By Make Out Already

Better Than An All-Inclusive: "Girls Weekend" by CM Nascosta with Molly
Hi friends! You’re listening to Make Out Already, and today Molly guest hosts to help me recap “Girls Weekend” by CM Nascosta. I did not know going in that this would be Molly’s first proper romance novel, and I’m so grateful that she was willing to talk about horny orcs and part-fae fuckboys with me. We also talk about Eurocentric beauty standards, generational wealth, and whether Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are actually together. It’s all wilder than a trio of elf ladies looking for a good time. Spoilers ahead! You can visit us at www.makeoutalreadypod.com. Cocktails, But Hold the Tails: "Begin Again, Again" by Eve Dangerfield
Hi friends! On this episode, we discuss “Begin Again, Again” by Eve Dangerfield. This is the first book we’ve recapped that explicitly exists in a post (or let’s be honest, during) COVID world. The pandemic looms pretty large over this story of a recently sober former podcaster who falls for a onetime professional athlete. And yet, this is one of the sexiest books we’ve read this year, while being relatable and beautifully optimistic. Spoilers ahead. You can visit us at www.makeoutalreadypod.com. Into the Kateeverse: Wicked Villains, Dark Olympus, and Ironically Timed Speculations
Hi friends! On this episode, we chat about Katee Robert’s “Wicked Villains” and “Dark Olympus” series and speculate about how the two connect. We mention how much we would love Katee Robert to write a short revealing some of these answers, and well — Katee Robert wrote a short revealing some of these answers! So please enjoy our oddly timed speculations, then head over to Katee Robert’s website, sign up for her newsletter, and read the mini arc to see what we got right and wrong. We have a few announcements. First, our next book will be “Begin Again Again” by Eve Dangerfield, so go pick that up so you’re ready for our spoiler recap. If you’re a fan of Katee Robert, then you’re probably a fan of one of her frequent audiobook narrators, Jenny Nordbak. Jenny has a new romance coming out September 28 — next Tuesday — called “His Leading Lady.” It pairs an A-list actor and an infamous dominatrix in a fake relationship. And this week is the launch of Jenny’s new podcast with our friend Melody from Heaving Bosoms. It’s called Bonkers Romance and it’s going to be amazing, so go subscribe right now! And last but certainly not least: we have merch! Friend of the pod and of life Molly is the creative force behind our new merch. From Simu to Simulation Theory: "Shang-Chi" and "Free Guy"
Hi Smooches! On this short and sweet episode, we’re chatting about our triumphant, fully vaxxed and masked return to the theater. We spend most of the episode talking about the masterpiece that is “Shang-Chi.” We try to keep any spoilers mild as we swoon about the cast, the clothes and the visuals, but honestly, just go see the movie and come back! We also rant about how much Disney sucks, and clumsily unpack the controversy around one of the film’s stars. Then we move on to chatting about “Free Guy,” the friends to lovers trope, and simulation theory. You can visit us at www.makeoutalreadypod.com. Gods Gone Wild: "Loki" and Our Love of Taboo
Hi friends! On this episode, we are burdened with the glorious purpose of discussing the MCU series Loki on Disney+. We talk about the ships and representation (or lack thereof) on the show, and use it as a springboard to talk about taboo in romance, with some more colorful Norse mythology thrown in. As we discuss in the episode, taboos are super personal, and triggers are as well. So please note that we’re going to touch on all sorts of touchy subjects, so if you want to skip this episode or bow out after the shipping discussions, we understand and support you knowing what’s best for you. With that being said, we’ve listed everything we’ve talked about, so if you’d like to do any research into the books we discuss, we hope it’ll be helpful. Descending to the Throne: "Neon Gods" by Katee Robert
Hi friends! On this episode of Make Out Already, we’re descending into the Underworld and sliding right into daddy Hades’s lap. We’re recapping “Neon Gods” by Katee Robert, the first in the Dark Olympus series of spicy, contemporary retellings of Greek myths. We talk a little about Robert’s Wicked Villains series, which is in the same universe as Dark Olympus, and her taboo series. I also bring in a little of my mythology knowledge and recommend another descent myth you should check out, and Meg shares some mythology book recs and a tarot deck we’re keeping an eye out for. Quick note that my audio sounds a little different because I did not plug my headset into my computer. It’s not too distracting, but you might notice the difference. RERELEASE: Sugarbabies, Sexperts and CW Stars
