Episode 210 - Justin Lyons

Justin Lyons, best known as the guitarist for The Band Six (the touring band for Korean pop group BLACKPINK), explains the K-pop phenomenon and shares how he became the go-to guitarist for YG Entertainment. Lyons (stage name: Guitar Slayer) shares how he got his first break, what he learned from his early years of touring with Eric Roberson, and the artists (Prince, Jimi Hendrix) that have inspired his aesthetic and playing style.

We talk about his creative projects—from a signature guitar to a footwear line and a production studio—to his quarantine experience, which involved starting up a video series, and even working at Amazon.

We also play a clip from the latest single, "As Is."

Episode 209 - Philip Lassiter

Episode 209 - Philip Lassiter

We're back! In this episode, trumpeter / arranger / producer and 11x GRAMMY winner Phil Lassiter talks to us from the Netherlands, where he and his family have lived for almost a year. After college, he moved to Texas for a job, and as he says, that's when he truly felt like "school was in session," musically speaking. He tells me about how he met Michael League and the origins of Snarky Puppy, growing up in the gospel scene and recording/arranging with Kirk Franklin, and what is was like working with the late Justin Townes Earle.

Phil spent a few years touring with Prince and was in charge of putting together an 11-piece horn section, and he gave me the details on the audition process and what it was like working with the Purple One. (If you're into stories about Prince, this episode is for you.)

We also discuss his forthcoming album, "Live in Love," and how it came to feature musical legends like TOTO's David Paich and Juan Luis Guerra.  We also share a clip of "Sugar Coat Me (ft. Durand Bernarrr), the latest single off the LP.

Episode 207 - Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians)

Episode 207 - Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians)

Kenny Withrow is the guitarist for Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and is one of my favorite guitarists in general. We talk about the new EBNB album "Hunter and the Dog Star," from the way in which it's structured to how it differs from previous records.

Kenny also talks about the Grateful Dead, its influence on his musical career, and what it was like playing with Jerry Garcia. We also chat about playing Dead tunes in Dallas, and why his favorite group to collaborate with is his own band (EBNB).

I loved hearing Kenny's take on jamming, practicing, and creating—and how he and Edie start the songwriting process. As Edie puts it, "there's stories all around if you pay attention. It's limitless...and they want to be told."

Watch an exclusive performance from Kenny Withrow on our YouTube channel.

Episode 204 - Jess Garland

As a composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, community organizer, and founder of a local nonprofit, Jess Garland is, quite frankly, the definition of a boss babe. She's an artist in every sense of the word.

The classical guitarist and harpist is also a seasoned teacher, and in this episode we talk about how music lessons have been a saving grace for many students—particularly during the pandemic.

We talk about how Jess got her start and how she stays grounded amidst her insane schedule. We also discuss how she’s raising awareness about social issues and environmental racism through her multimedia projects, and how she’s affecting change at the local level.

Finally, we share a clip of her latest single, “Glow.”

Episode 203 - Robert "Sput" Searight (pt. 2 of 2)

Continuing our conversation with Robert "Sput" Searight (six-time Grammy winner, drummer for TOTO, drummer/producer for his band Ghost-Note, and more), we talk about funk music as a movement, why he creates music "for the universe," and the new generation of musicians he admires.   Sput also tells me why he loves the '80s, and why George Michael and Boy George simply "don't get enough credit. Toward the end of the episode, I ask him about his mantra of "embracing the mistakes," particularly in the recording studio. Episode 201 - Jackie Venson

Episode 201 - Jackie Venson

To say that Austin's Jackie Venson has been blowing up lately would be an understatement. The coolest part is she's done it all on her own—that is to say, independently and without the help of a label or record deal. Venson released five (yes, 5!) albums last year, including "Live in Texas" and "Vintage Machine; her fan base has been growing exponentially; and it seems like she's loving every minute of it. (She also has some of the best metaphors and you'll have the pleasure of hearing some in this episode.)

Through frequent multi-platform streaming and steady Bandcamp sales, Venson talks candidly about how she's been able to thrive as a musician, despite the pandemic and in spite of the "industry." We also talked about her alter ego, jackie the robot, and the journey that led her to write "Vintage Machine," her sophomore studio LP.

Buy Jackie Venson merch/music on Bandcamp, and catch her on all the streaming platforms (Twitch / YouTube / Reddit / Instagram / TikTok). And if you've been digging the podcast, feel free to add something to our proverbial tip jar on PayPal. Thanks for listening!

