Episode 219: THE FUTURE OF CRYPTO

Episode 219: THE FUTURE OF CRYPTO

Mastercard will expand its cryptocurrency payment card program by seeking more partnerships with crypto firms, the company's head of crypto and blockchain said, even as the sector comes under closer scrutiny from regulators and banks grow wary.

U.S.-based crypto trading firm Coinbase is opening a derivatives exchange in Bermuda as part of an international expansion plan that comes as the publicly traded firm faces regulatory headwinds at home. Called Coinbase International Exchange, the new facility will initially let traders bet on the price of bitcoin and ether via perpetual futures contracts with up to five times leverage and all trades will settle in the stablecoin USDC. In a blog post Coinbase said trading has begun.

Episode 218: Banking Crisis

Episode 218: Banking Crisis

The banking system is experiencing an change similar to 2008. There have in recent days been a few banks including Silicone Valley Bank, and now First Republic Bank that have collapsed. Investors have gone and taken large amounts of there money out of these banks but some lost money due to having more than the $250,000 covered by Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

The Fed, which is SVB’s primary regulator, took responsibility for its own lapses, saying that supervisors “did not fully appreciate the extent of the vulnerabilities as Silicon Valley Bank grew in size and complexity” and “did not take sufficient steps” to ensure that SVB address its problems quickly.

Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse on March 10 — followed two days later by that of Signature Bank — sent shock waves through the global banking system. Regional banks have been hit especially hard, and investors are still bracing for pain six weeks later as First Republic Bank teeters on the edge.

Episode 217: Penny Stock Watchlist

Episode 217: Penny Stock Watchlist

Penny stocks are stocks that trade for a low price, usually less than $5 per share, and are often issued by small companies with a low market capitalization. These stocks are generally considered to be high-risk investments because they are less established and less liquid than larger, more established companies.

While some investors may be attracted to penny stocks because of their potential for high returns, it's important to understand that they also carry a higher risk of fraud, manipulation, and volatility. It's crucial to thoroughly research any company before investing in their stock, including their financials, management team, and industry trends.

Investing in penny stocks should only be done with money that you can afford to lose, as the risk of loss is high. If you're interested in investing in penny stocks, it's important to consult with a financial advisor and do your own research to make informed decisions.

The penny stocks that I am watching this week are $KPRX/$RVPH/$AGEN

Episode 214: Student Loan Forgiveness

Episode 214: Student Loan Forgiveness

Increasingly, borrowers are struggling under the weight of a growing tab. As of the latest tally, borrowers owe a combined $1.7 trillion. For those who start college but never finish, managing such a hefty amount of debt is especially difficult. The White House has insisted that it’s acting within the law, noting that the Heroes Act of 2003 grants the U.S. education secretary the authority to make changes to the federal student loan system during national emergencies. The nation has been operating under an emergency declaration since March 2020 because of the Covid pandemic.

Although college enrollment declines have leveled off overall, the number of students who started college but then withdrew rose 3.6% in the 2020-21 academic year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. There are now more than 40 million students who are currently unenrolled.Among students who put their education on hold, most said it was due to a loss of motivation or a life change, according to a report by education lender Sallie Mae. Others cite financial concerns, followed by mental health challenges.

Episode 212: TESLA EARNINGS RECAP

Episode 212: TESLA EARNINGS RECAP

Tesla ($TSLA) stock is slipping after the bell as the electric-vehicle maker reported slight revenue and profit misses and gross margin that dipped below 20% to 19.3% as the cost of recent price cuts hit profitability. For the quarter, Tesla reported Q1 revenue of $23.33 billion, slightly below Street estimates of $23.35 billion, with Q1 adjusted EPS coming in at $0.85, below Street estimates of $0.86. That revenue figure for Q1 represents a slight dip from the $24.32 billion Tesla reported in Q4, but still 24% higher than a year ago. Looking ahead, Tesla still sees 2023 global production of 1.8 million vehicles, with its long-term delivery growth rate staying at 50%. Tesla also said Cybertruck production is on track to begin later this year at Giga Austin, with the company producing "Alpha," or early test versions, of the vehicle.

