Should Teens Cut Back On Screen Time?

Should Teens Cut Back On Screen Time?

Did you know that the average 12 year old spends about six hours a day behind a screen. Would you rather spend valuable time with your family or waste your time behind a screen. After reading this you will surely know the answer. Many people believe that being behind a screen is not very bad for you, however being behind a screen can be very harmful for many reasons. For example being behind a screen for too long can cause significant eye strain that can lead to needing glasses or contacts, especially when you are looking at a small screen like a phone. Another reason that it can be harmful is that when you are behind a screen for 5 hours a day your chance of obesity increases by seventy eight percent, such heavy use of any other screen besides a TV can increase your odds of obesity by forty three percent, says the journal of pediatrics. Some may argue that social media can involve teens all kinds of trends but this is not always true. For example studies show that forty five percent more girls and twenty seven percent more boys have felt left out since 2010 even though there is social media. Some may say that they have to use a phone to talk to their family, while this is true you are missing out on real life interactions. For example if you are on the phone all of the time you might never know how to talk in a real life conversation because you have never had practice, and if you have never had a chance to make eye contact and shake someone's hand then the conversation can turn out to be extremely awkward. Another reason is that if you were applying for a job interview then you would have to have a real conversation and if you don't know how to do that then you might not get the job. Or if you have a job that you have to talk all day and you weren't good at it because you haven't had any practice then people might not go to that store anymore. From all of this you now know how important it is to learn how to have a real life conversation. Many may argue that apps like geocacher can decrease chances of obesity. People also think that playing games  can increase creativity. But sitting inside of your house playing Minecraft can increase creativity and chances of obesity but if you are finding geocachers then you will decrease chances of obesity but your creativity will not rise. Not only is this a lose win but the two situations are oxymorons. Instead of doing this you could go outside and build a fort which keeps you active and raises creativity. So instead of staying inside maybe you should go outside and build a fort which is a win win.

Instead of wasting your time on a screen go spend time with your family, because family doesn't last forever. It is your responsibility to stop wasting your time on a screen it is now or never.
