Pricing Your Work with Andy, Nick, and Steve
In this episode, we discuss the topic of pricing your work. We share our experiences and insights on adjusting prices for friends and family, lowering prices to sell projects, and using subscription-based pricing models. We also talk about the design software we use and where to find inspiration for your designs.

We share their experiences with pricing our products and services, including how we calculate costs and determine profit margins. In this part of the conversation, we discuss various pricing scenarios for different woodworking projects. We analyze the pricing of a farmhouse table, an outdoor picnic table, a round table, slate coasters, and a TARDIS bookshelf.
The conversation touches on the value of learning experiences, the importance of considering materials and labor costs, and the potential of subscription-based pricing models. Overall, the episode provides insights and strategies for pricing projects effectively.

...and we're back!
It’s been a couple of weeks since the last episode, and I wanted to thank you all for your support these last few weeks.
In this episode I’m joined by two of my good friends. One is an actual garage scientist, fellow podcast host, and beard enthusiast. I’m talking about the one and only Luke from Luke in the Garage, and the other is the lord of filament, the man with so many Ds in his name I just call him the Big D, Mr. 3D DIY Dave. We are going to be talking about their experience at the 2023 Catskill Maker Camp, so if you missed out this year, you can live vicariously through these guys, something I have been doing for about 5 years now. We may end up in a bit of a debate, and we will see which one of these guys is the master debater. Luke and Dave, welcome back!

The Maker Collab University with Nick and Christy
Like Buzz and Woody, these two have formed an alliance that inspires Makers from all over the world to join their annual Maker Collab. Now that collaboration has gone beyond the boundaries of an annual competition; some would say to infinity and beyond. If you’re a maker looking to grow your business or learn new skills, my guests today are going to talk about how the Maker Collab has grown to include The Maker Collab University, an educational platform helping you grow your business while doing what you love. Nick (@statedwoodsco) and Christy (@oakhillmillworks) are back!

Blake Mcfarland with BM Sculptures
He once caused an explosion in his garage which gave him an instant facelift. This former Toronto Blue Jays baseball player stepped off the mound in the off season to make tire sculptures, which caught the attention of some big companies like Goodyear, lululemon, and several sports organizations. He was a contestant on season 3 of NBC’s show Making It. He’s a master of epoxy sculptures large and small. Blake Mcfarland with BM Sculptures is here to step on the mound once again while I enjoy the hour d'oeuvres in the Lounge.
Congrats to Grant with @dadcrafted for winning the Patreon giveaway this week. He will be receiving a $25 gift card from SurfPrep.

046 - Lasers, CNC, and Social Media Overload
These two returning guests are a couple of my closest friends in the maker community. We trash talk from time to time, but mostly it’s about our own social media performance. Not only do we have a competition over how much SurfPrep stuff we have, but between the 3 of us we have done enough product reviews to put QVC out of business. Give a warm and awkward welcome to Steve Moseley with Making at Home and Trey Jones with Handcrafted by Trey.

Mike Holmes - Broken Lead Woodworks
He’s a master HVAC mechanic of 29 years, but he’s not here to talk about boring stuff like condenser units. This guy is a man of many talents, and I have it on good authority that juggling is NOT one of them; that MAY explain how his lead, INDEED, got broken. He does however juggle his time being a husband and father of 2 boys along with making some incredible projects in the shop. Mike Holmes with Broken Lead Woodworks is in the Lounge.

Mr. BruDaddy - Bruce Ulrich
Since 2014 this guy has been making handmade goods and furniture, and is a co-host of a podcast called We Built a Thing. He makes some beautiful pieces showcased on his various social media channels, but it’s not just his projects that get him views, it’s his Southern drawl. Handcrafted by Trey Jones
Back by popular demand, today’s guest in the Lounge has created projects from pikler triangles to arcade game tables. He has a laser engraver for every day of the week and keeps them busy when he’s not at his CNC. This guy consistently incorporates his family into his content, and his wife could beat both of us in an arm wrestling competition. If you haven’t seen his morning car dance parties, you’re missing out. Trey Jones with Handcrafted by Trey is back!

