Lots of Opportunity for Those Who Want to Make the World a Better Place! (Episode #100)

Lots of Opportunity for Those Who Want to Make the World a Better Place! (Episode #100)

Hi there, Looking Forward listener! Before I go any further, I want to say "thank you" to everyone who’s been a Looking Forward listener over the past, roughly 14 months! The comments and interest shown in this podcast have led me to a place I never imagined I’d get to: 100 episodes!! Yes, that's right: This episode with Andrew Schulman is the 100th we’ve produced and broadcast since Looking Forward began back in June 2020. So, thanks again! I want to assure you, I’ll be working hard to make the next 100 episodes of Looking Forward even better! In Part 2 of this two-part series, Andrew Schulman will tell us what impact COVID has had on fiscal sponsorship, where he sees this rather underground industry of sorts going in the near future, and, as I mentioned at the outset, he’ll speak to some of the myriad opportunities individuals may find in that world. And Andrew isn’t going to stop there. He’ll also provide some great tips for those who want to enter the non-profit sector’s fiscal sponsorship community, whether on the fiscal sponsor… or project side of the equation. OK, now let me tell you just a little bit about our guest expert, Andrew Schulman. Andrew Schulman is the founder and a principal at Schulman Consulting: America’s only consulting and advisory firm exclusively focused on the nonprofit fiscal sponsorship sector. Schulman Consulting guides dozens of clients-- we’re talking about fiscal sponsors and sponsored projects, large and small-- in overcoming a variety of challenges. You’ll find more about Andrew, his business, and the book he recommends about fiscal sponsorship by visiting www.jeff-ostroff.com If you like this episode, please give it a “like” or a positive review on the podcast hosting site you listened to it, and hey, you can let me know about that, too, if you want. :)- You can also let me know if you have any ideas for trend topics or guest experts we might want to feature on Looking Forward. And while you’re at it, why not tell a family member or friend about this episode or any of our nearly 100 other Looking Forward episodes. Any one of them will not point you in the direction of a potential global opportunity, it will also make for a great conversation!
Looking Forward is THE podcast about how you might capitalize on OPPORTUNITIES created by global trends that will continue in the future. Think... jobs, careers, business start-ups, freelancing, entrepreneurial ventures, investments, or life enrichment. Guests are experts in their field, and most are C-suite executives, household names, authors, and/or from prestigious universities or similar organizations. Looking Forward is a great source for media outlets, podcast producers, telecom companies, audio publishers, etc. to include as part of their content. This is what MTN, the gigantic telecom company in Africa, will soon do. Mobile Phones and Technology: Past and Present...with a Bit of the Future Thrown In

Mobile Phones and Technology: Past and Present...with a Bit of the Future Thrown In

Hi everyone. If you’ve been around over the past few decades, you’re probably as amazed as I am about how much our phones have changed over the years, not only in their design, but in how and where they are used.

In Part of 1 of this two-part series, we'll discuss how our phones have evolved into complex mobile devices over the past 50 or so years. We’ll also learn about how the modern-day cell phone almost never came into being, how COVID-19 has affected our use of mobile phones, and much, much more.

And who better to speak to about all this than the person credited with inventing the first mobile cell phone, Martin Cooper.

Now in his 90’s, Martin Cooper is the chairman of Dyna LLC. He also serves on the boards of several other public and private companies. Marty is a pioneer in the wireless industry and was responsible for many of the business and technological concepts behind today’s paging, mobile radio and cellular businesses worldwide. Many of Marty’s innovations were introduced during his 29-years working with Motorola.

Marty’s been involved in numerous business start-ups in his career. He’s also been granted nine patents, and won many prestigious awards, including being named one of “Time Magazine’s Top 100 Inventors in History.”

The man recognized as the “father of the modern cell phone,” Marty Cooper is also the author of the acclaimed book, “Cutting the Cord: How the Cell Phone has Transformed Humanity,” which is one of thing he discusses in this Looking Forward episode.

Marty earned both his bachelors and masters degrees from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he serves as a Trustee.

Making The World Better Place for Nearly a BILLION People

Making The World Better Place for Nearly a BILLION People

Hi everyone. Today we’ll again discuss something that directly affects a significant percentage of the estimated 1.2 BILLION people around the world who have disabilities. If you are not one of these individuals, odds are they are one of your family members or friends.

I’m speaking about those who have “invisible” disabilities. In other words, they don’t use an assistive device, like a cane or wheelchair. This means that most of us have no idea of the challenges these people deal with day after day, not even some of their own family members.

In Part of 1 of this two-part series, we learned about those with invisible disabilities, the challenges they face, the improvements that are being made on their behalf, and about an organization that is working tirelessly to advocate for them.

In Part 2 of this series, we’ll cover how things have evolved over the past couple of decades for those with invisible disabilities, COVID’s impact, what the future might look like, what opportunities this may present, and more.

To help us with all this, we’re again going to speak with an expert on this topic. He’s Wayne Connell.

