GenXtemporaneous

By Marc Snediker and Kristina Lorusso
No niche for us -- we can't be contained. Kristina does the research, Marc tells the jokes, and together they discuss a variety of topics intelligently but with so many laughs. It is kind of like being at a party when the small talk stops and the real conversations begin.

Welcome to part two of our series on Sexual Fantasies. We are GenX and we aren't afraid to discuss these delicate matters in front of you, our listeners. Episode 103: The Science of Sexual Fantasies Part I
What turns us on and why? Marc and Kristina examine this subject in a fun but thoughtful way. Do men and women fantasize about different kinds of things? They sure do. We explore this both through big data and also personal interviews. Trigger warning: Unsurprisingly, this episode deals frankly with sex acts and sexuality. Episode 99: Life Lessons in Gen X Movies: When Harry Met Sally
In July, 1989, "When Harry Met Sally..." was released. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in the definitive rom-com of the decade. In this episode, we plumb the depths of this Rob Reiner film, searching for life lessons. We discuss the nature of relationships, cheating, and whether men and women can be friends. This is a pre-sensitivity chip era, so you might get your feelings hurt. But there are lessons in that, as well. Sources “When Harry Met Sally...” 2022. Wikipedia. Episode 94: Dance! Dance, dance, dance!: Mass Hysteria, Dancing Plagues, and Outrage Culture
In the sixteenth century, Frau Troffea stepped out of her house into the streets of Strasbourg and started dancing.  She didn't stop even though her feet grew bloody and her body became physically exhausted until many days later when she was taken to the shrine of St. Vitus.  While she was dancing, others joined in and at one point up to 400 people had been afflicted by the "dancing plague".  In this episode, Marc and Kristina wrap up their discussion about crowd behavior by talking about the extremes.  They discuss the reasons why psychologists and historians think the dancing plagues happened, what other mass hysterical events have occurred over time, and how mass hysteria may manifest today.  If you'd like more content, please join the patreon at patreon.com/genxtemporaneous.   Sources Waller, John. 2009. Episode 80: The Ethics Episode
In this episode, Marc and Kristina discuss one of the key philosophical debates: what is good? They question what is moral and whether morality is an absolute or if it exists as a relative concept.  For example: is being mean always bad or is there a time when being mean is bad unless someone else is mean and then it is okay to apply meanness to exact revenge.  This episode will provide context for the "Anna Delvey vs Tinder Swindler are all scams equally as bad" conversation next week.  Thank you for coming to listen to us each week, we are grateful for your time! Episode 79: The Significance of Being Seen
We interrupt our true crime arc due to an unexpected illness of a planned guest.  To fill the gap, Marc and Kristina explore being seen, which, according to some psychologists, is a basic human need that has a basis in evolutionary science. In this episode Marc and Kristina dig into this concept and question why people don’t feel seen, how they go about being seen, and what happens when no one pays attention.  Crisis of meaning arc reactivated, everyone.   Thank you for coming to see us each week.  If you crave additional content from us, please follow us on our Patreon page for genXtemporaneous after dark: https://www.patreon.com/genXtemporaneous  We will be offering at least 3 additional episodes each month and there are already 3 episodes there for you to binge.

Episode 78: True Crime Sleuths: Who Wins the Fenton Hardy Award for Excellence?
After a couple of weeks palate cleanser (while Kristina did more reading and research) we are once again back into the True Crime arc and today we are discussing true crime amateur sleuths.  We are going to speak to the evolution of sleuthing, how sleuthing can help, how it can harm and overarching it all is what some online scholars have identified as a late modern backlash against experts.  We’re going to be asking the question: do they sleuth because they do not trust the prevailing authority and how does solipsism fit into everything? Episode 77: Legally Binding Jawn: Are celebs subject to a social contract with their fans?
In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss a question suggested to us by a friend of the podcast: Is there a social contract that exists between celebrities and their fans?  We look at first what the social contract is from a purely political perspective (Locke, Rousseau and Hobbes at their finest) and then we apply it to celebrity to see how or if it works.  We are talking about a number of fandoms here including YouTubers Joel and Lia, Duran Duran, and in particular the fracas that erupted around Adele cancelling her residency in Las Vegas at the eleventh hour.   Please join us on social media @seriousproduce and @marceatspeach on Twitter and @genxtemporaneous on Insta (where we go live) and genxtemporaneous for our facebook group.