Hear about Luke's earlier days in this exclusive after show. No bleep buttons were used in this episode - be aware. LOL

Luke Gelman - Luke is finally on the podcast!
Contrary to popular belief, he’s an actual garage scientist. He’s mastered the science of having fun while building cool things. This woodworking dad has a perfect mix of inappropriate humor and inspiring builds in his daily content. He likes 3d printing, using his CNC, making cool things, and long walks to his garage. It’s Luke in the Garage …and he’s FINALLY on the PODCAAAST!

Suman Sarker with WoodcraftbySuman
He’s the guy that likes to challenge the status quo with his intriguing titles and thumbnails, flex his sharp chisels, and loves the color purple (not the movie). You may have heard him talk about his custom cocobolo handled tools in last year’s holiday hangout episode, and his unique ability to do weird flexes, but this episode we will try to see how many times I can get him to say the word YouTube. Suman Sarker with Woodcraft by Suman is in the Lounge.

Making cool projects with Steve Moseley
What this guy makes with dyed skateboard veneers would make you think he is a hardcore skater, but don’t be fooled. I still haven’t seen him do an ollie or a kickflip. From 3d topographic carvings to epoxy inlaid french cleat wall organization, today’s guest has some incredible builds that definitely inspire. He doesn’t have to go far to start building because he’s clearly Making at Home. Steve Moseley with Making at Home is here.

Burnout - Real Talk
This is a bit of a different episode. Normally I have guests and we talk about their businesses and craft, diving into how they got started and what they plan on doing in the future. This week it's just me, stripped down and no bull. Real talk. I share my experience with burnout and how I overcame, allowing me to recognize the patterns in my life that will hopefully help someone else avoid the pitfall of burnout. I hope you enjoy the episode and share it with someone who has mentioned they may be burned out (or close).
May is mental health month.

Keith Johnson Baby!
He’s the guy that can take an average desk and make it as complicated as possible, adding nooks and crannies that make English muffins look like pancakes. His furry feline helper Lola secretly gets more likes on Instagram than he does, but he’s ok with that because this Cat King is dominating on YouTube. The man who coined the term “Total Boat Baby!” is here. Mr. Keith Johnson, welcome to the lounge.

Some of his most popular videos include a melting table, murphy bar, and unique patterned plywood projects. Would Wood Work? with Anil and Sam
Just wait until you hear this guy’s story. He stared into the mirror after quitting his successful day job and said to himself “I truly believe in myself.” He and his girlfriend started posting on social media the projects they were doing for neighbors and formed a business. Growing their massive following on social media led to droves of real housewives in Atlanta sliding into their DM. Brad Rodriguez with Fix This Build That
In 2017, he turned in his notice for his corporate job and pursued his dream to go full-time inspiring others to build things with their hands. From product reviews and shop organization, to building a jail cell for his son’s phone to stop him from seeing his latest video, he is a familiar face in the maker community. Morgan Hop(fensperger) - AKA (Join the aftershow)
He stands about 12 Titebond jugs tall, with an occasional, almost seasonal, mustache. You may have passed his face on a display at your local Rockler and not even known it. He used to be micro, but dropped the micro to focus on his own jig. (If you don’t get that joke, stay tuned) In his words, “If it ain’t weird, it ain’t on-brand.” With a last name so difficult to pronounce, he shortened it to Hop, Morgan Hop is in the Lounge.

Behind the Brand with SurfPrep Sanding
This episode was recorded with a live studio audience from Workbench Con 2023 in Atlanta. We invited our Patreon members and others to join us while I spoke with Hannah and Skylar from SurfPrep Sanding. SurfPrep has been a long-time partner of Voeltner Woodworking and the Maker Lounge Podcast, and it was a perfect opportunity to sit with them in person to talk about how the business got started, share some great memories, and get you to know more about the family behind the brand. I hope you enjoy this episode.
Thank you to Kristin and the team at Workbench Con for letting us set up this recording space!

Crazy Furniture Design Nick Sawyer | Sawyer Design
His wife told him he needed a hobby, which I know from experience is wife-code for “we need new furniture.” From steam bending to complex joinery, I’ve never seen someone make complicated builds look so easy. I binge-watched his YouTube channel for about 6 hours and instantly doubted whether I was even a woodworker. The dad jokes in his videos make mine sound like step-dad jokes. The only guy I feel comfortable saying “nice curves” to is here in the lounge. Nick Sawyer with Sawyer Design joins me to talk projects, design, and YouTube.

