A Conversation with Sonia Livingstone on the Mediation of Everything

A Conversation with Sonia Livingstone on the Mediation of Everything

This is the podcast version of my conversation, recorded in the morning of Friday March 19 (video available on YouTube, search for #deuzevlog), with Sonia Livingstone, professor of Social Psychology and former head of the Department of Media and Communications of the LSE.

We discuss her work toward the adoption of General Comment No.25 by the United Nations, which sets out how the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child applies in the digital environment, her consistent focus on what changes in society, culture and the media mean for people who are simply trying to 'make it work' at home, at school, and at work, recent books such as The Class and Parenting for a Digital Future, and even go back to her fabulous doctoral thesis of 1987 on the "Social Knowledge and Programme Structure in Representations of Television Characters" and her argument, that television viewers need to be taken seriously.

As always, it was a privilege, and so much fun!

On the Ethics of Listening across Difference (with Herman Wasserman)

On the Ethics of Listening across Difference (with Herman Wasserman)

In the ongoing series of interviews with scholars I am a fan of a conversation with Herman Wasserman, Professor of Media Studies at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. We discuss his new book with Oxford University Press, titled The Ethics of Engagement (out in 2021), as well as how his international academic career evolved from our shared background as journalists working in South Africa in the mid-1990s, around the time Nelson Mandela became President and the rugby team won the World Cup...  Herman specifically addresses what current debates about diversity, decolonization and inclusion mean, how this can be considered from a distinct African context, and how his commitment to this issues has led him all over the globe.  This conversation is also available as a vlog on YouTube (#deuzevlog). Thanks for listening! Please like and follow the series, and share with your friends, students and colleagues. Recorded with Zoom and (slightly) edited with iMovie on February 15, 2021. In this installment of my combined vlog/podcast series of conversations with scholars whose publications inspire and inform my work, a panel discussion with three fabulous colleagues: Maria Norbäck (University of Gothenburg), Errol Salamon (University of Huddersfield), and Erwin van 't Hof (University of Amsterdam). All are researching the working lives of media workers generally, and freelance journalists in particular.

The conversation was recorded on November 2, 2020 and is available in YouTube as a #Deuzevlog.

Production Studies with Vicki Mayer

Production Studies with Vicki Mayer

In this series of interviews with scholars I am a fan of a conversation with Vicky Mayer, Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives and Curriculum and Professor in the Department of Communication of Tulane University, USA. Before this, she held the Louise and Leonard Riggio Professorship (2014-2019).

In our seminar we discuss the various ways in which (media) production studies offers us valuable insights in the way media work, and how media work takes place.

On Media (Studies) and Everyday Life

On Media (Studies) and Everyday Life

In this series of interviews with scholars I am a fan of a conversation with Stina Bengtsson, professor of Media and Communication Studies at  Södertörn University (Sweden), and Karin Fast, Associate Professor in  Media and Communication Studies at Karlstad University (Sweden), and  researcher at the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the  University of Oslo (Norway).

We discuss their important work on media and everyday life, and the  unique (and perhaps impossible) role of media scholarship in a time of  pervasive and ubiquitous media. This conversation is also inspired by their joint publication (in 2020) of the research paper "Media and basic  desires: An approach to measuring the mediatization of daily human life" (also co-authored with André Jansson and Johan Lindell) in the  academic journal Communications.

As Stina beautifully articulates near the end of our conversation: the coronavirus crisis offers an opportunity to collectively look at and study the media - not because media have broken down, but because  everything else has broken down...

This podcast is based on the vlog version, recorded October 11, 2020, which is available on YouTube (as part of the #deuzevlog series of interviews with media scholars). Thanks for listening! Please like and subscribe, and share with your friends, students and colleagues.

Journalism and Emotions

Journalism and Emotions

This is the podcast version of a vlog (available on YouTube, recorded July 8, 2020), featuring a seminar on the various roles emotions play in journalism, featuring Karin Wahl-Jorgensen (Cardiff University), Johana Kotišová (Masaryk University) and Charlie Beckett (POLIS@LSE), hosted by Mark Deuze (University of Amsterdam).

We specifically discuss emotional literacy as a key competence for journalists, how emotional authenticity and storytelling can establish trust and compassion between journalists and audiences, and how the still dominant emotional regime and culture of journalism makes emotions at time difficult to process and (especially) express as a professional.
