Manlihood ManCast

By Manlihood Mancast
Personal Development for Men Podcast by Manlihood.com

Manlihood... it’s a dying art.

Fathers pass it on to sons. And as fathers are less and less involved, young men know less and less about what it means to be a man.
We’re a bit tired of seeing sexist, chauvinist, drunken, frat-boys who have aged out, being representative of our role models.

So in 2013 Josh Hatcher decided to create a place where we can have the discussions that answer the question “What does it mean to be a man?”

Is there a link between gun violence and masculinity? | Manlihood ManCast with Josh Hatcher
There have been a glut of anti-gun and anti-man opinion articles written about a link between masculinity and gun violence. “Gun Culture” is often largely committed by men. In cases where someone is killed with a gun - statistically, they are more likely to be killed by a man. Does this mean there is a link? Is masculinity the problem? This Washington Post piece asks the question: Why is American masculinity at the center of gun culture, but not the gun debate? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjQqwrNQraA Maybe we should just BAN MEN! ------------------ Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Understanding the traits of masculinity | Manlihood ManCast with Josh Hatcher
What does it mean to be a man? What traits are associated with masculinity? Strength Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength. ~Arnold Schwarzenegger Courage It is courage, courage, courage, that raises the blood of life to crimson splendor. Live bravely and present a brave front to adversity. -Horace Independence A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself. ~ Axel Munthe Leadership Leadership is not Lordship. It’s service. It’s helping. It’s influence. Assertiveness To be assertive works best if not tied with arrogance. It’s okay to demand justice and truth. It’s okay to stand for what’s right. It’s okay to ask for a raise, or expect your family to obey you. This must be balanced with humility and integrity, or it’s just another jerk spouting off. Vision “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” Jonathan Swift “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” John Maxwell Integrity The root word of “integrity” is “integer” - which means “whole” If you have integrity - you are whole - not fractured by character flaws. Brotherhood Men are the best they can be when they are together. A better man has brothers in his life. A better man craves brotherhood, from which he not only benefits, but contributes. #TheCreativeMan - IF by Rudyard Kipling
Josh Hatcher reads the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling (‘Brother Square-Toes’—Rewards and Fairies) If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjg3_Cq1dB0 Set your mind on winning Mindset is everything. The most powerful force in your life. Set it on winning, and you’ll be a more powerful man. Work hard. Every Day. Nothing good comes free. You’ve got to earn it. If you want to be a more powerful man, you’ll have to earn that. So work hard. Grind at everything you do. Surround yourself with winners. They say you are the sum total of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Are you hanging otu with losers? Or are you surrounding yourself with powerful men that will teach you how to dominate? View Failure as your teacher. Everybody fails. Stop looking at it as the destination. It’s not wrong to fail. It’s wrong to not learn from your failure. Become a student of leadership. If you want to become a powerful man, you have to study leadership principles. It will do you no good to have power and have no clue how to use it. Serve people. This may seem counterintuitive, but the truth is - if we want to be great -- if we want to be a more powerful man and to dominate - our perspective can easily become warped. It’s about serving people. It’s about helping people. That is how you will gain influence, wealth, or whatever it is you seek. The true rewards though are not in position or power, but in relationships. Be disciplined If you want to be a more powerful man, you have to train. If you wanted to be able to lift more weights, you have to discipline your body and train it to be stronger. The same is true in every aspect of your life. Have integrity They say power corrupts. If you want to be a more powerful man, but you don’t have a foundation of integrity - it means nothing. And integrity in and of itself will help you build and grow your influence. Headstrong: How to be mentally strong | Manlihood ManCast with Josh Hatcher : a podcast for men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about the building the muscle of your mind. We hear a lot of talk about physical exercise and strength building. Which is good! But we need to talk about building up the mind, too. Garbage In / Garbage Out What we consume affects what we produce. Doing reps We need to use affirmations to build up and tone muscle. Repeat truth to yourself until you believe it. Powerlifting If you want to be headstrong, it takes time. You’ve got to keep working it over time. I can guarantee you, you are already stronger than you think you are. Discipline equals freedom. We think of discipline as uncomfortable - but you’ve got to TRAIN your brain how to think. It literally rewrites your brain chemistry! (Look up Dr. Caroline Leaf’s research on this!)  If you build healthy habits in the way you think, it really does set you free. But it takes discipline! Quotes from the Stoics | The Manlihood ManCast: a podcast for men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher shares some quotes from stoic philosophers.   Stoicism is an interesting philosophy that was popular in the Early Greek and Roman Empire. That philosophy has had resonance all throughout history. No manmade philosophy is perfect - so if you poke at it long enough, of course you’ll find something you disagree with.  There’s a bit of a resurgence in Stoic philosophy these days, almost in a counter to the more emotionally driven and amoral culture that has been stirred up these days. Stoic philosophy teaches the development of self control and fortitude to combat and overcome destructive emotions. You can see why that would resonate with some today, and be quite controversial with others. A Manlihood Christmas | The Manlihood ManCast with Josh Hatcher: a podcast for men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about the meaning of Christmas. The REAL meaning of Christmas - is that God loved you so much, that he sent his son to live among you. God himself chose to be a sweaty smelly human - a crying pooping baby - who would do great things, but would also suffer and die as a sacrifice for sin… God himself became sin - to pay for yours. ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ For more: http://joshhatcher.com  | http://manlihood.com Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? The Man in Red: Tales of Valor from the life of Saint Nicholas | Manlihood Mancast with Josh Hatcher: a podcast for men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about some of the manliest history about Saint Nicholas. Santa Claus may be shrouded in myth, but the real Man in Red was quite the manly man. According to history and legend, there are a number of stories that paint “Jolly Old Saint Nick” in a slightly different light than we see on the Christmas Cards. That Time Santa Claus hit a heretic in the face. That time he saved three daughters from being sold into prostitution That time he solved a grisly murder and did a miracle That time he told a storm at sea to take chill pill and it listened Nicholas wasn’t some soft fat guy sitting at the mall while a hundred kids made demands. He spoke with authority – so strongly that winds and waves shut the hell up at his request. Let’s strive for a little of that kind of authority in our lives! Speak boldly to the frightening circumstances in your life, and tell them to shut the hell up! In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher takes a look at what every dad really needs to know about Christmas. YOUR KIDS DON’T DESERVE ANYTHING A gift isn’t something you deserve. Don’t teach your kids to expect that they “deserve” anything. DON’T SPEND MORE THAN YOU MAKE Debt is dumb. Don’t rack up holiday debt. MEMORIES ARE MORE VALUABLE THAN GIFTS Make a point to build memories. Do something fun. Spend time together. TEACH THEM TO BE GRATEFUL Nothing is worse than a spoiled ungrateful child. Be Thankful In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about Thanksgiving, and the transforming power of gratitude. Thankfulness changes YOU. "Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation." -Brian Tracy Thankfulness changes OTHERS. "The way to develop the best that is in a person is by appreciation and encouragement." -Charles Schwab Gratitude is a cure-all. "We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction." -H.A. Ironside "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. Be more MANLY with THE V-WORD! - Manlihood ManCast - a podcast for men
The V Word: In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about a few different V Words that are important for men to understand. Some we need to embrace, some we need to reject. https://youtu.be/CixchbtGBjw Validation We all want validation. We all want someone to give us that validation or respect. But ultimately, we have to give it to ourselves. Vigilance We have to be ever vigilant, we need to be aware of what’s going on around us. Vigilant against threats internal and external. Vengeance Vengeance is destructive. We need to avoid this. Justice is good. Reconciliation is good. Vengeance is destructive. Victimhood We’re living in a time where being a victim is almost revered. Victory We all want to win. We want to be victorious. It’s good for us to run the race to win it. It’s good to celebrate the wins. Virtue The virtuous life is a life that is guided by principle. We do the right thing. Don’t virtue signal. Just have virtue. Don't Get Butthurt - How to be more emotionally resilient - Manlihood ManCast: A Podcast for Men
