A World of Difference

By Lori Adams-Brown

After 20 years of working in Asia, and growing up in South America, I’ve spent my life living in several countries around the world, getting to know people of different cultures, speaking different languages, and learning to appreciate different ways of living this human life. This podcast is a celebration of differences, and a space to discuss how in learning about our differences we discover how we all can benefit from simply listening to and learning from each other. Join us on a deep dive into conversations about how our differences can help us all make a world of difference.

Women in the Church EPS 35: April Díaz on Ezer + Co, the future of the church, and life coaching

April has been a visionary and challenger her entire life. In 2019, she founded Ezer + Co., a company committed to activating women toward wholeness in life and leadership in full partnership with men. April pastored in the local church for nearly 20 years at two of the most influential churches in the country. For the last 5 years she’s coached hundreds of leaders and has spoken nationally. She’s crazy passionate coming alongside leaders who are influencing along the margins of culture.
Her first book, Redefining the Role of the Youth Worker: A Manifesto for Integration is a compelling vision for the church’s role with teenagers. Because April loves teenagers, she loves partnering with Stuff You Can Use and Fuller Youth Institute.
She coaches, speaks, and writes frequently on living and leading with wholeness. She loves talking about leadership, soul care, youth ministry, and caring for your body. She’s always been a tomboy with sparkly shoes and reads more than she can put into practice. She’s still madly in love with her high school sweetheart, Brian. Together, they co-parent 3 fabulous kiddos and live in Orange County, CA.

Women in the Church EPS 30: Dr. Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer on spiritual abuse, silencing women, abuse of power, pastors and how churches can be TOV (good)

This episode is coming to you for such a time as this.  With spiritual abuse, abuse of power, and sexual abuse becoming such common news in our time, we have to admit that there are many churches with cultures and systems that are unhealthy and even harmful.  If you are a pastor, a church leader, a congregant or just want to be a part of making a difference in a way that helps others flourish, listen in closely to the research and the harsh reality of what is happening on our watch. There is hope of how to do better, and how to be a part of creating goodness cultures together.   Our guests today are a father and daughter co-author duo who walked through a painful reality at Willow Creek church in Chicago, and that experience led them to want to help others.

Dr. Scot McKnight is a world-renowned speaker, writer, professor and equipper of the Church. He is a recognized authority on the historical Jesus, early Christianity, and the New Testament. His blog, Jesus Creed, is a leading Christian blog. Dr. McKnight’s books include The Jesus Creed, The King Jesus Gospel, The Blue Parakeet, The Real Mary, and Junia is Not Alone.  A sought after speaker, he has been interviewed on several radio and television programs as well as spoken at numerous local churches, conferences, colleges, and seminaries in the United States and around the world. Scot McKnight is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Society for New Testament Studies. McKnight’s books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Portuguese.

You can find him, along with the other 50.5K followers on twitter at: @scotmcknight

Laura Barringer is a teacher of primary-grade students. She is the co-author of Sharing God's Love: The Jesus Creed for Children and wrote a teacher lesson and activity guide to accompany the book. She is also co-author of A Church Called Tov: Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing. Laura is a graduate of Wheaton College (IL) and currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Mark, and three beagles.

You can find her on twitter at:  @laurambarringer

Buy their book and highlight it as many times as I did, because A Church Called TOV:  Forming a Goodness Culture That Resists Abuses of Power and Promotes Healing, will likely be, outside of the Bible, the most important book you read this year.  Let's be TOV and create TOV systems and TOV churches together so we can all flourish.

Women in the Church EPS 29: Anna Morgan on the Billy Graham rule, sexism in the church, women pastors and developing leaders

Ever wondered what some alternatives to the Billy Graham rule could be so that women can still be developed as leaders as much as men can in the church? Anna Morgan has.  She not only has wondered, she has researched this topic and found some practical ways to address this issue so that women and men can both flourish in leadership spaces. Anna Morgan has been in full-time pastoral ministry for over twenty years. She has a background in worship and creative ministries and has been the executive pastor of the ministries of City Church Chicago, a ten-year-old multi-ethnic church in downtown Chicago, for the past five years. Anna is also a leadership coach and trainer, working to develop local church leaders around the US and Australia. Anna earned a masters degree in Global Leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary and is currently working on a doctorate of missiology at Fuller Seminary, doing applied research into the development of female leaders in local churches. Anna has been married to John Morgan for fourteen years and has three adult daughters. You can find her at City Church Chicago and on Linkedin and Facebook. Women in the Church EPS 25: Sheila Gregoire on sex, relationships, how the church and the culture send women and men unhealthy messages, and how we can find freedom and truth

