#84 Messy Workplaces, Bad Bosses & Office Politics: Navigate the Workplace w/ Isabel Berwick Host of Working It Podcast

Help us grow - check out Fountain fountain.fm

This week’s guest is Isabel Berwick, an expert in helping people navigate post-pandemic careers and understand workplace cultures, in order for them to thrive at work. The workplace has long been a site of drama - dealing with bad bosses, navigating office politics, salary negotiations, and the dreary 9-to-5 routine, not to mention sexist comments in the boardroom. I admit, I am in denial that I will ever be going through menopause (I’m sure many women are). I don’t want to think about yet another life change. I just had my kids. And maybe that’s the problem. As a society we are pretending that these issues don’t exist, resulting in a lack of representation and systems that reflect women’s needs at different life stages. We still prize youth in women and don’t see enough models of what life looks like as you age. My guest today is a trailblazer who is rewriting the narrative and proving that you don’t need to be 30 under 30 to overcome addictions, battle self-hate AND start a new business. Tune in if you want to be seriously inspired about carving out your own path and doing it on your own terms. #74 Gaby Hersham: Working from Home or the Office, How Huckletree is Redefining Flexible Working

Expectations of the office have changed. That typical dreary, depressing office block with uniform cubicles - who wants to go there? No one. So who’s out there, trying to change that? My guest is Gaby Hersham, the co-founder of Huckletree, a network of community-driven and design-led workspaces which aims to challenge the typical workspace model. She believes that a well-designed workspace can profoundly impact your work and mindset for the better. Gaby tells me about conceptualising Huckletree, leading a physical office business through COVID-19, and the future of flexible spaces. We discuss why working from the office is beneficial in helping with innovation, creativity and productivity, and she shares her thoughts on why your colleagues shouldn’t be like family, as well as balancing work and family life, and overcoming “mum guilt”. #73 Confronting a Multi-Millionaire on Loving Money, Andrew Tate & Toxic Masculinity Rob Moore

#73 Confronting a Multi-Millionaire on Loving Money, Andrew Tate & Toxic Masculinity Rob Moore

Why are you obsessed with money? Do the rich have an obligation to right some wrongs? Is interviewing Andrew Tate commendable? And are you a misogynist if you don’t believe in the gender pay gap? These were the ‘small’ questions I asked Rob Moore, a property developer, multi-millionaire, money expert, and host of the Disruptors podcast. We dive into the topic of money - having it, not having it, and understanding it, as well as Rob’s opinions on whether the rich have an obligation to distribute wealth downwards. There’s no denying that Rob likes to stir the pot, but does he do it for clickbait or because he’s truly misogynistic, amoral, and avaricious? We debate on whether it’s moral to give a platform to people like Andrew Tate, and whether denying the existence of the gender pay gap is misogynistic. If you want to see a heated discussion on Money, Power, and Feminism, then tune in. What do you think? I want to hear from you too.

#68 Develop a Winning Mindset: Tips from Olympic Champion Grace Prendergast

How can an Olympic champion’s mindset help you to succeed in your professional life? In this week’s episode, I speak to Grace Prendergast, a former sweep rower who boasts 15 national championships in the premier category, Olympic gold, five world championship titles, and won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the coxless pair. We talk about trial and error before specialising, and that dabbling in her teenage years helped Grace decide on a career path. The life of a professional athlete is demanding - both physically and mentally. Grace explains that learning how her specific brain worked helped her to manage her emotions, become more self-aware, and enjoy small moments of satisfaction. Grace also establishes that there are no superstars in rowing - it’s all about teamwork. She talks about “productive conflict” and why you need it to improve, as well as valuing diversity in your team. If you’re curious about how an athlete’s mindset can help you in life, whether you want tips on knowing yourself, want your team to be the best, or what it feels like when you finally achieve your life’s ambition, then this episode is for you! #60 Building a Global Sisterhood of Empowered Mothers w/ Monique Hodgson founder of Mumble Forum

#60 Building a Global Sisterhood of Empowered Mothers w/ Monique Hodgson founder of Mumble Forum

Why is becoming a mother and, *gasp*, choosing to have a successful career so controversial? What is it about wanting to have both that people simply don’t get? And who is out there finding solutions? In this episode, I talk to someone who is out there trying to do just that. Monique Hodgson is the founder of Mumble Forum, a global networking platform which aims to build a supportive community of sisterhood, where women can network and celebrate each other’s success, as well as redefine the perception of motherhood. Monique and I explore the challenges faced by working mothers, reflecting on biases, labelling, and limitations placed on women as they enter the season of motherhood. We talk about expectations and preparations for motherhood, planning and prioritising for a balanced life, and discover practical strategies for avoiding burnout and finding fulfilment. We also discuss the importance of women advocating for each other, how more women in senior leadership positions can affect systematic change, how men (clearly) need women, and how women have a power of influence in raising the next generation. Monique’s positive and nurturing mindset, drawing inspiration from nature’s seasons for balance, and her belief in the importance of a supportive network, left me truly inspired. Don’t miss out on experiencing her wisdom firsthand in this episode! Let’s shift the narrative together, and create a supportive community where success is celebrated, diversity is embraced, and every woman is empowered to pursue her dreams. #59 Save Your Mind, Body and Heart: Insights from Cardiologist Jonathan Fisher

#59 Save Your Mind, Body and Heart: Insights from Cardiologist Jonathan Fisher

How does chronic stress affect the health of your heart? What does anger do to your arteries? These are the questions I asked Jonathan Fisher, MD, a Harvard-trained cardiologist with 20 years of clinical experience, who is in the process of writing his first book: “Just One Heart”. In this episode, we delve into the anatomy of society (capitalism, how we were raised as children, workplace culture) and its impact on our wellbeing, something Jonathan has seen first-hand. We talk about how the pressure of contemporary life has negatively impacted many people’s mental wellbeing and physical health, particularly their hearts. We also explore the connection between mind, body, and heart, burnout in high-stress professions, and the importance of valuing qualities like empathy and compassion in our workplaces. Jonathan introduces the concept of conscious capitalism and learning how to operate from a higher consciousness. I was particularly surprised by the often-misunderstood topic of anger and the concept of “broken heart syndrome”. I hope this conversation will inspire you to be kind to yourself, especially if you are running yourself a bit too thin and offer you compassion, healing and a moment of introspection. Subscribe / follow Anatomy of a Leader podcast for more episodes that encourage positive change and self-acceptance.

#57 All Saints: How Stuart Trevor's Bold Idea Transformed British Fashion

#57 All Saints: How Stuart Trevor's Bold Idea Transformed British Fashion

Do you know how All Saints came into being? Neither did I – that’s why I was so excited to speak with the iconic brand’s creator – Stuart Trevor.

Growing up in a council estate in Dundee, Stuart couldn’t afford brand new clothes so he had to make do with hand-me-downs and vintage clothing.

Inspired by David Bowie and Kate Bush, Stuart boldly experimented with audacious hairstyles and honed his craft in customising his school uniforms and aging threads, transforming his appearance into that of an indie rock star.

A mix of his bold look, his talent for sewing and a serendipitous meeting led him to discover that fashion degrees existed and the rest, as they say, is history.

Prepare for stories about how he bedazzled David Reiss founder of the namesake brand, the meteoric rise of All Saints, and dressing the once-unknown Kings of Leon.

Stuart's story is a testament to the power of creativity, understanding culture, and defying odds.

Follow the Anatomy of a Leader podcast to explore more incredible stories of leadership and find inspiration for your own journey.
