How to Launch a Sustainable Fashion Brand with Factory45

How to Launch a Sustainable Fashion Brand with Factory45

The fashion industry feels split right now - it's either promoting Shein or woman-owned brands that are making a difference. We think that the more people that know about the issues in fashion, the more people will shop in accordance to their values. What like it's hard? Even Kourtney Kardashian is advocating for responsible materials. Shannon Lohr is the founder of Factory45, the online business school trusted by over 500 fashion entrepreneurs since 2014. Over the years she's worked with aspiring designers, all over the globe, to launch or grow their brands in a way that’s better for people and planet. Shannon got her start in 2010 when she co-founded {r}evolution apparel, a sustainable clothing brand for female travelers and minimalists that was featured by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.com.

Exploring Fan-Fueled Climate Fiction with Erica Ferencik

Exploring Fan-Fueled Climate Fiction with Erica Ferencik

There is nowhere on earth Erica Ferencik won’t go to take you out of your head and into the great wild world. An award-winning novelist, Ferencik writes adventure novels featuring women who brave not only internal struggles but face extreme challenges in their environment: remote forests, steaming jungles, and desolated icescapes. GIRL IN ICE is truly a fantastic story that is compelling, chilling and addicting in the best way. Even though the events of the story are fiction, you can identify with the characters emotions rooted in family, loyalty, fear and love. Erica was raised in the wilds of upstate New York during the era when—rightly or wrongly —you could take off after school to explore and no one worried, as long as you were home by dark. Now, she lives in MetroWest Boston with her "very tolerant husband and frankly enormous Maine Coon cat."

Restore the Planet with Regenerative Plastic With Newlight Technologies

Restore the Planet with Regenerative Plastic With Newlight Technologies

Summer is officially here and so is travel. Something you might see or use out and about are single use utensils. Newlight Technologies is revolutionizing typically wasteful products and materials. Please welcome CEO and Co-Founder, Mark Herrema, on the Make Climate Cool Again Podcast.

Mark has spent the last 15 years developing a revolutionary new biomaterial called AirCarbon. By feeding greenhouse gasses to microorganisms found in the ocean, Newlight is able to extract AirCarbon and use it to replace plastic, leather, acetate and other fibers.

Naturally regenerative and carbon-negative, AirCarbon has been used to create Restore FoodWare, which is carried nationwide by Target and has been implemented into Shake Shack locations, and Covalent fashion. A few months ago, it was announced that the use of AirCarbon is going to be explored by Nike in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint further.

Net Zero Series: Flying the Eco-Friendly Skies with Goodwings

Net Zero Series: Flying the Eco-Friendly Skies with Goodwings

Can you guess the number one thing that makes sustainability professionals feel like hypocrites?

It's travel! In fact, I tell all of my podcast guests that they aren't allowed to use that answer to my classic question. But @goodwingstravel is changing all of that. Christian Møller-Holst is the CEO and founder of Goodwings. When you book a hotel with Goodwings, they calculate the carbon spend of your full trip. Yes, that includes your burger, and the plane trip you booked elsewhere.

You simply fill out your chosen method of transportation, and they do the rest. Seems a little too easy?? But I'll take it.

As a serial entrepreneur with a passion for impact, Christian has 20 years of experience with sustainability and CSR. Besides holding the title of CEO, Christian has studied philosophy and business, and holds a Master's Degree from Copenhagen Business, is an ex-army officer, and father of three.

RE:REPORT on Reformation

RE:REPORT on Reformation

This episode is something totally new. I read sustainability reports all the time. Every week. All the time. And I realized I started this journey by reading sustainability reports. I realize most of these reports are forty, sixty, 100+ pages and what does any of it mean? What does a good report look like?

So I decided to take one of the most progressive sustainable brands and their most recent report and dissect it. Reformation was born out of the idea that they are second best to wearing nothing. Their entire brand is about sustainability and they submit reports every quarter. So wouldn't they have a top notch report?