Wayne Connell is president and CEO of the Invisible Disabilities® Association. Wayne founded IDA in 1996 out of the desire to educate friends and family about his wife, Sherri's debilitating illness. Soon afterwards, people around the globe began sending emails sharing how IDA had changed their relationships with their loved ones. Wayne’s background fueled his passion for helping people living with illness, pain and disability. His mission and efforts helped quickly launch IDA into a world-wide outreach for millions living daily with invisible disabilities. These days, Wayne spends most of his evenings, weekends, vacations and holidays, volunteering for IDA.

During daytime hours, Wayne is focused on managing the Telecom Infrastructure Team for Dish Network and Sling TV. He is also Founder and President of the DISH Disability Advocates Network, a DISH employee resource group. He loves sharing and blogging about the great work of IDA and advocating on behalf of all people living daily with illness, pain and disability. Wayne has been given the opportunity to speak at many organizations and businesses over the years about invisible disabilities as well as share via local and national TV and radio.

Wayne is also co-author of the book, "But You LOOK Good: How to Encourage and Understand People Living with Illness and Pain."

We'll also hear some really funny anecdotes about what crazy things can happen if you work in a pet store. (Hello, pythons and guinea pigs!)

In Part 2 of this two-part series, we discussed several topics, including how the pet industry has changed over the years, how big the industry is and who owns pets, what trends we’re seeing in the industry now in both the U.S. and elsewhere around the world, and what impact COVID-19 has had on all of this. We also got a few tips about pet adoption and begin to look at what the future of the pet industry may look like.

In Part 2, I'm again conversing with an outstanding expert, a man who’s spent 55 years working in the pet industry! He’s Phil Cooper. With experience at all levels of the pet industry, Phil Cooper has done it all. He’s been a retailer and a multi-unit store operator. He had the very first pet superstore in the USA. He’s been part owner of an 80-year-old pet distribution company in Australia, and he was also the highest volume pet product rep in the United States for many years.

Phil has done everything from importing containers to opening United States’ offices for overseas firms. He has traveled the world buying and selling pet products. And he has specialized in building small pet product companies into large firms.

Currently, Phil owns and operates petindustryexpert.com, which offers a variety of business services to pet companies both small and large. Prescription Drug Research Goes Global: It's a Small World After All!

Prescription Drug Research Goes Global: It's a Small World After All!

Hi everyone! Pharmaceutical research has played a huge role in improving the quality and length of human lives for many, many years. It has led to numerous breakthrough medicines… and the discovery of vaccines that can effectively help prevent terrible, often fatal diseases, including COVID-19, the virus responsible for the pandemic that begin early in 2020.
In Part of 1 of this two-part series, we’re going to focus on how pharmaceutical research has changed over the past few decades. This includes gaining a better perspective on some of the many things involved in drug development and bringing a drug to the marketplace. Maybe even more importantly, we’ll learn about some of the many countries and continents whose residents now participate in this research. And, believe me, that number is growing!
To help us with all that, we’ve brought on an expert on this topic. He’s Andrew Hall.
Andrew Hall is the Chief Executive Officer at IMV Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on a promising new avenue of cancer treatment: Immune Oncology.
Prior to joining IMV, Andrew spent more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry leading clinical and commercial strategy in the US, Europe and Asia Pacific. Throughout his career, Andrew has been a part of many successful product launches, and just as many product failures, so he brings insight into the complexity of drug development and what it takes to take what we know as a drug all the way from discovery to the pharmacy shelves. Originally from Melbourne Australia, Andrew has lived in the United States for over 12 years. He now lives in the state of NJ.

Fund Raising- Job and Career Opportunities It Offers, Its Future, and Much More

Fund Raising- Job and Career Opportunities It Offers, Its Future, and Much More

Hi everyone. Today we’re going to continue our conversation about a vital, multi-billion-dollar industry that seeks to help societies and people around the world function better, including in the communities where you live. I’m speaking about fund raising.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we covered such topics as what the different kinds of fund raising are, how fund raising has evolved over the past few decades, differences in how funds are raised around the world, and COVID 19’s impact on the fund-raising industry thus far.

In Part 2 of this series, we’ll speak more about the latest fund-raising approaches, what the near-term future of fund raising may look like, what OPPORTUNITIES the industry has to offer those in the know, and how you can determine if a non-profit cause is worth your donor dollars, volunteer time, or other support.

To help us do that, we’re again going to speak with our great fund-raising expert, Matt Hugg. Matt is an author and instructor in nonprofit management in the US and abroad. He is president and founder of Nonprofit.Courses, an on-demand, eLearning educational resource for nonprofit leaders, staff, board members, and volunteers, with thousands of courses in nearly every aspect of nonprofit work.

Matt has taught nonprofit management at several universities and technology companies, online and in person in the United States, Africa, Asia and Europe. Matt’s past work includes fundraising for the University of the Arts, Ursinus College, University of Cincinnati and the Boy Scouts of America. He has a BS from Juniata College and an MA in Philanthropy and Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.