Why are we rereleasing this episode? TO CELEBRATE NEWLY MINTED Ph.D. SHAWNA, our resident sexpert on this episode. On this episode of Make Out Already, we discuss the movie The New Romantic, which you can currently stream on Netflix. It’s about a college student who enters into a mutually beneficial relationship so she can document her sugarbaby experiences in hopes of winning a journalism grant. We’ll talk about whether the movie fits the criteria for a romance and what the movie says about the genre, and we’ll bring in an expert to talk about the movie’s exploration of sex work through an academic lens. We’ll go off on tangents about time travel, disagree heatedly about Brett Dier, and declare our undying love for the BDE of one Camila Mendes. We would very much like to thank our guest this episode, our resident sexpert @shawna_felkins, PhD candidate in gender and women’s studies, sex work researcher, and all-around badass. Make sure to subscribe and follow wherever you listen to your podcasts, and follow us on Instagram @makeoutalreadypod and Twitter @makeout_already. Have a book recommendation for us? Slide into our DMs, or email us at email@example.com. To make the Hopeless Romantic Float, use Fentimans Traditional Rose Lemonade (Liz got hers from Target) and homemade vanilla ice cream. For the ice cream, she used a 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, a cup of milk, and a teaspoon of vanilla. Stir the ingredients together, chill for 30 minutes before putting into an ice cream maker for 10 to 20 minutes, then store in the freezer for a few hours. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, just put the mixture straight in the freezer. Add two scoops to your prettiest glass, pour the lemonade over the ice cream, and sip while daydreaming about your crush. Spike it if you wanna! This was decadent and so delicious. Need a little excitement but maybeee don’t want to go as far as getting drugged by your roommate? Us too. Try these Cupcakes for Two. Use @howsweeteats recipe at www.howsweeteats.com/2011/03/one-bowl-vanilla-cupcakes-for-two and add a little food coloring (instead of molly 😉).

Getting Railed: One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston
Hi friends! On this episode, we recap One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston. It’s her second novel after the very beloved Red, White and Royal Blue. Like that book, it features a same sex couple, a ragtag group of lovingly supportive weirdos, and people who have absolute meltdowns over how swoonworthy their love interest is. But in this one, there’s some paranormal phenomena complicating things. It’s all very wibbly wobbly timey wimey and sciencey wiency. Nailing Those Extracurriculars: "Office Hours" by Katrina Jackson
Hi friends! This is Make Out Already, where we review, dissect and fan cast romance novels and share our love for any media with an HEA. On this episode, we discuss Office Hours by Katrina Jackson. So for whatever reason, Meg and I were in the mood for something angsty, and this sweet workplace romance with a burnt out tenure track sociology professor and her immaculately dressed colleague was not the least bit angsty. So while we went into this one with the wrong mindset, we did love the heroine and found her experiences painfully relatable. Spoilers ahead! The Ice Planet Barbarians Fan Cast that BookTok Deserves
Hi friends! You’re listening to Make Out Already. On this episode, we revisit Not-Hoth to talk about one of our favorite subjects — the big, beautiful blue men and intrepid human women who stole our hearts in Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians series. These books got us through the early days of quarantine last year. We’ve previously done episodes about them and some other works by Ms. Dixon, which we’ll link in the show notes. Recently, the youths on TikTok discovered the series and made it go viral, and it’s been dominating the bestseller list on Amazon. To welcome our new human friends into the rabid fandom that is IPB, we thought it would be fun to do some fan casting. Maybe