Episode #69 - A Conversation with Dr. Rebecca Siegel & Bryan Buckley about PTSD During May: Mental Health Awareness Month!

Episode #69 - A Conversation with Dr. Rebecca Siegel & Bryan Buckley about PTSD During May: Mental Health Awareness Month!

Dr. Rebecca Siegel is a clinical psychiatrist and author of the newly published book, The Brain on Cannabis: What You Should Know about Recreational and Medical Marijuana, a comprehensive and myth-busting guide on marijuana use and its effects on the brain. The book also addresses how to effectively talk to young people about recreational marijuana use based on her work as a physician who specializes in the assessment and treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, and ADHD.

In the book, Dr. Siegel reviews the full spectrum of marijuana’s benefits and risks and debunks myths surrounding cannabis and explores the promises and risks of its many therapeutic possibilities. She thoughtfully investigates the potential downsides of cannabis, particularly with regards to brain health referencing The Amen Clinics' brain SPECT imaging studies. Siegel opens each chapter with an overview of contradictory marijuana myths (i.e., “The Myth of Harmlessness: Teens won’t be adversely affected by marijuana use / The Myth of Harmfulness: My teen will be irreparably harmed by marijuana use in the short-term and the long-term”), and concludes with her observations as a doctor, as well a conclusion of “What We Know for Sure.”

Episode #65 - REBROADCAST - George Kalantzis - Marine Corps Combat Veteran, Coach, Author & Podcast Host!

Episode #65 - REBROADCAST - George Kalantzis - Marine Corps Combat Veteran, Coach, Author & Podcast Host!

Join us as we speak with George Kalantzis. In his powerful book about navigating life’s toughest transitions, George shares his personal stories about the moments he almost took his life, his battle with depression, addictions, and divorce for the first time. Fans of poetry and short stories will find an unexpected aspect to the book that will help them reveal their own truths hidden deep within.

After joining the Marine Corps George lost his best friend in the Iraq war. The battle to find out who he was as a man spiraled out of control with addictive behaviors he ignored until he came face to face with death and learned a truth that runs deeper than time – there is nowhere to go, no place to be.

The powerful metaphor is a reminder that the past doesn’t just walk away from you, and time doesn’t heal all wounds. It will follow you everywhere you go until you find the courage to stop running. With hidden prompts for self-reflection, George shows you how to fully accept yourself and rewrite the way you show up to the world. Connect with George at the links below:

Episode #64 - Amy Scruggs - TV Host & Recording Artist/Tammy Oluvic co-founder of Saddles in Service!

Episode #64 - Amy Scruggs - TV Host & Recording Artist/Tammy Oluvic co-founder of Saddles in Service!

Join us as we speak with these two Amazing Ladies & hear how they are helping our Veterans everyday with their talents, skills and dreams! They want a better life for our brave men & women who served & protect our country. Connect with them online at the links below:

Amy:

At the beginning of 2010, Amy decided to dedicate her musical talents to the Veterans and Troops for all her performances. From 2009 through 2011, Amy was selected as the official Spokesperson for the American Veterans (AMVETS) service foundation of California. Amy’s oldest son, Ryan Scruggs stepped into lead guitar in 2011 and shared the stage and dream with her by performing alongside her. Amy's single “Coming Home”, written by Dave Adams and produced by Paul McKenna, is a celebration song for our heroes.

Amy’s Patriotism shines through in her known traditional version of the National Anthem. In 2011, at the request of the United States Army, Los Angeles Recruiting Battalion, Amy was chosen to perform the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium for the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. She recently performed at Military Appreciation Day at San Diego Padres Petco Park Stadium for local Gold Star Families.

Amy is continually dedicated to her support of the veteran and non-profit community through her singing appearances, TV show, community involvement and her 501 (c) 3 ,  “Voice For Heroes”. Amy is also a Member of the Board for "Saddles In Service" a non-profit, veteran operated ranch, offering an equine therapy program for veterans & first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress. "Comin Home" was the official theme song for the American Veterans of California from 2009-2012!

Tammy:

Tammy’s dream of Saddles In Service became a reality when Mike her husband, retired from the United States Navy in 2016. They purchased an equestrian ranch in Alpine, California. A few months later, Tammy learned about a group of horses that had been rescued from an abusive environment and were in need of forever homes. Two days later, they had their first two rescue horses. Today, they home thirteen amazing horses, each one with a unique story.

Tammy wanted to not only rescue the horses but also give them a new purpose. Her passion for Veterans and their families, paired with her love of horses, created the idea of Saddles In Service. The idea grew to include First Responders, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs, and their families. These Heroes have a calling to serve their Nation and their local communities. Throughout their service, many of these Heroes encounter unimaginable hardships that can create lifelong physical and mental health challenges. Tammy wanted to create a place where Heroes can begin their journey of health alongside rescue horses.

In 2017, Tammy and Mike started to put the foundation in motion. Tammy enlisted the help of her good friend, Jill Breen. Together, they created the non-profit organization known as Saddles in Service. Saddles in Service opened to the public in December of 2017.

Our mission is to provide mental health wellness and healing for Active Duty Military, Veterans, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, First Responders, and their families that have been diagnosed with or are experiencing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), anxiety, depression, job-related stress, and/or traumatic brain injuries by partnering them with a rescued horse at no cost to them.