Episode 75: She had it coming: Victim blaming in true crime
In this episode, the second in their true crime arc, Marc and Kristina discuss the role of the victim in the true crime genre.  Historically, when the victim began to enter the narrative, authors and audiences tended to place the blame for their victimhood on their shoulders.  As time has gone on, authors, and especially podcasters, have tried to find ways to recenter the victim as an agent in the narrative.  In this episode, Marc and Kristina discuss this trend, the reasons why victim blaming may have happened at all, and whether or not there is a way for people to approach the victim's stories without "blaming" them at all. Episode 74: True Crime as a Genre:
In this episode, Marc and Kristina start a multi-episode arc looking at True Crime.  They lay groundwork here, discussing how genre theoretically works as a social construct that serves a symbolic function and then we turn more practical and examine the way that True Crime, as a genre, has evolved over time in three parts: method of presentation, authority, and focus.  This episode will serve as a foundation for the next several episodes, so stick with us for more. Get in Losers, we're going to the mall.  Not really.  In this episode, Marc and Kristina discuss meangirls and whether women are just catty, nasty people at heart who hate other women and do whatever they can to destroy perceived enemies, or are they conditioned to be that way?  We use the rumored beef between Kim Catrall and those other three ladies on Sex and the City as an example of the way women hit at other women. Episode 63: It's Misogynistic and Drips with Colonialistic Overtones, But it Has a Catchy Beat and I Can Dance to It: Problematic 80s songs
Marc and Kristina are looking at political correctness and the way that concept has evolved over time.  We put ten GenX favorite songs to the test.  Yep they are problematic.  Yep we still like them.  Trigger warning: some of these lyrics are really problematic from a homophobia, misogynistic, sexist, colonialistic perspective.  If this isn't your vibe, we understand and we look forward to seeing you next week.   Sources David Bowie, China Girl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMiY_ekrPSk Josie Cotton, Johnny Are You Queer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ2X2_ts5Kw Beastie Boys, Girls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoFB2R_AUwM Benny Mardones, Into the Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG6cyLOQ3zs The Police, Don't Stand So Close to Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j75tJNYwWkY Bob Geldof, Midge Ure, Do They Know its Christmas Time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RGz3vdJg00 The Police, Every Breath You Take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wsMEj2ZfW8 The Vapors, Turning Japanese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCj2I0EJ9PM The Human League, Don't You Want Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqtXyQEHC58 The Rolling Stones, Brown Sugar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOfDD2OYOZE Dire Straits, Don't Stand So Close to Me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YJUJPvySQg Frank Loesser, Baby it's Cold Outside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rhvtzzmq-Y Crockett, Emily. Episode 62: Richard Chamberlain and The Thorn Birds: The Blind Ambition Tour
In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss ambition, Aristotle, 1980s Miniseries and the Thorn Birds.  We are looking at the way ambition drives the characters in the Thorn Birds to basically make themselves miserable.  We place key characters on an Aristotelian ambition continuum and we are generally kind of ooged out by the fact that 1980s audiences were so astonished at the thought of a priest falling in love that they missed the grooming of a child by an adult man.  Plus we laugh and laugh and laugh.   Sources: Arnold, Eve.  The Quest for More: You Can Be Ambitious and Happy. This is a re-promote of the second episode in our NXIVM arc.  This week we're diving deep into the second episode of the Starz documentary Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult.  We uncover more of Keith's grossness and feel really sorry for India but less sorry for Mark Vicente who seems to really like the way that Keith gets him to the punchline of a very bad joke.  Also:  Keith! Stop telling jokes.  Please give us a rating where you can and subscribe and share with a friend if you enjoy us.  Thanks for coming back each week to listen; we appreciate your support. Episode 58: He's a friend when things get tough: puppets, colonialization of Sleestaks and Saturday morning GenX kids shows
Is it time for timer?  Do you hanker for a hunk of cheese?  Did you wake up early before your parents, make a bowl of cereal and eat it in front of the tv watching all your favorite shows?  Do you know who the Banana Splits are?  How about HR Pufnstuf?  Are you afraid of Sleestaks?  We've got the episode for you.  We look first at the history of puppets (very briefly) and then we go into the world of 70s children's shows focusing on the wildness of Sid and Marty Krofft properties HR Pufnstuf and The Land of the Lost. Is it a classic genXtemporaneous?  Maybe not classic.  But it is at least as good as HR Pufnstuf and we do it without a laugh track. Sources: Ericksson, Hal. Trigger warning: This episode contains brief discussion about ending one's own life; if that is a trigger for you, we'll see you next week.  :)  Does GenX finally get the nuance of The Big Chill?  This film came out when we were in our teens.  While we may not have appreciated it fully at the time, we totally get it now.  In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss the Big Chill, what it means to the characters and what it means to us.  Also Marc mansplains, Marcsplains, and hatches a plan for a one-man show.  Source: The Big Chill.  Lawrence Kasdan, September 28, 1983.

