Broker Carrier Summit Recap

Broker Carrier Summit Recap

Traveled to Kansas City last week to present at the Broker Carrier Summit specifically on my weight loss testimony, and why driver health is paramount. I highlight the event from my point of view, and why this has become the fastest growing event within the industry.

I also go into detail about where I am going, in business and as an athlete. Lombard Fit Motor Freight will become the brand that becomes what the industry knows as who changed the culture of health and wellness in an industry dying for doing their job. When you see someone wear Hoka, you know they run. When someone one day wears Lombard they're going to know they're an absolute savage who works in freight and logistics.

TruckerQuake in the Northeast with Gord Magill and Chris Thomas

On Friday April 5th, myself, Gord, and Chris went live to give a little MATS recap, we touch on Gord's recent appearance on Tucker Carlson and go into his recent article published in the American Compass. If it's one thing truckers can do, it's talk, and we just sent it for a couple hours on a Friday night reiterating our narrative on what the problems are in the industry, how to fix them, and beyond. Thank you to all the live viewers who tuned in.

Stay tuned for more live episodes! More to come.

Keeping Trailers Moving with REPOWR Inc.

Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder Patrick Visintainer, along with a piece of his Operations Team, Tucker Been join the show to talk about REPOWR. A FreightTech company founded in 2019 that can only be described as the AirBnB of the freight industries underutilized assets. From the largest fleets in the nation, to single truck Motor Carrier, Repowr is solving problems, and creating opportunities for everyone.

Right from their bio on LinkedIn,

"REPOWR is a community of networks where logistics companies seamlessly share assets to reduce waste & underutilization. The company connects shippers, carriers, 3PL's, leasing companies, and OEM's to a collaborative platform for interconnected asset-visibility. REPOWR brings visibility and value to the supply chain's normally inaccessible assets and aggregates that capacity to its Universal Trailer Network."

Autonomous Trucking: New Developments in State Legislatures

Autonomous Trucking: New Developments in State Legislatures

James Year rejoins the show along with Will Cook, the Founder of America Without Drivers, and Scott Douglas, the President of America Without Drivers.

We go back into the details about the dangers of Autonomous, and why this conversation needs to continue to happen. The technology that's coming should not really be stopped, but there has to be a better way to implement it then how it currently is.

Currently Indiana has legislation that would only allow autonomous trucks to be operated if a licensed CDL holder is within the vehicle, this legislation defeats the business models of companies like Aurora who want fully driver out capabilities. We go into details on why voters need to know, and should be more involved.

A correction to the podcast is HB1022 is a House bill in Indiana that is a co bill to SB57 in the Indiana Senate, not federal legislation.

Interstate Avocado's Retreat from Russia

Interstate Avocado's Retreat from Russia

Interstate Avocado is a driver who came on the show back in August to tell his trucking story. A soft market was getting his miles cut at one company, so he took a risk with going to drive for a carrier based in Florida owned by a Russian man named Igor. The promise of essentially unlimited miles, and a little fooling around with their ELD's was alluring, but eventually it almost broke him. He rejoins the show to tell all on the problems he has had the last few months.

For anyone listening to this, just know that if a trucking opportunity looks too good to be true, most of the time it is because it is.

To all of my freight friends, the MC talked about in this episode is MC1007299, do not do business with him, and if you can file any complaint, or know how we can run this fraud out of town, please reach out

Listen until the end for a positive Christmas message on how to control what we can control, and spread light and love heading into 2024

Anthony Hudson - Truck Driver and 2024 Presidential Candidate

Anthony Hudson is an owner/operator of a small trucking company outside Detroit. Like many in trucking, especially within these last few years, he's become discouraged by the current state of American politics. Instead of sitting and complaining, Anthony Hudson decided to take action. In the summer of 2022, he launched his campaign to run as a non-partisan candidate for President of the United States. He joins the show to tell his story, and about his campaign. His campaign is run just like an owner/operator would run it, the most minimalist way possible. He still continues to work and haul freight during his campaign, and has still been to 27 states, including multiple visits to the border.

He has challenged all truckers in America to donate $1 to his campaign.

Truckers and Health Insurance with Drew Ellefsen CEO of BMT Health

Drew Ellefsen is the CEO of Benefits Management Team, a Health Insurance agency that aims to provide affordable healthcare to those who need it the most. When it comes to truckers, 25% of truckers, especially those small/independent owner/operators, go without health insurance. However even on the company driver side, employer sponsored healthcare can be steep for someone being paid by the mile, and those deductions can add up, especially if you have a family. Drew joins to show to tell his story, and why his company has teamed up with our organization CDL Drivers Unlimited.