Women in the Church EPS 25: Sheila Gregoire on sex, relationships, how the church and the culture send women and men unhealthy messages, and how we can find freedom and truth

Sheila Wray Gregoire is a popular speaker, marriage blogger, and the author of nine books, including The Good Girl’s Guide to Great Sex. Her latest book is The Great Sex Rescue that will be coming out in early March. It is based on the largest survey ever done of Christian women. She surveyed 20,000 women for this book, and we get to hear some of the results of that survey on this podcast.

Sheila loves encouraging women in their relationships, both with God and with their husbands, children, and friends. Her passion is for marriage, and she and her husband Keith speak together at marriage outreaches and at FamilyLife Canada marriage conferences. Sheila believes in authenticity, and gives real solutions to the very real and messy problems women, and couples, can face. You can usually find her in Belleville, Ontario, where she’s constantly texting her two young married daughters and knitting. Preferably simultaneously.

She blogs at: tolovehonorandvacuum.com where you can also find her resources that she has written and produced.  You can find the rubric she mentioned here, and a place to pre-order her latest book The Great Sex Rescue: https://tolovehonorandvacuum.com/gsr-rubric/

She has resources to help parents have the sex talk with their kids ages 10-16 in her video curriculum The Whole Story, which has a boy version and a girl version that you can use on a weekend away with your son or daughter.  It is free from purity culture and statements that make girls and boys feel ashamed and trapped in ways some other curriculums have, and it makes it easy to talk about sex with you kid because the videos say the parts that are hard to talk about so you can watch with them.  Has she done us a great favor here or what? She even gives us advice on how to talk with our daughters about her first period in a way that's not creepy.

Have a listen today, and pass this episode on to anyone that may need to hear it.  Sheila is a resource to get us to talk about sex in a healthy way.

Faith & Work EPS 19: Eva Leung on chemical engineering, vaccines, and faith conversations at work

Faith & Work EPS 19: Eva Leung on chemical engineering, vaccines, and faith conversations at work

Eva Leung is a chemical engineer, a TCK, a daughter of first generation immigrants to the US from Hong Kong. She is an expat in Singapore working in quality assurance in a contract manufacturing company and has years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. It was neither growing up in Arizona and Singapore, nor her studies at Princeton where she encountered the life changing conversations that led her to want to follow Jesus. It was a couple of co-workers at Merck that told her about their faith. This life change revolutionized everything for Eva, and began her journey at the intersectionality of faith and work.

She has always wanted to live the exact plot of Bicentennial Man by building a robot that can work with human body parts, and she wanted to go into healthcare earlier in life. Since she hates blood, chemical engineering it was.

She spent some time in Singapore as a kid, attending Singapore American School when her dad worked as a expat in Singapore. Moving to Singapore as a expat herself, as an adult when she transferred to Singapore with Merck Pharmaceuticals gave her a whole different view of the religious diversity within Singapore, which is the most religiously diverse nation in the world.

She recommends Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller.

100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote EPS 5: Bella Adams-Brown on why it matters to all ages

Bella Adams-Brown shares her thoughts and reactions to the 100 year history of women’s right to vote in the US. She gives a Generation Z, 12-year-old perspective on the complicated struggle for votes for women leading up to Aug 18, 1920. Freida Adams shares a Baby Boomer perspective on what it meant to her to see her mom and other women and men in her family vote when she was a child. We discuss the generations and how setting an example leaves a legacy of how important it is that all voices be heard. We discuss the racism that darkened the purity of the movement, and how black women would have to wait many more years to be given access to the polls. We also talk about how voter surpression still exists today, and how we should welcome all voices to speak into our society’s choices for leadership. We commemorate the 19th Ammendment’s 100 year history, and let it spur us on to include more votes into government because some things are just too big to do alone. Stay In Touch:
