Kevin is a young boy fascinated by history, particularly that of Ancient Greece. His parents ignore his activities, having become obsessed with buying the latest household gadgets. One night, as Kevin is sleeping, an armoured knight on a horse bursts out of his wardrobe. Kevin hides under the covers as the knight rides off into a forest where his bedroom wall was; when Kevin looks again, the room is back to normal and he finds one of his photos on the wall similar to the forest he saw. The next night he prepares a satchel with supplies and a Polaroid camera but is surprised when six dwarfs spill out of the wardrobe. Kevin quickly learns the group has stolen a map and is looking for an exit from his room before they are discovered. They find that the bedroom wall leads to a portal. Kevin is hesitant to join until the apparition of a floating, menacing head—the Supreme Being—appears behind them, demanding the return of the map. Kevin and the dwarves find an empty void at the end of the hallway.

They land in Italy during the Battle of Castiglione. As they recover, Kevin learns that Randall is the lead dwarf of the group, which also includes Fidgit, Strutter, Og, Wally, and Vermin. They were once employed by the Supreme Being to repair holes in the spacetime fabric, but realised the potential to use the map that identifies these holes to steal riches and escape via time/space travel. With Kevin's help, they visit several locations in spacetime and meet figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Robin Hood. Kevin uses his camera to document their visits. However, they are unaware that their activities are being monitored by Evil, a malevolent being who is able to manipulate reality and is attempting to acquire the map.

Kevin becomes separated from the group and ends up in Mycenaean Greece, meeting King Agamemnon. After Kevin inadvertently helps Agamemnon kill a Minotaur,[4] the king adopts him. Randall and the others soon locate Kevin and abduct him, much to his resentment, and escape through another hole, arriving on the RMS Titanic. After it sinks, they tread water while arguing with each other. Evil manipulates the group and transports them to his realm, the Time of Legends. After surviving encounters with ogres and a giant, Kevin and the dwarfs locate the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness and are led to believe that "The Most Fabulous Object in the World" awaits them, luring them into Evil's trap. Evil takes the map and locks the group in a cage over a bottomless pit. While looking through the Polaroids he took, Kevin finds one that includes the map, and the group realises that there is a hole near them. They escape from the cage and Kevin distracts their pursuers while the others go through the hole.

Evil confronts Kevin and takes the map from him. The dwarfs return with various warriors and fighting machines from across time, but Evil effortlessly and comically defeats them all. As Kevin and the dwarfs cower, Evil prepares to unleash his ultimate power. Suddenly, he is engulfed in flames and burned into charcoal; from the smoke, a besuited elderly man emerges, revealed as the Supreme Being. He reveals that he allowed the dwarfs to borrow his map and the whole adventure had been a test. He orders the dwarfs to collect the pieces of concentrated Evil, warning that they can be deadly if not contained. After recovering the map he allows the dwarfs to rejoin him in his creation duties. The Supreme Being disappears with the dwarfs, leaving Kevin behind as a missed piece of Evil begins to smoulder.

Kevin awakes in his bedroom to find it filled with smoke. Firefighters break down the door and rescue him as they put out a fire in his house. One of the firemen finds that his parents' new toaster oven caused the fire. As Kevin recovers, he finds one of the firemen resembles Agamemnon and discovers that he still has the photos from his adventure. Kevin's parents discover a smouldering rock in the toaster oven. Recognising it as a piece of Evil, Kevin warns them not to touch it, but they ignore him, do so and explode, leaving only their shoes. As the Agamemnon-firefighter winks at the boy before leaving, Kevin approaches the smoking shoes and is seen from above as his figure grows smaller, revealing the planet and then outer space, before being rolled up in the map by the Supreme Being.

Major John Skokes has been captured and imprisoned by enemy aliens. He finds he is not alone in his cell, however, but with a cadet, Bree Tristan, from the Europa base. She believes three months have gone by since her imprisonment and she has a skin graft on her arm which she believes is the aliens' attempt to transform her into one of them. Skokes believes the war is over for them and their only job now is to find away to escape. As the aliens continue their experiments on Bree, the two prisoners develop a tenderness for one another. When they realize their attempts at escape are futile, John gives her hope for the future of mankind, which she desperately wants to hear.

Frank (William H. Macy) goes to the bar, where he seizes the opportunity to get a free drink. However, he is punched by Eddie (Joel Murray), who blames Frank for Ian (Cameron Monaghan) getting oral sex from Karen (Laura Slade Wiggins). When Frank returns home, he suddenly hits Ian in the nose, prompting Steve (Justin Chatwin) to scold him; Fiona (Emmy Rossum) is forced to ask Steve to leave before the situation worsens.

