Yemi Bolatiwa is a London born & bred soul singer who is now proudly part of the Manchester music scene. Versatile and with no genre boundaries; Yemi is a writer of songs about empowerment, positivity, and love. As a performer, she takes pride in her powerful, energetic performances with soul being at the heart of her singing style. We have been lucky enough to have Yemi perform at our events and even contribute to our talent development programme mjf soundcheck.
Yemi also works as an Engagement Officer at Z-arts, who work to inspire and enable generations of young people from Greater Manchester and the North West to use creativity to maximise their potential.

Sir Richard Leese was leader of Manchester City Council from 1996-2021, and in his own words - a ‘Man City fan but no longer sad, and Proud citizen of Manchester’. Sir Richard was first elected to Manchester City Council in 1984, becoming deputy leader in 1990 and leader in 1996. He was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2006 for his "services to local government".
Richard has been a wonderful advocate for culture, and more intimately, manchester jazz festival through the years and we were honoured to have him talk about music he holds close to his heart!

Step into the mind of Tess Hirst - a beautiful space of thoughtful songwriting, humidity and tales of....hilarity and humility!
Tess studied at Leeds College of Music where she focused on performance, lyricism and composition. Following a stint in LA honing her songwriting craft, she completed a masters in Ethnomusicology from SOAS University of London where she studied Cuban and Atlantic African music. Tess self-released her debut EP ‘Love’s Sunday’ in 2015 and she and Award-winning bassist Daniel Casimir released thier debut album ‘These Days’ in November 2019 via the pioneering London-based record label, Jazz Re:freshed, whom Tess also works with as an event producer
A small but relentlessly determined organisation, Jazz re:freshed has its hands in many pies, hosting a weekly live residency, a record label, festival, film club, band development programme, club night, workshops and more.

Roger Wilson - co-founder and chief of operations at Black Lives in Music joins us to talk about his fantasy festival (spoiler alert - champagne, suits and an inclusive environment feature prominently!)
Roger has many years experience on both sides of the stage as a musician, educator, tour manager and administrator so he was DEFINITELY up for the job of tackling a fantasy festival.
Black Lives in Music exists to dismantle racism within the music industry and to achieve equality for Black professionals at all levels and in all areas of the UK Jazz and Classical industry. Manchester jazz festival are proud to be a founding partner of this organisation.
