This Episode is all about the preparation for the trek in Nepal. In this first part, We are going to discuss Kathmandu, food, accommodation, social media groups, books, maps, atm’s, sim cards, as well as a host of other information worth knowing. So grab a pen, but if you don’t have one all the information will be in links below.
So you wake up in Kathmandu and you realize you are not in Kansas anymore. I have always researched my destinations so I have at least some idea of what it will be like.
Classic guide books like Lonely planet, the rough guides, fromer’s, fodors, are still available. LP is still a good one for an overview but with any guides as soon as they are printed they are out of date and if accommodation or restaurants are recommended then the prices go up.

BooksNow a tip on books. If you want to get a few books to read before you go to Nepal, go to Abebooks.com They are the greatest and cheapest online repository of used books on the planet. You will probably find all of the books I recommend available through them for just a few dollars.
House of Snow: An Anthology of the Greatest Writing About Nepal (2016)
If you can only manage to read one book about Nepal before visiting, it should be this one. It is a tome, at 570 pages long, so the electronic version might be friendlier on the backpack. This impressive anthology contains writing from the likes of Sir Edmund Hillary, Dervla Murphy, Lakshmiprasad Devkota, Michael Palin, Jeff Greenwald, Muna Gurung, Prawin Adhikari, Niranjan Kunwar and many others, including almost all other authors on this list. It also contains translations of a lot of Nepali authors who are otherwise difficult or impossible to locate in English.