Episode 56: Are Those Your Leggings, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?: The Culty World of MLMs and LuLaRoe
Marc and Kristina are back at it with cult life (this episode was actually recorded weeks before the Fandom episodes and you might say that this research made them wonder if they'd discovered a nascent cult in the genX corner of TikTok).  In this episode they examine the false promise of MLMs, the flaw in the girl boss culture that it promotes, and how things can get really culty, really fast without anyone seeing what's going on; just like that its cult o'clock. Episode 54: From Tiger Beat to Tiger King: The Stanification of a GenX Fandom (episode 2a)
In the first of a 2-part episode (part b to be released on Sunday), Marc and Kristina continue the dive into the GenX-dominated fandom/standom that surrounds William White, a 21-year-old TikTok creator and model from Canada.  During the researching of this project, Marc and Kristina have repeatedly questioned how the fandom went from women sincerely supporting women and together helping to catapult a deserving young man to internet fame, all the way to virtual gang warfare in five months.  We believe that social media (with its promise of anonymity, false sense of intimacy, and a misguided sense of security around expectations of privacy) and the perfect storm of events surrounding the discovery of William White by his Generation X fans (who themselves were seeking fun and perhaps connection and camaraderie on a new social media platform), have led to a standom that is marked on all sides by bullying, organized propaganda campaigns, disinformation, doxxing, threats of legal action, growing resentments that devolve into angry outbursts, and, most dramatically, the involvement of state and federal law enforcement actively investigating various allegations. William White is actually secondary to this narrative.  He is discussed only as and when he illustrates a point within the story of his fandom.  This is not a biography of William or the things he did last summer.  Neither Marc, nor Kristina, is interested in bashing William or hurting him.  We only wish him the best as his career continues. Episode 53: From Tiger Beat to Tiger King: The Rise of a GenX Fandom
In this episode, Marc and Kristina explore the difference between fandom, standom, and cults.  This episode provides a framework for exploring, once again, the crisis of meaning and the ways in which people look for communities to join and find support and camaraderie.  We dig into what defines each branch of admiration and community and we lay the groundwork for the next episode in this series, which will do a deep dive into the rise of a relatively new fandom that has fluoresced around a young Canadian TikTok creator and fledgling model called William White.  William, at 21, energized a following that is largely made up of women ranging in age from late 30s to beyond 70 beginning during Memorial Day weekend of 2020.  By the time of this publication, the fandom has devolved into warring factions where the daily norm involves leaked personal messages, bullying threats of doxxing, family members being harrassed, coordinated mass reporting of accounts across multiple social media platforms, threats of legal action and death threats.  All of this is accomplished in the name of a young man whose consistent message to fans has been to spread joy and positivity and unity.   This is why we can't have nice things, darling.   Research and citations below.   Taylor Swift Fandom: Toxic or Harmless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U14VPAkhAKg&t=311s Why Stan Culture is Toxic for Everyone, Including Celebrities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIdR7Er-zkI NXIVM On Trial produce by the Albay Times Union -- the paper that was publishing negative articles and cautionary tales about Keith Rainere and NXIVM for many years before the downfall Streaming and Television HBO's "The Vow" which tells the story of former high level NXIVM members Mark Vicente, Bonnie Piesse, Sarah Edmondson and her husband NIppy Starz's "Seduced" which tells the story of India Oxenburg and her Journey into and out of the NXIVM cult Taylor Swift Worshipped by NeoNazis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEdAtX_ze68&t=35s Imaginary Friends and Real World Consequences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22yoaiLYb7M&t=285s The Meaning Crisis for Beginners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaXWUE1SXpI&t=199s Why do People Join Cults (Ted Ed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB-dJaCXAxA   Are Fandoms Good or Unhealthy Obsessions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onxeBOnjWnU Fraade-Blanar, Zoe. Episode 52: Repost of Get on The Keith Train
Marc and I have been busy doing a lot of research for this week's upcoming episode (and by Marc and I, I mean me) and we're about to dive back into that cult life.  To get you warmed up, we're reposting Episode 10, which was about the NXIVM sex cult through the documentary Seduced.   Coming on Friday we are going to discuss a situation that we've touched on in a light-hearted way earlier in this season when we discussed the nostalgic rise of William White on TikTok.  Things have taken a turn for the dark and we are going to dig into what we are looking at as clearly cult like behavior.   So please enjoy this episode to get in the mood and then come back on Friday for more.

