How Chinese Medicine Chose Me - My personal story of how I got into Acupuncture & Herbs - Marie Hopkinson S6 E4
Do you ever wonder how someone gets into the field of acupuncture and Chinese medicine? 🤔 Well, a subscriber asked, and my patients often ask me that very question and my story might just surprise you! I actually had never even had acupuncture before I started studying it.
Looking back it was kind of serendipitous. Sometimes I think that "Chinese Medicine chose me".
I'm so grateful I found this amazing medicine at 17 years old, and now I can't imagine doing anything else.

Discovering Classical Chinese Medicine - Interview with Collin Campbell (ICEAM) S4 Ep 12
Navigating the world of further study for Herbalists and Chinese medicine practitioners can be a tough one - where to start? Hopefully this episode will bring some clarity this for students of TCM, new graduates of TCM, practitioners who've been in business a long time but searching for something better for their patients AND even to our majority of listeners who are patients of those practitioners - give you some insights into what dedicated practitioners like Collin go through to become a respected teacher in the industry. It was such a pleasure to interview fellow colleague, Collin Campbell. Collin has been practicing Chinese Medicine for 15 years, and has devoted his career thus far to Classical Chinese medicine. In addition to his private practice, as part of training to become a fellow of ICEAM, Collin has seen over 1000 patients supervised by Dr Arnaud Versylus as part of his fellowship training. Some of the topics we discuss are the differences between studying TCM and Classical Chinese Medicine, the typical journey that many Chinese medicine practitioners take in their quest to learn Classical systems of Chinese medicine. ICEAM Is a pulse-based system of herbal medicine, we discuss how this relates to what ICEAM practitioners are taught.

How to Harmonise your spirit with the four seasons - with Tyler Rowe S4 ep9
Living in harmony with the seasons is a major feature of the health advice in the Nei Jing (Yellow Emperors classic of Internal Medicine), in this interview Marie discuss the relevance of this ancient wisdom in a modern world with Tyler Rowe. Tyler Rowe is not only an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist but an expert on Wu Yun Liu Qi. He's got a great sense of humor and is incredibly down to earth. How do we tackle things like Air-conditioning and artificially induced climates? How do different cultures tell when seasons change and what should we do in response to this to lessen the chance of getting sick from the environment (Cold and flu like illness).
This advice is super relevant for students of CM, patients of acupuncturists /CM and even practitioners themselves who are looking for relevant ways to interpret the Nei Jing and the seasonal advice. It was my absolute pleasure to record this interview and I hope you find this wisdom as useful as I do, for yourself and your family/ community.

Feel Happier Instantly - Know Your Character Strengths Part 1 S2 Ep5
Using one of your top 5 strengths in a new way is a method used by Psychologist, Martin Seligman and his theories of Strengths and virtues are well known. You an use this as a free way to find instant happiness in your own life, right now. This is a huge part of whats now known as Positive Psychology. THERE IS A PART 2, 3 and 4 coming in this series. Take the free test here: https://www.viacharacter.org/ I've used this personalty test with hundreds of patients and students over the years, and found it incredibly useful for myself as well. This isn't strictly Chinese Medicine BUT, it is incredibly relevant to the aspects of understanding ourselves and our interaction with the world (a Very Chinese Medicine concept) ... The VIA Strengths test is based on the research by well known Psychologist, Martin Seligman and his book, Strengths and Virtues. Its worth 10 minutes of your time to find out about yourself. Once you've taken the test, you'll get an email with your top 5 strengths...what then? -
One way to instantly increase happiness is to pick one of those strengths and do something new in it today. For instance if your strength is "Appreciation of Beauty" you could take a walk in your lunch break with the specific goal to find beautiful things around you. If your strength is creativity - you could explore something so new and different - often creative people enjoy taking risks or exploring something new...or you could dig around in the closet /shed for that old dusty guitar and start to play it again. Maybe join an creative craft group and learn how to knit! If your strength is Courage you could plan to do something adventurous today Kindness? - make a cake for you neighbor, buy a blanket for that homeless guy who hangs out the front of your local supermarket ...you get the idea. Judgement (Critical Thinking / open mindedness) - start a blog on a topic your passionate about. Teamwork - Join your local sports club, volunteer with a group who meet together to clean up the environment...get involved in a group with similar passions or interests. There are 24 different character strengths/virtues (check them out in the chart below) ...and lots of ways to use them, but it all starts with knowing what are your individual traits. Next week I'm going to do a video series on how to use this and how I've used it to help my patients and students live a happier and healthier life. I hope you have fun learning about yourself with the test.

Why are we using Western Medical parameters to measure Chinese Medicine? PART 2
Is thousands of years of history of medicine slowly going down the bureaucratic toilet? Part 2 of 2. This isn't a typical episode, but I have felt the need to get this issue out there for a while now.
Ive never had AHPRA try to interfere in my personal health until now... Discussion points include different systems of health care, and discussing are we slowly letting our system of medicine be eroded? Why this might be a bigger problem going forward using western medicine model to measure a different medicine system altogether...why isn't anyone concerned about that? Why isn't our board standing up for us about our system of medicine? How this has concerned me throughout the past 14 months. Is thousands of years of history of medicine slowly going down the toilet ?
If your a student of TCM (or a disillusioned practitioner) I think you will find this interesting.

Why are we using Western Medical parameters to measure Chinese Medicine? PART 1
This isn't a typical episode, but I have felt the need to get this issue out there for a while now. Part 1 of 2.
Discussion points include the pros and cons of registration in Australia, what our system means for how we can advertise Chinese medicine - essentially speak about how we use it, and WHY are we agreeing for Chinese medicine to be measured and evaluated with a different system of medicine -the biomedical model. Happy to have more of a chat about this on the channel in future episodes, as mentioned in the episode, email below.

Can Acupuncture improve IVF success? Talking research with Amy Forth, Acupuncturist & Researcher S3 Ep6
Is Acupuncture effective in helping fertility, particularly when undergoing an IVF cycle? What does the current research say AND how do we interpret that data? It can be super confusing, even for practitioners who are not academics or researchers to understand how it all fits in the current body of evidence. Amy Forth, an expert on this topic, helps us understand the research, the current evidence and unpacks it to an easy level.
If you are curios about the use of Acupuncture as part of supporting an IVF cycle, this episode is one that’s not to me missed, as we chat about what kinds of studies have been done, the number of participants (why that's important) the kind of control groups used (and we explain what that means) and what is “sham acupuncture” and what often happens to research results when different controls or placebos are used.
Amy also discusses how the research helps us to understand “therapeutic dose” of acupuncture which is something we don’t talk about enough - EG - how many treatments should a person have and does it make a difference? This is all based on the current research. If you are listening only, please check out the video version of this interview where all the research discussed has screen-shots /PowerPoint slides embedded which can help you guide along the way.
