Clay is a pioneering hemp breeder and researcher with a passion for unlocking the full potential of this versatile plant. With a background in plant breeding and a deep understanding of the science behind hemp, Clay has made it his mission to develop innovative varieties that are both sustainable and deliver real benefits to farmers, industry, and the environment. Clay's work has pushed the boundaries of what is possible with hemp, and they have been recognized by Texas A&M and the industry for their contributions. Through years of research and development, Clay has developed cultivars that are southern U.S. adapted, compliant (less than 0.3% THC), and high in other non-psycho active cannabinoids. Making them a valuable resource for farmers and manufacturers alike. In addition to their breeding work, Clay is also a tireless advocate for the responsible use and legalization of hemp, sharing their knowledge and expertise with others in the industry and working to educate the public about the many benefits of this amazing plant. With their innovative work and commitment to advancing the field, Clay is helping to change the perception of hemp and making a positive impact on the lives of people and the planet. This technology makes a healthy home for the occupants and makes for a healthier environment by providing an excellent practice of environmental stewardship. Hemp opens many such opportunities in the construction industry. This attracted Ray to taking a leadership role in the industry. John possesses over 30 years of experience in hemp related research, businesses and technology development. His experience was born out of his Master’s thesis in history. Back in the early 90’s, John located the Bureau of Narcotics’ “Marihuana Tax Act of 1937” document collection on a destruction list in an obscure record center in Maryland. The document collection was still classified, but John was able to gain access through a successful Freedom of Information Act request. Years of research resulted in a unique education about the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurs and innovators during the Great Depression and World War II to develop hemp as an industrial commodity. Eventually, John put this knowledge to use to build a business and, over the past 15 years, he has played a key role in the founding and development of three companies in the hemp fiber industry. His achievements include technology patents and the production of the first ever US grown and processed hemp-cotton blend yarn at commercial scale. Currently, John drives innovation and guides strategy at Hemp Ventures. Joining the company in late 2019, he played an instrumental role in helping the company achieve its first major milestone in 2022 with the design and installation management of a three ton per hour hemp decortication line. Since this installation, the client has become a major player in the hemp space. Continuing to push system innovation, John is currently spearheading a collaboration between Hemp Ventures and the USDA. This work focuses on improving efficiency and includes the development of a new decorticator. Through Hemp Ventures, John is also engaged to design and install two more hemp decortication lines. Outside of Hemp Ventures, John is leading a project to commercialize newly patented closed-loop zero-waste, clean and safe technology to make cellulosic fiber, bioplastics, and other advanced materials from hemp fiber, hurd, and seed hulls. For this morning, we’ll talk about: 1. History why hemp was made illegal 2. Relationship between decortication technology of the past and now. 3. Process innovation 4. Production innovation 5. He started out selling t-shirts made from hemp after leaving college, even though growing hemp was still illegal in Canada, and grew that business into a multi-million $ company in just a few short years.