Don't get butthurt In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about avoiding the butthurt. How can we man-the-heck-up and face our circumstances without getting our feelings hurt? Resilience is when a man can bounce back after something hurts, rather than to stay down. Karma comes back to those who do wrong. Including you. Is this trouble your own fault? Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Learning to differentiate whether something SHOULD offend you or not will be one of the most valuable skills you acquire in life. Human Sacrifice: Blood and Guts Part 4: Manlihood ManCast Halloween Special - a podcast for men
In the movie Apocalypto, directed by Mel Gibson, a young Mayan man is set to be slaughtered. The Mayans believed that a bloody human sacrifice was required of their gods to bring favor on their land. After all – while the brutality was in practice, their kingdom thrived! In their brutal and twisted minds – it made sense! Of course we know that killing innocents as an act of sacrifice to the gods is not a good thing. But our culture is built on sacrifice – and I contend that it’s a cornerstone of manlihood for a man to be willing to lay down his life. When a man swears an oath to his country, as a soldier, a police officer, a firefighter, etc –  he pledges to serve the greater good at a great personal cost. In order for him to serve, his life may be required of him. They all know this – and yet they agree to serve. We may not all be heroes, signing or name in blood with an oath to serve and protect – but we should all strive to live our lives in a way that reflect some of that courage. Sometimes a commitment to sacrifice doesn’t mean death – sometimes it means going without to provide for our children. Sometimes it means doing the right thing, when it costs us dearly to do so. Sometimes it means standing up to defend against wrongdoing around us. Are you willing to give your life, or part of your life to the service of others? Are you willing to put yourself second, to put your needs behind the needs of others? Are you willing to charge in to danger to help another in need? https://www.manlihood.com/blood-guts-human-sacrifice/ ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ For more: http://joshhatcher.com  | http://manlihood.com Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Plucking Out Eyeballs: Blood and Guts Part 3 - Manlihood ManCast Halloween Special
The truth here is this… if we are committed to be better men – there are things we must stop doing. Mindsets we must change, behaviours we must modify. Some of those things are easy to stop- others take extreme action.  If you want to stop a behaviour, you need to do whatever it takes to stop it. Most people that want to quit drinking, for example, aren’t willing to pour all the booze in the house down the drain, aren’t willing to stop hanging out in social situations with drinking, and aren’t willing to get checked in and get professional help. So they often don’t stop drinking. Most people that want to stop looking at porn aren’t willing to change the way they use their computers, to install accountability software, to talk to their wife about it, or to sell their smartphone and get a flip phone. Most people who need to lose weight aren’t willing to stop eating pizza everyday, to put in countless hours of exercise, and to make drastic lifestyle changes. If we want to defeat our bad behaviour – we have to take extreme and drastic changes… the “plucking of the eyeballs” or the “cutting off of the hand.” https://www.manlihood.com/blood-and-guts-plucking-out-your-eyeballs/ ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ For more: http://joshhatcher.com  | http://manlihood.com Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Testicular Fortitude: Blood and Guts Part 2: Manlihood ManCast Halloween Special - a podcast for men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about some dark, creepy, and gross things. There’s light, even in the darkness! Testicular Fortitude https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_SDz982xHA Testicles are gross. When you really think about how they work, they’re awesome, and they are gross. All you have to do is imagine Anthony Bourdain as he travels around the world, and inevitably, someone will serve him a dish of testicles from some native species, and he always says, “It tastes like balls. They always taste the same.” We often describe someone with GUTS or GRIT as having “intestinal fortitude”- I like to joke that someone with BALLS has “testicular fortitude.” Let’s explore that. First of all, I’ve known women with more testicular fortitude than you can imagine – so I don’t mean to identify courage, strength, and honor solely with masculine specific parts, but I want to emphasize that there should be a correlation to having ACTUAL testicles and having BALLS.https://www.manlihood.com/blood-and-guts-testicular-fortitude/ ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ For more: http://joshhatcher.com  | http://manlihood.com Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Manlihood Halloween Special: Blood and Guts Part 1
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about some dark, creepy, and gross things. There’s light, even in the darkness! https://youtu.be/2MEbifpA7l4 What Flows in your veins Blood has been thought of as sacred since the first moment someone nicked their finger and saw the dark red fluid flow out of it. It carries life – and has inspired mythology, religion, folklore, and storytellers to view it as a mystical and powerful force. Your heart pumps blood through your veins – and it moves all through your body. Let’s use this metaphor to ask a couple of personal development questions, men. We often call our emotional center our “heart.” And if the physical heart pumps blood through your veins – what is the emotional force that the figurative heart pumps through your veins? PASSION. So for the sake of analogy – think of PASSION as BLOOD. In every man, there is a passion that drive him. Even the tired and weak man has that passion pumping through him – though he may have a weak pulse, or low blood pressure. But the best men are those that have harnessed and trained their body to work with their flowing passion to get things accomplished. What are you passionate about? What drives you? What passion flows in your veins? Take some time to identify the things you are passionate about. Then find a way to embrace and strengthen and train yourself – like an athlete – a finely tuned machine to use them to the best of your ability. https://www.manlihood.com/blood-and-guts-what-flows-in-your-veins/ ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ For more: http://joshhatcher.com  | http://manlihood.com Join the ManCave Today:  http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Brothers in Arms: How your relationship with other men can make you a better man - Manlihood ManCast - a Podcast for Men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about the value of brotherhood, and what it means to fight the good fight together. Life is like a fight. We have to fight against hardship, fight against apathy, fight to earn a living, to succeed, to lead our families well. This is war. The enemy isn’t other people - it’s mindsets that hold us back, it’s attitudes and behaviours in ourselves we have to change. And we’re not alone in this battle. We are meant to fight it as a brotherhood. How do we fight as brothers in arms? Wisdom from Teddy Roosevelt | Manlihood ManCast: a Podcast for Men
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher shares some quotes from Theodore Roosevelt, perhaps the manliest U.S. President of all time. https://youtu.be/_frwOyRgBkM “A man’s usefulness depends upon his living up to his ideals insofar as he can.” “All daring and courage, all iron endurance of misfortune-make for a finer, nobler type of manhood.” “Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life.” “A soft, easy life is not worth living, if it impairs the fibre of brain and heart and muscle. We must dare to be great; and we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage… For us is the life of action, of strenuous performance of duty; let us live in the harness, striving mightily; let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out.” ---------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ Join the ManCave Today: http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Nobility is a Choice - Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast - A Podcast for Men
Nobility is a choice Josh Hatcher from Manlihood.com talks about Nobility on today’s episode of the Manlihood ManCast. https://youtu.be/oEwQQfO3-6g Nobility used to refer to an upper class - often blood related to royalty, or wealthy landowners. Often, their nobility was in rank and class, and not in virtue. Today, nobility refers to character more than rank or status. You can be Jack W. Dirt from the East Side of the Wankbottom Trailerpark in Fartblossom Kansas - but if you’ve got good character, you’re a noble. It’s a choice you make. Folks with good character are known for it. Things Men Don't Want to Talk About: The Past
In this installment of a five part series titled “Things Men Don’t Want to Talk About”  for the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about the past. https://youtu.be/puEqBC-nepE This can be related to last week’s episode about sexual abuse - or even about other kinds of abuse - but it’s not just that. All of us have a past. Our own mistakes, our own flaws, or hard things we’ve had to endure. It’s hard for us to look back there. Men are fixers. We want to focus on what we can change. It doesn’t help to look at things we can’t change. I know that if I look at my own past, I’ve got a lot of mistakes that I’ve made that I regret. A lot of people I’ve hurt, stupid things I’ve said or did… Sometimes, when I try to fall asleep at night, all of those things come back to haunt me. I have an auditory memory. So I can replay conversations I had in my head from ten years ago. And I hear all the stupid things I said, and I feel like a jerk. No. I don’t want to talk about the past. I don’t want to talk about what I did - or what others did. I can’t change it. I can’t fix it. I want to focus on today. I want to focus on the future. I can change those. I can influence those. I can fix those. We can’t change the past - but if we just refuse to talk about it - we’re going to make the same mistakes. Our failures, and our wounds from the past have a great sway on the decisions we make. Like a weight on a chain behind us. We take it with us - all the while trying to pretend it didn’t happen. You’ve got to deal with your past. You’ve got to make amends, be honest, get to the root of why we think and react the way we do if we intend to make a better future for ourselves. Things Men Don't Want to Talk about: Domestic Violence | Manlihood ManCast
