On this special episode of Another Day, Another Adventure, Colton & Sakaki have a somewhat unorganized talk in order to get their feelings out about Toriyama's passing and ruminate on what his influence meant to both the world and their friendship.

EP. 239 - Dragon Ball: That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha

EP. 239 - Dragon Ball: That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha

On March 1st, 2024, Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball (amongst many other works), passed away at the age of 68, and the world is worse without him in it, but that won't stop us from celebrating his life and the legacy he left behind. This episode of the podcast contains the first ever discussion we ever recorded exclusively for our Patreon back in 2019. A discussion featuring our good friends, Sakaki (founder of Weekly Shogakukan Edition) and Maxy Barnard (Shonen Jump enthusiast and contributor to the Shonen Flop podcast), about That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha! A manga that you would be right to assume is one that's about how lame Yamcha is and why its so funny how lame he is, but really, it is a manga for Dragon Ball fans, by a Dragon Ball fan! Enjoy!

Be sure to take our annual podcast survey by Sunday, March 17th, for a chance to win some free manga!!

EP. 226 - Super Sentai: Himitsu Sentai Gorenger

EP. 226 - Super Sentai: Himitsu Sentai Gorenger

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by tokusatsu enthusiasts, Grant & Patrick, from the Super Senpai Podcast, to discuss Shotaro Ishinomori's original Himitsu Sentai Gorenger manga released by Seven Seas! Not only a comic which ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday back in 1975 that served as the tie-in to the television show of the same name, but was a starting point for what would eventually become another staple iconic tokusatsu franchise just as big, if not bigger, than Kamen Rider! While the comic itself is much more transparently a commercial product tie-in for an existing tv show than Kamen Rider was, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to love! Join us as we discuss why Gorenger, as well as Super Sentai and tokusatu as a whole, is fun! Enjoy!! Manga Mavericks On TV #02: "Yolo: Silver Destiny w/Michael Cusack, Sarah Bishop, & Todor Manojlovic"

Manga Mavericks On TV #02: "Yolo: Silver Destiny w/Michael Cusack, Sarah Bishop, & Todor Manojlovic"

Hi yo, Yolo!

Hey there folks in tv land! Don’t touch that dial, and don’t change the channel, you’re tuned into the right podcast station - welcome back to Manga Mavericks On TV! It’s been a long time since our previous episode covering the first season of Central Park, but we’re finally back with another special episode because we got a special opportunity to both cover the premiere episodes of the newest season of adult swim’s aussiest animated series, Yolo: Silver Destiny, as well as interview its creator, the incredible Michael Cusack and  the show’s lead actors Sarah Bishop and Todor Manojlovic!

As you’ll hear in the interview and review, I really enjoyed the show and getting a chance to preview the new season before it premiered, and had a lot to discuss with Michael, Sarah, and Tod about their thoughts on the show’s dip into serialization, how the show’s look has been refined without losing the charm of its animation, the series’ focus on female friendship and toxic relationships, and where the show may be headed in the future! Plus, Michael and Todor answer where the season’s new title, Silver Destiny, comes from - and you may be surprised to learn what’s in a name!

Before we get into the show proper, I want to take a commercial break to announce that this year’s annual Manga Mavericks podcast survey is now live! Vote for your favorite podcast episodes, guests, thumbnails, and more from 2022, and let us know your favorite parts of the show, your podcast preferences, and what you’d like to see us cover in 2023 and beyond! Plus, all participants of the survey will be entered into a special giveaway to win a manga of their choosing, including volumes of series we’ve covered before on the show, convention exclusives, limited releases, and select issues of Shonen Jump! The survey will be live until February 28th, so get your votes in now! Looking forward to learning what your guys’ favorite episodes and parts of the show were last year, and what we can look forward to making for you in 2023 and beyond!

And now, let’s get right back to the show and this party started, and take our destined leap into a sliver of Silver Desitny with our interview with Michael, Sarah, and Todor, and stick around after these messages for my thoughts the first few episodes of the season and my pitch to watch it for so many reasons!

