Salima and Humainologie it’s promising to see so many people inspired into action!

n this episode we have our second guest on the Proudly Made in Canada podcast, James Boettcher, chief custodian and CEO of Righteous Gelato! James shares the story behind Righteous Gelato, exciting new flavours ready to hit shelves this spring and how this time has really given him and his team the ability to pause and reflect at the moment and find ways to add the energy and spirit of Righteous back into what they do every day.

Tidbits including, 'always remember where you come from', 'give something for someone to say yes to', and 'don't ever let someone pick your brain - we're not zombies!'. Those along with so many others has allowed Connor and Dustin to not only become brand fans of Righteous Gelato and James but also friends and mentees. James is no stranger to adversity and navigating through COVID19, not an easy journey but with one tiny spoonful at time Righteous not only gives back with its purpose-driven brand but aims to preserve the environment and aid in sustainability for our beautiful world.