Episode 39: Nostalgia and the Tao of Whiteyy18
Hi everyone.  We are back and refreshed after a week off for the Memorial Day Holiday.  This episode is all about the good old days and what nostalgia is all about.  This was sparked by TikTok sensation Whiteyy18 and the onslaught of 80s nostalgia that caused women of a certain age to fly their cougar flags for the last two weeks (and it shows no signs of slowing down).  Marc and Kristina talk about what nostalgia is, has it always been a thing, and whether it is dangerous.  We also give you a crash course in what's going on with this 21 year old Canadian man on TikTok so that by the time it makes it to your Facebook feeds you will be in the know. Thank you for supporting us each week and we would be grateful, if you like us, if you would share us with a friend. Social media here:  https://linktr.ee/xtemporaneouspod

Episode 36: A Very Special Xtemporaneous
The "Clips Episode" is a time-honored tradition on network television. Whenever the writers felt particularly creatively bankrupt, they would air a Clips Episode. Justified by a flimsy Frame Story, the show mostly featured short vignettes from past episodes. Marc, our intrepid hero, is struck in the head by a baseball hat and descends into a deamlike state from which he remembers his glorious past as a podcaster. Episode 32: Q2 Electric Boogaloo
From the article The Making of QAnon: A Crowdsourced Conspiracy:  "Here is the core of the QAnon myth: with the aid of a small group of military intelligence officers called the Q team (one or more of whom is supposedly responsible for writing the drops), President Donald Trump is waging a shadow war against a cabal of Satan-worshipping, child-eating pedophiles who are conspiring to obstruct and overthrow him. The military will arrest them en masse in an event called “the Storm.” The cabal’s membership has grown in the telling (at first, it was “many in our government;” within a month, any “celebs” who had “supported HRC” might very well be in on it; a few months later, there were too many to fit into Guantanamo Bay; later still, three other “detention centers [were] being prepped”), but it would be fair to say that virtually anyone who’s angered or defied President Trump is considered part of the cabal, along with the usual suspects like financier and philanthropist George Soros."  In this episode (part 2 of 3), Marc and Kristina begin to dig into the origins of the Q conspiracy, the predecessors, the acolytes, and the places where Q found a means of disseminating its message.  We will be relying on our own research as well as diving into two documentaries.  Q: Into the Storm, a multiyear effort at uncovering Q's identity filmed by Cullen Hoback and currently available on HBO Max as well as QAnon the Search for Q by  Marley Clements and Bayan Joonam for Spike TV and currently available on YouTube.   Here's our linktree  https://linktr.ee/xtemporaneouspod About Q's predecessors: FBIAnon:  https://steemit.com/fbianon/@aggroed/fbi-anon-one-of-the-best-inside-leakers-out-there FBIAnon beginning of PizzaGate https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/anatomy-of-a-fake-news-scandal-125877/ HLIAnon: https://steemit.com/hundredthmonkey/@dreamtime/high-level-insider-ama-from-4chan-transcripts-easy-to-read-not-in-4chan-form-part-6-7-11-16-4 About the Chans The birth of 4Chan:  https://medium.com/@DaleBeran/4chan-the-skeleton-key-to-the-rise-of-trump-624e7cb798cb The making of QAnon: A Crowdsourced Conspiracy:  https://www.bellingcat.com/news/americas/2021/01/07/the-making-of-qanon-a-crowdsourced-conspiracy/ About Q Basic overview:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QAnon QAnon the Search for Q : The Search for Q:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsN96zE8FuE&t=1089s The Making of QAnon: A Crowdsourced Conspiracy:  https://www.bellingcat.com/news/americas/2021/01/07/the-making-of-qanon-a-crowdsourced-conspiracy/ Q: Into the Storm, Directed by Cullen Hoback, 2021, currently available on HBO Max