Episode 114 - Kwinton Gray

Episode 114 - Kwinton Gray

I hope y'all have as much fun listening to this episode as much as I had fun talking to Dallas-based musician Kwinton Gray. We talk about Kwinton's diversified career thus far, from touring with a dance company and performing in theater productions (Hair, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) to playing keys for Janet Jackson. Also, he plays in like, four bands (at least) at any given time, and also manages to teach music classes to kids.

We dive deep into the genius of Disney ("It's about songwriting and storytelling," he says), the awesomeness of "Hamilton," guilty pleasure songs, influential film composers, '90s nostalgia, and oh-so-much more! We've got a ton of show notes for this episode (see below). I also highly recommend the latest Kwinton Gray Project livestream.

At the end of the episode, Kwinton mentions Ashleigh Smith's "In the Rain," which he co-wrote, and which you might have heard on SiriusXM's Watercolors. Episode 112 - Lou Charle$

Episode 112 - Lou Charle$

Who is Lou Charle$? Find out in this episode in Ep. 112, when Jaimie Siegle talks to the up-and-coming Texas rapper about growing up in Cairo, going to TCU, and making the decision to do music full-time. Having grown up on Houston rap, Lou reveals how he met Paul Wall—at a Beto rally, of all places—and wound up collaborating with The People’s Champ on “Showin’ Out,” which was released this spring. (We play some of it here, too!)

He shares his experience at the George Floyd / Black Lives Matter protests in Fort Worth, gives a little insight into his forthcoming full-length album, and reflects on how he’s honed his craft and found his voice over the last five years.

Listen to Spotify’s “This is Lou Charle$” playlist or find him on IG. His latest music video for “Hate Me 4 (ft. Brandon Marcel)" drops the same day as this episode, so might as well check out both, right? ;)

Episode 110 - Norman "MouseQuake" Barrett

Episode 110 - Norman "MouseQuake" Barrett

I love a good story, but even more so when there's a good storyteller that comes with it. Such is the case with Norman "MouseQuake" Barrett, an audio engineer and producer who is as full of wisdom and great advice as he is of unbelievable anecdotes. An Air Force veteran with degrees in English and audio engineering (plus a few certifications), he is an advocate of reading and continuing education, as well as self-discipline and brutal honesty.

Today he works with artists ranging from Rakim Al-Jabbaar to an up-and-coming East Texas rock band. His latest project, "Love's Paradox," features award-winning musicians and vocalists in a composition about, well, love: the good, the bad, and the bittersweet.

We also play an unreleased track mixed by MouseQuake from Pimp C's 2015 posthumous album "Long Live the Pimp," on which Mouse mixed several tracks.  From working under Grammy Award-winning producer Gerald Hall in Atlanta to Houston's Mr. Lee, MouseQuake has had a lifetime of experiences that have led him to where he is

Episode 109 - Joshua Ray Walker

Joshua Ray Walker is putting the storytelling back into the tradition of Texas country music. In this episode of the Lone Sound Magazine Podcast, we talk about the making of his sophomore album "Glad You Made It" (State Fair Records), released last month. He tells me about his 2019 tour through Scandinavia following the success of his debut LP "Wish You Were Here," and why his surprisingly large fan base there has such an appreciation for Texas songwriters.

We talk about what he's been up to during quarantine, which has been quite a lot: recording with Ottoman Turks (the other band he's in); preparing to record his third album (he already has the title!); working with State Fair Records label; and launching High Wide & Handsome, a size-inclusive clothing brand.

From staff furloughs to drive-in shows, Hyacinth shares her take on the industry. Episode 107 - Salim Nourallah

Episode 107 - Salim Nourallah

Salim Nourallah is totally aware of the fact that the phrase “Texas music” carries with it a certain connotation,  and he’s been defying the stereotype since he figured out how to make a living as a musician. An award-winning producer, studio owner, record label co-founder and solo artist, Salim is a lot of things.

At his core, though, he’s a songwriter; just check out the volume of music he’s released on Bandcamp. Aptly titled “Let’s Be Miserable Together,” his latest EP was released in May of this year and we’re sharing a catchy tune from it in this week’s episode.

Salim also tells me about Pleasantry Lane, a modern recording studio with a mid-century modern feel that you wouldn’t know existed (and you wouldn’t be able to find) unless someone told you. It’s also the headquarters of the label Palo Santo Records, whose niche is discovering up-and-coming artists not necessarily from Texas.

We talk about how his friendship with Dallas musician Rhett Miller developed, and he gives me the back story on a few songs on which he’s worked with Rhett and the Old 97’s. (Also, if you are a fan of the Old 97’s, Salim has some scoop about their new album “Twelfth.”)