In this installment of a five part series titled “Things Men Don’t Want to Talk About”  for the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about Domestic Violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON2lfVMnIP8 There are two kinds of domestic violence I’d like to address. Neither of them get talked about much. Men abusing women and/or children.  This is unacceptable. If you’re caught in a cycle of this, you need to get help. Not talking about it is making you a monster. Because that’s who abuses women and children - monsters. You’re not a man, you’re a beast, or a little boy with beer muscles. Get help. Men abused by women. There’s got to be a tremendous amount of shame involved with this. Despite the fact that our culture has completely upended gender roles, there’s still a prevailing mindset, that a man is strong and that he is stronger than she is.  We also teach boys that it’s always wrong to hit a woman. So a man is actually trained to be susceptible to abuse because he’s trained not to fight back. If you’re being abused, get out. Get safe.  Don’t be a victim.  You don’t HAVE to talk about it with anybody you don’t want to talk about it with. But you do have to talk to someone to make sure it stops happening. Things Men don't want to talk about: Sexual Abuse
In this installment of a five part series titled “Things Men Don’t Want to Talk About”  for the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about sexual abuse.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsDenN8bhy0 Here’s some information on male sexual abuse from 1in6.org A 2005 study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, on San Diego Kaiser Permanente HMO members, reported that 16% of males were sexually abused by the age of 18.1 A 2003 national study of U.S. adults reported that 14.2% of men were sexually abused before the age of 18.2 A 1998 study reviewing research on male childhood sexual abuse concluded that the problems is “common, under-reported, under-recognized, and under-treated.”3 A 1996 study of male university students in the Boston area reported that 18% of men were sexually abused before the age of 16.4 A 1990 national study of U.S. adults reported that 16% of men were sexually abused before the age of 18.5 That 1 in 6 statistic is based on reported, documented cases. There is a lot of reason to believe that the number is higher. Men who have experienced sexual abuse in their past are very likely to experience these issues: Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Alcoholism and drug abuse. Suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. Problems in intimate relationships. Underachievement at school and at work. Bottom line is - Men don’t like to talk about it. But maybe we should. Maybe not out in the open in front of everybody, if that makes you  uncomfortable - but find someone you can trust and talk about it. See a counselor if you’ve found yourself struggling with depression, or ptsd, or suicidal thoughts.  You are not alone ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE  http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ Join the ManCave Today:   http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Things Men Don't Want to Talk About: Porn and Masturbation | Manlihood ManCast
Things Men Don't Want to Talk About: Pornography and Masturbation In this installment of a five part series titled “Things Men Don’t Want to Talk About”  for the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about Pornography and Masturbation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x1Ytt0qFQE Men don’t want to talk about what they do when no one is looking. For a few reasons. One reason, we don’t want anyone to tell us we shouldn’t do it…. Or… we don’t want anyone to know we do it. Masturbation takes away from our power. It may seem like a release, or like a biological way to “clear the pipes.” But it’s not that. It actually decreases desire, and can create a situation where you are training yourself to the fastest way possible to orgasm. This is the opposite of what you need in the bedroom with your spouse.   Porn is harmful to men. It’s impact on the brain, impact on the emotions and addictive nature is never satisfied.  Porn is harmful to women.  It teaches men to devalue women, to degrade women. Porn is a nasty downward spiral of degradation toward women. That’s not was sex is meant to be. It’s also harmful because the industry is SATURATED with human trafficking, including underage girls. You may think you’re watching porn that is consensual, but when you hear the horror stories of how women have been enslaved and are doing it because they have no other choice… it will make you sick. Someone’s daughter was drugged up, tortured, threatened, and forced to make that porn. I was addicted to porn. It almost destroyed my marriage. It was not an easy fight. I would try to justify it or explain it away, but the truth is, I was  neglecting my wife and pleasing myself. I was gratifying my own desires - and it lead me to a dark place. It would have gone darker if I had continued.  If you want to look at facts, numbers, statistics, stories, of what porn is and what it does - check out FIGHTTHENEWDRUG.COM ----------- Get REIGNITE:  A MAN’S FIELD GUIDE TO TAKING BACK HIS LIFE  http://www.manlihood.com/reignite/ Join the ManCave Today:   http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave ---------------- Do you have a question you'd like to have answered on The Manlihood ManCast? Things Men Don't Want to Talk About: Our Feelings - Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
Things Men Don't Want to Talk About: Our Feelings In this installment of a five part series titled “Things Men Don’t Want to Talk About” for the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about the way men don’t like to talk about their feelings. https://youtu.be/SBorfu0MRIc Dr. Amanda Rose of the University of Missouri did a survey of 2000 school aged boys and girls to explore feelings. "For years, popular psychologists have insisted boys and men would like to talk about their problems, but are held back by fears of embarrassment or appearing weak. However, when we asked young people how talking about their problems would make them feel, boys didn't express angst or distress about discussing problems any more than girls. Instead, boys' responses suggest they just don't see talking about problems to be a particularly useful activity." The reason men don’t like to talk about these things is not because of a deep shame or a fear of opening up. We don’t talk about our feelings generally, because we don’t see the point. There is a time and place to talk about how we feel. As men, we do tend to compartmentalize and shove emotion aside in order to function. That CAN backfire. We need to properly process our feelings. We may need to talk about it. There IS a point. But it’s not THE point. Cancel Culture is a Crock - Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
Cancel Culture is a Crock In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about Cancel Culture, and why we need to reevaluate our current culture of outrage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg39KfPIqoE There are things worth outrage. I have a right to freedom of speech. That includes what speech I’ll tolerate on my platform. Pointing fingers at someone we disagree with, calling or boycotts, calling to shut people up, demanding that people be silenced, is not going to change anyone’s mind. Freedom of speech has responsibilities. The simplest solution to speech that offends you is to walk away or turn it off. The REAL American Dream - Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood.com talks about the American Dream, and what it is we all want from our country. https://youtu.be/YuqA1IK95vE In this time of political upheaval and division, it seems wise to look back at what it is we all want… what it is we all can agree on. The American Dream is pretty simple. We haven’t always got it right. We’ve often got it wrong. But ultimately - we all want the same things. To have the opportunity to work to earn a living to provide for ourselves and our families. To have the opportunity to advance our station. To be able to enjoy our freedoms and to be left alone while we do it. Where we get it wrong is when we try to take these things from people for one reason or another. Who am I and what do I stand for? An Interview with Robbie Sondag | Manlihood ManCast
Josh Hatcher of Manlihood talks to Robbie Sondag of Manly Moments about what it means to be a man.   After losing his own father at age 18, he entered young adulthood, like many young males do - guessing at what it means to be a man.  After committing his life to Christ and searching Scripture, he came to a clearer understanding of what it means to be a real man. He made a commitment to help other man find answers to the questions they would normally ask their fathers.   More from Robbie Sondag: Manly Moments Website: https://www.manlymoments.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-3j5ryHBXhSClB1dk1L0cQ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/manly_moments/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Manly-Moments-with-Robbie-Sondag-1580497768640336/   More from Josh Hatcher: http://joshhatcher.com   More from Manlihood: Manlihood: Personal Development for Men: http://manlihood.com Facebook: http://facebook.com/manlihood Instagram: http://instagram.com/manlihood Twitter: http://twitter.com/manlihooddotcom   JOIN THE MANLIHOOD MANCAVE to connect with other men who build each other up! http://facebook.com/groups/manlihoodmancave   --------------- VISIT THE MANLIHOOD STORE FOR RESOURCES, APPAREL, AND MORE! http://manlihood.com/store --------------   Don't forget to check out our sponsors / partners / affiliates:   Hatcher Media - http://hatchermedia.net   Honky EDC - http://honkyedc.com   GET A FREE STOCK FOR JOINING ROBINHOOD - https://join.robinhood.com/joshh826   Out of Your Shell Poetry - http://outofyourshellpoetry.com

