2/19/23, Lessons From Philemon, Philemon 1:1-10, Aaron Oosterwyk

Philemon 1:1-10 is the opening of the letter written by the Apostle Paul to Philemon, a Christian slave owner who lived in Colossae. In this passage, Paul greets Philemon and thanks God for him, acknowledging his faith and love for other believers. Paul then appeals to Philemon to receive back his runaway slave, Onesimus, who had become a believer while with Paul. Rather than commanding Philemon to do so, Paul makes a heartfelt request based on their mutual love for Christ and their shared identity as brothers in Him. Paul also offers to personally pay any debts that Onesimus owes to Philemon. The passage highlights the themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and Christian love in the context of a complex and potentially difficult situation.