Tesla instituted a number of price cuts in the U.S., Asia, and some European markets in Q1 of this year. Gross margins dipping to 19.3% may reflect the costs of those price cuts. Tesla slashed prices of its Model 3 and Model Y EVs yet again, in fact bringing one of them below $40,000.The most recent price cut was the sixth one this year by Tesla in the U.S., saw each version of the Model Y SUV slashed by $3,000 each, with the Model 3 RWD (rear-wheel drive) dropping by $2,000 to $39,990. The base Model Y, known as the AWD or all-wheel drive version, now starts at $46,990.

Episode 211: What are CBDCs?

Episode 211: What are CBDCs?

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are the digital form of a government-issued currency that isn’t pegged to a physical commodity. They are issued by central banks, whose role is to support financial services for a nation’s government and its commercial-banking system, set monetary policy, and issue currency. Examples of central banks include the US Federal Reserve System, the Bank of Japan, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), and Germany’s Deutsche Bundesbank.

CBDCs are similar to—but not the same as—stablecoins. Stablecoins are a specific type of private, stabilized cryptocurrency pegged to another currency, commodity, or financial instrument with the goal of maintaining a relatively stable value over time. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are decentralized, CBDCs are state issued and operated.Advocates of digital finance believe that new digital tools, among them CBDCs, can address many issues related to efficiency, security, and access:

Reduced costs. Financial-service providers stand to save $400 billion annually in direct costs by shifting spending away from physical infrastructure and toward digital finance. But reduced costs must be measured against the significant investments in new technology that CBDCs will require.Increased speed. CBDCs could improve the speed and efficiency of many countries’ electronic payment systems. (This argument is becoming less compelling, as we’ll see below.)Greater access for those without bank accounts.

Just under 5 percent of US adults don’t have bank accounts; in 2016, there were 1.6 billion unbanked people around the world. CBDCs accessible through mobile devices could potentially increase financial inclusion. And for providers of digital financial services, mobile money presents a gateway into untouched markets.

However, adoption isn’t a guarantee; many underbanked people may favor the total anonymity afforded by cash. Heightened security. Deploying a regulated digital currency accessible via mobile devices could potentially enhance payment security by ensuring that a transaction is finalized and unalterable—even without a formal bank account—reducing the chances of fraud. Regulated use of private-key cryptography could enable users to “sign” transactions digitally, reducing the wait time for a transaction to be irreversibly final and giving the parties greater peace of mind. ☕Get your coffee today at www.duckrivercoffee.com 📚Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MarketMarauders 📚Books: https://www.amazon.com/sk=reginald+seay&crid=XNP2FB40Q3TH&sprefix=reginald+seay%2Caps%2C232&ref=nb_sb_noss 📚 Course: https://market-marauders-complete-guides.teachable.com/p/the-complete-guide-to-cryptocurrency 📚Website: www.marketmarauders.net 🦩Twitter: @yourequest 😎Instagram: market_marauders 📧Email: reg24k@gmail.com 🚧 DISCLAIMER🚧 I am not a qualified licensed investment advisor. Episode 210: Financial Recession Prep

Episode 210: Financial Recession Prep

The financial recession is on our heels. In this episode I will be outlining ways you can combat the recession. The first was is through REITs. A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a company that owns, operates, or finances income-generating real estate. Modeled after mutual funds, REITs pool the capital of numerous investors. This makes it possible for individual investors to earn dividends from real estate investments—without having to buy, manage, or finance any properties themselves.

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a type of pooled investment security that operates much like a mutual fund. Typically, ETFs will track a particular index, sector, commodity, or other assets, but unlike mutual funds, ETFs can be purchased or sold on a stock exchange the same way that a regular stock can. An ETF can be structured to track anything from the price of an individual commodity to a large and diverse collection of securities. ETFs can even be structured to track specific investment strategies.

A commodity is a basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other goods of the same type. Commodities are most often used as inputs in the production of other goods or services. A commodity thus usually refers to a raw material used to manufacture finished goods. A product, on the other hand, is the finished good sold to consumers.

