Charles Courtenay is the 19th Earl of Devon. He sits as an elected hereditary member of the House of Lords and is a partner in the law firm Michelmores, focusing on intellectual property and other complex disputes. In Parliament, Charlie contributed to the Agriculture Act 2020 and the Environment Act 2021, which restructured the nation's relationship with the nature, while at Michelmores he is spearheads the firm's Sustainable Economy work.  Charlie also owns and operates the Powderham Estate, near Exeter in Devon, a 700 year old family owned social enterprise, focused on heritage, sustainable land management and agriculture. In the podcast we talk about what it means to be an Earl, but more importantly agricultural practices and climate change and how we can productively protect ecosystems for generations to come.

Terry Tamminen is President and CEO of AltaSea. AltaSea accelerates technologies and inspires the next generation for a more sustainable ocean. Terry has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative environmental solutions. Among other things Terry led California’s EPA and was Cabinet Secretary for Governor Schwarzenegger when key climate change legislation was passed. Hear Terry talk about his role in shaping solutions, some ideas for the near term in security a positive future, and why he writes a daily Haiku.

As a former Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, Katherine was instrumental in moving the Army to recognize the benefits of renewables and efficiency for resilience, cost savings and the environment. She is currently the Director of Special Projects for Green Business Certifications Inc, which independently recognizes excellence in resilient buildings and power infrastructure. In her spare time she volunteers as a Director of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning, and is an Advisor with MKAdvisors.

Johanna Stoberock is the author of the novels Pigs (Red Hen Press) and City of Ghosts (W.W. Norton). About Pigs: Four children live on an island that is the repository for all the  world’s garbage. Garbage arrives, the children sort it, and then they  feed it to a herd of pigs. The pigs are beautiful, but fierce, with  sharp teeth and insatiable appetites, and they eat anything. When a boy  washes ashore in a barrel, the children must decide what to do with  him—is he more of the world’s detritus, meant to be fed to the pigs, or  is he one of them? The novel explores questions about community,  environmental responsibility, and the possibility of innocence. 

In this episode we discuss the novel, where the ideas came from and what they mean for her and what we can all do the address climate change.
