Danielle has never seen LOST, and Syl wants to rewatch it. Knowing the show has a lot of mystery box plots, Danielle decided to watch it at random, with Syl as spreadsheet and character name guide. Come join us as we stumble through the secrets of the... wherever this is!
We're back after a short hiatus! Having a full time job can be draining, just like Locke's office job- better check our bags for knives. We're back to one of the earliest episodes as we discover the origins of the show's mysteries that EVERYONE knows. Everyone but Danielle, as she tries to figure out who the older, nicely dressed man is creeping on Jack? How is it that so many characters stare right up at a giant monster (possibly digger?) and still not describe what it looks like? Does Shannon have any redeeming qualities?
Episode beverage: Gosefish by Ghostfish Brewing Company
Desmond sees Charlie's death, which obviously means he needs to do something like... a CAMPING TRIP! We hear all about Desmond's time making wine in one of the more convoluted backstory revelations of the show. How many different classes is Desmond gonna take? Jin tells the best Korean horror story of all time and everyone else is making awkward flirty banter. Those clever LOST writers sneak in a reference to the episode title, but we all know how it's gonna end already. Why is there a giant cable on the beach?
Episode Beverage: Plum Deluxe Rise and Shine tea.
Everything flashes white. You're now in the 1970s; you only have the items that were on you when you disappeared. Was that a gunshot in the distance? ROLL FOR DHARMA INITIATIVE! LOST at Random makes a big genre shift as we give up on trying to figure out what is going on, and realize that everything can be solved with a good ol' charisma roll. Sawyer, Juliet, and Miles adapt to their new classes in the Dharma Initiative, but what skills will be necessary to take on the new challenges they might face? Just what level IS Richard Alpert anyway? The party is broken up, but how long until they rejoin? Wait, what? It's gonna take 3 years? Roll a survival check! Episode beverages: Acoustic Ales Unplugged 2016, Culmination Brewing Illusions of Grandeur, Matchless Bananas on Fire
We revisit Hydra Island where Kate and Sawyer are still locked in cages. In the flashback, Kate is getting married to a surprise Nathan Fillion! See, marriage and cages are a metaphor. Look how clever those LOST writers are. Jack is once again asked to perform surgery under duress. In case you forgot he was a doc-What's that? A wild Pokemon appears? How does that tie into LOST? Danielle might be getting closer to the actual identity of the smoke monster with a little help from Harry Potter. All this and more on the latest episode of Lost At Random. Episode beverage: Plum Deluxe Snow Day Tea.
We've already met Dan, Charlotte, Miles and Frank on previous episodes, but here we see a little of their backstory! Why is there a polar bear in Tunisia (and how?) When did Locke see a tall Walt? What is the meaning of life? How much bullshit is Jack gonna say? In other words, the typical stuff. Danielle unravels more mysteries on this episode of Lost at Random (or maybe, just unravels).
Episode Beverage: Pfriem Beersell Brett Pale Ale and Dirt Road Juicy IPA
Locke's overly trusting self gets him into a bad spot both in the past and the present. We all know the important thing here is that we spend a lot of time analyzing the secret map on the hatch lockdown door. Jack and Sawyer have a dick measuring contest played out via a poker game. Some pretty good theorycrafting about the difference between the Others and the Dharma initiative and we have a great episode for everyone! Episode Beverage: Gen-Matcha Tea.
We jump forward, backwards, maybe even sideways in time to Season 5 where there's a whole lot of discussion about the finer details of time travel. Is there a paradox? Is everyone dead in the future? Is everyone dead in the past? How many surgeries will Benjamin Linus have to go through? What the hell is the wheel? Why is Jack still such a jerk? Should Syl watch the Anne Hathaway cinematic universe?
Find out this and more, on this exciting episode of Lost at Random!
