Potlucks, Family Squabbles and Chosen Love: Embracing Chosen Family During The Holidays

Potlucks, Family Squabbles and Chosen Love: Embracing Chosen Family During The Holidays

Join Moe Ari and Tiffany as we unpack the complex dynamics of family during the holiday season. Listen in as we explore the concept of chosen family, particularly for those who might feel disconnected from their biological families during this time of celebration. We address the pain points, disappointments, and challenges that can arise from families of origin, prompting a redefinition of what 'family' means. With special emphasis on LGBTQIA+ individuals, we shed light on the need to dismantle harmful societal messages about family, while highlighting the beauty and expansiveness of cultivating a chosen family that celebrates and accepts you for who you are.

In this engaging episode, we also explore how to navigate tricky family dynamics during the holidays. From estrangement and loss to issues surrounding acceptance of one's sexual orientation or gender identity, we touch on a myriad of scenarios that can lead to feelings of disconnect. Setting boundaries, making intentional choices about who to share space with, and learning to embrace differences within families are among the topics we delve into. We believe in the power of acceptance and understanding, and we aim to arm our listeners with tools to foster these within their own families, biological or chosen.

Lastly, we shift gears to a lighter topic - potlucks! Listen to us as we share our personal experiences and preferences with potlucks, including our love for store-bought items and aversion to casseroles. We also discuss alternative ways to celebrate with chosen families beyond traditional gatherings. Sprinkled with humor and heart, this episode is an invitation to redefine family, embrace diversity, and navigate the holiday season with love, understanding, and intentionality. Join us and let's journey together towards becoming our own #lovegoals.

Single and Sleighing: Enjoying The Holidays When You're Single

Single and Sleighing: Enjoying The Holidays When You're Single

On this special holiday episode of the Be Your Own Love Goals podcast, we're taking on an often overlooked topic - being single during the holidays. Joined by our fabulous co-hosts, Moe Ari and Tiffany, we unpack the realities, challenges, and unique joys that can come with being unattached during this season. Listen in as we explore how holiday romantic comedies can evoke feelings of grief and loneliness for single folks, share our personal favorite holiday movies (and why we love them even when they're sad), and discuss the pressures that often come with traditional holiday activities and expectations.

We also get honest about the not-so-festive side of the season, like invasive questions from relatives about relationships and fertility, the impact of social media posts flaunting seemingly perfect couples and families, and the need for representation of black joy in holiday movies. But it's not all doom and gloom! We share practical tips on approaching conversations with single loved ones, advocating for oneself, and creating a sense of joy and celebration that doesn't hinge on having a partner.

Finally, we tackle a listener's dilemma about inviting an ex to spend the holidays with their family, reminding everyone of the importance of setting boundaries and open communication. We even touch on expanding the definition of family to include close friends and ex-partners who have become like family.

The episode wraps up with a preview of an upcoming conversation on grief during the holidays, a festive game of "truth or truth," and our usual reminder that, single or not, you are loved and your own #lovegoals. So, whether you're single, taken, or somewhere in between, tune in for a holiday episode that promises to be as warm, comforting, and insightful as a mug of hot cocoa by the fire.

#LOVERESOURCE From This Episode: Self-Awareness Exercise

This exercise involves writing down components of your last argument with your partner or another moment you felt triggered. Use the following questions to help you identify what was going on. After the exercise is over, notice if any patterns emerge for you around triggers.

  • Do any behaviors, thoughts, feelings, or sensations occur regularly? If so, notice if those are also moments when you feel triggered.
  • Do you remember how you were breathing?
  • Do you remember any sensations in your body? If so, what parts of your body felt the sensation?

#LOVERESOURCE from this episode

Exercise: MAKE A LIST

This is our take on making a list of qualities in a partner. Rather than just focusing on them, focus on your goals and vision for your future as well.

Make 4 columns on a  page

1st column, your long terms goals and how you want your life to be set up. Include how you want it to feel and not just how you want it to look.

2nd column, put checks on each row where your long term goal matches something you know they want. Put an X if they don’t want that same goal. If you’re unsure, don’t put a check. Put a question mark. You have to get an answer from them on whether they want that before you can answer that question

3rd column, put a list of qualities you want in a long term partner. No physical qualities. Just internal qualities

4th, put checks on each row where their qualities match your ideal qualities in a partner. Put an X if they don’t have that quality. If you’re unsure, don’t put a check. Put a question mark.

Daring To Be Vulnerable: A New Perspective On Relationships

Daring To Be Vulnerable: A New Perspective On Relationships

Ready to challenge your perceptions of vulnerability? Prepare yourself for a deep dive into its multifaceted nature in relationships as we share personal anecdotes and discuss the influence of societal norms and individual experiences. This episode is imbued with wisdom from Brene Brown, who redefined vulnerability as a feeling during times of uncertainty, risk, or emotional exposure and we'll explore how that has reframed our understanding of the concept.

We're going to break down biases against emotional expression and equip you with practical tools to foster vulnerability and self-compassion in your relationships. One of these tools is the "Touch and Agree" exercise, a simple yet powerful way to connect with your partner. Furthermore, we underscore the importance of courage in daring to be vulnerable, drawing on Brown's belief that courage is about speaking one's mind by telling the entirety of one's heart. This episode will embolden you to express yourself authentically and fearlessly, and to embrace vulnerability as strength rather than weakness. So, are you ready to change your perspective?

#LoveResource from this episode: TOUCH AND AGREE

The "Touch and Agree" exercise is a therapy tool introduced in this podcast episode to encourage vulnerability and connection in relationships. It involves two partners sitting with one another, maintaining eye contact, and holding hands while they express their feelings about each other. The exercise emphasizes the importance of active listening and authentic response. During the exercise, the individuals are encouraged to remain present, maintaining eye contact and physical touch, even if it becomes uncomfortable. The exercise promotes the process of 'leaning in', engaging deeply and being present with each other. The goal is to stay authentic, allow vulnerability, and discuss discomfort after the exercise. The podcast hosts also shared their experience leading this exercise in a couples retreat and its powerful impact on participants.
