Alexandra McGuigan, CEO & Founder, Inclusive Asset Management, 'Success is more about consistency than being smart', Episode 63

Alexandra McGuigan, CEO & Founder, Inclusive Asset Management, 'Success is more about consistency than being smart', Episode 63

To quote Melinda Gates, “When we invest in women, we invest in a powerful source of global development”. With that in mind, welcome to this insightful global women’s, diversity and inclusivity champion Alexandra McGuigan, the CEO and Founder, of Inclusive Asset Management.

Inclusive AM is a consulting firm focused on changing the face of the asset management industry. They do so by giving visibility to diverse investment talent and helping them to access wider networks to improve their chances at success.

‍The Asset Management industry favours larger fund managers as they are deemed less risky. The problem is, as assets under management grow, returns tend to decrease incrementally. This means that new innovative fund managers never make it to scale, and investment returns are stifled by size.

Inclusive AM’s goal is to change that and therefore change where capital flows go, to ensure the growth potential of innovative fund managers. Although women and minorities are overrepresented in top quartile investment performance, they end up managing one cent in the dollar. This presents an exceptional opportunity for allocators to have greater diversity in their portfolios. Inclusive AM works with diverse managers to change the demographics of the investment industry.

Prior to founding Inclusive AM, Alexandra was the Global Development Director for 100 Women in Finance and was responsible for all business development and corporate engagement.

A sales and marketing strategist with a specialisation in alternative investments, Alexandra has successfully helped international fund managers navigate and develop a presence in the APAC region, raising over $2.5 billion AUM from institutional investors.

Based in Singapore, Alexandra has also held senior roles at Tribeca Investment Partners, SHED Enterprises, and Investec, where she was responsible for developing and implementing sales and marketing strategy for products and new business opportunities.

Alexandra has worked with international fund managers, across asset classes including GAM, Adveq, Och Ziff, Diamond Asset Advisors and Qblue Balanced.

She started her career in Asset Management at BNY Mellon Asset Management.

Alexandra is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst and a CAIA Singapore Chapter Executive. She holds an MBA majoring in International Business from UTS and has a BA Media Communications, Sydney University. She has studied in Australia, France and the USA.

Although fewer females are in the stockmarket or are in leading positions as CEOs, CFOs, Founders, Fund Managers, Asset Managers or Wealth Managers, numerous studies have found that women investors over the long-term outperform their male peers. In this fascinatingly insightful Investing Matters interview Alexandra McGuigan will share with you the inspiring career path and investment journey that has taken her around the world, enabled her to speak various languages and light the entrepreneurial leadership spark in many men and countless women around the world in her quest to make the Asset Management industry far more inclusive.

Martin Gilbert, Co-founder & former CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management, "Recurring revenue and the quality of people", Investing Matters Podcast, Episode 50

Are you interested in learning our one man’s passion for investing changed the footprint of a city and the history of the Investment industry?

With that in mind, welcome to the 50th episode of the Investing Matters series with me Peter Higgins @conkers3 on Twitter. As a global Investing Matters audience, you are all in for an absolute treat because this interview is with one of the true Scottish, UK and global heavyweights of the independent asset management industry. None other than the multiple award-winning Martin Gilbert FRSE, co-founder and former CEO of Aberdeen Asset Manager and the Executive Chairman of AssetCo Plc.

Martin Gilbert, the humble and proud Chartered Accountant, was educated at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen, he then attended the same Law School as Alistair Darling (the former Chancellor of the Exchequer) at the University of Aberdeen, where is gained his law degree and his master’s degree in accountancy. After university, he joined Deloitte and qualified as a chartered accountant.

In 1982, he joined the investment department of local law firm Brander & Cruikshank, and a year or so later, with two others undertook a management buyout of its investment department. The new entity was called Aberdeen Fund Managers and had initial share capital of just £10,000 with £70m of assets under management, because as Martin now describes it in the 1980’s asset managers were a “small cottage industry”

Martin co-founded Aberdeen Fund Managers / Aberdeen Asset Management PLC in 1983 and was Chief Executive Officer from 1991 to 2017 (making him one of the longest serving CEO’s at the time). During that period Aberdeen Asset Management PLC grew, through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisition, to become one of the world’s leading independent asset managers with £308 billion of AUM.

In 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management PLC merged with Standard Life plc, to become Standard Life Aberdeen plc. On merging, Standard Life Aberdeen plc was the biggest UK-based asset management company and the second biggest in Europe. Martin was co-chief executive officer and subsequently vice chairman until he retired from Standard Life Aberdeen plc in September 2020. Martin is chairman of Revolut Ltd and Toscafund, deputy chairman of River and Mercantile Group PLC and senior independent director of Glencore plc, Chair of Scottish Golf, alongside several other directorships.