A Glimpse Inside with Chris Burton
Today I have a co-host in the lounge. Maker Conversations is not only the name of her podcast, it’s her persona. She loves talking to all kinds of amazing and talented makers, and yet she wanted to have me on her podcast last week. We had so much fun over there I asked Tiff Marchand to co-host with me today.
His logo may be the only one I’ve seen with a spyglass, but I’ve been spying on his stuff for a long time, and today he is going to give us a Glimpse Inside of his business and how he got started. This maker has made so many french cleat tool holders and other projects, he single-handedly created the Baltic birch shortage. Chris with A Glimpse Inside joins us in the lounge for a great conversation about how he formed his business and some of his earlier projects.

Derek from Malden
If you want to know how to properly say Cah-haht or Smaht, this guy is your tutor. You may have seen him making a commode or working a grinder on the Netflix show Making Fun. This guy makes ZZ Top seem like ZZ Bottom and gives me tremendous beard envy. Not only is this blue-collar maker great on camera building taco launching dinosaurs and glitter farting unicorns, this woodworker makes some amazing signs, furniture, and other custom projects. He’s everyone’s homeboy! Derek from Malden joins us here in the Lounge.

Makers, Collabs, and Competition with Nick and Christy of the Maker Collab
She is an ex-cardiac nurse, now small business owner, but her days of working on hearts isn’t over because she has captured the hearts of makers all over the world. I’m talking about the one and only Christy with Oakhill Millworks. In Christy’s words, this guy likes ducks, not getting haircuts, and is always “Fixin’ to” do something! I agree with all of that because this duck-lovin’ maker always keeps us on our toes trying to figure out what he’s going to make next. Nick with Stated Woods Co is here as well.
While the world was locked away in their homes in total isolation, these two stepped out and brought makers together. What started in 2020 as a small, friendly competition amongst makers, has now grown into its fourth season of collabs, and I’m going to try to get the exclusive on this year’s theme. Today I get the chance to talk with Nick and Christy about the Maker Collab.

Lumber, Mills, and Kilns with Matt Morgan from M2 Lumber
Whether you’re looking for hard wood, or for someone to stick your wood in a kiln for proper treatment, today’s guest in the lounge has your wood covered. His mustache measures approximately ⅓ of a board foot and is as impressive as his business portfolio. “Save the Trees” appears to be this guy’s motto. The only thing cooler than the slabs he makes is his name. Matt with M2 Lumber is with me in the lounge.

Chris Zep with Make Everything
You may have seen him on a show called Assembly Required or in a variety of YouTube videos, building things from a van with an attached BMX ramp or a massive banshee hamster wheel. The only thing his welder hasn’t touched is a bad time. I’m pretty sure his motto is "Don’t Die." He also couldn’t decide what to make, so he called his business Make Everything. Chris Zeppieri is in the lounge.

Holiday Hangout with Suman and Scott Walsh
Welcome to the year end holiday hangout episode. In the Lounge, his dad owns 3 peacocks, one of them is called Scott and the other two have feathers, Scott Walsh is here…and lastly, this guy has not only mastered the art of foley in his videos, sometimes he does woodworking. Mr. Suman is here. Today we’re having a holiday feast, and Jon with Lincoln Street Woodworking was supposed to bring the food, but he is walking uphill in the snow, both ways. Unfortunately Jon couldn't join us for the episode, but that didn't stop us from having a great time.
In this episode we talk about the holidays, goals for 2023, and play a new game we called the ScottSuman game. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. Make sure to check out the after show where we talk about YouTube and content creation with some tips from the guys to level up on YouTube.

Metalworking, Jewelry Making, and Blacksmithing with Lindsay Murphy
Lindsay Murphy began metalworking after her career at NASA was over in 2011. She found herself falling in love with blacksmithing and started making custom art pieces and jewelry. Lindsay participates in makerspaces here in the Houston area and mostly sells her handcrafted pieces online through her website. It was great getting to talk with Lindsay and learn more about metalworking and how she runs her business. Her bio is "Merging nature, art, metalwork, & a hint of geek into sentimental jewelry & collections." You should definitely head over to the link below to see some of her amazing creations.