Episode 28: Mario, Rivers, Chris, Andrew?: The Rise and Fall of Governor Cuomo
This week we're talking about what everyone else is talking about, posting about online, and tweeting about.  Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has become embroiled in a couple of things that are making for bad optics.  Named America's governor during the early stages of the Covid Pandemic, and known for his measured and calming press conferences during the time, he is now facing charges of covering up the number of Covid-related deaths in New York nursing homes and is also dealing with accusations of sexual misconduct from six separate women.  Despite calls for his resignation, Governor Cuomo (we think quite rightly) is standing his ground and asking for a full investigation to play out.  We dip our toes into the implications of narcissism in politics, the blunt force trauma that can come from unchecked cancel culture, the possible rehabilitation of Al Franken, and the future of Rivers Cuomo on the New York political scene.  We have to laugh or Kristina will cry. This week, we examine the treatment of female celebrities by the media and public. We really finally wrap up our exploration into 80s music with a bunch of hot takes on girl bands, one hit wonders, 80s dance jams, non 80s bands that everyone rocked out to in the 80s, and finally songs from today that sound like 80s music.  We had just a blast with this arc and we hope you enjoyed it too.  Citations and credits from last week's episode and this week below.   Example of "toasting" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Apvga3w1wA&t=60s Fly on the Windscreen, Depeche Mode; Hot Blooded, Foreigner; Love Will Tear us Apart, Joy Division; Digital Versicolor, Glass Candy; Come on Out, Airborne Toxic Event, Lemon, U2; One Night in Bangkok, Murray Head; Puttin on the Ritz, Taco; In a Big Country, Big Country; Send me an Angel, Real Life;  99 Luftballoons, Nena; Come on Eileen, Dexy's Midnight Runners; Middle of the Road, Pretenders; Vacation, The GoGo's; Aie A Mwana, Bananarama; Pump up the Jam, Technotronic; Pretty Young Thing, Michael Jackson; No Sleep Til Brooklyn, Beastie Boys; Infomer, Snow; You Got What I need, Biz Markie; The Real Slim Shady, Eminem; Ain't Nuthin but G Thang, Dr. Dre ft Snoop Dogg; Rico Suave, Gerardo; Ice Ice Baby, Vanilla Ice; La di da di, Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh; We Can't Stop, Miley Cyrus; Come on Eileen, Save Ferris; Wuethering Heights, Kate Bush; Johnny are you Queer, Josie Cotton; The Wild Life, Bananarama; Tower of Strength, The Mission; Genius of Love, Tom Tom Club; Buffalo Stance, Neneh Cherry; Christmas in Hollis, Run DMC; Round the Way Girl, LL Cool  J; Insane in the Brain, Cypress Hill; Planet Rock, Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force; Rapture, Blondie; The Message, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five; Rapper's Delight, The Sugar Hill Gang; Here Comes the Judge, Pigmeat Markham;