The protocol will replace the 50-year-old SWIFT financial messaging system, which banks and other financial institutions use to facilitate global payments. The standard addresses the need of financial services organizations looking to create a globally accepted messaging language. Episode 206: Dawn of AI

Episode 206: Dawn of AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the fastest-growing technologies in the world today, and for good reason. AI has the potential to revolutionize every industry and aspect of our lives, from healthcare to finance to transportation and more. As an advertiser, I would like to highlight some of the key factors driving the growth of AI and its immense potential for the future. First and foremost, the explosion of data is a major factor driving the growth of AI. With the rise of the internet, social media, and other digital technologies, we are generating more data than ever before. AI algorithms are designed to analyze and make sense of large volumes of data quickly and accurately, making them essential tools for many businesses and organizations. Another factor driving the growth of AI is the increasing availability of computing power. Thanks to advancements in hardware and cloud computing, AI algorithms can now be run on much larger data sets and in real-time, enabling more accurate predictions and faster decision-making. Advancements in natural language processing and computer vision are also fueling the growth of AI. With the ability to analyze and understand human language and images, AI algorithms are becoming more useful for a wider range of applications, such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and image recognition software. The potential cost savings and efficiency gains associated with AI are driving many businesses to invest in the technology. By automating routine tasks and identifying new opportunities for growth and optimization, AI can help companies operate more efficiently and effectively. In conclusion, the growth of AI is being driven by a combination of factors, including the explosion of data, increasing computing power, advancements in natural language processing and computer vision, and the potential for cost savings and efficiency gains. As advertisers, it is essential that we stay up-to-date on these trends and work with our clients to develop AI strategies that can help them stay competitive in today's rapidly evolving business environment.

Episode 205: New EV Tax Credit Requirements

Episode 205: New EV Tax Credit Requirements

The Inflation Reduction Act, which President Joe Biden signed in August, set various manufacturing requirements for new all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to be able to qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit. As of Aug. 17, for example, final assembly of the car had to take place in North America. The final two requirements — which apply to the sourcing of car battery components and critical minerals — will kick in on April 18 and phase in over a few years, according to the Treasury Department.

Consumers can consult an IRS list to verify which used vehicles qualify.

Here are some of the major criteria for cars and consumers to qualify for the $4000 EV tax credit :

The car must be purchased from a licensed dealer.

The car’s model year must be at least 2 years old.

The sale price must be $25,000 or less.

It’s only available to individuals, not businesses.

Buyers are ineligible for a credit if their annual income exceeds certain thresholds: $75,000 for singles, $112,500 for heads of household and $150,000 for married couples filing a joint tax return. Buyers assess income for the year in which they acquired the car or the prior year, whichever is less. (Income is measured as “modified adjusted gross income.” You can consult these FAQs to determine how to calculate modified AGI.)

Tesla will open a new Megafactory in Shanghai that is capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks a year, the company announced in a tweet Sunday.

A Megapack is a very large battery for utilities that stores energy, helps stabilize the power grid and prevents outages. These batteries enable grid operators to move extra capacity between counties or states and ensure that power from intermittent sources can be stored and used when demand is higher, or when there are unplanned outages in a transmission network.

Back in January, Apple first teased an India expansion by posting a dozen Apple store roles for "various locations within India" on the Careers section of its website. Some reported that certain posts on LinkedIn received more than 200 applications within 24 hours of appearing online.

The plan to come to India had been in the works since at least 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic. Apple has also had to navigate stringent Indian laws for foreign companies who operate in the country — one requirement was that at least 30% of the products sold in each store come from India.

Episode 202: Student Loan Relief

Episode 202: Student Loan Relief

In 2022, the average student loan debt for federal loans was $37,358. That's approximately $1.6 trillion of outstanding debt divided by a total of 43.4 million borrowers. However, what individual borrowers owe varies considerably. Debt differs according to borrower demographics, including educational attainment and location. The U.S. Department of Education has launched its official application for student loan forgiveness, meaning tens of millions of Americans can now request the financial relief. The launch follows a short beta test, during which time the Department of Education offered on and off access to the form while it tested the site. Borrowers could apply for forgiveness in those windows when the portal was open. To get verified you will need your full name and date of birth, you’ll also have to provide your Social Security number.

Episode 200: Rivian Recall, Nasdaq at 2 year Lows

Shares of Rivian Automotive fell today after the EV maker said late Friday that it is recalling more than 12,000 vehicles – nearly every EV it has made to date – to double-check that a fastener in the vehicles’ steering assembly was properly tightened. After falling more than 10% , Rivian’s stock ended the session down about 7%. The recall includes every Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV made through late September, as well as some of the EDV delivery vans the company produced for Amazon — 12,212 vehicles in all — though the company estimates that only about 1% of those have the defect. Through the end of September, Rivian had built about 15,300 vehicles since starting production in the fall of 2021.

