Title: The Most Important Episode of ‘Lunch with Doug’: The Charm and Importance of Small-Town Businesses (S8:E45)

Description:

Welcome to what is set to be the most important episode of ‘Lunch with Doug’ to date. In this special episode, we delve into the charm and importance of small-town businesses. These aren’t your typical corporate entities, but rather, sole proprietorships, partnerships, family-owned businesses, pop-up shops, food trucks, and budding music venues. They may not have the grandeur of large corporations, but they possess a unique appeal that is deeply intertwined with the community’s fabric.

We’ll explore how these businesses, with their unpredictable hours and personal touch, form an integral part of their communities. We’ll also discuss the role of the community in supporting these businesses, whether it’s a pop-up shop, a part-time food truck, or a budding music venue still raising funds.

While corporate businesses play a significant role in the economy, they cannot solely sustain a community. Small businesses, often overlooked, are the lifeblood of a community. They contribute to the local economy, create jobs, and foster a sense of community that large corporations often cannot replicate.

We’ll also delve into why a community cannot thrive on corporate businesses alone. While they play a significant role, it’s the small businesses that contribute to the local economy, create jobs, and foster a sense of community that large corporations often cannot replicate.

So, join us as we explore these businesses - you might just find a hidden gem. Remember, a balanced mix of small and corporate businesses is what truly makes a community thrive.

As we delve into this crucial topic, we also take a moment to celebrate our 7th anniversary. Over the years, we’ve shared countless stories, insights, and conversations, all while enjoying our lunch. This episode is a testament to our mission of sharing stories that matter over a good lunch. Here’s to many more years of ‘Lunch with Doug’!

This episode (S8:E7) we talk about the Weltmer Institute. It was an American business with trained staff that practiced weltmerism, a kind of electromagnetic healing using laying-on-of-hands combined with the power of suggestion and hypnosis. It was devoted to "mind cures" of illnesses and ailments not susceptible to other treatment. Also known as the Weltmer Institute of Suggestive Therapeutics, it was founded in Nevada, Missouri by Sidney Abram Weltmer on February 19, 1897. He had developed his ideas as a young man while purportedly curing himself of tuberculosis, then a disease without a cure. The institute operated until 1933, being dissolved by Weltmer's son shortly after the senior man's death in 1930.