The following day, Frank goes missing. Fiona and her siblings express concern over Frank's whereabouts as it is the last Friday of the month, which is when Frank prepares to get his disability checks. Frank wakes up in Toronto and is subsequently arrested for not carrying a passport. As Fiona and her siblings debate on what to do as getting him a passport will take months, Steve reveals that he smuggled Frank into Canada while stealing a car, feeling he could finally solve their family issues. Fiona slaps him and forces him to find a way to bring him back. Steve gets an RV, which includes a secret smuggling compartment for Frank. Meanwhile, local cop Tony Markovich (Tyler Jacob Moore) asks Fiona out on a date, which she considers. After Steve successfully smuggles Frank back into Chicago, Fiona breaks up with him. He tries to win her over by getting her a new car, but she tells him she will return the money he paid for the washing machine.

Feeling unwanted by his family, Frank decides to move out of the house, but is unable to find a new home. He runs into Eddie at the bar, who apologizes for his actions and buys him a beer. Eddie reveals that he has left Karen and her agoraphobic mother Sheila (Joan Cusack), who is mentally ill and receives disability benefits from the welfare state. Intrigued, Frank visits Sheila and attempts to manipulate her into letting him stay at her house. He eventually convinces Sheila to have sex, but is quickly taken aback by her dominatrix behavior. The next morning, Karen is dismayed to learn that Frank has officially moved into their home.

Frank's father arrives at the Gallagher's, much to his displeasure, whilst Veronica feels threatened by Karen's presence when she begins working at the pub.

Shada is a story from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Written by the series' script editor Douglas Adams, it was intended as the final serial of the 1979–80 season (season 17) but was never originally completed, owing to strike action at the BBC during studio recording. Entering production as a six-part story (6 x 25-minute episodes) in 1979, plans were later revised for the story to be broadcast as a four-part story (4 x 25-minute episodes) in 1980. Ultimately however, the story was never completed in either format.

The BBC released a completed version of Shada in 2017, with missing dialogue newly recorded by the original cast, using the same audio equipment employed in the initial shoot, and animated by the team that undertook the reconstruction of the 1966 serial The Power of the Daleks.[2][3] This version was released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2017, and finally broadcast on television as a feature length TV movie – which was titled The Lost Episode rather than Shada – in 2018.

A new version with enhanced animation and split into six episodes was released on 20 December 2021, as part of a Season 17 Blu-ray boxset.[4][5]

Previous attempts to present the story include a narrated reconstruction for BBC Video; a re-imagined audio play by Big Finish Productions, also offered with basic Flash imagery on BBCi and the BBC's Doctor Who website; and a novelisation by Gareth Roberts, based on the latest shooting scripts, with the author's own additions.[6]

A young woman named Michelle leaves her apartment in New Orleans after having an argument with her fiancé, Ben. That night, while driving through rural Louisiana, she hears news reports of blackouts in several major cities. Suddenly, Michelle's car is struck off the road, knocking her unconscious. Awakening with an injured leg, Michelle finds she's chained in a bunker. Her captor, an older man named Howard, unchains her and explains he captured her to save her life; there has been an attack that left the air outside poisoned.

Howard gives Michelle a tour of his bunker, which also houses his construction assistant, a younger man named Emmett. Through a viewport, Howard shows her two decayed pigs as evidence of the fallout. However, Michelle sees Howard's truck and recalls it striking her car. She privately relays this to Emmett, who dismisses it, saying he came to the bunker voluntarily after witnessing the attack. During dinner, Howard shows flashes of jealousy, and little tolerance for Emmett. Michelle attempts to escape, injuring Howard, but witnesses a woman covered with lesions outside, who ends up bashing her head on the door. Horrified, Michelle retreats, and Howard claims that he accidentally struck Michelle's car in a panic trying to reach the bunker. Convinced into trusting him, Michelle stitches a cut she caused Howard.

Over the next few days, the trio begins to adapt to life underground, and Howard opens up about his late daughter. Soon the air ventilation system fails after something loud passes overhead. Howard sends Michelle through a small duct to reactivate it. In the control room, she finds a padlocked skylight with "HELP" scratched on the inside, and an earring she saw in a picture of Howard's daughter. Michelle shares this with Emmett, who recognizes the girl in the picture as a local girl who disappeared two years earlier; it's further revealed that Howard's actual daughter left with his wife. Deciding to seek help, Michelle begins to fashion a makeshift hazmat suit to venture outside.