we can manifest a screen adaptation, because it’s what we deserve. We do want to give general content warnings for the series: Sexual assault, dubious consent, kidnapping, human trafficking, graphic violence, child loss and infertility. The first book in particular gets pretty rough. So please proceed with caution and know that you can jump in anywhere in the series. Spoilers ahead! On Some Cruel Intentions BS: "The Beautiful Ones" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Hi friends! This is Make Out Already, a podcast about romance novels, movies, and anything with a happily ever after. On this episode, we talk about “The Beautiful Ones” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. She’s best known for the book “Mexican Gothic,” and her backlist is getting some well-deserved love. “The Beautiful Ones” is a little historical romance, a little low fantasy/magical realism, and a lot of drama and scandal. Loving this book is now mine and Meg’s only personality trait. Spoilers ahead! Make sure you follow us on Instagram @makeoutalreadypod and on Twitter @makeout_already. Raiders of the Hopeless Simps: "Hidden Sins" by Selena Montgomery
Hi friends! Liz here. On this episode, I’m joined by Deanna, who you should remember from our Midsommar episode. We’re reviewing Hidden Sins by Selena Montgomery, the nom de plume of the future president of the galaxy, Stacey Abrams. Full disclosure — we thought this one was OK. We roast the total simp of a hero while hypocritically simping over Cap and Bucky, and question whether the con artist heroine is actually any good as a con artist. Deanna reveals she is armed with quilting weapons should you try to kidnap her, and we bemoan the unappreciative youths in our friend group who don’t watch most of the TikToks we send them. On this episode, we had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Melody, one half of the romance podcast duo Heaving Bosoms. We talked about “Beach Read” by Emily Henry. It’s Not the ’Rona: Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai
On this episode of Make Out Already, we savor the delectable peach that is Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai (long may she reign). We take a deep dive into some armchair psychology on the heroine and hero of this book, make a few predictions for the third book in the Modern Love series... and wonder if maybe we’re too horny for this rather modest pairing. For the luscious peach torte Meg made in honor of this book, follow the NYT Cooking recipe for a purple plum torte, but with ripe peaches instead: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/3783-original-plum-torte. Black Lives Matter.
We read romance because we believe joy, connection and love can heal humanity. But we don’t have joy in us right now. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and countless others should be alive today. People in the news and people hidden from it, people who loved and were loved, have died because of white supremacy. This moment is a test of our collective humanity, a test we’ve failed over and over again. It is not enough to be sad and angry. It is vital that we act. We will do our very best to amplify the voices of activists and anti-racist organizations. Here are some small ways you can start to help: 1. Follow the work of @rachel.cargle, @mspackyetti, @ibramxk, @laylafsaad and @ijeomaoluo. Those are their Instagram handles. 2. Donate to community bail funds for the protesters putting their bodies on the line during a pandemic. Start with @mnfreedomfund and @blmlouisville Community Bail Fund. 3. Donate to anti-racist organizations such as @splcenter, @raicestexas, @colorofchange and your local @blklivesmatter chapter. 4. Remember that it is not just the crises making national news. @theblackfairygodmotherofficial organizes small fundraisers for families with urgent needs. @thelovelandfoundation funds mental health care for black women and girls. @thenapministry advocates for rest as a tool to dismantle white supremacist capitalism. 5. Call out racism when you see it, especially in your own families and communities. Make racists uncomfortable. Even if it’s a racist you love, love them better by not tolerating their racism. And remember that children are never too young to be educated about anti-racism. 6. Unlearn racist conditioning. Delete the phrase “I’m not a racist” from your vocabulary. We’re reading “Me and White Supremacy” by Layla F. Saad. Owning your own stuff is a great place to start. 7. Make sure your bookshelf reflects the world. Publishing does a terrible job with inclusivity, and romance is not exempt. See: @therippedbodice State of Racial Diversity in Romance Publishing Report. Romance is not trivial — fiction is a powerful tool to teach empathy. Black authors and stories deserve a place on your bookshelf. Black lives matter. Our love to all. — Liz and Meg

