Monsters & Mocktails: Halloween Episode, the Rougarou

Happy Spooky Season!! This week Emily tells us about the rougarou, the legendary Cajun werewolf. The rougarou was often used as a cautionary tale for children and adults alike. If you have ever experienced a rougarou let us know!

Our zero proof drink this week is very fitting - it is the Rougarou coffee blend by French Truck Coffee. They typically offer this every year around this time and it is so good! This blend is made up of Honduran and Colombian coffee and has notes of praline, caramel, and chocolate brownie sweetness. Emily also wanted to shout out Clearly Canadian which she loves!

The Murder of Emma Austraw; Episode 39

The Murder of Emma Austraw; Episode 39

Happy Malice Monday! We're back with a brand new true crime case - the Murder of Emma Austraw. April, 1919 - Emma was just 19 years old when she was brutally attacked and murdered near the school where she taught in Derry Township, PA. Three men are arrested and accused of the crime, but justice is not necessarily obtained in this case.

Our mocktail this week is called JONI! A HUGE thank you to our new friend Claire, also the founder of JONI, for sharing with us samples including Verjus Drink Blanc and Rouge. Both drinks are lightly sweet, a little tart, and made from pre-harvest grapes that are picked to give the other grapes a little more elbow room. Enjoy either as is or get creative by incorporating them into your favorite mocktail recipe of choice, or create your own recipe. Stay tuned in the coming months as Claire joins us as a guest on the show. Special shoutout to Carmen and Joanna from Live, Laugh, Murder podcast! Each week Carmen tells Joanna a story that could be the plot of a horror movie or the events of a true crime case. Check out their promo at the top of the episode and give them a listen!

Monsters & Mocktails: The Legend of the Melon Heads

In this week's episode, we have another Monsters & Mocktails special - The Legend of the Melon Heads. Emily shares with us this legend which primarily can be found in three US states: Michigan, Ohio, and Connecticut. Have you heard of this legend? Let us know, and we hope you enjoy!

Our mocktail this week is the Honeydew Lime Mocktail with Mint brought to you by flavourandsavor.com. We think that perhaps Indonesian Cinnamon by Sobreo might pair nicely with the flavor palette of this mocktail - we will be sure to try it out and report back! Also, definitely check out Sobreo (we LOVE them as you can tell!) and their unique mixers that can be incorporated into any zero proof cocktail for an extra boost of flavor.

REPLAY: The Murder of Isabella Ruxton & Mary Rogerson

Happy Malice Monday, mockstars! Life is still a little crazy and we're behind on getting you new content. We promise a new episode next Monday. But in the meantime, we hope you enjoy a replay of the episode that started it all - the murders of Isabella Ruxton and Mary Rogerson. Katie flew solo for the first few episodes of the show, and this was her very first one. Let us know what you think. Please also enjoy the promo from our friends over at Brew Crime. We had the privilege to connect with them at the True Crime and Paranormal Festival a few weeks ago and we're all best friends now of course :-) Please be sure to give them a listen and follow if you want more true crime in your life.

Bonus Episode: Sandra DeFelice with Dying To Be Found Podcast

In this special bonus episode, Katie and Emily guest host on the podcast Dying to be Found. Join host Deb as she tells us about the mysterious murder of Sandra DeFelice and how DNA evidence would help crack the case nearly 40 years later. Thank you Deb for having us on the show! This episode was originally published by Deb on July 19th, 2023 and you can find Dying To Be Found wherever you get your podcasts. "On December 26, 1980, Sandra DeFelice was discovered deceased in her own bed around 9:30 PM. Earlier that day, Sandra's roommate had a visitor who asked to crash on the girl's couch for the day, but was denied. The roommate had escorted this person out of the house on her way to work, and thought nothing more about it. Fast forward to February 2021 where police closed in on Sandra's murderer after fingerprints were left behind at the crime scene. The perpetrator in question turned out to be Paul Nuttal, a 21-year old drifter who was never connected to the case until a modern DNA analysis took place. Paul was soon arrested, but is still awaiting trial while undergoing a psychiatric evaluation." - episode description taken from Dying to be Found.

