187. Anglo-Powhatan Wars
Discovery that Virginia was the perfect environment to cultivate tobacco led to Jamestown's success… and to a great deal of conflict between the English and the natives. Relations between the local natives and colonists became increasingly uncomfortable as more white settlers arrived in Virginia. The natives moved farther inland to distance themselves from the English, but more Europeans kept arriving. Both sides were guilty of straining the relationship. The English stole corn and other food supplies and the natives ambushed the English for their tools and weapons. Finally, the conflict erupted in the winter of 1610.

186. Indentured Servants

185. Starving Time 1609-10
The original Jamestown colonists had never intended to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local natives to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England. Lack of access to fresh water and a severe drought crippled the limited agricultural production of the Virginia colonists. Combined with the lack of trade with the Native Americans and the failure of supply ships, the colony found itself with far too little food for the upcoming winter.

184. Virginia Tobacco
The capitalists who funded the establishment of the Virginia colony may have been concerned with the glory of England and the spreading of the Anglican religion to the natives, but above all, they demanded that the new enterprise turn a profit. Tobacco eventually proved to be the economic base for Virginia for the next two centuries.

183. Tidewater Settlement
Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized.

175. Legacy of the King James Bible
The Legacy of the King James Version of the Bible is broad and encompassing, reaching the shores of North America from the British Isles from the early 17th century onwards. JWV, One of our regular Canadian viewers of the video edition of this series is familiar with the book, for, when growing up in England she remembers studying the King James Bible as a Methodist. She brought her beloved copy of the Authorized Version to North America when she immigrated at age 11 and still reads from it daily. Her favorite passage is Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer which she often recites to herself.

174. Authorized Translation
The original printing of the Authorized Version of the King James Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, in 1611 as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. The Authorized Version's written style is an important part of its influence on English, and its spread throughout North America.

173. Making of the King James Bible
The task of translating the Bible into English was undertaken by a group of scholars approved by King James the First. All were members of the Church of England and most were clergy. The scholars worked in six committees, two based in each of the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Westminster. The committees included high churchmen, as well as scholars with Puritan sympathies—a spirit found in some of North America's first colonists.

Revered as a translator of the Bible into English (1526), William Tyndale (1494-1536) was a biblical scholar and linguist who became a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation in the years leading up to his execution for heresy. 171. Hampton Court Conference
In 1604, King James convened the Hampton Court Conference, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to the problems of the earlier translations perceived by the Puritans, an orthodox faction of the Church of England. One cannot underestimate the spiritual, cultural, political, and literary importance and influence of the Authorized Version's pre-eminence in the English-speaking world, including vast parts of North America.

169. Guy Fawkes 1605 Bonfire Night
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November; Gunpowder, treason and plot; I see no reason why gunpowder, treason; should ever be forgot." Every year, people across the United Kingdom light fireworks and bonfires to commemorate the events of November 5th, 1605. Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night celebrates the capture of Fawkes (1570-1606), who was apprehended under the British Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder, fuses and matches, planning to blow up King James I and his entire Parliament, which would have severely altered the course of British North America.