Bent Snapbacks, Festool, and Non-Binary Metric with Jason Bent
You would know him if you saw him. From his towering stature to his bent-brim snapback. With over 170k YouTube subscribers, this woodworker teaches others how to build a variety of projects. Since 2003, he has been serving in the US Army, traveling around the world, and dishing out orders as a Drill Sergeant. Today, he’s here in the lounge, and I’ve never felt more inclined to do a rep of pushups. Jason Bent with Bents Woodworking is today’s guest in the lounge.
In this episode we talk about how Jason got started in woodworking, how his projects have evolved, his fascination and internship with Festool, and the future of Bents Woodworking.
The format looks a little different than normal because we had some technical difficulties with the recording platform, so there isn't an after show for this week but there are lots of other exclusives on our Patreon page for Patrons only. Adam and Raechal with Makers Challenge Central
In this episode I talk with Raechal and Adam from Makers Challenge Central about how the challenge got started, the future of the Makers Challenge Central, and everything in between. Raechal started the challenge by collaborating with a few other makers on an Anna White design, each with their own unique spin, which ended with Anna judging the finished projects; that spun off into multiple different challenges under the Makers Challenge Central umbrella as she brought Adam on board.
Since then, the two of them have kept busy with the various challenges throughout the year and have landed spots on television and published articles in magazines. The two of them have a vast knowledge on both sides of running a small business and representing other brands, both large and small.
You will NOT want to miss the Patreon After Show if you're interested in working with brands, because both Adam and Raechal represent different brands and have a unique perspective on what brands are looking for. The only way to access the Patreon After Show is by signing up to become a Patreon member at www.patreon.com/makerloungepodcast.

Tyler and Tony with TNT Industries LLC
I had the opportunity to chat with Tony and Tyler, the guys behind the brand TNT Industries. Tony and Tyler are up-and-coming creators who have been working together for quite some time; they got started in farming together and moved into construction before starting their own adventure with the creation of TNT Industries. Recently, TNT Industries LLC has launched a new product called the TNT Clamp Rack (working title) for the garage woodworker. The clamp rack is a modular unit that allows the user to clamp 3 simultaneous glue ups up to 3' x 2'. Built from 2" square tubing, the product comes with a lifetime warranty and is built to last.
Tyler and Tony create fantastic videos and their TNT Industries LLC name will be one everyone will be familiar with very soon. It was great talking with the two of them this week, hearing their story, and learning more about the future of the business. Make sure to give them a follow on their various social media platforms, links below.

Godfather of Woodworking, Izzy Swan
Today, I have a very special guest. He’s a maker, Youtuber, Ameteur Engineer, Artist, and Master of Jig-O-Nometry. I know this because it says so in his bio. If you say his name backwards, it’s the same as it is forward. I’m talking about the Godfather of invention. Izzy Swan.
Izzy Swan is known for his knack for inventing and innovating existing products to be more functional. He has grown his YouTube presence to over 875k subscribers, has a tremendous Instagram presence, and has networked his way to do business with various companies to outsource and sell his ideas. Most recently, Izzy sold his X-Clamp system to Woodpeckers who now produces the product, getting the product into more hands through their marketing channels. Many of Izzy's products can be found in stores throughout the US, including Taylor Toolworks.
Chatting with Izzy was a true joy for me. I have had the chance to get to know Izzy over the last year and he is always genuine and selfless with his time and knowledge. It must also be said that Maggie, who was beside him throughout the podcast, is also quite literally by his side throughout all of his endeavors; she is a true gem of a woman.
I hope you have been enjoying the episodes so far. The best way to get the most out of the content is to join us in the after show by becoming a Patreon member.

Tyler with Temecula Yard Games
Welcome to the Lounge. I’m Matt with Voeltner Woodworking and your host of the Maker Lounge Podcast, where we have a rotating group of makers, hanging out, and talking craft to each other. Thanks for hanging out with us in the lounge.
Today, the guest becomes cohost. The Big D, 3D Dave, is back to cohost with me. Even Chuck Norris asks Dave for 3D Printing advice. We had so much fun in last week’s episode that by a unanimous vote of 1, I asked him back.
Our guest in the lounge today is one whose company motto is “Made for fun,” which is the same phrase my parents used before I was conceived. When his bags hit the board, they slide right in. Tyler with Temecula Yard Games is with us.
Don't forget to check out our after show by becoming a patron (links below).