Howard soon finds the tools Michelle and Emmett were using, and threatens to immerse them both in perchloric acid. When Emmett claims responsibility, Howard shoots and kills him, telling a shocked Michelle that now they can be a family of two. Michelle secretly finishes the suit while Howard cleans up. When Howard discovers this, Michelle flees and is able to upend the barrel of acid onto him, disfiguring him and starting a fire. Leaving Howard to his fate, Michelle dons the suit and escapes. Michelle sees birds outside, realizing there's no fallout. She removes her mask and notices a biomechanical alien craft in the distance, which notices her when the bunker explodes from the fire.

The craft attacks Michelle, discharging a green gas, which she overcomes with her mask. Michelle is attacked by a quadrupedal creature and takes shelter in Howard's truck. The craft's tentacles lift the truck to reach Michelle, but she destroys it with a Molotov cocktail. Escaping in the woman's car, Michelle hears a broadcast about the battle with the invaders; survivors are instructed to seek safety in Baton Rouge, while help is requested from anyone with medical or combat training in Houston. Michelle heads for Houston while a larger alien craft is revealed, silhouetted by lightning.

In 1969 Pasadena, a Hispanic couple seek help from young medium Shaun San Dena, saying their son Juan is ill and hears evil voices after stealing a silver necklace from a Gypsy's wagon, despite his attempts to return it. San Dena prepares a séance, but an unseen force attacks them and fatally drags Juan to Hell, and he is never seen again after this. San Dena vows to fight the demon again one day.

In present-day Los Angeles, bank loan officer Christine Brown vies for a promotion to assistant branch manager with her co-worker, Stu Rubin. Her boss, Jim Jacks, advises her to demonstrate tough decision-making. Sylvia Ganush, an elderly and disheveled European Roma woman, asks for a third extension on her mortgage. However, Christine denies her request. After this, Ganush cries and begs not to have her house repossessed. Security guards arrive and she leaves, angrily accusing Christine of shaming her. In the parking lot, Ganush ambushes and violently attacks Christine. After a long struggle, Ganush rips a button from Christine's coat and curses it. Later, Christine and her boyfriend Clay Dalton visit fortune teller Rham Jas, who tells Christine a dark spirit is haunting her. At home, the entity begins to violently attack Christine. At work, she hallucinates about Ganush and bleeds profusely from her nose while spewing blood on Jacks. As Christine leaves, Stu steals a file that is on her desk.

Christine decides to go beg Ganush for forgiveness, but she discovers that she has recently died. After causing a scene at her funeral, Ganush's granddaughter warns her that she deserves everything that she is about to get. Christine returns to Jas, who explains that as long as she owns the cursed button, a powerful demon known as the Lamia will torment her for three days before literally dragging her to Hell. However, he suggests that a sacrifice may appease it. Christine reluctantly decides to sacrifice her kitten before meeting Clay's classist parents at their house for dinner, during which grotesque hallucinations torment her again, such as seeing the Gypsy’s eye in her slice of harvest cake.

Christine returns to Jas, who introduces her to San Dena for a fee of $10,000. They prepare a séance to trap Lamia in a goat and kill the goat to destroy it. However, the Lamia possesses her and then her assistant, who vomits up the corpse of Christine's cat, saying it wants her soul. San Dena manages to successfully banish the Lamia from the séance, but dies afterwards. With no other options Jas seals the button in an envelope and tells Christine that she can only remove the curse by giving the button to someone else. She attempts to give the envelope at a diner: to a tearful Stu (whom she tries to blackmail into accepting it) and to an ailing, married elderly woman; bothered by her conscience, she doesn’t do either. When Jas tells her she can give the curse to the dead she digs up Ganush's grave and shoves the envelope into her mouth to give her the curse. Christine returns home and prepares to meet Clay at Los Angeles Union Station for a weekend trip. Jacks notifies her of the promotion after Stu confessed to stealing her file and was fired.

At the station, Clay, who is hoping to propose to Christine, hands her the envelope with her missing button he found in his car, unaware of its significance. She realizes that she accidentally gave the wrong envelope to Ganush, which means the curse was never lifted. Horrified, Christine backs away and falls onto the tracks, where demonic hands come out and drag her down. A train speeds through, and Clay helplessly looks on as Christine is fatally dragged down to Hell.