Episode Beverage: Plum Deluxe Roasted Chestnut Chai Tea and Melvin Citradamus IIPA
Locke has a guest appear on the Island. A girl falls from a helicopter. Sawyer explains how he got his name. Is Sawyer Locke's Dad!? Danielle gets lost in a complicated web of the afterlife, magic and science. We also spoil the absolute hell out of both Season 1 of The Good Place and Stranger Things. Seriously, don't listen if you haven't seen either of those shows first seasons yet. (You should!)
Episode beers: Matchless Spudman IPA and Chapman Fun Fact! IPA
In what felt like a really long episode (partly because we watched both in the same sitting), we find out what it takes to blow up a bunker station, dabble in Egyptian hieroglyphs, ponder how deep Locke's crisis of faith goes, and guess whether or not the Others could put on a production of Fiddler on the Roof with their current costumes (or at least, Danielle guesses). Also, Michael obtains a boat.
Episode beverage: still the unlabeled barrel aged stout in a crowler from the previous episode because we watched both in the same sitting.
I naively thought we could do a two parter in one episode, but nope, two parter podcast episodes it is. In the season 2 finale, someone just had a funeral, Desmond shows back up and we discover why he's so into sailing. Locke has a crisis of faith. Also: doors?
Episode beverage: Caffeinated mint gum because Danielle was sleepy, and a mystery barrel-aged stout from a crowler, "BAM" from Les Caves.
In our first Michael and Walt episode, we try to figure out just what the hell was going on with Walt's convoluted multi-national upbringing. Also someone is chased by a real live polar bear! Or is it all in Walt's Mind? Did Walt create the monster all along!?
Episode Beverage: Port Barrel Aged Scotch Silly 2013 by Brasserie De Silly
Oh hey, it's the pilot. And, there's also a pilot! (Briefly). It's the first episode of LOST ever, so time is spent sketching our heroes' personalities, and I [Danielle] am dumbfounded that the Locke-orange-smile gif is somehow, not an edit.
also this isn't just a castaway narrative- there is something BIG and SPOOKY and ODDLY MECHANICAL SOUNDING stalking the island! What do context clues tell us?? Also, is there evidence for Jack being drugged???
Episode beverage: Vanilla Toddy by Plum Deluxe (December's tea club selection)
In the season 4 opener, the weird timeline from our episode 11 (S4E10 "Something Nice Back Home") makes a tiny bit more sense, sort of, as we see why Hurly is institutionalized in the flash...somethings. I speculate as to whether or not the island is sentient and is creating hallucinations to draw the "Oceanic Six" back in. Also in the island plot people try to leave but apparently a character is dead and I am distraught and ugh
None of y'all are being rescued today calm down
Anyway this was a very dense episode and it took a while to parse.
Episode beverages: Firestone Walker Agrestic, 2015, Brasserie Trois Dames' Handle in Hand (barrel aged sour red with sage), and Evil Twin Brewing's Imperial Biscotti Chili Hazelnut Break
it was a long, dense episode okay
It's our first Hugo/Hurly backstory episode! Hoarding resources makes the gatekeeper seem like a bad person, and Hurly wants to avoid that based on past experiences. Rose is the best (and not your mammy), and
what if the numbers are because the island is sentient this is really dumb aaaaaaaah
Episode beverage: Block 15's The Prophecies (2015 vintage)
It's another Juliet episode, and at this point Syl thinks we've seen most of the Juliet episode (thanks, RNG). Turns out the Other camp also has love triangles, according to the flashbacks. On contemporary island time, Daniel and Charlotte have disappeared from the beach and beach crew thinks they are Up to Something. For some reason, Locke and others have occupied Other Village and Ben/Henry reveals they have a common enemy: Charles Widmore aka the Man Who Owns the Boat.
Episode beverage: Orange Blossom Black Tea by Plum Deluxe
After a week off for Thanksgiving, we're back in your feeds with what was honestly a jumbled episode, thus the longer run time. The A plot is jungle hiking team coming across Mikhail's station, and deciding what to do with him/which faction he's with/what codes on the computer mean. The flashbacks belong to Sayid, digging further into his past and taking a prescient move for 2007 in acknowledging wrongdoing while apologizing- a lesson current #MeToo perpetrators could follow. The B plot, which apparently is the only thing Syl remembers, is Sawyer making a bet on ping pong. I can no longer use my name in descriptions as it's revealed that Rousseau is also named Danielle!
