The Sweetest Recipe For Success

The Sweetest Recipe For Success

Last year, Mignon Francois and her boutique cupcakes @thecupcakecollection celebrated 10yrs of “sweet success” in Nashville, TN and she opened a second location @thecupcakecollectionnola in her hometown of New Orleans. As with every success, there is a story behind it! In this episode of The Loni Swain Show, Mignon joins me to share hers. Her joy is as infectious as her smile and her story is a beautiful reminder that faith and positivity are the key ingredients to any recipe for success.

Mignon Francois is the Founder and CEO of The Cupcake Collection (TCC) in Nashville, TN and New Orleans, LA. While crunching numbers and creating the craze are amongst her job requirements, her favorite responsibilities within this role are giving hugs, listening, and mentoring her team and other up and coming entrepreneurs who seek after her grass roots experience.  Using her “Follow Your Spirit” approach, Mignon developed an iconic flavor that drew lines and attention to the hip nature of her Historic Germantown neighborhood that hadn’t seen this concept developed prior. The success of TCC  became the icing on the cake with over 5 million cupcakes sold in 10 years.

Overcoming All The Obstacles

Overcoming All The Obstacles

Hard things are hard, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth doing. Actually, most things that are worth doing, have a hefty price to pay. This may look like invest of time, energy and sometimes even blood sweat and tears. In these moments, we have to ask ourselves how bad to you really want it? Or maybe the more appropriate question is "how badly do you want to change your current reality?" Because if you keep quitting every time things get hard, you're never going to be able to change your reality. You will always be in the same space. Let's talk about it. Press play. Then slay the day...and the week..the month...all the hard things!

Re-connecting with YOU

Re-connecting with YOU

Who were you, before you were told who you should be? I’ve seen this quote a few times and its always made me pause and reflect. Last night I watched the Netflix original film Nappily Ever After starring Sanaa Lathan and this quote was basically the theme. So on this Self-Care Sunday I ask you, who were you, before you were told who you should be? Can you even remember? For some of us, its been so long since we have asked this question or given it any thought that we may not know where to begin. I’m discussing it further in the podcast and here are three tips from TinyBuddha:

1. Get in touch with your inner child.

(The book I referenced is The Artists Way by Julia Cameron)

2. Become more aware of your thoughts.

3. Follow your intuition.

Losing Yourself In Marriage + Parenting

Losing Yourself In Marriage + Parenting

These days, it’s sometimes hard to recall who you were before marriage and parenthood. Sure, you’re still you, but having kids and building a life with your partner can sometimes make it difficult to step outside of your roles as parent and spouse. How do you make time for you when other people rely on you for their basic needs? How do you not feel guilty stepping away and putting you first? How do you find time to remember and rediscover who YOU are, outside of the titles of parent or spouse? We are discussing how to find that balance in today’s Girl Talk edition of the podcast!

Starting Over

Starting Over

The logistics of starting over can often be so daunting that we would rather remain in a familiar misery, than risk an unknown happiness. We can get so bogged down in the details that we even convict ourselves that starting over is impossible, or that we are too old, too late, or have invested too much time, money or energy to walk away from something or someone. We also sometimes think that starting over is considered a setback. I'm here to tell you- don't believe the lies! Its never too late or impossible and starting over is often a setup for something greater than what you walked away from. Each day is an opportunity to rewrite our story. I'm sharing some tips as I myself am starting over for a new life beachside in Miami, Florida!

Episode 50: Go Where You Are Celebrated

Episode 50: Go Where You Are Celebrated

I've signed off all of my radio shows, podcasts and newsletter with " Go where you are celebrated and appreciated, not just tolerated." for at least 10 yrs now. Why? What do I actually mean by that? I'm explaining how I came to embrace this phrase, why I encourage us all to and how I'm exercising this mantra as I embark on my next adventure.

I share this as a reminder that you are the author of your story and your life. If you aren't happy or feeling appreciated or celebrated - you can rewrite your story at any moment. Where and with whom do you feel celebrated and appreciated? Go there! ASAP. Life is too long or short not to.