Episode 100 - In the Arena

Getting to 100 episodes was definitely a milestone I knew I would reach, but whatever happened in between I had no clue what it would be or what it would look like. I bring on some dear friends of mine I've made simply because I started making/posting freight related content. We go into what this show is starting to mean, we recap our time at the F3 Future of Supply Chain Conference, how we can really make an impact on changing the industry, and some insight on what the next 100 episodes will look like. I'll continue to tell my story, but also what's important is the stories of the men and women who work in this insane industry, especially the people who drive the freight.

Thank you to everyone who has ever lended me their ear. We're just getting started

Truckin with Dani

Dani and I crossed paths on tiktok, she makes a lot of videos about her day to day life, especially as she has become a gosh darn professional flatbedder. A fascinating story, motivated by her uncle to start driving she jumped behind the wheel in 2020. Her story resonates with all this show stands for in regards to activism. Her first company started out rough with a few trainers but got better. She goes into her time with JB Hunt and USXpress, and how she landed in just the right sweet spot of that small family owned carrier who takes care of their drivers.

Despite how much she loves the industry, we dive into why speed limiters would make her quit, and I know she isn't alone.

The 500 Pound Gorilla in The Room - The Rise of AI and Autonomous with James Year

James Year is an Airforce veteran who spent six years as a loadmaster for C-130's. After his time in service he attended Iowa and then on to Syracuse for his Master's. During a stint with the USPS he opened up his ears to a lot of new information and audiobooks, a lot of which was about the rise of Artificial Intelligence and what its implications might be, especially in transportation.

James embarked on his Master's project which is the overall impact of what AI means for the trucking industry, but the more he peeled the layers back of this onion, he learned a lot about how this complex issue is truly something all Americans need to be made aware of.

We have a candid conversation about all things mentioned above.

A New Path Forward

A New Path Forward

Earlier this summer I made the goal of transitioning off OTR by at least this fall, or by next summer. Getting backed into back in May essentially expedited that process. The time has come for me to get off the road, and I will be selling my truck. The first reason is family, and the second is truly the market. I got into business to grow something, not fight for the status quo.

Unfortunately for the ATA and the establishment, I'm not going anywhere. I'll still be working in transportation, AND in fitness. So they should still check under their beds at night before they go to sleep.

This was a hard episode for me to record, and I probably left out some things I wanted to say, but oh well! There is some raw emotion here, and I think that's what listeners, and our country deserve more of, authenticity.

Lora Andela, The Tiny Bullhauler

Lora Andela, The Tiny Bullhauler

Lora Andela, true to her name, is 5'3" and corrals bulls and other livestock and hauls them back and forth around the country. Aligned with New York's history she is of Dutch descent, and was raised in upstate New York near Cooperstown. Homeschooled by her parents she got into college and soon realized maybe this wasn't the path for her and trucking got into her mind. Her story is a fascinating one from hauling a milk tanker, meeting her boyfriend organically and not through a social media app, to now doing one of the toughest and most essential jobs in the freight industry.

The lesson in her story is to always make sure you teach yourself how to teach yourself, and to not let the distractions of the world or the validation of others stop you from doing whatever you want

You Were Born Perfect

You Were Born Perfect

I was driving today and had some raw material floating around my head that I felt like I needed to say. Yellow's absence from the media didn't sit right with me. I'm looking to contact Rep Colin Allred to come on the show and talk transportation as he is running for Senate against Ted Cruz.

I show some of my vulnerability in how I struggled with not being my true authentic self, and why we need to rally around each other.

I close with a great quote and remarks on why we are all truly born perfect.

David vs Goliath

David vs Goliath

- Waymo takes a huge L and is sidelining autonomous trucks

-Laredo is the largest land port in North America and is set to get even bigger. US Sen Ted Cruz has put together a coalition of TX politicians to help expedite the expansion of the World Trade Bridge as well as construct three more.

-Heartland Express and CFI are doubling down on the CDL Milling Industrial complex and I go scorched Earth on why this is important.

The US Supply Chain Has Been Compromised

The US Supply Chain Has Been Compromised

Recorded LIVE from Laredo, TX, the nail is in the coffin for Yellow. A leaked memo posted by Freightwaves says Yellow has stopped new shipments and will be having a company meeting on Friday. There is just no coming back, so I give my take on their final round up, and why the can was kicked to alleviate the strike.

Also got my first boost of clout on the internet as a "Course seller" who calls himself G Face posted a response over the weekend to a video I made about him four months ago where I call him a fraud. I pick apart his response and really peel back the layers of the onion on how the systems in place for our supply chain have failed and have compromised it. Mainstream media remains silent on this because in reality, the ATA enjoys that it's happening because it destroys small business to they can assume their quest for total control.