Palantir’s revenue for the quarter increased 26% year over year, and its commercial revenue grew 46%. The software company, which is known for its work with the government, said its commercial customer count increased 250% year over year, growing from 34 customers to 119. Nvidia shares dipped 8% today after the company released preliminary earnings that show second-quarter revenue of $6.7 billion, well below its initial outlook of $8.1 billion. Nvidia said the shortfall primarily reflects weaker-than-forecast gaming revenue, which is down 44% sequentially and 33% from the prior year. Nvidia said the report is “primarily attributable to lower sell-in of Gaming products reflecting a reduction in channel partner sales likely due to macroeconomic headwinds.” There are other companies that are going to be giving earnings this week to watch including The Walt Disney Company, Coindesk, Roblox, and Plug Power.

Episode 190: Fed Decision July 2022

Episode 190: Fed Decision July 2022

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday enacted its second consecutive 0.75 percentage point interest rate increase as it seeks to tamp down runaway inflation without creating a recession. In taking the benchmark overnight borrowing rate up to a range of 2.25%-2.5%, the moves in June and July represent the most stringent consecutive action since the Fed began using the overnight funds rate as the principal tool of monetary policy in the early 1990s. While the fed funds rate most directly impacts what banks charge each other for short-term loans, it feeds into a multitude of consumer products such as adjustable mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. The increase takes the funds rate to its highest level since December 2018. Facebook parent Meta lost $2.81 billion on $452 million in revenue from its virtual reality division, Reality Labs, during the quarter ending in June as it forecast a second consecutive quarter of declining revenue on Wednesday. The substantial sum is the latest sign that CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Meta continues to spend heavily to pivot the social media giant to developing virtual reality and augmented reality products and the so-called “metaverse.” It’s a substantial but affordable expense to a company that earned $8.36 billion in operating income on $28.82 billion in total sales during the quarter.

Episode 189: NFL Plus, Walmart Earnings

Episode 189: NFL Plus, Walmart Earnings

The National Football League now has its own streaming service. The streaming service will be called NFL+ for $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year. The subscription will include all out-of-market preseason games, which was formerly only available with a subscription to NFL Game Pass for $99.99 per year. The NFL preseason kicks off Aug. 4 with the Jacksonville Jaguars facing the Las Vegas Raiders. Looking at the data, the picture is indeed nuanced. Nothing right now is screaming recession, though there is plenty of chatter. The jobs market is still pretty good, manufacturing is weakening but still expanding, and consumers still seem fairly flush with cash, if somewhat less willing to part with it these days. If nothing else, the economy stands at least a fair a chance of hitting the rule-of-thumb recession definition of two consecutive quarters with negative GDP readings. The first quarter saw a gross domestic product decline of 1.6% and an Atlanta Federal Reserve gauge is indicating the second quarter is on pace to hit the same number. Walmart cut its quarterly and full-year profit guidance, saying inflation is causing shoppers to spend more on necessities such as food and less on items like clothing and electronics. Walmart said it now anticipates adjusted earnings per share for the second quarter and full year to to decline around 8% to 9% and 11% to 13%, respectively. It had previously expected them to be flat to up slightly for the second quarter and to drop by about 1% for the full year.

Episode 188: Recession 2022

U.S. stock futures changed overnight, coming off a positive week for the major averages, as traders brace for the busiest week of corporate earnings, as well as insights into further interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. There are still more earnings to come this week as the market prepared for the results. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slid 45 points, or 0.14%. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.11% and Nasdaq 100 futures dipped 0.01%, respectively. On Friday, the major averages fell on the back of weaker-than-expected earnings from Snapchat ($SNAP) that sent tech shares tumbling. The Dow lost 137.61 points, or 0.43%. The S&P 500 declined 0.93% to 3,961.63, while the Nasdaq Composite traded 1.87% lower at 11,834.11. The World Health Organization has activated its highest alert level for the growing monkeypox outbreak, declaring the virus a public health emergency of international concern. The rare designation means the WHO now views the outbreak as a significant enough threat to global health that a coordinated international response is needed to prevent the virus from spreading further and potentially escalating into a pandemic. Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has cut roughly 880 corporate jobs in the United States. This is a trend that we are starting to see in the market as more companies begin to restructure and cut costs to prepare for a rough economic future ahead.

Episode 187: Is Crypto Mining Dead?