The Darkest Night MMC78 | The Manlihood ManCast with Josh Hatcher
Stay safe. Be smart. Be prepared. We are in uncertain times. And these times are causing many to lose hope. While this episode is being recorded - we’re in the middle of a global pandemic - if you’re listening this well into the future - which happens a lot with podcasts - you’ll know that we survived this. And that it wasn’t the end of the world. So i want to speak not only to the moment that we’re in - but to all moments that are dark. All times that are hard. “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise”-Victor Hugo Sometimes - this dark hour is just going to get better. Sometimes - you might have to drag that sun up over the horizon yourself… well.. You can’t do that - but you can turn on a light. And in our Ask a Man Segment: My dad left before i was born. he tried to be involved for a little while, but then just disappeared out my life. i hated him for years, and now i'm over it. I don't even care enough to hate him. But i just found out my fiance is pregnant, which means i'm going to be a dad. I am scared to death of this. I don't know what a dad is supposed to be. WELCOME TO #CREATIVETHURSDAY! MANLIHOOD IS ABOUT PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR MEN. Every Thursday, we feature and highlight one part of masculinity that is often pushed to the side – creativity! This week, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood and Out of Your Shell Poetry will read “An Eclipse is Only Perspective” from “When Sea Billows Roll” available on Amazon today! AN ECLIPSE IS ONLY PERSPECTIVE From “When Sea Billows Roll” Available at Amazon Today! She was a beauty. An Eclipse Is Only Perspective When the moon, white as bone, Passes in front of the sun. The earth is shrouded for a moment. Still. Quiet. And mesmerized. Only the sun’s fiery crown lights up the edge of the sky. Prophets cry out. Scientists scribble notes. It’s an omen! It’s science! Yellow fire turns black. The bone white moon turns black. And wisps of sun fire glow almost green or blue. Perspective really is everything. She can block out the sun. She can inspire poets to dance,   wise men to wonder, children to blind themselves to get a once in a lifetime glimpse. And a day’s journey away – the moon passes over, and no one even notices. The world isn’t ending. The sun doesn’t go dark. No one is on their manicured lawns staring at the sky through goggles. From their perspective, nothing changes. No bone white moon. No fiery crown. No blackened sky. From “When Sea Billows Roll” Available at Amazon Today!

