69 What My Mentor Told Me When I Felt Caged Inside My 9-5 ⎮ Interview With Brent Laffoon

Today I'm sharing a very special conversation I had with my mentor, Brent Laffoon, who helped me navigate through that feeling of being caged inside my 9-5. 

I just had this feeling that there was more for me out there but I wasn’t really sure how to go about it. Maybe you've felt the same?

Now, one thing is to learn what to do from a more strategic, business and career point of view, but a whole other thing is how to navigate the emotions and personal struggles that we face when we find ourselves feeling caged. 

Something that helped me tremendously was having a person like Brent to support me as I made my way through. 

Brent was my mentor and guide through this transition and he helped me understand that there are more ways to live life. You don’t necessarily have to stay in the corporate grind if you don’t want to or you can choose to stay and set up structures for yourself that make life feel more free, flexible and enjoyable.

Have you ever found yourself caught in the cycle of constantly telling people how busy you are?

    This week I’m sitting down for a chat with my wonderful student, Laura Tuomi. She is a recent business school graduate from Copenhagen Business School.

    In this interview Laura is going to share her story and I think many of you will be able to relate. We'll talk all about what it’s been like for her to move through a stressful education and manage all the responsibilities of job and private life on the side while trying to stay healthy and sane. 

    Laura has so many good inputs and perspectives and I’m just really excited for you to hear about how yoga has become such a pivotal part of her life and how she’s managing all her responsibilities today. She’s currently inside one of my programs, more specifically my private mentorship program, Free to Flourish, where we meet every week for a period of 3 months to build her confidence and get her up and running for the next chapter that she’s about to embark on - landing and starting her first full time job. 

    Laura has made such crazy moves and improvements since she joined this program. She’s going to tell you much more in the episode but truly what this comes down to is that I really believe to my core that you get to build your dream career and a life you love when you are in close proximity to someone who is already where you want to be. That has been true for me in the many mentorships I’ve invested in but it’s definitely also been true for Laura and her journey through Free to Flourish.

    This week I’m chatting to Lauren Kay, the founder of Legally Different and we are going to talk about all things human design and how this method can help you when you're at a crossroad in your career and wondering what to do next.

    Today, I talk to Whitney Harvey, the Principal of The Self Coached Lawyer, LLC, a company based out of the Phoenix, Arizona area. After successfully litigating for 12 years, she chose to step away from practicing law, focusing instead on helping lawyers thrive personally and professionally.

    We talk about the “lawyer identity” phenomenon. A lot of (aspiring) lawyers are “guilty” of this trend and it starts pretty early on in law school. As soon as we get drawn into the world of law, we start to identify as “law students” or “lawyers”. It becomes part of our identity and who we are quickly fades into the background as we begin to introduce ourselves as “law students” or “lawyers” to those around us. 

    In this episode we explore why this happens and what we can do to connect back to other areas of our personality and identity so we can zoom out and remind ourselves that we are so much more than lawyers (or whatever profession you are in). We have many other sides and identities to explore but sometimes it feels like we need to hide it when we go to work. So what can we do to merge all our different personality traits?     Last week I posted a reel on Instagram that seemed to resonate with a lot of people. In this piece of content I pointed out that a lot of people seem to be obsessed with letting everyone know how busy they are. Do you know this scenario? Someone comes up to you and asks you “How are you?” and your first instinct is to respond “Oh I’m fine, just super busy you know”.

    That’s why I thought it’d be great to dive a little deeper into this topic and so in today's episode I thought I'd bring awareness to this issue because most of us don’t even realize that we’re doing it. It is so ingrained for most of us and that's why I want to talk about how we can get conscious of it and start setting some healthy boundaries to protect our energy and mental health. Because guess what? You don't always need to be in a state of overdrive.

    In this class we will practice yin yoga and hold the postures for a longer period of time. We will mainly sit or lie down. We will move the spine in different directions: twists, side bends, forward folds and backbends and focus on self-compassion. The class includes breathwork (pranayama) and ends with a guided relaxation (shavasana).

    24 Yin Yoga To Calm Down After A Stressful Day

    In this class we will practice yin yoga and hold the postures for a longer period of time. We will mainly sit or lie down. We will work with the area around our hips and stretch the front, back and sides of the hips and thighs. The class includes breathwork (pranayama) and ends with a guided relaxation (shavasana).

    Level: Beginner

    Recommended Props: 2 blocks and a yoga belt. Useful, but not necessary. If you don’t have a yoga belt, you can use a scarf, towel or a normal belt.