Finally, the National Independent Venue Association needs our help, and the Houston Arts Alliance would love your participation at its Arts Town Hall. (NIVA recently endorsed the #SaveOurStages Act to offer relief to music venues affected by the pandemic. Read more about that here.)

Episode 106 - Lauren Childs

Episode 106 - Lauren Childs

We cover a lot of ground in this week's episode with Fort Works Art's Lauren Childs—gallery owner, artist, mom, and constant supporter of the arts. Her gallery quickly became one of my favorite places in Fort Worth when it opened 2016, first for its unique roster of artists but eventually for its continued dedication to bringing international attention to Texas artists.

In Episode 106, we talk about some of my favorite artists from previous Fort Works exhibitions (Dan Lam, Marshall Harris, Kate Simon), as well as a few of my favorite things: art activism, Art Basel, the Burning Man experience, and how we can help one another as we navigate these uncertain times.

We also explore the collective nature of the Fort Worth arts scene, the state of art in 2020, and how she's remained busy organizing fundraising efforts for the city's creative community through her nonprofit foundation, Gallery of Dreams. (Head's up: the latest grant initiative for musicians is called Sounds of Resilience—details here.)

Thanks for listening! Please consider supporting the National Independent Venue Association and Houston Arts Alliance. Find out more about HAA's local events and artist outreach programs on Facebook. Reach out to them on Facebook to learn more. #SaveOurStages

Episode 105 - Charlie J Memphis

Episode 105 - Charlie J Memphis

Charlie J Memphis, songwriter/musician and bass player for Vincent Neil Emerson, is wise beyond his years and one of the most self-motivated musicians I know. Here, we talk about how the Texas Gentlemen welcomed him into the music scene and what it was like touring with Vince, Colter Wall, and Charley Crockett. How is he pivoting to make money during this pandemic? And finally, why are Texans so dang proud?

You'll also hear an exclusive live performance of Charlie's latest single, "Trophy Wife" (full version on our YouTube channel).

Find Charlie J Memphis' music on all streaming platforms, and catch him hosting Memphis Mojo Hour every month on Deep Ellum Radio!

Also, please check out our messages from Foundation45 and KNON 89.3! Give what you can to support these organizations that continue to support our community.

Episode 104 - Rania Khoury

Episode 104 - Rania Khoury

Singer/songwriter Rania Khoury and I get into some deep talks in this week's episode: dealing with anxiety, especially amid today's current events; managing expectations in relationships; and whether or not we inherit past trauma from our parents. Concepts of mental health, desire, love, and loneliness are addressed in Rania's ultra-catchy third EP "Tired/Wired," and I loved chatting with Rania about how she's bringing authenticity and real talk to the pop landscape.  You'll also get a preview of her latest single off the EP, called "Wait for Me."

Episode 103 - Gino "Lock Johnson" Iglehart

Episode 103 - Gino "Lock Johnson" Iglehart

Where do I even begin to describe how special it was to speak with Gino "Lock Johnson" Iglehart ... I mean, this man is a legend. Remember that Erykah Badu album, Mama's Gun? (And if not, please Google it.) Well, Gino was a producer and musician on that album, and that's kind of what jumpstarted his career in music. During his time working with Ms. Badu, he had the opportunity to hone his songwriting skills and learn the ins and outs of the industry. Two decades later, Gino remains "in the business" in multiple capacities: owner of events/promotion company Lock Johnson's Playground, which is cautiously rolling out a few live music events this summer; drummer for Kirk Thurmond and the Millennials; writer/producer for his own band, IvorY JeaN; promoter/brand ambassador for the GroundUP community; marketing consultant for up-and-coming artists; and founder of his new music label, Playground Recordings.

And yes, we do talk about the pandemic. We talk about the protests, and the state of affairs in Texas and nationwide. We talk about the necessity of gathering together—safely—and digging deeper to find ways to create and collaborate as the music industry continues to evolve.

Episode 102 - Alec Jhangiani

Episode 102 - Alec Jhangiani

Alec Jhangiani is a co-founder/principal of Fortress Presents, the company behind Fort Worth's Fortress Festival that launched in late April 2017. (Like most everything else this spring, the festival was canceled due to COVID-19.) In this episode, Alec talks about the likelihood of Fortress Festival 2021 (book your calendar for April 24-25 ... in pencil) and the drive-in concert "trend." He's got his hands in a few other projects as well, from a new live music venue in Fort Worth (hint: Wild Acre Brewing) to a concept album he's producing called Alamo Bootleg. Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see y'all next Friday!