Episode 45: Self Care Sunday - Stop Playing Yourself Small

There are people less qualified than you, out here living the life of your dreams and doing things you want to do, all because they dared to bet on themselves. I'm guilty. We play ourselves too small. Why do we undervalue ourselves and overvalue the opinions and validation of others who claim to be experts on things that we have had our own experiences with. We are often reluctant to recognize that our experiences are valid and valued and our voices matter. In life and relationships we say we want things, but shy away from putting ourselves out there to get them because we are afraid of failure or rejection. Lets talk about it.

Episode 43: Self Care Sunday - Embracing Imperfection

Something I have struggled with all of my life and still struggle with is the constant quest for perfection. I impose this standard of perfection upon others, and most adamantly upon myself. Its exhausting and pointless, because ultimately its unobtainable.

I have a tendency of wanting to scrap an entire idea, place or person because they don't live up to the image in my head of what or who they should be. I fall in the box of things to be discarded sometimes too. In the effort to make constant improvements, I am constantly evaluating how myself, others and circumstances could be better and thus, perpetually dissatisfied.

In this podcast, I'm sharing a Japanese art that embraces the beauty in brokenness and imperfection that reminds me to focus on the beauty instead of the broken-in ourselves, others, and in our circumstances.

Episode 41: Self Care Sunday - Who's Determining Your Self-Worth

Episode 41: Self Care Sunday - Who's Determining Your Self-Worth

Self-worth: How many of us have it? Many people say they love themselves and value themselves, but their actions and inactions say the opposite. They speak negatively about themselves to themselves and sometimes aloud, they mistreat their bodies and usually the biggest giveaway is how they allow themselves to be mistreated by others. Culturally we place a lot of value on titles and partnership and if we aren't coupled or outfitted with the title, we don't feel we are worthy. In this episode lets explore who and what we are allowing to determine or damage our "self-worth" other than ourselves.

Episode 35: Self Care Sunday - Examining Our Self Talk

Today's focus is getting our self-talk in check! We are constantly talking to ourselves. That inner monologue is called self-talk. That self-talk has the power to not only affect our mood, but also our confidence and our self-esteem. Its so very important that we focus on creating POSITIVE self-talk that will uplift and encourage us. For me, that has been a challenge. I'm a Virgo and I'm over-analytical and always focusing on what can be better or improved. I learned a new mantra and I'm challenging myself, and YOU, to employ it this week. Episode 32: Letting Go Of The Idea Of What Or Who You "Should" Be

Societal and parental pressures are real. As children, our parents imprint upon us their views of what is and is not important in life. Its usually not until we are independent adults that we can even have the space to reflect on our choices and what matters most to us. Then the real work begins of unpacking what isn't ours to get down to who we are and who we truly want to become. This process can be not only really scary, but also really painful. There is a lot of guilt that can come with the fear of disappointing those that we love and love us in return, as well as the fear of straying off the beaten path and making our own way through the unknown.

Kimberly Doley knows this transition very well. Learn more about her journey and how she uses her life experience to help others let go of the life they "should" have to find one that is more fulfilling and purpose-filled.

Episode 28: Missing Mom For Mother's Day w/ Grief Counselor Kristen Machado

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, (Sunday, May 13) I wanted to dedicate a special podcast to those who may be missing their mother's on this day. I have several close friends who have lost their mother's (recently and not recently) and I was at a loss for how to best support them not only through their grieving process, but also with the upcoming holiday. I'm sure this is a tough time for anyone that's missing Mom at this time, so I enlisted the expertise of licensed psychoanalytic therapist and grief counselor Kristen Machado.

Kristen received her Bachelors of Science in Psychology at Charleston Southern University just outside of Charleston, SC. She then went on she went on to attend graduate school at Wheaton College Graduate School in Wheaton, IL, about 30 miles west of Chicago. In June of 2016, Kristen moved to New Orleans to get a change of scenery and take part in a continuing education program with the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center.