We're pulling an episode from the archives because admittedly Katie did not have time to edit the next new Monsters & Mocktails episode - we'll try to get that one out soon. But we still have a monster/creepy tale for you this week. This week's episode is a replay of one of our more popular episodes. In episode 13 Emily told us about Petar Blagojevic, likely the first documented vampire. This was also Emily's first episode and we had a ton of fun recording. We hope you enjoy! Episode 28 - The Wineville Chicken Ranch Murders & the Survival of Sanford Clark

All the triggers warnings with this one, y'all! We're back from our much needed vacation and we have a California based survivor story for you. In 1926 in a town formally known as Wineville (now called Mira Loma), a horrible monster named Stewart had a chicken ranch built and forced his young nephew, Sanford, to help him in this endeavor. Sanford was forced to endure torture, physical and mental abuse, and rape from 1926 to 1928. Sanford thankfully is able to escape his nightmare in the end and Uncle Stewart also gets what is coming to him.

In addition to the below sources, I referenced a book called The Road Out of Hell by Anthony Flacco with Jerry Clark for use in this episode. I highly recommend check it out for more info about this case.

A big thank you to my friend Kim for sharing it with me. This week I tell Emily about the death of Otto Koehler, millionaire and president of the San Antonio Brewing Company. Episode 12 - Hidden Skeletons: The Curious Case of Eugene Butler

Episode 12 - Hidden Skeletons: The Curious Case of Eugene Butler

Hold on to your butts, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride! Emily shared this case with me and it is bonkers. Eugene Butler lived a quiet and unassuming life in the late 19th and early 20th century in Niagara, ND, with the occasional night ride across the countryside. He’d later be committed but perhaps not for the reasons you may think based on the episode title. Join us as we talk a little bit about what Eugene may or may not have done.

Our featured podcast this week is
Coffee & Crime: a true crime podcast hosted by Lisa-Marie Imray. We just love her! Every week she sits down with a delicious cup of joe and talks all things true crime. Check out her trailer at the beginning of the episode. You can also find her all over social media @coffeencrimepodcast, and you can find her podcast everywhere you get your podcasts!

We also have an ANNOUNCEMENT! We are so close to having 300 followers on Instagram. Once we reach that threshold we are going to host a giveaway of Mocktail Party written by Kerry Benson, MS, RD & Diana Licalzi, MS, RD! I love this book and I hope you will, too. Help us reach our follower goal so we can launch our very first giveaway. We're @maliceandmocktails on IG. Thank you so much to all our listeners and followers! We love you!

Finally, this week's mocktail is Katie's take on the classic Irish Coffee cocktail. She was inspired by Lisa-Marie's podcast, Coffee & Crime! Traditionally made using strong black coffee and Irish whiskey, we'll simply sub for a whiskey alternative - whatever your favorite it.

ingredients
5-6oz brewed coffee; can be hot or iced
1.5oz whiskey alternative of your choice
sweetener of choice, to taste
frothed cream

1. Pour the brewed coffee into your favorite mug. Add in sweetener of your choosing. If using cold brew I would recommend using a simple syrup so it all mixes well.

2. Add in the whiskey alternative and give everything a stir.

3. Top with the frothed/whipped cream; to get that classic look, pour over the back of a spoon into the mug. Enjoy! Cheers :-)

Episode 11 - The Mysterious Disappearance of Hisashi Fujimura

Welcome back, friends! This week I tell Emily about yet another unsolved case - that of Hisashi Fujimura. This case takes place in 1931, several hundred miles off the coast of the eastern United States, between New York and Nova Scotia. Was it an act of malice? An accident? Episode 10 - Jesse Pomeroy

Episode 10 - Jesse Pomeroy

Wow, we made it to episode 10! To capture this awesome milestone join me as I tell Emily all about Boston's boy torturer and killer, Jesse Pomeroy. Jesse's rein of terror took place in the 1870s, so I am taking you way back. Emily also shares with me a mocktail she found on TikTok (@themindfulmocktail) called a Simple Sunrise Mocktail. It is a super simple AF version of the classic tequila sunrise - just swap out the tequila with your zero proof tequila of choice. Ritual makes a pretty good tequila alternative, and there are several others out there on the market now including Spiritless, Free Spirits, and Sobrii. I have not personally tried these so cannot vouch for their flavor palette, but they are on my list to try :-)

Shoutout to Always Talking Crime podcast hosted by Kimi Thompson! Check out her trailer at the beginning of the episode, and you can find her on Spotify and Podbean, and everywhere you get your podcasts. She is also all over social media and can be found in Instagram and Facebook.