Crypto miners' share prices were up 9.6% between Wednesday and Thursday as bitcoin showed signs of a steady recovery, breaking over the $21,000 mark. Digihost Technology, TeraWulf and Marathon Digital led the pack with 26.6%, 18.94% and 17.62% increases respectively from Wednesday's open to Thursday's close. TeraWulf's run came as the company announced on Tuesday that it had added $50 million to a $123.5 million loan signed with Wilmington Trust to continue its growth. Investment bank D.A. Davidson last week slashed its expectation for computing power growth for the rest of the year to include only "current, funded orders," according to a note from senior research analyst Christopher Brendler. However, that still represents a 37% hashrate increase for last three quarters of 2022 for the five miners that Brendler analyzed, including Argo Blockchain, Hut 8 Mining, Core Scientific and Riot Blockchain.

The Saudis topped the volume charts in its debut weekend with $7.7 million in sales. The collection of 5,555 NFTs, whose artwork is a derivative of the famed CryptoPunks collectibles, were free to mint on July 9 and sold out within hours. The project’s floor price (which is the price of the cheapest edition currently for sale on the open market) is around 0.75 ether (roughly $867), after peaking at around 1.3 ETH (roughly $1,650) on Saturday.

More than 48 projects previously on the Terra network have begun migrating to Polygon almost two months after the Terra network collapsed following the implosion of terraUSD (UST).

Episode 186: Twitter Sues Elon Musk

Twitter (TWTR) filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk in the Delaware Court of Chancery after the billionaire said he was terminating his $44 billion deal to buy the company. Twitter stated that Musk, after entering a binding merger agreement, now “refuses to honor his obligations to Twitter and its stockholders because the deal he signed no longer serves his personal interests.” Twitter’s lawsuit was expected after Musk said late last week that he no longer plans to buy the social network, citing Twitter bots and claiming that the company didn’t give him the information he needed to evaluate the deal. The lawsuit filed on Tuesday marks the beginning of what could be a protracted legal battle as Twitter seeks to hold Musk to his deal to pay $54.20 per share for the company, and as Musk seeks to be let out of the agreement.

Norway’s Equinor is to acquire U.S.-based battery storage developer East Point Energy after signing an agreement to take a 100% stake in the company. Equinor, the major producer of oil and gas, said that Charlottesville-headquartered East Point Energy had a 4.1-gigawatt pipeline of “early to mid-stage battery storage projects focused on the US East Coast.”

Electric vehicle startup Canoo (GOEV) said Tuesday Walmart (WMT) has agreed to buy at least 4,500 of its upcoming electric delivery vans, in a significant win for the embattled vehicle maker.

Episode 185: GameStop NFT Marketplace Beta

Episode 185: GameStop NFT Marketplace Beta

GameStop today announced the long-awaited debut of its online marketplace for nonfungible tokens (NFT) in a bid to reinvent its business and cash in on consumer adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. The platform, which is now open to the public for beta testing, allows users to connect their own digital asset wallets, including the recently launched GameStop Wallet, the company said in a press release. They will then be able to buy, sell and trade NFTs of virtual goods. Over time, the marketplace will expand to offer Web3 gaming as well. The videogame retailer has struggled to stem losses in recent years, even as its sales of hardware, software and collectibles grow. In the three-month period ended April 30, GameStop reported a net loss of $157.9 million on revenue of $1.38 billion.

A year earlier the company posted a $66 million net loss on $1.27 billion in revenue. Americans are canceling deals to buy homes at the highest rate since the start of the 2020 pandemic. The number of sale agreements on existing homes canceled in June was just under 15% of all homes that went under contract, according to a new report from Redfin. That is the highest share since early 2020, when homebuying paused immediately, albeit briefly. Cancelations were at about 11% one year ago. Higher mortgage rates and surging inflation are causing many potential homebuyers to reconsider their purchases.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage started this year around 3% and then began rising steadily. It briefly shot above 6% in mid-June before settling in a narrow range around 5.75% now, according to an article from Mortgage News Daily. Europe has been under intense pressure in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with higher energy costs pushing up inflation across the region. This economic reality is unlikely to change anytime soon, with new forecasts pointing to an upward revision in consumer prices across the bloc. Back in May, the institution projected a growth rate of 2.7% for this year and 2.3% for next year, both for the EU and the euro area. In terms of inflation in the euro area, the commission said this would hit 6.1% in 2022, before falling to 2.7% in 2023.