Episode 19: 80s Music - The Soundtrack of Marc's Life Part 2
Marc and Kristina explore the foundations of hair metal and the new romantic movement in this episode.  Its the second of a three episode arc about 80s music.  Digressions include the significance of MTV, Kristina's imposter syndrome, and Beavis and  Butthead as the greatest music critics of the 20th century.  We LOVE the 80s and we're just going to hang out in this decade for the next couple of weeks until the cluster that is already 2021 blows over.  It was just better then.   Bienstock, Richard. Episode 18: 80s Music: The Soundtrack to Marc's Life Part One
In this episode, Marc and Kristina explore 80s music.  We examine topics like: what makes 80s music sound so identifiably 80s; what does New Wave really mean; what are some of the 80s genres and which artists and songs fit into those genres.  This was a hard episode for us to stay focused on the research because we are too close to the subject and that leads to some pretty serious digressions but we tried to keep on track.  We will be creating a bonus episode that is less structured and chattier and allows Marc to talk all about his personal experiences, which is really all he wants to do.  Please see below for our citations list.       Willman, Chris.  Don’t You Forget About Me: Why 80s Music Is Cooler Than You Think. Episode 17: I always knew Alec was a Republican: 80s movies part 2
In this episode we finish up our conversation about 80s movies we love with Matt Snediker.  Matt has created a top 1000 movies of all time list and it is amazing.  Please check it out here:  http://bit.ly/TopAcclaimed We have nothing to do with these films, obviously, other than being fans.  Please go check them out, though, if you haven't already.   Join in the conversation with us about these films at xtemporaneous (our facebook group), @xtemporaneouspod on Instagram or email us directly at xtemporaneouspod@gmail.com. Episode 16: I could be the Walrus, I'd still have to bum rides off people: 80s movies that make us nostalgic
In this episode, Marc and Kristina are joined by Matt Snediker to discuss three films that premiered in the 1980s.  This is the first of a two-part episode and marks the beginning of our deep dive into the 80s as a decade defined by film, music, fashion, and role playing culture.  As always, none of us has anything to do with the creation of these films, we are simply using them as primary sources to answer our overarching question: What film most screams 80s to you and why?  Digressions include Marc's new date Jeep, Marc's age, and Matt's most excellent film ranking system.  We heartily recommend that you revisit these (or any of your favorite 80s movies).  It was a fun time to go to the movies! Episode 15: Bad Incel: Elliot Rodger
In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss Elliot Rodger's rampage.  He was a bad guy.  He was also a sick guy.  Digressions include mental health, the need for us to just post a buckle the f*ck up warning on every podcast we publish because we're possibly not the most sensitive people in the world, and Marc's remarkable revelation that at 16, being rejected by a girl, is not the end of the world; never never give up hope, you guys!! Episode 14: Incel-Bop: Can't get no girls
There seems to be no one with less meaning in their lives than these guys.  In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss the very unfortunate world of the many men (and few women) who consider themselves Involuntarily celibate.  Digressions include forced monogamy, chads and stacys, and why Kristina didn't bring wine.  Please see links below to do more research on your own. Episode 13: Keith Raniere Goes Down
Our exploration of the Seduced documentary comes to an end with this episode.  Keith Raniere is exposed for the creepy and dangerous weirdo that he is and Marc and Kristina speculate about the role that privilege plays in the final judgments all around.  We have nothing to do with the Starz Documentary beyond the fact that we encourage you to check it out.  The NXIVM cult is a truly terrifying thing.  Next week we continue our examination of the things people do to find meaning in their lives with a deep dive into incel culture.  We are grateful that you come back and listen each week.   Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult Episode 4 Exposed. Episode 12: Doom und Horth (aka Keith Raniere sucks)
This episode continues our exploration of the crisis of meaning through the lens of cult life.  We dive deep into Episode 3 of the Starz documentary Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult.  This was a tough episode to watch, and deals with a lot of gross Keith-ish stuff so please know that you may be triggered.  Keith is a disgusting  garbage person.  We appreciate your support and thank you for listening to us each week.  Please like and subscribe and give us a review on iTunes.  We welcome your feedback at xtemporaneouspod@gmail.com.  Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult Episode 3 Enslaved. Episode 11: o-fish-hole -- I like how you got me there
This is the second in our NXIVM arc (which is the first arc in our Crisis of Meaning series) and as Marc mentions: all the numbers and arcs and episodes are getting very confusing! Episode 10: Get on the Keith Train
Bonus episode for you!  This is actually what last episode was supposed to be about before the spirit moved Marc and I to get into a lengthy debate on the role of religion (or lack thereof, as a part of the crisis of meaning.  Today's bonus is the first of three that will examine cults through the lens of NXIVM.  In it we use the Starz Network documentary Seduced: Inside the NXVIM Cult to help us put cult life into relief.  We don't give a detailed background on what NXIVM is all about but we recommend several titles (beside the Starz Network's Seduced) if you have additional interest.   Podcasts: Escaping NXIVM for Sarah Edmondson's side of the story NXIVM On Trial produce by the Albay Times Union -- the paper that was publishing negative articles and cautionary tales about Keith Rainere and NXIVM for many years before the downfall Streaming and Television HBO's "The Vow" which tells the story of former high level NXIVM members Mark Vicente, Bonnie Piesse, Sarah Edmondson and her husband NIppy Other Links of interest and citation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0hUX2ldxpM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB4jNevW3AY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwi9Q9apHGI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NWIfiV1_XQ https://www.starz.com/us/en/series/59967/episodes?season=1  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13269706/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8lzmbAn8_Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjUyM_xd6IA