Ancient and upcycled old saw mill. I have no idea what was original, and what has been replaced and hobbled. The antique yellow engine, half the age of the rest sputtered and coughed up diesel, spinning her belt. The old sawn boards, greyed and cragged by the sun - cracks filled with white pine sawdust. The old steel, tracks and carriage were black, with orange crust creeping at the edges. We kept it and the massive blade covered with rubber tarps, but moisture always found a way in…. Just enough to leave a little crust, not enough to eat it away. My job was to clean the bark with an old crowbar. The bath in the deep millpond usually did it’s trick. The bark would shed like t-shirt… mostly in one piece. We spun the log on the carriage, Old Man Bill and I. I’d dodge his occasional curses as she played with him. She’d taunt and tease. After all, she was much older than Old Man Bill. And I’d stand on the backside of the blade, guiding the timbers over the rollers to the forklift. On a hot day, she would reward me, coating me with wet sawdust and millpond spray. Oh, the smell of white pine and pond water and diesel was the best summer. And at the end of the day, the spring that fed the millpond would give me a drink. I’d stick my whole face into the hole in the ground and suck the water in. Drowning just long enough to cool my hot tongue. Get "Sweat, Sawdust, and the Millpond" by Josh Hatcher here

MMC 72 - Why "Man Up" isn't a bad thing
In this episode, Josh Hatcher tackles the phrase "Man Up!" It's become almost taboo to say it, in light of a cultural shift that draws a lot of attention to Toxic Masculinity. In the Ask - A - Man segment, Josh answers this question: How do we (men and women) take back the ground that we've surrendered, especially in education, media and politics?  Invictus William Ernest Henley - 1849-1903 Out of the night that covers me,      Black as the Pit from pole to pole,    I thank whatever gods may be      For my unconquerable soul.    In the fell clutch of circumstance    I have not winced nor cried aloud.    Under the bludgeonings of chance      My head is bloody, but unbowed.    Beyond this place of wrath and tears      Looms but the Horror of the shade,  And yet the menace of the years      Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.    It matters not how strait the gate,      How charged with punishments the scroll,    I am the master of my fate:   I am the captain of my soul. ------------------------------- Want to weigh in? MMC 65 - Relationship Tips to Save You Heartache - Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher tells us 5 relationships tips to save you a world of heartache. Quick relationship tips that will save you a world of heartache. 1. She is not your whole world.  I know we like to say that because it sounds poetic, and it kind of feels like it. But don't let her be your whole world. Make sure you have some good friends, and that you MAINTAIN those friendships (particularly with other men who build you up). Make sure you have some things that you can do without her. If you wrap your whole identity around her, you're going to be in trouble if you encounter any problems. 2. You will have problems.  You're either committed to work through them, or you are not. Make up your mind on the matter now. 3. Each of you is sovereign  Even though there is certainly an element of "submission" to each other involved in marriage - she submits to you - you lay down your life for her (just read ephesians) -- it's especially important to understand that each of you is sovereign. She has a right to her feelings and frustrations, as much as you do. You can't get butthurt if she sees things from a different perspective, or if she prefers miracle whip to mayo. (I know - that's probably a dealbreaker) Recognizing and acknowledging her sovereignty, as well as your own will allow you both to understand your value. 4. She doesn't owe you anything.  You bought her dinner? She doesn't have to sleep with you. You went to work for 16 hours? She doesn't OWE you clean dishes. YES. It's helpful for you to have arrangements and clear expectations of each other. But don't think for a minute that love is transactional. You can't purchase or earn affection. No one is indebted to give love to the other. Love is given as a free gift, or it's not love at all. 5. You teach people how you want them to treat you. If you tolerate disrespect, and if you give disrespect, you'll get disrespect. You must set clear expectations of the behavior and communication you want to receive from them, and patiently correct them when they deliver something different.  Complaining, insults, intentionally hurtful words create a spiraling effect. One of you offers them up, the other retaliates. Don't expect her to show respect if you don't. And if she doesn't - rather than retaliate- calmly correct it and get to the root of why she's feeling that way. Do it humbly. You very well might be the root of it. You don't have to tolerate verbally abusive and hurtful language. But if there are patterns established, it will take patience to change those patterns. Want to weigh in? Rise X Up 6: D-Day - Josh Hatcher
75 years ago, 73,000 American heroes prepared to change the world. Loaded down with 100 pounds of gear and ammo, soldiers were dumped on the shore of France, sprayed with salt water and German lead. In the chaos, thousands of Allied troops fell. It wasn’t one of those victories that felt good. It was a sacrifice made for a greater good-- knocking out a genocidal tyrant with a massive army bent on world domination. D-Day wasn’t the end of the war. It wasn’t the day that brought ticker-tape parades and sailors kissing nurses in the streets. Rather, it was a battle that turned the tide of the war. Up until that day, a world controlled by Nazis was a very real possibility. D-Day means “Decision Day.” The battle at Normandy marked the day of decisive victory in World War II. Before the battle, General Dwight D Eisenhower remarked, “This operation is not being planned with any alternatives. This operation is planned as a victory, and that's the way it's going to be. We're going down there, and we're throwing everything we have into it, and we're going to make it a success."  As we celebrate this anniversary, I want to salute the heroism of the men who risked and gave it all that day to secure liberty for us all. D-Day has another significance for me personally. Read the full posts here: D-Day My Own Personal D-Day ----------------------------------------- Want to weigh in? Rise X Up 5 : Breaking Chains - Josh Hatcher
My little brother had a really awesome toy when we were kids. MY PET MONSTER. It was almost as big as he was, covered in blue fur, with glow in the dark teeth and a big warty nose. He came with an awesome accessory – a set of rubber shackles with a plastic chain between them. There was a false link in the middle, that would pop loose with a little force. We would play cops and robbers, and take turns being arrested. Then, we’d “hulk out” and break off the shackles and run away. YOU’LL NEVER CATCH ME, COPPER!

“The soil of a man’s heart is stonier; a man grows what he can and tends it.” Jud Crandall - Stephen King’s Pet Sematary Growing up like most kids in the 80s and 90s,  I had an obsession with Stephen King. MMC 63 - We've All Got Scars | Manlihood ManCast - Podcoin
In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher talks about SCARS. We've all got scars. Words that were said to you when you were young... Things you saw that you should never have seen... Lifelong consequences from stupid decisions, whether ours or someone else's... Men, make sure that they are SCARS not WOUNDS. If you keep finding that you are sensitive about certain things, held back by the same unreasonable fears, or that you keep making the same bad decisions repeatedly, or that you have habits you just can't quit.... chances are good that you have a wound that never healed right. It's not a scar, it's a wound or an infection. Get it cleaned out and get it healed. If that means you need to get some professional help, to talk to a trusted friend about it, or whatever - the only person that can make the decision to get that part of your life healed is you. A scar shows you've been through the process. An overly sensitive attitude, a destructive habit, a fearful mindset just show that you have a wound you need to work on. In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher tells us why he doesn’t want you to follow him. Who do you think you are? How can a fat guy making peanuts tell me how to live my life? Why should I take advice from the guy that doesn't look or act nearly as manly as I do? That Hatcher guy isn't manly at all! What gives him the right to say that? I think about these kinds of questions a lot. Fortunately - none of you mutter them out loud... though I'm sure those questions may occasionally bounce around in your heads. I'm not here to tell you how to be rich. I'm not here to tell you how to be healthy. I'm not here to tell you how to do anything from a position of superiority. --- Want to weigh in? In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher says you have to deal with your crap, and tells you how he dealt with his. Deal with your crap. A while back,  I had to deal with a sewer problem. Digging out a trench to move the crap so I could get to the pipe. I was covered in crap. I took a shower and got out and while drying off, I still smelled crap. It was gross. And I had to hop back in the shower again. I went to a funeral for an old friend  afew . He had a lot of pain. A lot of crap.He choose to numb that pain by drinking and drugging until his liver quit. Through his addiction, he pushed his family away and hurt them. I saw their grief as they choose to forgive him and to say goodbye. He didn't deal with his crap. So... I don't what kind of crap you guys are dealing with in your life... MMC 59 | The Blame Game | Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
“If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month.”  ― Theodore Roosevelt Stop playing the blame game. Replace it with taking responsibility The buck stops here. You are the only one who can change you. And you are the only one you can change. As a man you are a leader - that means even more responsibility. "any team, in any organization, all responsibility for success and failure rests with the leader. The leader must own everything in his or her world. There is no one else to blame. The leader must acknowledge mistakes and admit failures, take ownership of them, and develop a plan to win."  — Jocko Willink (Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win) "Implementing Extreme Ownership requires checking your ego and operating with a high degree of humility. Admitting mistakes, taking ownership, and developing a plan to overcome challenges are integral to any successful team."  — Jocko Willink (Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win)