Manga Mavericks @ Movies #49: "Adult Swim Yule Log w/Casper Kelly"

Manga Mavericks @ Movies #49: "Adult Swim Yule Log w/Casper Kelly"

Hello everybody and welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the show where we don’t talk smack about movies, we celebrate them, except for the rare occasions we do talk smack about movies, but that wouldn’t be very Christmasy of us would it?

Yes, it’s been a while, but we’re back to throw another log on the @ Movies fire just in time for Yule as a Christmas gift to our dear listeners, presenting our first ever special Manga Mavericks @ Movies interview with Casper Kelly, the creator of many [adult swim] classics like Stroker & Hoop, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Too Many Cooks, Final Deployment 4, and his newest special and first ever feature film, Adult Swim’s Yule Log (aka The Fireplace)!

Yule Log was the wonderful wintertime gift we didn’t know we wanted when it premiered after the Rick & Morty season finale last Sunday night, it’s the kind of special surprise and creative novelty that I absolutely love [adult swim] for and why they’re still the best network around, because no other network would greenlight a feature film based around a Yule Log video gone horribly wrong like this. But the film is so much more than just an inspired gimmick, and we go deep with Casper to ask burning questions about what sparks his imagination and lit the fire of the themes placed in the film, and he lays down a lot of fascinating insights you’ll want to log!

If you have not seen Yule Log yet I highly recommend you go to adult swim’s website or HBO MAX and watch it first, going in completely blind, and then coming back to this interview. I do not avoid spoilers in my questions and one of mine involves discussing the ending of the film and its implications, so definitely watch the film first, and don’t start a flame war with me if you don’t!

But enough burning the midnight oil, let’s crawl into the fireplace and chat with the man behind this Yuletime jewel sublime, Casper Kelly!

EP. 218: Red Sprite

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by both Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory and Shonen Flop, as well as Doctor from the SSAA Podcast, to discuss yet another Jump Stop manga with Tomohiro Yagi's Red Sprite! A series centered around protagonist, Tatsu Frampt, who after having his orphan friends taken away to be used as human batteries by a definitely-not-fascist government, crashes their country's dictator's highly televised rally and commandeers an airship in order to find his friends and start up their own independent nation! The nation of Manga Mavericks however is a little split this time around, as some of its citizens find this series to be sort of an enjoyable, breezy read, despite it clearly not living up to its potential. While other citizens find this series so frustratingly barren of any kind of set up and payoff for anything it wants to explore, that they might just consider it one of the worst Jump Stop manga ever covered on the show! What side do you fall on? Listen to the episode and decide for yourself!

Manga Mavericks EP. 215: Gakkyu Hotei (School Judgment)

Manga Mavericks EP. 215: Gakkyu Hotei (School Judgment)

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by David from the Shonen Flop podcast for what is possibly the biggest trial of the century! As they will have to argue why Gakkyu Hotei (aka School Judgment) is one of, if not the worst manga they have ever covered on the show!! Gakkyu Hotei being a series written by Nobuaki Enoki and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (also known as the artist of both Death Note & Bakuman), centered in a world where Japanese grade schools are corrupted to the point where the government creates the School Judgment System! Where elementary school students can take their grievances and discuss them during Classroom Arbitration sessions! Trials for children by children! With the series' protagonist and defense attorney, Abaku Inugami, solving all kinds of cases ranging from who dismembered the classroom pet to figuring out the identity of local snack (NOT DRUG) dealers, all while getting closer to finding out who murdered his old classmates on that fateful day known as the Bloody Classroom Session!! Now you might be saying to yourself, "Huh, that doesn't sound too bad!", but trust us, its not only mostly mediocre, but also contains a lot of weird, creepy choices that Enoki himself is a little too boastful about and proud of. What are those choices, you ask? Enter the court and find out!!