Please listen now to learn how Martin Gilbert FRSE, the shrewd dealer maker grew Aberdeen Fund Managers into the global investment firm that we knew as Aberdeen Asset Management. Martin shares lessons learnt from encountering significant lows, including his now dislike of geared investing products/ structures and his huge successes as a CEO and leader. He explains how he identifies transformational deals, the very best fund Managers and how he retains them. Why recurring revenues are vital, the successful straits required in order to achieve long-term investing success as a CEO, fund manager and an investor. Why ESG is important, being Chairman of The Net Zero Technology Centre and its role in the energy industry. His current favourite investing markets, plus why he sees huge value in UK mid cap and even more value in the UK small cap.

Martin shares an overview of Assetco Plc, a holding company for a group of wealth and asset management companies, for which he has a goal of growing into a FTSE 250 listed company. Given what Martin achieved with Aberdeen Asset Management and with the wisdom given to him by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, I’d say that with the foundations already laid across, Active Equities, Infrastructure Asset Management, Exchange Traded Funds and Digital Platform that there is every possibility that Assetco goes onto achieve significant success.

Philip O’Sullivan, Investor Relations at Bank of Ireland, what you should add to your investing armoury, Investing Matters Podcast - Episode 28

Welcome to this brand-new investing podcast from the London South East. My name is Peter Higgins, you can find me on Twitter @conkers3 and I will be your host for this series of Investing Matters podcasts.

What can you expect from the Investing Matters podcasts? A great question. You will find long form interviews with noteworthy veterans and experts from the investment and fund management industry. During these interviews each interviewee will share and impart their knowledge, learning and insights on what aspects of Investing truly matters to them and what in their view should matter to investors. We hope this knowledge exchange benefits all and enables all those accessing and listening to these podcasts to achieve even greater investing success.

With that in mind, welcome to episode twenty-six, which is with the hugely talented Philip O’Sullivan whose roles including being a former Chief Economist at Investec (Ireland) and presently as an Investor Relations professional with the Bank of Ireland.

Born in Cork, by the time Philip was 18 years of age and old enough to invest in his own name, it was the tail end of the 1990s. The Dot.Com bubble had not yet burst, and the mania had everyone talking about the markets. Ireland was going through a huge period of economic growth called the Celtic Tiger, this would later morph into a credit fuelled bubble that hit Ireland harder than most other countries when the Global Financial Crisis struck.

In 2000, Philip studied Finance at the University College of Cork and still to this day has meticulous records of his early investments. Some of which describes as making “rookie mistakes” with. Fortuitously, it was during his Finance degree that he did a placement for nine months in Goodbody Stockbrokers in Dublin. Then, as now, it was part of Allied Irish Bank. He worked on the Research team, and I must have excelled as they asked him to come back on a permanent basis when he graduated.

At Goodbody Stockbrokers, he worked on the sell-side, alongside some really gifted Equity Analysts and Economists, to pitch his own research ideas to the Sales team and the traders. He also got opportunities to go on Investor roadshows and attend sales desk briefings with some of the top CEOs, including those Ryanair, CRH or Paddy Power (Flutter). During his seven years at Goodbody Stockbrokers from 2004 to 2011, Philip gained a vast wealth of great experience - working across Economics, Equity Research and Equity Sales. Plus, a fantastic analytics grounding in both the macro and the micro.

In 2011 Philip went back to academia full-time and successfully completed a one-year MBA. Very shrewd though he did some financial journalism and blogging alongside his studies. As an accomplish write, he wrote the markets column for an Irish magazine called Business and Finance, some columns for the business section of the Irish edition of The Sunday Times.

It was quality of his articles in the Sunday Times columns that landed him the job of Chief Economist at Investec Bank in Ireland from 2012 onwards. His Chief Economist role was a very broad one that encompassed; work on the Bond desk; supporting the Wealth and Investment business; presenting to Treasury clients on interest rates and exchange rates; working alongside Corporate Finance on client pitches; Equity Research; supporting the Sales Desk in its client engagement and much more.

In 2019 Philip was headhunted to work in Investor Relations for The Bank of Ireland which is the biggest Bank in Ireland. Whilst the role of Investor Relations is very different to being a sell-side analyst or an Economist. It is the combination of all the skills and experiences that Philip has learned over nearly a quarter of a century, that makes him a vital individual in the continued growth of The Bank of Ireland Group with respect to its regional, national and global clients.
