DEHUMANIZATION IN MOVIES- Colonialism, Racism, Orientalism, and the Film Industry

DEHUMANIZATION IN MOVIES- Colonialism, Racism, Orientalism, and the Film Industry

Nowadays we might cringe when we see movies like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, but people back then didn’t do so at all. On the contrary: the movie was, and it still is critically acclaimed and part of pop culture due to USA’s cultural hegemony over the world.

In this video essay I talk about colonialism in the film industry, propaganda, dehumanization, how important is the film industry for political hegemony, how certain marginalized groups are dehumanized in the film industry and why, Orientalism and how the movie Dune uses Orientalist tropes, and what to do next.

BARBIE SNUBBING IS NOT A FEMINIST ISSUE- womanhood in the film industry.

BARBIE SNUBBING IS NOT A FEMINIST ISSUE- womanhood in the film industry.

White feminism sets the agenda of the things we should care about that we should be outrage about, and I feel like the whole Barbie movie controversy is not the exception.

What happened with the Barbie movie? Long story short, Greta Gerwig, the director of the Barbie movie, and Margot Robbie, the actress who plays Barbie, didn’t get an Oscar nomination.

In this episode we answer the question: is Margo Robbie and Greta Gerwig not getting an Oscar nomination a feminist issue? What are real feminist issues? Who determines what are “real feminist issues”? womanhood in film, all into the global context of women rights.

COBALT IS DESTROYING THE DR CONGO- History, colonialism, and green-washing

COBALT IS DESTROYING THE DR CONGO- History, colonialism, and green-washing

To call what’s happening in the Democratic Republic of Congo one of the worst humanitarian crises in the past decades is an understatement. What’s happening in Congo it’s not only a consequence of colonialism, but also still colonialism and exploitation of the global south in its maximum expression.

In this special episode we do a deep dive into de situation of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We talk about the history, from colonial times, King Leopold II Free Congo State, Belgian Congo, Patrice Lumumba, Mobutu, the Congo Wars, and DR Congo recent event.

Also, about cobalt and all the mineral riches in the DR Congo, which are the mining companies that are directly responsible for the aggressive exploitation and human rights abuses, what are the brutal conditions in which people who work in the mines are under, and how green washing is making this situation much worse.

Some people, including the future empress of Mars Grimes, think that the only way to achieve true equality is with a society controlled by AI. But is that really the case? In this episode we discuss if AI is the solution to inequality in society from and intersectional, decolonial perspective.

The event was organized by Amnesty Latinamerika in collaboration with La Dekoloniala, Chola Contravisual, Hysterix, Las Insurgentes, Peaceworks Stockholm, Gallery Majkens, and Detroit Gallery.

Every 28th of September is the Day for the Decriminalization and Legalization of Abortion.

In this performance I talk about the situation of abortion rights in the Dominican Republic. Esperancita was a 16 years old Dominican girl who died of leukemia in 2012. She was refused a treatment that woul have saved her life because she was 9 weeks pregnant, and chemotherapy could have killed the fetus.

E24 Why am I scared of white feminism?

In this episode I talk about what is white feminism, why white feminism is so scary and dangerous, and historical events with my personal experiences.  Every time I hear someone saying “we need more cis women in leadership positions” I feel a little uncomfortable. I remember Hillary Clinton saying in an interview that “in order for Europe to stop the rise of the far-right and fascism, Europe must curve migration”.

In this episode I talk about that the mainstream environmental movement is not political enough, there's  a racist and colonial agenda behind the exploitation of natural resources, and why environmental activism spaces must be intersectional.

E16 Mirabal sisters. International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Live reading

Live reading of my text about the Mirabal Sisters, for the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Read at a manifestation organized by the Swedish political party Feminist Initiative. Stockholm Sweden 25th november 2019. Video is my YouTube channel

On the 25th of November of 1960, Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa Mirabal, together with their friend Rufino de la Cruz, were tortured and brutally murdered by Dominican Military Intelligence agents, directly ordered by Trujillo himself, when they were driving back home from visiting their husbands and other members of the anti-trujillist organization 14 de junio, who were political prisoners by that time.