Manga Mavericks EP. 209: Our Colors

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum discuss Gengoroh Tagame's Our Colors with translator of the book, Anne Ishii! Our Colors is Tagame's newest all ages comic about a high schooler named Sora Itoda, who struggles with being himself around most of his family and friends because he hasn't worked up the courage to come out yet. That is, until he meets, Mr. Amamiya, the owner of a hidden local café and the first real gay person Sora becomes friends with who inspires him little by little to start living as his true self (but little does Sora know, he may end up doing the same for Mr. Amamiya as well). The Mavericks discuss with Anne about her time translating the series, as well as why it may be even better then Tagame's previous all ages work, My Brother's Husband! Enjoy! Manga Mavericks EP. 208: My Brother's Husband

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we're releasing a compilation of our thoughts over the years on Gengoroh Tagame's My Brother's Husband! A story about a single father who has to face his internalized prejudices in order to accept certain members of his family for who they are. The first discussion comes from Episode 35 of the podcast when we went over our first impressions of the series with Pantheon's release of the first volume back in 2017, with the second discussion being the bonus podcast we released on our Patreon covering the rest of the series three years later in 2020! Our good friend, Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory and Shonen Flop joined us for both podcasts! We three, along with the podcast, may have changed a lot in the past five years altogether, but our love for My Brother's Husband certainly has not! Join us next week as we review Gengoroh Tagame's Our Colors with special guest and translator of the series, Anne Ishi!! Manga Mavericks EP. 203: Dr. Slump

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by James, aka @That1WelderGuy (host of such podcasts as Kicking Stones & Deal With the Devils), Joey Weiser (Eisner Award nominated comic artist of such series as Mermin, Ghost Hog and Dragon Racer) and Mike Toole (Editor-at-large at Anime News Network & Associate Producer at Discotek) to discuss even more Akira Toriyama comics with his very first, smash hit series, Dr. Slump! A comedy gag manga taking place in the whacky town of Penguin Village centered around the adventures of chaotic and playful robot girl, Arale, and the rest of her cartoon pals! We discuss why Dr. Slump is one of the best gag manga ever made and how important and influential it is, despite it not having the same worldwide appeal outside of Japan like Dragon Ball did. N'joy! Manga Mavericks EP. 202: Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater

Manga Mavericks EP. 202: Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by Mike (VegettoEX), one of the founders of the biggest Dragon Ball fansite on the internet, Kanzenshuu, as well as Darren Vogt, artist extraordinaire and one of the hosts of the Comics on the Spot podcast, to discuss Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater! A collection of comics from Akira Toriyama spanning across multiple decades of his career from before the start of Dr Slump to near the end of Dragon Ball! Toriyama is one of our favorite manga artists of all time, so there was no way we wouldn't cover more of his comics at some point, especially with a new collection of his stories that have never been released before officially in English until recently! We cover this collection of over 20 stories as exhaustively as possible, as Mike provides a lot of much needed context for the publication of a lot of them and pinpoint where Toriyama was in his career at the time of each of them, while Darren provides his perspective as a fellow artist and what makes Toriyama's comics craft so interesting even as far back as his pre-Dr Slump days! Join us as we rediscover our love of Toriyama's works and reevaluate why he's simply one of the best at what he does! Special thanks to Darren for providing the thumbnail image for this episode of the podcast! Be sure to follow him on Twitter for more of his great artwork! Manga Mavericks EP. 199: "Yona of the Dawn Q&A Extravaganza!!"

Manga Mavericks EP. 199: "Yona of the Dawn Q&A Extravaganza!!"