MMC 57 | Understanding Gentlemen | Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
What it means to be a gentleman The word gentleman has more connotations than it does definitions. It is important to clearly define what it means to be a gentleman, and to rid our minds of the mixed up messages we have often attached to the word. I remember as a boy, well-meaning women teachers would use the word “gentlemen” to try to convince a class full of rowdy boys to sit still and be quiet. Some boys, enthralled by the compliment of being referred to as “men” compiled. Most boys, offended at being called “gentle” didn’t comply. I was often in the second category. The word also conjures a cartoonish picture of a gentlemen of the Victorian era, in suit and bow tie, with a monocle and his hair parted in the middle. He is not Popeye, Fred Flintstone or Yosemite Sam. He isn’t heroic or strong. He responds to tough circumstances with fear, or at best, really bad boxing form. To this caricature, being gentle means being week. To be a gentleman is not about being proper or mannered, or pedigreed or less likely to fight. To be a gentlemen means to have honor… we give things and people the proper value, and treat them in a way that shows honor to their value. That means showing courtesy and politeness when it matters. That means showing respect where it is due. That means treating people with kindness, and in some cases tenderness. It also means defending that honor when sometime shows dishonor.  To be a gentleman is a choice to live in a way that shows honor, and return then deserves honor. ----------------- Want to weigh in? In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher talks about the question of WHEN. It’s really a question of when. When to be vulnerable / when to be tough. If you’ve listened to my other podcasts, you know I’m not a fan of the word vulnerable. I prefer authenticity. But that’s another episode, and you can go listen to it yourself. For the sake of clarity - let’s use the use the word vulnerable. When should you be vulnerable, and show your weaknesses, and how does that contrast to when you should steel your resolve and show your strength? I think it’s important to have a trusted circle of people who see and know your struggles and your vulnerabilities. Even men need a friend they can cry with on a very rare occasion. You don’t have to trust EVERYBODY. But you should be working on building the kind of relationships that support your vulnerabilities.  Think about a Danish Shield Wall on the battlefield. They’re all pretty exposed from behind, but they work together to fend off attackers. Sometimes, you have to suck it up. You have to put the emotion and the weakness on the shelf, and face the battles head on. Want to weigh in? MMC 49 | No More Mr. Nice Guy | Josh Hatcher | Manlihood ManCast
In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher talks about the difference between Nice and Kind. There is a difference between being "nice" and being "kind." I'd rather be "kind" than be "nice." Kindness is intentional and outward. It takes courage to be kind. It takes action and it doesn't always do what everyone else wants. Niceness is passive, and receptive. It doesn't take effort, and it doesn't require action. It doesn't rock the boat. They may seem like subtle differences, but the mindset between being "nice" and being "kind" are very different. People frequently describe me as a “nice guy.” But I don’t think they understand the difference. You don’t have to be a pushover. You don’t have to keep your mouth shut when someone needs to hear the truth. You don’t have to always be agreeable and compliant. It’s okay to stand up for yourself, and others. It’s okay to fight for what’s right. It’s also okay to treat people with kindness, and respect, and to go out of your way to smile and show love to people. This does not indicate weakness, or submission. Finding this balance, I believe is the key that unlocks many many things. --- Want to weigh in? MMC 50 | Wild | Josh Hatcher | The Manlihood Mancast
More at Manlihood.com In this episode of the Manlihood Mancast, Josh Hatcher talks about what it means to be WILD. To be wild, to hear the heartbeat of nature, to feel the rush of adrenal strength, to drink from the fresh air and howl at the moon – these are things that are embedded into men. The Call Men are wild, mighty, and fierce. Yet our culture wraps silky ropes around our necks, and shaves our faces, and trims our nails. The wildman isn’t quite socially acceptable. It’s not okay to have dirt under your fingernails, or to kill your own dinner. We don’t have to reject civilization entirely, there is a time and a place for manners and polite conversation and neckties and cologne. But I believe that all men, even the dandier, fluffier ones, have a call – drums beating in the distance – that beckons them into the wild. “But especially he loved to run in the dim twilight of the summer midnights, listening to the subdued and sleepy murmurs of the forest, reading signs and sounds as a man may read a book, and seeking for the mysterious something that called — called, waking or sleeping, at all times, for him to come.” ― Jack London, The Call of the Wild Fury. Sometimes, yes. Wild fury and righteous anger stirs up in the hearts of men. Driving them to action, to battle, to fight. Hopefully, it’s tempered with the code, with the order. Fury must be kept in check, and be used to propel justice, to free the oppressed, to protect. Tests of Strength. From the time boys are young, they enter contests, either alone or with their brothers, and their fathers – to see how strong they are. Wrestling, weightlifting, arm-wrestling, “bloody knuckles,” Chinese hot-hands, even thumb wrestling. This wild behavior may seem reminiscent of goats butting their heads against each other, or bears mawing at each other’s necks…. But it’s a part of who we are. We don’t necessarily outgrow it. And that rough and tumble tug-of-war helps shape us, helps bond us together, and helps remind us who we want on our side if there is a time to fight. The call of the wild pushes men to success. It drives men to be refreshed in nature. As long as we wrap it up in silk and lace and soap, it will still be there. “He was mastered by the sheer surging of life, the tidal wave of being, the perfect joy of each separate muscle, joint, and sinew in that it was everything that was not death, that it was aglow and rampant, expressing itself in movement, flying exultantly under the stars.” ― Jack London, The Call of the Wild “There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. This ecstasy, this forgetfulness of living, comes to the artist, caught up and out of himself in a sheet of flame; it comes to the soldier, war-mad in a stricken field and refusing quarter; and it came to Buck, leading the pack, sounding the old wolf-cry, straining after the food that was alive and that fled swiftly before him through the moonlight.” ― Jack London, The Call of the Wild The Fire Something else that we’ve lost when our culture became civilized and pushed out the wild men – the fire. Today, we gather around the television and let people tell us stories, with the imagination already painted for us. Or we pretend to gather in virtual communities – typing with our thumbs and sending each other cat videos and poop emojis. But in the WILD – men gathered around a fire at the end of the evening. The fire cooked the food from the hunt. It kept the predators away. It kept the tribe warm. But more importantly than that, it united them. It gave them communion with each other, with the stories of their ancestors. They laughed, sang, and told stories while the little ones fell asleep in daddy’s lap. Generations later, we brought the fire from the outside to the inside, in stone hearths. Our tribes

