51. Healing from an eating disorder with Dr. Jayne Dubois

51. Healing from an eating disorder with Dr. Jayne Dubois

In today’s diet culture we see too many people having some type of eating disorder. With almost 4/100 females and 1/100 males diagnosed with an eating disorder and so many undiagnosed it is all around us. And eating disorders aren’t just a condition where someone either eats too much or doesn’t eat at all there’s a lot in between that and yo-yo dieting can often be right in the middle of that.

There are many long-term complications of eating disorders and a lot of my patients with gut health issues once suffered from an eating disorder, were in modeling, or bodybuilding where a lot of dieting was commonplace. This episode is meant to empower you to get the support you need to prevent these complications and inspire you to work on your mindset and support your mental health in 2021.

IN THIS EPISODE:

I interview my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Jayne Dubois.

Dr. DuBois stumbled into a career in medicine by way of bodywork.  She graduated from the Brian Utting School of Massage in 2006, and went on to become certified in craniosacral therapy in 2008. One of her most influential mentors during her training was a naturopathic physician.

Dr. DuBois' clinical practice has been informed by undergraduate work in cultural anthropology, where she explored the interplay between power dynamics and sociohistorical forces on the stage of medicine. In practice, this affords her the perspective to consider both the intricacies of her patients’ cases and the systems they are situated within.  She graduated from Bastyr University in 2018, with advanced training in constitutional homeopathy and IV therapy.

She spent her residency in a partial hospital psychiatric treatment center, where her areas of focus were substance abuse and eating disorders that co-occur within a variety of psychiatric conditions.  This was followed by a fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Anderson in the treatment of complex chronic illness.  Dr. DuBois is currently accepting new patients at Full Circle Natural Medicine in Seattle.  Her focus includes a naturopathic approach to primary care, complex chronic disease, and mental health with special emphasis on substance abuse and eating disorders.  She also specializes in clinical hypnotherapy.

I interview my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Donna Mazzola.

Dr. Mazzola obtained her Doctorate in Pharmacy degree from Ferris State University, and continued her training by completing a residency program at the Detroit Medical Center. She spent about 10 years in clinical practice doing medication therapy management.  In speaking to patients with a chronic illness she was blown away by how little they knew about managing their disease through lifestyle.  This led her to pursue a master's in nutrition, which she started and then stopped, switching gears to get my MBA to align with my future goals!

But then, in 2015, it all came back around full circle when she herself was diagnosed with Hashimotos. Her diagnosis took her right back to her passion to understand how she was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. She realized she didn't know who to trust and what was the right way to manage the disease, and so, she herself decided to become THE source! She embarked on a journey to further her education and obtain a Master's in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from The University of Western States.

24. Creating a post-partum plan with Dr. Morgan MacDermott

We talk about preconception care a lot but what about after pregnancy? Many women experience a number of different post-partum conditions so should we be planning for that as well?

IN THIS EPISODE: I interview my friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Morgan MacDermott.

Dr. Morgan MacDermott is a rising leader in women’s reproductive health dedicated to transforming the struggles of the modern mother. As a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and mother of two young children, she blends medical expertise and gathered communal wisdom to help women in-person and online to navigate wellness throughout this revered metamorphosis. Although she felt very prepared for motherhood the first go-around, she felt gut punched by the universe with her postpartum issues of recurrent mastitis and postpartum anxiety. These experiences helped her immensely - not only in how she would go on to create an entirely different postpartum for her second child, but also with the women she works with as patients in her private practice.   Morgan believes that the best way to advance the health of future generations is by revolutionizing the health and well-being of our current mothers, and she is a powerful voice for natural medicine in the fields of preconception, fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum.