It may have taken a thousand years for the dragon warriors to reunite, but it only took us a couple of weeks! We still had so much more to explore in the world of Yona of the Dawn that we knew we had to return to answer the questions of the people! We’re once again rejoined by our own Happy Hungry Bunch, the Dragon Warriors of the Yona fandom; Marion, host of the Good Friends Anime Club, MHA Podcast, Shaman King Podcast, & The View From the Top!, Caitlin, editor for Anime Feminist and writer for Anime News Network and her own blog I Have a Heroine Problem, and Olive St. Sauver, writer for ButWhyTho?! We discuss several thoughtful questions curious about what we think sets Yona apart from other series, as well as the strengths of its titular protagonist and her growth throughout the story. In the process, we also interrogate questions that attempt to pedestalize Yona above other shojo manga as we challenge broad assumptions about what shojo manga are like and female protagonists should be that come from perspectives seemingly formed through either innocent inexperience or myopic misogyny. We also delve deeper into themes and motifs that define the series, including various forms of symbolism in the manga and the conflicts between divinity and humanity, destiny and free will. We also speculate on the past and futures of various characters and what we may have yet to learn about them, and the development of their relationships with one another. All the while we laugh, cry, rage, and rave as we share the good word about Yona and a bunch of things it does well that makes us happy and hungry to read more! Manga Mavericks EP. 198: "Yona of the Dawn"

Manga Mavericks EP. 198: "Yona of the Dawn"

It’s the dawn of a new podcast adventure as we’re embarking on a journey into one of the most epic modern fantasy adventure manga, Mizuho Kusanagi’s Yona of the Dawn. And joining us on our quest are some legendary dragons of the fandom, Marion, host of the Good Friends Anime Club, Saturday Night Shoggy, MHA Podcast, Shaman King Podcast, & The View From the Top!, Caitlin Moore, editor for Anime Feminist and writer for Anime News Network and her own blog I Have a Heroine Problem, and Olive St. Sauver, writer for ButWhyTho?! Yona of the Dawn follows the journey of the eponymous Yona, the crimson-haired teenage princess of a pan-Asian amalgam of Korea, Japan, & China called Kohka. Yona is in love with her first cousin Su-won and has a love-hate relationship with her bodyguard Hak, both of whom have been her longtime childhood friends. She confesses her love for Su-won on her 16th birthday, but when she goes to tell her father about her feelings, she finds him being murdered by Su-won himself. Su-won has staged a coup against King Il because the latter’s pacifistic and non-interventionist policies have put the country in dire straits and as revenge for murdering his father, Yu-hon. At the urging of his advisor, Kei-shuk, Su-won also nearly executes Yona, but she is rescued by Hak and they go on the run. Over the course of her journey and after meeting and befriending the legendary Dragon Warriors, Yona gets stronger and more confident in her battle skills. She realizes that the people of Kohka are suffering from a ton of problems due to her father’s mismanagement, so rather than reclaim the throne, she resolves to do what she can as a wandering nomad going around the kingdom to help improve the living conditions of the people and stamp out criminals and corrupt government officials exploiting them. But as Yona and her companions achieve results in helping improve things in the Kohka kingdom and neutralizing foreign threats, their reputation grows amongst the people who believe in the legend of the dragon warriors and start worshipping her and them as godly beings, dividing the loyalties of the people between Yona and Su-won and threatening to factionalize the unified kingdom that the latter so desired to create... We discuss our thoughts on Yona’s growth as a heroine, the complicated relationship between her, Hak, and Su-won, and how the series challenges the concepts of prophecy and the divine authority, exploring what it means to be a leader and what it takes to lead. We also gush and argue about our favorite Dragon Warriors, and champion our favorite supporting characters like Yun, Riri, and (perhaps surprisingly?) Tae-jun! We also speculate about the direction of the story, debate the merits of the Xing arc, explore Yona’s obliviousness and Hak’s brazenness in their slow-burn romance, and explain just why Yona is both a throwback to the 90s shojo fantasies of yore while also being the best possible version of them, and why it satisfies a craving for more action-focused shojo fantasy works that’re so few and far between these days. Yona’s story and world are so rich with detail that we couldn’t contain our discussion to just one podcast, so look forward to another equally meaty Q&A podcast next week to go over even more of our thoughts and theories on the series! Wade by the Supreme Court and thereby nationwide abortion rights protections, we’re also providing a list of links to abortion funds and organizations to help spread awareness of ways pregnant people can find safe access and financial aid for abortion services. Manga Mavericks EP. 197: Kamen Rider