Yellow Injunction FAILS, Teamsters to STRIKE - JayL405Life a Yellow Driver Comes On LIVE to chat

Jay got his CDL in 2021 and started with Schneider. After quickly realizing the scourge of mega carriers he made his way over to Yellow (YRC) because of the work life balance and benefits. Along the way he started documenting on social media some of toxicity among Yellow's tenured drivers, who all long for the good old days but stay at Yellow primarily for the benefits.

Jay and I have a candid conversation about everything going on with Yellow, and why/how Unions can survive and do better going into the future. Perhaps Unions did their job with LTL freight and have created a standard to be met for those jobs. It may be time for those 22,000 Teamsters come next week to bring their unionization efforts to ATA affiliated carriers!

Teamsters Announce Strike at Yellow, TEAR is Out of Funds, AI in Hollywood, and Why I Fight.

This was another LIVE episode out of Pendleton, OR where I received intel from a YRC driver that Yellow would be gutting $50mil of benefits from drivers. The Teamsters say that it's a breach of contract and will be announcing a strike. TEAR which is aided by former guest of the show Desiree Wood, is out of money. TEAR would help drivers who were abandoned by bankrupt or criminal Motor Carriers. Lastly everyone thought AI and autonomous would kill truckers first, but instead the war has begun in Hollywood.

Evan Shelley CEO Founder of Truck Parking Club

On today's episode I talk with Evan Shelley the Founder and CEO of Truck Parking Club. I met Evan back at the Mid America Trucking show where they had a very active and entertaining booth. You know we take truck parking seriously on this show so I knew we needed to keep in touch. Essentially what Evan has created is an Airbnb for truck parking, circumventing the egregious zoning laws that take years to navigate in order to specifically build truck parking. Business owners can host their land/lots for free on this platform, and is also free for Carriers and drivers to sign up for. They're regularly adding new places to park and already have some in areas outside the port of Newark as well as Southern California. Listen ahead to hear the story of what got Evan into this venture!

Despite aspirations of being a pilot Goose learned how to truck the old fashioned way by learning on the job and backing trailers up on job sites. Goose has touched every corner of the industry except hauling livestock, doing stints in the oil field, van, reefer, flatbed, heavy haul, and demolition. His story is fantastic, and our conversation led us into the hot topics we discuss a lot on twitter like newer equipment, and the training of new drivers.

Business Updates, Paccar Recall, Teamsters, Dissolving the FMCSA

Episode 76 is here and I provide an in detail update on why I am not yet driving. Once again customer service remains a dying characteristic in trucking as the body shop I have been dealing with keeps missing the mark. But with this time down I've doubled down on myself, it has expedited me into working towards pivoting the business to get me weaned off OTR and into a fixed position to lay heavy artillery onto our enemies. A couple headlines crossed my eyes I wanted to share my opinions on and how/why they fire me up and are part of the underlying issues of why we're in this fight. I close it out with the DATA AND SCIENCE on why abolishing the FMCSA is a main priority.

MACK LOVIN from Hell Bent XPress

Jamie Hagen aka MACK LOVIN is the owner/operator of Hell Bent Xpress out of Aberdeen, SD. Humble beginnings growing up on a farm, Jamie would ride along with his dad by the time he was just out of diapers. Fast forward to the 90's and Jamie bought his first truck, where he claims he did everything wrong, and eventually went out of business in 1998. But he didn't just give up, he kept trucking and got back into business in 2010, where he still made mistakes but now a bit older and wiser, when he fell, he made sure to fall forward.

Essentially a brand ambassador for Mack trucks, we go into detail about his admiration for Volvo/Mack's technology and how their manufacturing is what made him profitable. From fuel mileage to customer service, they continue to be his truck of choice despite now only being 2% of the market share of trucks.

Hell Bent Xpress is hiring for their tank and dry van division so go checkthem out at hellbentxpress.com and follow Jamie on twitter @hellbenthagen

Daniel Kao - CEO of TruckSmarter

Daniel Kao - CEO of TruckSmarter

Daniel Kao is a Jersey boy who attended NYU. Initially gung ho for finance he read between the lines and maybe saw that this wasn't the way to go and immersed himself into the tech world. Starting with Square who really innovated how small businesses collect payments, he then moved on to work at DoorDash at the ground floor when they had barely 50 employees. In theory DoorDash was his first taste of the logistics world, and that's when Uber Freight came into play. From there he realized that the tech within the logistics industry wasn't carrier focused, and that's why we now have TruckSmarter. An absolutely FREE loadboard for carriers, as well as fuel discounts, and other amenities to help carriers run their business.