What to expect? We read it together and I ask many questions and add my own commentary to things I would or wouldn't do. This is the first time we are doing this - Maybe we grade them together? You tell me. Let me know your thoughts at info@makeclimatecool.com

We Could All Use A Carbon Diet with Joro

We Could All Use A Carbon Diet with Joro

Well this episode took a turn because when I scheduled it, I didn't know I would be waiting for a hurricane to hit. SO I re-recorded the intro and I think that the current conditions in additional to the discussion about data transparency for our own carbon footprint really hits home. Pun intended. Sanchali Pal was such an inspiration to talk to because she has created a real tool that we can all use on a regular basis to understand our impact. Sanchali Pal, CEO and founder of Joro, tracked her carbon footprint for years on a spreadsheet during grad school before realizing she needed to build a tool to make the process easier for everyone. Joro takes spedning data on our credit cards and applies a carbon equivalent to each purchase so that we can track our impact on a more regular basis, engage in challenges to make reductions and also apply offsets. She attended Princeton University an studied Economics before heading to Harvard Business School. We nearly crossed path at Tesla as interns before she started Joro. Sanchali raised a $1 million to build Joro from Sequoia Capital, a major venture capital group that has backed the likes of Airbnb, Doordash and Dropbox. Get your app on.

How to Scale Net Positive Impact with the Paradise Syndicate

What is paradise? Dirk Christoph from the Paradise Syndicate says that a net positive impact system is paradise. What does this mean? Climate neutral isn't enough. We talk about flipping capitalism, the Banana Point theory and different projects that are making a positive impact. Dirk is the Founder of the Paradise Syndicate, and previously started and built up one of Germany's most successful VR Companies (innoactive.io) after he worked for Siemens and BMW. After becoming a serial entrepreneur, he left the "traditional business world", bought a 38 ft Sailboat and went sailing across most of the Caribbean (from Grenada to Mexico). #43 Election Edition: Make Democracy Work For the Planet with Elected Officials Protect America

Dominic Frongillo's story begins with making history as the youngest person ever elected to serve on the City Council in Caroline, New York, and one of the youngest deputy mayors in the U.S. When fracking threatened New York, Dominic organized hundreds of bipartisan local elected officials to ban fracking statewide and transition away from fossil fuels, inspiring governments around the world to ban fracking.

As a 7-time delegate to the UN climate talks, Dominic co-founded Elected Officials to Protect America to mobilize state and local lawmakers in 50 states for a Green New Deal and federal Climate Emergency Plan. Trained by Al Gore, he was awarded the inaugural Roddenberry Fellowship alongside Occupy Wall Street Founder Micah White and Black Lives Matter founder Alicia Garza.

His work has been covered in more than 300 news stories including CNN, The New York Times, Forbes, The Guardian, and BBC News.

Running Diaperkind stimulated her assiduous nature and allowed her to learn the great lessons of business ownership and leadership, all while enabling fellow parents to achieve a less wasteful lifestyle. A decade later, she is taking that knowledge and passion and pouring it into a new company, Esembly. #40 Companies Listen to Eco Consumers with Sheets and Giggles

Colin McIntosh is Founder & CEO of Sheets & Giggles™, a fast-growing direct-to-consumer brand in the $12B US bedding space. Launched in May 2018 with a nearly $300,000 crowdfunding campaign, S&G became one of the few companies to make $1M in sales in its first 12 months.

S&G places an emphasis on doing good and having fun, especially with sustainably made products and socially responsible business practices. The company's eucalyptus lyocell bedding uses up to 96% less water to make than cotton sheeting, and uses no insecticides or pesticides. The company also plants a tree for every order – planting nearly 20,000 trees in the US from 2019 sales alone – and regularly donates to causes that their community cares about, like the $40,000 S&G recently contributed to COVID–19 emergency relief in Colorado. As a millennial and an inaugural member of Good Business Colorado, Colin also regularly lobbies for progressive issues and causes with a group of over 200 progressive CO business owners.

#37 Is Consumerism Actually Climate Change? with Peter Olah

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Peter Olah has been a life-long environmentalist, capitalist, and ardent believer that organizations (for-profit and non-profit) have a civic and moral duty to do well by their stakeholders while ensuring sustainable practices for the natural world. The chief reason that mankind is in this perilous state is due to the prevalence of market pricing, and the failure to consider the true cost of doing business. This global issue is what led me to pursue a career in the clean energy sector to shift our economy's addiction to fossil fuels towards renewables that are superior in cost, naturally replenishing, and are not nearly as harmful to us and our natural world.