Manga Mavericks EP. 197: Kamen Rider

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined once again by John from the Mercury Falcon Youtube channel, as well as first time guest and manga letterer, Phil Christie, to finally discuss one of Shotaro Ishinomori's many classic manga titles with Kamen Rider! One of two of the biggest long lasting tokusatsu hero franchises Ishinomori was responsible for creating about a man who, after being kidnapped by an evil organization known as Shocker and turned into a cyborg, dons the superhero persona of Kamen Rider, the defender of justice! Join us as we gush about Ishinomori's amazing art and rave about how fun the series was to read, but also how we feel the development of both the story and the characters fall a bit flat due to the comic needing to stay consistent with the then concurrently airing television series. Plus, John gives us a lot of history on the background and development of Kamen Rider, while Phil discusses his process while working on the lettering for the manga's release from Seven Seas! Listen as we JUMP for joy and KICK our feet in the air while we discuss why this series is still a joy to read even over 50 years later!! Manga Mavericks EP. 195: "My Wandering Warrior Existence"

Manga Mavericks EP. 195: "My Wandering Warrior Existence"

Nagata Kabi has explored her struggles with her physical and mental health in her previous memoirs, and now turns her attention to one of her biggest lifelong hurdles - love. Okazu founder and yuri scholar extraordinaire Erica Friedman joins us once again to discuss the latest chapter in Kabi’s ongoing and evolving memoir narrative, My Wandering Warrior Existence. Kabi uses the evocative image and anecdote of holding a wedding dress photo shoot as a springboard for exploring her desire to love and be loved, and her frustrations figuring out how to do that, including her experiences with online dating apps. We come to understand why she’s afraid to meet and form relationships with people, a response that stems from lingering issues about her own negative self-image, and a mistrust of other people in part caused by, CONTENT WARNING, a horrifically traumatic sexual assault she experienced as a child. Which, because of the particular descriptiveness and upsetting nature of the story, we encourage you to use your discretion and the timestamps in the podcast breakdown below as to whether you rather skip that part of the discussion. But lest you fear Wandering Warrior finds Kabi drowning in her sorrows and traumas, we discuss how the book instead reflects the emotional growth and self-awareness that Kabi has come to understand over her previous books. This book finds Kabi taking in her memoirs in a new, confident direction with a clear thesis and structured storytelling designed with a message to the reader in mind, and we explore how it represents a positive direction for her as an artist and storyteller as we appreciate the messages she imparts in the book and her experiences and thoughts resonate with our own. Kabi may still be a wanderer in the landscape of love, but like a warrior, she’s held firm in her resolve to find happiness, and we’re more than happy to travel with her on her journey into whatever unknown territory the future may bring. #Lum Squad #12: "Moo-ving Stories!"

#Lum Squad #12: "Moo-ving Stories!"

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We’re approaching the 2/3rds mark of the series’ volume count as we head into the first half of the 11th omnibus! Not only that, we’re entering one of the strongest periods for the series to date, and this volume in particular is filled with classic chapters that offered so much to talk about that we went on for two hours on just the first half alone! We had good reason to, however, as we discuss iconic stories like the “Blue-White Flames of Anger” arc and pivotal character-building chapters centered on Ataru and Lum’s relationship like “The Glove of Love and Conflict” and the deceptively emotional “Lum Becomes a Cow!” We also discuss the various hilarious chapters in-between, from the absurdly extravagant festive farce of Mendo’s Christmas Party to transformation antics gone unthinkably wrong! We also spend a lot of time discussing recurring themes and notable details that pervade the series in these chapters, like Kosuke and Torajima becoming more prominent, the Ryunosuke/Shinobu ship, the differences between Lum and Oyuki as alien royalty, the shift in Lum’s relationships with both her friend group and Shinobu, and a whole lot more! It’s a podcast stuffed full of surprises and while we haven’t hidden a bomb inside, we still think you’ll have a blast!