An Ode to Alisha Rai, Long May She Reign
On this episode of Make Out Already, we swear fealty to our queen Alisha Rai and highlight her books that we’ve read, in anticipation of our Girl Gone Viral discussion. We discuss the Forbidden Hearts series, the Modern Love series, and one of her earlier titles, A Gentleman in the Street. We look at the picante factor of her different series and talk about the themes that resonate with us in Rai’s writing. Meg makes a strong case that she should be hired to write all back cover copy, and Liz makes a hella problematic case for why Gone Girl is a romance (she said what she said). You should one thousand percent follow Rai on Instagram @alisharaiwrites. While you’re at it, follow us on Instagram @makeoutalreadypod and on Twitter @makeout_already. Do you have a comment, book recommendation, or indecent proposal for us? Slide into the DMs or email us at email@example.com. Weddings, Funerals and Bisexual Alien Blasts: Binge Recs for Romance Fans
Hi friends! On this episode of Make Out Already, we take a break from piling on to your TBR so we can add to your streaming queue. We recommend two series that we think romance readers will love: Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Roswell, New Mexico. The shows have very different vibes, but share a library of romance tropes and both have casts stacked with pretty people. We also discuss how we’re doing during the pandemic, recommend watch-alikes and some books to go with our picks (come on, we weren’t going to miss a chance to sneak some in), and make a case for some of that mattress money. Make sure to follow us on Instagram @makeoutalreadypod and on Twitter @makeout_already. “I’m A Stupid Cat” video: https://youtu.be/qpl5mOAXNl4

One Smoking Hot Ginger Biscuit: Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
On this episode of Make Out Already, we bask in the brilliance of Get A Life, Chloe Brown, by Talia Hibbert. We talk about how the book achieves the perfect comedic tone without being slapstick; fan cast models, pop stars and American congresswomen; and delight in a hero who cooks, goes to therapy and knows how to rev up the motor, if you know what we mean. We show our complete ignorance of British cuisine, and have an existential meltdown over the writing. This was a sweet, funny book that gets into some heavy stuff. So if hearing about intimate partner violence and emotional abuse isn’t something you want to deal with right now, our feelings won’t be hurt if you skip this one. Make sure to subscribe and follow wherever you listen to your podcasts, and follow us on Instagram @makeoutalreadypod and Twitter @makeout_already. Have a book recommendation for us? Slide into our DMs, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Some stuff we mention: The World’s Saddest Google Commercial: https://youtu.be/6xSxXiHwMrg Recipes: Meg’s small batch salted chocolate ginger biscuits are adapted from Hummingbird High. Makes 3 cookies! -3/4 c powdered sugar, sifted -3 tblsp cocoa powder, sifted -a pinch of kosher salt -1 large egg white -3/4 tsp pure vanilla extract -1 tsp chopped candied ginger -1 tblsp finely chopped walnuts/pecans -1/4 c chocolate chips -sprinkle of flaky salt Mix the dry ingredients, then add in the wet and mix just until combined. Fold in the mix-ins. Portion 2 tblsp blobs of dough on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake 15 min in a 350 degree oven, then sprinkle with flaky salt. Pairs well with a romance. ... To make a chamomile latte, heat one cup of milk over medium on the stove, careful not to to let it boil. Stir in a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar to taste. Pour the mixture over a chamomile tea bag and steep. Great tonic for the nerves when your book’s heroes don’t act right. Liz made a cinnamon roll mug cake adapted from Kirbie’s Cravings. She tried this with chocolate milk in the batter and it was very tasty. Recipe available here: https://kirbiecravings.com/cinnamon-roll-mug-cake/

Sugarbabies, Sexperts and CW Stars: The New Romantic Movie Review