MMC 47 - Validation - The Manlihood ManCast
Josh read the poem "Validation" and talks about what it means to seek validation and honor from external sources versus an internal source. Validation Young man. Old man. Listen. You want validation. To have a rubber stamp on your forehead to confirm what you think is true. Ink on paper, in your skin. Knowing nods. Framed sheepskin. Lifted pickups. Listen, son. Listen. No man is an island. No man is a rock. I understand you want the whole to acknowledge you. To recognize you. To give you honor, even in the slightest. But no man can give you What must come from you. Father's fears cut deep. Mother's tears burn hot. Family ties that bind can be a blessing, or can hang heavy like a millstone. To the depths. To the depths. Listen, son. I'll tell you what you need to hear. Even if it is not what you want to hear. No words can impart what your own lips are due. Honor is sometimes bestowed upon a man. Like an olive wreath, a medal pinned chest-high, A “good job” or “atta-boy” thrown in for good measure. But that honor is cheap. Those who have received it know its worth. Often those with a shoulder pat, or a trophy case know the truth. The trinkets, the shiny silver badges, the lipstick marks on their cheek, are not the honor itself. Son. Your honor, your validation flows from a spring inside you. It bubbles over, born in determination… building pressure from discipline.. By the time it even sees sky, enough to glint in the sun and catch an eye, it has been guided along underground tunnels of consistency and persistence. Then, it flows out. Gets noticed. Gets recognized. “I just want someone to notice… to tell me I am what I am.” Son. Maybe you are not who you are, yet. All I can say is that if you want honor, you must recognize its source is in you. Clear the muddied well. Clean the paths of discipline. And do not stop. Say it. Out loud. So that your own ears can hear. “I am a man. I am enough. I am good. I will train myself. I will persist. I will be a victor.” Son. That is all the validation that you need.

MMC 45- Lion or Lamb - Part 4 - How and When to Follow - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 45: Lion or Lamb - Part 4 - How and When to Follow We’ve often been told that men need to be the alpha. And this of course, relates to the idea that we need to be the most aggressive wolf (or lion) in the pack (or pride). They tell us to show now mercy, to build and demonstrate strength. To strive to lead at all costs. I don’t buy into the whole “alpha male” nonsense. What are we, animals? No. We are men! And men come in different strokes and sizes. If the whole pack of wolves was alpha… You know the pack would die right? There are different roles in the pack. And we are supposed to be better then the animals…. And they already know that everyone can’t be alpha! Sometimes, we need to live aggressively. Sometimes we need to lead the pack. But sometimes, we need to follow, to obey, to submit. To show compassion, to show mercy, to show love. Honestly, I think what we need more on this planet is more men that know when to lead, and when to follow. I think what we need in this world are men who don’t think of themselves higher than they are. Men who have the strength to fight and conquer, but the self-control to know when not to. Men who know when to lead and when to follow. http://www.manlihood.com/lion-or-lamb-how-and-when-to-follow/

MMC 44 - Lion or Lamb- Part 3 - Gentleman Doesn’t Mean Pansy - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 44: Lion or Lamb: Part 3 - Gentleman Doesn’t Mean Pansy The word PANSY is often used to describe a weak man - but let’s make sure not to equate that title with the title of gentleman. My grandmother always told me that a pansy was actually a tough flower. It could stand against the cold, and grow in pretty adverse conditions… it still though has a reputation for being “girly” – and the flower’s name has been embedded culturally to imply weakness or a lack of masculinity. This civility does not erase the wild, passionate strength that lies in a man’s heart. A gentleman can hold his own in a bout of fisticuffs or fencing. He can heft a child on to his shoulders, pick up his bride to carry her over the threshhold, and defend the tender things he holds dear with ferocity and strength. My thoughts on this are two-fold. 1. Just because you wear a tie to work, or drive a minivan, or eat kale – does not exempt you from the wilder side of manhood. Make sure that you know how to defend yourself and the things and people you love. Make sure you keep your physical body strong and ready to perform. 2. Inversely, just because you are a strong and brave, do not neglect the tender touches needed in civilized life. Say Please and Thank you. Snuggle with your children. Read poetry. These things do not affect your ability to be manly. In fact, I believe they enhance them. http://www.manlihood.com/lion-or-lamb-gentleman-doesnt-mean-pansy/

MMC 43- Lion or Lamb- Part 2 - Embracing Your Lionhood - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 43: Lion or Lamb: Part 2 - Embracing Your Lionhood - Manlihood ManCast “Truth be told, most of us are faking our way through life. We pick only those battles we are sure to win, only those adventures we are sure to handle, only those beauties we are sure to rescue.” ― John Eldredge, Wild at Heart Revised and Updated: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s For the last century – the idea of manhood has been unappealing. To be strong, courageous, willing to fight, the smell of hard work, the hair on our face and bodies- it’s all been painted as slobbish, beastly, and uncivilized. Not to downplay or insult the contributions of women, but fighting, working, and rough men have built our civilization. Now that it’s built, and civilization lies comfortably on memory foam beds drinking foamy coffee drinks, we have invented a derision against the wild, raw, strength of man. As a man who is truly a lion, your strength must be tempered, disciplined, and reserved. Let them feel the weight of who you are. Walk into a room with confidence, and they’ll see your strength and your wildness, and know they don’t want to mess with that. When they see your gentleness, kindness, and temperament, they’ll respect it more, knowing the strength behind it. Have you ever met that young soldier who comes back from bootcamp to visit with his family? He is lean, strong, fierce, and ready for battle. But there’s this sense of self-confidence and self-control about him. He went away a boy, and he came home a man. He’s been trained in hand-to-hand combat, and in peak-physical condition. But he looks you in the eye, he shakes your hand firmly, and stands up straight. That lion is there. He’s not a “tame lion” – but he’s a good one. http://www.manlihood.com/lion-or-lamb-embracing-your-lionhood/

