MangroveCommunity.org: Reasonable Doubt - Covid-19 Edition

This week on the "Reasonable Doubt" Podcast Series we move our attention from those helping the local community to local politics . This week we meet with Dr. Letitia Plummer,  Houston City Council At-Large Position 4, to discuss local COVID-19 information. Check out this episode along with all of the other information about the Mangrove Community at MangroveCommunity.org

Guest Information: https://plummerforhouston.com/

Dr. Letitia Plummer is a successful business owner with a consistent record of community service.  She is a dentist, a volunteer, and a mom, with deep roots in the Bayou City, and will bring her history of a thriving Houston experience to her role representing Position 5.  Like many Houstonians, Letitia was raised in a multicultural household, an experience that has shaped everything she does. She was born to an African American father and a Yemeni-Indian mother in Boston, and the family arrived back in Houston in 1973. She attended HISD public schools, and after graduating from The High School for Health Professionals (now known as DeBakey High School for Health Professions), Letitia enrolled at Spelman College, one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation and was active in Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Immediately after college, she returned to Texas, where she graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry and followed in her father’s footsteps as a practicing dentist. Soon thereafter, she opened her first of two dental practices in the Houston-area. As a dentist, she has been recognized by fellow Houstonians with numerous awards including “Top Professionals on the Fast Track” and “Houston’s Top Dentist.”  Serving the people of Houston runs in the Plummer family DNA. Her grandfather was a Tuskegee Airman flight instructor, and after the war, he became the first African-American investigator for the Harris County D.A. He founded and helped establish the Houston Lawyers Association (the first organized Bar Association for African-American lawyers in Houston), the Harris County and Texas Councils of Voters, and the Texas Landowners Association. Letitia’s father sits on the Board of Directors for the Debakey High School for Health Professions and is a former member of the Executive Committee for the Houston Branch of the NAACP. In addition, legendary congressman and civil rights hero, Mickey Leland, was not only a family friend but also an “uncle” to the Plummer children. Letitia fondly remembers volunteering as a 12-year-old child to help “Uncle Mickey” in his Congressional campaign. These three important people in Letitia’s life helped instill in her the need for quality individuals in the arena of public service.  Letitia is raising her three sons near NRG Park, imparting the same values her parents instilled in her: education, work ethic, and charity/volunteerism. Each month the family gives their time to one of an assortment of Houston based community organizations (including the Houston Food Bank, Bread of Life, as well as several others) that provide much-needed help to her fellow Houstonians. She is also a Founder and past-President of the Brazoria chapter of the League of Women Voters, where she collaborated with the community to keep them informed and engaged in the voting process.

Houston is Dr. Letitia Plummer’s home.

It’s where she grew up. It’s where she  came back after college at Spelman and after she got her doctorate at  Baylor. It’s where she chose to raise her three boys. It’s where her  grandfather was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in Houston  and became the first African-American judge in Texas, and where her  father made a home with his Yemeni-born wife, became a dentist and  provided health care for the underserved (a practice that Letitia  continues today).

It’s also where she fights for a better  Houston every day, because fighting for progress is as Houston as  Letitia. Houston never quits… And neither does she.
