Are Pulps the Next "Big Collectible"?

Magic City traded in their sandals, sun, and comics for the Windy City, freezing rain, and PULPS?!?!? Jimmy and Paul took a trip up to Chicago to attend Windy City Pulp and Paper Con, one of the biggest pulps shows in the US. Diving head first into this new world of collectibles was a truly humbling and educational experience. Learning about Detective, Good Girl, Clowns, and famous artists of the time while talking to all the different dealers and vendors provided us with first hand knowledge of how under-appreciated and untapped this poised to explode collectible segment truly is. Picked up a couple of key books and made some friends along the way. Listen in as we discuss our experience and where we think the market is going. CinemaCon 2023 The Announcements We Liked!

CinemaCon 2023 happened last week and some big movies were announced! All the major studios participated in CinemaCon in a way to get people excited to watch movies in movie theaters. David Zazlav, Co-CEO of Warner Bros, made it clear they are committed to the movie theater going experience and will not be releasing movies straight to streaming. Another Fantastic Unboxing

On the next BTAS Rewatch, Scarecrow has entered into the mix. We are introduced to the disgraced Jonathan Crane looking to get revenge on his old job, while also giving us the most iconic line in the entire series. The episode also takes a deep dive into what drives Bruce to be Batman and to live up to the Wayne legacy that he was born into. Disney 100th Anniversary Original Comic Art Covers!

Did you know Disney is celebrating its 100 year anniversary? There have been hundreds of listings of new merchandise honoring this incredible milestone and Marvel Comics decided to pay homage with our favorite Disney characters recreating classic covers. Disney will be offering 12 variant covers to Amazing Spiderman this year with currently only six unveiled. Three in particular caught our attention, the Avengers 4, Fantastic Four 1, and Infinity Gauntlet homage covers and we got them. Not the books, the actual original cover art from the artist. let us know what you think about the covers and which one you would have picked up.

Batman: The Animated Series | Joker's Favor

On this rewatch of BTAS, we get our 1st appearance of the Joker. There is no origin story for this introduction, and that’s just fine. Though not a strong introduction episode, what it does give us is the insanity that is the Joker, and as a bonus, we’re also introduced to Harley. Some average no-name dude gets a case of road rage on the highway, only to realize he’s raging against the Joker. When Joker catches up to the guy, instead of a horrible death, Joker leaves the guy alive in exchange for a favor to be determined at a later date. We then flash forward 2 years later. Our unlucky dude has moved away from Gotham and changed his name, but the Joker still finds him and calls in the favor. This episode is Joker heavy with a side of Batman. Side note, this is one of the few episodes where you actually see Batman laugh. So, did you favor this episode, did you remember it? Let us know in the comments below.

In this latest rewatch of BTAS, we get our first episode without a villain from Batman’s Rogues Gallery. This episode focuses on Gotham’s underworld and focuses on 2 feuding mob bosses. Jimmy likes to call this one the afterschool special since it deals with the issues of drug addiction, but it’s a strong episode that deals with mature subject matters on a kids’ show without being cheesy. Batman: The Animated Series Rewatch | Feat of Clay Pt.1 & 2

In this latest rewatch of BTAS, we’re introduced to Clay Face. With this episode, BTAS continues the trend of turning an obscure, one dimensional Batman villain into a more complex villain with a tragic backstory. Matt Hagen is a popular actor that becomes addicted to a face cream that allows him to mold his face anyway he chooses after being disfigured in a car accident years ago. Problem is, the miracle face cream is produced by Roland Daggett, a shady business man with links to Gotham’s underworld. When Daggett goes to tie up loose ends, he sends his goons to take care of Hagen by pouring a whole vat of the chemical formula over Hagen’s face and mouth. Spoiler alert, instead of killing Hagen, the overdose on the chemical turns him into the monstrous Clay Face! This episode has some of the best animation sequences for BTAS so far and once again shows us that Batman doesn’t just wreck the villains, but tries to save some of them. Batman: The Animated Series | 30 Years Later | Let's take a Deep Dive

Batman: The Animated Series premiered on September 5, 1992 and hit the ground running. The four-time Emmy Award-winning show, inspired by the 2 Tim Burton films, had an immediate impact on pop culture and on the comics, and gave us what most would call the definitive voices for both Batman and the Joker: Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, respectively. With the show celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022, we hear at the Magic City Podcast have decided to do a deep dive on the entire series and spin off films with reviews and insights for each episode. Unboxing some FOMO!

We've been saving a bunch of mail-calls for this unboxing video!

Paul picked up a House of Secrets issue 1 CGC 3.5. This is the book which started the HOS run which later in issue 92, Swamp Thing makes his first appearance. The FOMO book was Thor issue 6 Second Print in a CGC 9.8. This cover shows Thanos wearing the 7th Infinity Stone which apparently is a big part of the comics story moving forward. Again, pure spec and FOMO.

Jimmy went with Gargoyles 1. This is the second series produced for the Gargoyles storyline after the show was cancelled in the 90s. The series did not last long and the trade paperbacks are actually extremely rare and high priced because of the small production run. With the latest Gargoyles Dynamite series, had to add this to the collection.

My Greatest Adventure #80 This is a book Jimmy has been looking for a while after watching the Doom Patrol on HBO MAX. This is the first appearance of the original Doom Patrol, with Dr. Niles Caulder, Negative Man, Elasti-girl, and Silver Age Robotman. Found a great deal after the hype died down a little as we try to not play into the FOMO aspect of the hobby. If you haven't checked out the show, do yourself a favor and please do because Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane and Brendan Frasier as Robot Man are incredible in the show.

Episode 95 Wednesday Review Woefully Excellent?

She's creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and inspired the latest tiktok dance craze, she's Wednesday Addams. Listen in as we discuss Netflix's latest original series, Wednesday, and spoiler alert, it's fantastic. It felt nostalgic and new at the same time with Jenna Ortega providing her own spin to the role and Christina Rucci passing the torch to the new generation. With appearances from the rest of the Addams family, we saw the new interpretations of Gomez, Morticia, Pugley, and the MVP of the series, Thing! Even though Season 2 has yet to be confirmed, we feel this is a no brainer for Netflix and continue to build upon all the new elements introduced from Season 1.
