Today we're going to discover what drives you, subconsciously. But I want to get you started and get your wheels spinning in order to give you some time to digest this before we talk about the next piece of this next week.

So when I say… what drives you. What is it that I am talking about? It is simple really.

You are driven by your values. And our values are held subconsciously. We do not naturally think… does this decision I am making align with my values?

When you understand this you will be able to make choices from a place a power and really understand why you maybe have not already healed your relationship with food & body.

Diet culture has taught us we are supposed to be committed to xyz diet or weight loss 100% or else we get nothing and so in-lies the beginning of the shame cycle. Sound familiar? While this has played physiological warfare with our brains, it can actually teach us something. Everything is a lesson after-all, correct?

We know that dieting, restricting, and doing whatever else it takes to achieve the so called perfect body is NOT something we can commit to on a long term basis because our lived experience shows us that. But what can we learn from that process?  Could it be that it has taught us about how commitment is important to achieve what it is we want? Is it possible we are just striving for something that we think we need, but in reality we need to reach for so much more? So I ask… what does it look like to be committed to your well-being, your highest level of greatness, and dare I say an empowered intuitive eater? And even more importantly what would it feel like to be committed to all this?

UK Registered Dietitian joins to discuss what is weight stigma, how it shows up in healthcare, and how it can be harmful and not just emotionally harmful. She also shares her story about being on the fence of either promoting weight loss or promoting health improvement and how she wanted to be in the middle, but after seeing the harm that can be done and through research, the answer is quite clear that a provider cannot be in the middle and she has found it most impactful to focus on health improvements to improve health (how novel right?). 


We also dig into how promotion of weight loss is promoting weight stigma which goes hand in hand with restriction, which can lead to feelings of deprivation, preoccupation with food, and binging (just to mention a few). This conversation is so timely with the Easter Holiday weekend and gobs of marketing out there trying to tell us all to not have chocolate, even world leaders.

Family Practice Dietitian Morgan Skatz joins us to discuss how we can model a peaceful relationship with food for the kids in our lives and what the division of responsibility is with feeding children, which supports children to grow up to be an intuitive eater. She also shares her personal story about how her parents did not have all of these tools which may have contributed to her own eating disorder and how every time someone complimented her on her weight loss, it only furthered her eating disorder.

Now in recovery, Morgan’s goal as a dietitian is to end disordered eating to hopefully prevent the start of an eating disorder and see everyone enjoy food again. She specializes in working with families with children of all ages. She empowers parents to raise their children as intuitive eaters and to respect their bodies. She enjoys helping families work through concerns associated with limited food acceptance, baby-led weaning, family meal times, and more! She loves to see disordered eating/eating disorders prevented by putting in positive work as early on as possible. She also works with young adults and adults on Intuitive Eating and hypothalamic amenorrhea recovery. She wants everyone to know how good they have the potential to feel.

3. The story of Rosa and our Identities

Tammy tells a story about a little girl on the beach who she named Rosa. Her future identity (and ours) is simply a reflection or a mirror of how we grew up and how we thought about ourselves as a child. This identity is created through our experiences and how we interpret those experiences. And from this we create beliefs. Tammy's hope for this girl is that this beach experience with her mom adoring her and modeling being secure in her body is a positive imprint on her for life.  Tammy then digs into what is identity, how that relates to our self-image, and what the Logical Level Model is. Utilizing this type of brain science helps us because everything we do in our current day today is from learned behavior and habit, so without understanding our behaviors and habits, we will never be able to fully make the transformations we are desiring. Everything that happens in your life happens from the inside out and Tammy will share some top thinking tips on how to get out of your comfort box and to not get trapped in a negative thought loop.

“Weight”.....what were we talking about again?  Today Tammy and Shelly attempt to delve into the roots of diet culture and the reasons why we are often so unhappy with our bodies.  They share stories about their own experiences, examine the origins of diet mentality and discuss the damage that it does to our psyches and at times our bodies.  They also find out how talking about such a complex and emotional topic can make it hard to stay on track.  Another example of how societal ideals seep into so many aspects of our lives.  This is definitely a subject that will likely be revisited many times.