Episode 09: There's a shadow on the door of a cottage on the shore
This is the first episode of a multi-episode series that examines what Professor John Vervaeke has called the Crisis of Meaning.  Marc and Kristina begin a discussion outlining what a crisis of meaning may be and there is a massive digression into a debate over whether Religion provides people with meaning, and, as a result, feelings of contentedness and connection.  Meaning or purpose is something that Victor Frankl posited was the most important thing in any individual's life and is the crux of logotherapy, a form of psychotherapy that he developed and that is considered one of the three Viennese schools of therapy (along with Freud's and Adler's contributions).   In this series we will be exploring the ways that people have found meaning in their lives.  Because our digression into religion took up so much time, we will be dropping a bonus episode by Sunday!  See below for links to the things we talk about or reference in this episode.  If you find us entertaining we'd appreciate if you would share us with a friend and/or give us a review and a rating on itunes.   https://www.verywellmind.com/an-overview-of-victor-frankl-s-logotherapy-4159308 https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/religion-happy-atheism-psychology-faith-belief-emotion-mental-health-christianity-a8766376.html https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/01/31/are-religious-people-happier-healthier-our-new-global-study-explores-this-question/ https://www.youtube.com/user/johnvervaeke https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jan/07/witchcraft-economics-reformation-catholic-protestant-market-share https://qz.com/1183992/why-europe-was-overrun-by-witch-hunts-in-early-modern-history/ https://books.google.com/books?id=yFloAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA287&lpg=PA287&dq=did+changing+charity+and+alms+giving+lead+to+witchcraft+craze&source=bl&ots=NImCU9uLVd&sig=ACfU3U3Q5ZQUpPU5SQaUyWYePs2ZNNsHoQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiQ_-7xsO_sAhUFxVkKHY0UDgs4ChDoATAFegQIARAC#v=onepage&q=did%20changing%20charity%20and%20alms%20giving%20lead%20to%20witchcraft%20craze&f=false https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5FPPoLqkCk

Episode 08: Marc vs White Nationalists
He's been dying to talk about it and here it is!  Marc has almost a full hour to discuss his views on white nationalism and political correctness.  Do not anticipate that this will be the last you hear of it from him, though.  He's like a dog with a bone if the bone was a bunch of garbagy racist weirdos and the dog was a middle aged guy with glasses.  In this episode I reference a debate over Political Correctness featuring Jordan Peterson, Stephen Fry, Eric Michael Dyson, and Michele Goldberg.  If you have an interest in this sort of thing, I highly recommend.  Link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxYimeaoea0&t=6218s

Pump up the volume on this one everyone, we have had a slew of issues with our recording program and some weird sound stuff happening when we recorded the zoom call.  We promise, this is getting fixed in future episodes!!!  We have guests on this episode, you guys!  Thanks to Mike and Laurie for joining us to discuss the political landscape and what we think is wrong with it.  We also wonder what might be coming in a Post-Trump world and Marc disagrees with everyone, because he doesn't hate both parties.  It was a evening of wine, politics and goatees; we hope you enjoy it and come back to listen again.!

Bonus: Toobin Exposed
In this bonus episode, Marc and Kristina explore the recent fallout from the Jeffrey Toobin Zoom exposure.  Was it impulsive? Was it compulsive? Why do men do such things?  Can anyone actually watch an entire triple feature XXX matinee? (also, why is triple spelled the way it is and not tripple?)  What does any of this have to do with 80s girl bands?  And who is Belin and how does Marc feel about Flash Dance style sweatshirts?  We're here for all of it, you guys!  Come on in and give us a listen.  If you like us, share with a friend! Episode 05 Essential Oils: Spend your 6.99 on a Latte instead of tea tree oil
This is the next installment in our war on science series and we're looking at the first episode of the Netflix documentary (un)Well "Essential Oils".  This trend is a little too soothing for us to go too hard at the concept, but never fear!  Marc and I have plenty to say about a couple of the key figures featured in this episode.  Dr. Z, my dude, we are coming to drag you!  Listen for digressions into gangster rap, a little bit of our personal experience with western medicine and as always, Marc tells jokes.   Thank you for listening to us each week.  We hope if you like us that you'll leave a review and share with friends. Xtemporaneous Trailer
This is the first trailer for Xtemporaneous, a weekly podcast featuring Marc Snediker and Kristina Lorusso.  We will discuss a variety of socially relevant topics irreverently.  Together we'll learn, we'll opine, there will probably be cocktails, it is bound to get political, and Marc will definitely make jokes.  Watch for upcoming episodes on cancel culture, a series exploring the war on Science (including a deep dive into Daniel Clark's flat-earther documentary Behind the Curve), a discussion about the crisis of meaning and much more.  Thanks for listening and watch for episodes soon!