MMC 42- Episode 42- Lion or a Lamb - Part 1 - Finding Balance - The Manlihood ManCast
Episode 42: Lion or a Lamb - Part 1 - Finding Balance We’ve long said that March comes in and goes out inversely like a Lion or a Lamb. The thought of being one or the other may be a bit frightening for men. Especially in a culture that no longer appreciates the fierce and bold virtues that once marked manhood. Lambs are weak. Lions are strong. Most of the time, I think we should err on the side of the lion. I think that we should strive to be brave, and fierce. We should strive to lead the pride, rather than to frolic in the fields, and cower at the thought of wolves. With that said, I think that even the fiercest and strongest war-like man has to know that there’s a part of him that has to fall in line. A part of him that must be subdued and soft. When I was a child, my dad and I loved to wrestle. His strength was and still is baffling. I’ve watched him lift things no man should lift. I’ve felt the strength in his grip. As we would wrestle, he’d show me that strength, but it was always measured and held back. I always knew that this man had the power to crush my little skull with his bare hands, and the fact that he didn’t showed me more about his strength than anything. He was wild like a lion, but he was tempered. “For after years of living in a cage, a lion no longer even believes it is a lion . . . and a man no longer believes he is a man.” ― John Eldredge, Wild at Heart Revised and Updated: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul I don’t want to see men tamed. I think it’s a dangerous thing to take a lion and to train him to be a house-cat. When I talk about finding balance, I don’t mean that men should be tamed. I think they should be TEMPERED. Men, finding balance does not mean that you are abandoning your lionhood in order to be a lamb. http://www.manlihood.com/lion-or-lamb-finding-balance-part-1/

MMC 41- Man Crush Monday - The Last of the Barenuckles
Keep in mind - not all of the heroes we recognize are perfect. If you look hard enough - you’ll find a reason to disqualify anybody from admiration. We propose a better plan, though - look for the good first. You can learn a good lesson from anyone if you are willing. Growing up as an Irish Immigrant at the turn of the last century usually meant you’d be tough - and prone to fighting. Young John grew up on the streets of South Boston - but his parents had hoped he’d be a Catholic Priest - not known for their fisticuffs. John dropped out of Boston College to try his hand at baseball. Eventually - bareknuckle boxing was his sport of choice. Despite the sport’s battle for legitimacy and eventual loss to a more sensible form of gloved boxing. (which John also excelled at.) You might recognize John - his likeness has become a popular “tough guy” meme. For being a hard as nails man with grit - for being skilled at his sport - today’s Man Crush Monday is John Sullivan

MMC 39- What BOYS Do - Part 3- Waste Time - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 39: What BOYS Do - Part 3: Waste Time There’s a bible verse that says, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like achild. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. “ As we become men, we put away the things that boys do - one of those things is wasting time. When we are young – time seems to move slower. My friend Mike McAvoy says that life is like a roll of toilet paper – and it goes faster the closer you get to the end of the roll. Now – Mike is a preacher, not a physicist – but it seems to make sense enough to me. There is nothing wrong with boys who spend their vast amount of slow-moving time tossing baseballs around, or playing cops and robbers, or building with plastic blocks, or catching fish. But when a boy becomes a man – and his time starts to move faster – his time becomes currency. And a man uses his currency and his time wisely. Does that mean he abandons all leisure pursuits? Certainly not! It’s perfectly acceptable for a man to sit on a shore with a hook in the water, waiting for a fish. But what it does mean is that he is intentional with his time. Every minute spent is used for a greater purpose. Leisure is not about wasting time – but rather about recharging yourself spiritually, physically and mentally. We use our leisure as an investment in ourselves and in our families. If we make it a point to manage our time, we find ourselves less stressed, and more productive. MMC38- What BOYS Do - Part 2- Fight - Manlihood ManCast - 2:21:18, 12.13 AM
Episode 38: What BOYS Do - Part 2: Fight Teddy Roosevelt said, “Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.” As we continue to look at the things that BOYS do - that should get put on the shelf when they become men - one of them is fighting. Certainly – there is a time and a place for that glorious moment that a bully or a tyrant receive a blow to the nose. I firmly believe that when people say, “Violence is never the answer” they forget that there are things worth fighting for – and there are people who need to be corrected with physical force. But we’re not talking about fighting for a greater purpose. We’re talking about the schoolyard scrapping, and drunken brawls, and incessant need to win every argument – whether by force or sheer ego. Many times people fight for the sake of proving their strength. Real men do not need such victories to define their worth. If I’m minding my own business, and a man physically assaults me, I’m going to defend myself, and I’m going to do what it takes to win. But fighting and arguing and winning should never be what drives me, or motivates me. A man should be secure enough in his self and in his own strength that he doesn’t need to pick fights and push his way to the top. When I was a boy – I had to fight almost every day. I was bullied and pushed around. There were times when my fights were to protect myself, and times when my fights were to prove myself. I wish that I could have understood that I didn’t need to prove myself with my fists… or for that matter, with my arguments. The truth is – you can be right, and you can be better than everyone else in the room, without it mattering whether or not everyone knows it. Boys fight to prove their worth. Men know their worth, and only fight to protect and defend. MMC 37- What BOYS Do - Part 1- Whine - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 37: What BOYS Do - Part 1: Whine Remember that 90’s RnB Group Boys II Men? Yeah. They were great. That has nothing to do with what we’re talking about though. What we’re talking about is common behaviors that should have died off when a boy became a man. The first one of those behaviors? Whining Obviously – men do this. It is a behavior that didn’t just “die” with the onset of manhood – but it should. I don’t think that identifying something that is wrong and needs to be repaired is the same thing as whining. It’s okay to identify a need, talk about solutions, and then implement solutions. Now that we’ve established that- let’s talk about whining. Boys who don’t get their way complain about it. Men learn to deal with it, and find solutions to problems. Life isn’t fair. It’s true, and you still have to deal with it. Whining about it rarely levels the playing field, but learning to rise above it is the ultimate reward. Harvey Mackay Firmness in enduring and exertion is a character I always wish to possess. I have always despised the whining yelp of complaint and cowardly resolve. Robert Burns The tendency to whining and complaining may be taken as the surest sign symptom of little souls and inferior intellects. Francis Jeffrey If you want to behave like a man – you won’t whine. Complaining changes nothing but other’s attitudes about you. MMC 36- Man Crush Monday - Before the Bullet - Manlihood ManCast
Episode 36: Man Crush Monday - Before the Bullet Today’s ManCrushMonday is well known for meeting his untimely demise from a bullet. It’s a notorious death. We’ve all heard about it. In fact - the last few years leading up his death are the years we are all familiar with. Before that - he was raised as the grandchild of four irish immigrants - immigrants who seized the American dream, and their family did well for themselves. Well enough, anyway, that Jack grew up in boarding school, as his father spent long stretches of time away from the family on business. Young Jack blew up toilets with cherry bombs, and led a gang of trouble makers called “The Muckers” That troublemaking thoug