Dan loves to personally connect with carriers so feel free to email him at dan@trucksmarter.com

Dr. Mark Manera - CEO/Founder Supply Chain Fitness

Mark Manera grew up in the St. Louis area. A lover of both fitness and baseball he attended Maryville University of St. Louis where he was educated in physical therapy. Trucking found him the same way it finds many drivers, by accident. Some of his first patients walking through the door were drivers with tenure in the industry and he saw the damage done to one's body after trucking for several decades. He knew they deserved better, and that is why he started Supply Chain fitness. You can find Dr. Manera on all social medias by searching for Supply Chain Fitness, or his name.

Daniel Koors - Hoosier by Birth, Boilermaker by the Grace of God

Daniel Koors - Hoosier by Birth, Boilermaker by the Grace of God

Daniel grew up in Indiana and attended Purdue University for Agricultural Econ. While in college he obtained his CDL and his addiction to trucking spawned from there. He has entered and exited the industry, been a company driver as well as operate under his own authority. Primarily a flatbedder, advocacy for trucking fell into Dan's life essentially by accident. Through making friends over the road he wanted to be more involved in making trucking a better career, and a lasting one for the next generation.

He tells an amazing story about his travels to DC, and we really go in on the hardships of being over the road and how mental health for drivers is a very unseen and unspoken about problem.

The Ballad of Trucker Dave

The Ballad of Trucker Dave

Dave is a veteran trucker in the industry who has a fascinating story. He was raised by the old school union truckers and aspired to have a career like they did. Unfortunately he came in at the end of the Teamsters hayday and saw the folding and consolidation of several carriers. An absolute whirlwind of career that you'll have to listen to yourself to see all the moving parts. But now in the twilight of his career he has sold his truck and will be driving for Walmart's private fleet. And we go into detail in how Walmart is actually setting the example for what carriers should have done post deregulation, or at least should be doing now.

Dave is off social media, so if you see a Walmart truck around Reno, NV just do the old arm pump and hopefully it'll be him to honk back at you

Huge milestone for the show as we have reached 69 episodes! Isn't that NICE?! Former guests Reed, Dom Tullo, and Justin Martin from Freightwaves rejoin the show for an awesome conversation that goes from the ATA's fake driver shortage narrative, to Area 51. If you weren't bullish on freight communities before this episode, you will be after this one.

Blythe Brumleve - Everything is Logistics

Blythe Brumleve - Everything is Logistics

Blythe Brumleve got her start in freight marketing as an executive assistant working for a large 3PL in North Florida where she would eventually be tasked with handling the company’s digital media strategy. This is where she earned her chops as a marketer forced to do it all with a limited budget around the time when the inbound marketing concept was born. It was this job and a side-hustle blog that earned her eventual roles with a B2B marketing agency, on-air radio talent, and TV talent.

In 2018, she launched Digital Dispatch helping freight companies get online and grow. In addition to being a creative founder in freight, she hosts Cyberly on Freightwaves, is cofounder of Jax Podcasters Unite, and board member of the Transportation Marketing and Sales Association. Check out the Everything is Logistics podcast and follow her on social channels linked below for more freight marketing insight.

Desiree Wood -President of Real Women in Trucking

Desiree Wood -President of Real Women in Trucking

Desiree Wood began writing about her experiences as a single, Mexican-American female entering the trucking industry in 2008 on the “Ask the Trucker” blog. Using only a cell phone, her story entitled “A Day in the Life of a Lady Trucker” caught the attention of Dan Rather and became the basis for four of his investigative reports into truck driver training. In 2010, after realizing other trucking associations were not addressing poor and unsafe training nor sexual assault in any meaningful way, Desiree formed REAL Women in Trucking. Recognized internationally by policymakers and drivers, Desiree is lauded for her advocacy for truck drivers and specifically women entering the industry. She is an expert on entry-level truck driver training fleet practices and provides insight to law firms on truck driver recruiting, retention and training programs. She is sought out by scholars, universities, and the public sector who seek an authentic truck driver perspective. She provides support and leadership for legislative/public policy efforts including the Jason’s Law movement to improve truck parking, the FHWA National Coalition on Truck Parking, as well as state and local truck parking plans and programs.

Drayage Freight with Blake West aka the Shrimp King

Drayage Freight with Blake West aka the Shrimp King

On today's episode I have an awesome conversation with Blake West from northeast Mississippi who owns his own brokerage called Dray Logistics. Blake has an interesting timeline from owning a pizza place, selling insurance, and then getting in with CR England on their brokerage side. That was his door into the logistics industry. We do a nice deep dive on what drayage freight is and how its a whole different world compared to your general freight moving between distribution centers. You can find Blake on twitter @draylogistics or check out his website www.draylogistics.com