Episode beverage: Sierra Nevada's Trip In The Woods: Ginger Bigfoot
It's Danielle's first season 4 episode and uh, things are confusing. On the island, Jack apparently has appendicitis so newcomers Dan and Charlotte (who Danielle's only seen previously in the S5 episode "Jughead") try to gain beach crew's trust by traveling with Jin and Sun for supplies. While traveling with Claire, Aaron, and Sawyer, Miles gets weird visions of dead people.
Meanwhile, we seemingly have flashforwards again... or is it an alternative timeline? Hurly declares something that puts Danielle in a tailspin which is why this episode is our longest yet. :S
Episode beverages: Russian River's Supplication 2016 and Temptation 2014
After a stand off, the issue of the episode becomes clear: a code needs to be entered and a button pushed to stop a ticking clock. What happens when the timer hits zero? Jack is skeptical, and I (Danielle) don't know which side Desmond is on either. Another Expanse actor makes a brief appearance. Meanwhile, the flashbacks dig into Locke's daddy issues, and elsewhere on the island Sawyer gets played in a pit.
Also, I guess there's some numbers I need to keep track of now.
Episode beverage: a ginger citrus green tea (likely from Oregon Tea & Coffee)
It's the season 3 opener, and that would've been super disorienting if we hadn't already seen this from Juliet's PoV in *our* opener! Jack, Sawyer, and Kate are separated and imprisoned, while the flashbacks show Jack is the worst ex and needs to learn to chill.
Episode beverage: Townshend's Tea Company Sinus Soother
It's the second week of the show after the two-part pilot, so everyone's learning each other's names... except for the screaming, dying man on the beach, and he mostly wants to choke Kate. There's apparently a weird radio signal, but this is mostly put aside so we can focus on Kate's past, kind of. Locke carves a literal dogwhistle.
Episode beverage: Great Divide Strawberry Rhubarb
It's a midseason finale I guess because we start off with CHAOS of missing people, cut in with Jack's flashbacks of juggling familial duty with lawful good decision making. Locke finds his hatch. The episode title is great, but where's the cowboy bit?
Episode beverage: Wildcraft's Wild Rose Cider
It's Danielle's first season 2 episode, where we meet Rose and Bernard, and where Bernard won't stop trying to *do something*. Letty from Fast and Furious makes an appearance keeping an eye on Ben/Henry, and Jack is really just a 15 year old boy who needs to learn how to process his feelings.
Episode beverage: Stone Farking w00t Stout 2018
Desmond is on a boat and tries to find people. Danielle meets another plane Asian (Miles) as the island time somehow becomes... island time travel. Locke seems to think conversation threads transcend decades. Perplexing.
We end up in season 3 again for 304 "Every Man For Himself", in which the mystery boxes for some of what 316 revealed are introduced (who do the x-rays with the tumor belong to? why does Jack trust Juliet?). Danielle is introduced to Contemplative Beard Man who seems unusually interested in Claire. Ben threatens a bunny. Danielle fails to capture Sawyer's accent.
Episode beverage: De Garde Brewing's The Little Peach 2018
RNG throws us for a loop by queuing up 614 "The Candidate". Danielle meets Locke, mourns the loss of several characters, and struggles to figure out when not!island scenes take place. Syl is amused.
Episode beverage: Oskar Blues Barrel Aged Ten Fidy 2016
We begin our journey of watching LOST randomly by starting with 316: "One of Us". Danielle thinks this episode feels fairly pilot-like. We're still new at recording, so please excuse the shared mike!
Episode beverage: D9 Systema Naturae Elderflower & Cherimoya (4th ed)