Fidelity Digital Assets, a subsidiary of the financial services giant Fidelity Investments, plans to double its headcount this year to meet the growing demand for crypto trading from institutional investors, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. The business is planning to add 110 employees in tech roles, including engineers and developers with blockchain experience, Fidelity Digital Assets President Tom Jessop said, according to the report. The expanded headcount will be used to build infrastructure to offer trading of ether. Fidelity Digital Assets has hitherto offered only bitcoin (BTC) support. It aims to provide faster transactions and 24-hour trading support as well as compliance and tax-reporting tools. The One River Carbon Neutral Bitcoin Trust – a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposed by One River Asset Management – has been rejected by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The proposal to list on the NYSE Arca exchange lacks sufficient investor protections, the SEC said, which is similar verbiage used by the agency in denying other spot bitcoin (BTC) ETFs. One River submitted paperwork for the ETF in May 2021, and the SEC in March announced a delay in its decision. This particular spot ETF application differed from others in that One River pledged to buy and dispose of carbon credits to account for the emissions associated with the bitcoin in the fund.

It forecasts earnings per share, excluding the impact of any share repurchase activity, in a range of $3.38 to $3.68, up from a prior range of $3.15 to $3.50. Boeing has been developing its Starliner spacecraft under NASA’s Commercial Crew program, having won nearly $5 billion in contracts to build the capsule. The company competes under the program against Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which completed development of its Crew Dragon spacecraft and is now on its fourth operational human spaceflight for NASA. The aerospace giant was once seen as evenly matched with SpaceX in the race to launch NASA astronauts. Yet the delays to Starliner’s development have steadily set Boeing back, both in schedule and finances. Due to the fixed-price nature of its NASA contract, Boeing absorbed the cost of additional work on the capsule and has spent $595 million so far.

Episode 181: JetBlue $3.6B Offer, Hyundai Battery Plant, Boeing Starliner

Spirit Airlines CEO Ted Christie on Thursday laid bare the reasons his company rejected JetBlue Airways’ $3.6 billion offer to buy the ultra-low-cost carrier, and went so far as to suggest that the bid may have been intended to stop Spirit’s planned merger with Frontier Airlines. Airlines are looking to restructure and build for the summer. Hyundai Motor said on Sunday it plans to invest $5 billion in the U.S. by 2025 to further develop mobility technologies in areas like autonomous driving, robotics, and A.I. The investment comes alongside the automaker’s recent announcement of a plan to spend $5.54 billion to build its first dedicated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities in the U.S., located outside of Savannah, Georgia. That facility is expected to open during the first half of 2025 and is projected to have an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles. Hyundai will have to compete with the current American automakers that have EV's on the market. These companies include Tesla, General Motors, and Ford. Boeing is set to make another attempt to reach the International Space Station with its Starliner capsule Thursday, nearly 2 1/2 years after the company’s first mission fell short. Episode 180: UST and LUNA CRASH Breakdown

Episode 180: UST and LUNA CRASH Breakdown

Last weekend, as Terra’s UST stablecoin showed the first warning signs of instability, slipping from its dollar peg to $0.985, Luna Foundation Guard (LFG), the nonprofit responsible for overseeing the health of Terra’s ecosystem, voted to deploy $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and UST from reserves to repeg UST to the U.S. dollar. The move was the execution of a code-red strategy LFG had been planning for months: Since January, LFG had stockpiled over $3.5 billion in reserves of Bitcoin, Avalanche, LUNA, and UST, to deploy if UST ever slipped below $1. Per LFG, that loaned capital would be used to buy up huge amounts of UST, creating buy pressure that would push the stablecoin back up to its intended price. The Terra blockchain has resumed activity following a halt of around nine hours while validators plotted a route out of its ongoing crisis. The blockchain was halted at block 7607789 slightly after 3:00 UTC Friday. Blocks 7607790 and 7607791 then came through at around 11:27 UTC. Following the resumption of the blockchain, Terraform Labs, the company behind the Terra ecosystem, tweeted that network validators have disabled on-chain swaps and Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocols have been closed. It encouraged users to "bridge off-chain assets, such as bETH, to their native chains." Decentralized Finance (DeFi) application PancakeSwap has released a governance proposal that outlines a roadmap for its native token, CAKE. The proposal, which was passed with a 98.8% majority across 11 million votes, suggests imposing a supply cap of 750 million for the CAKE token. CAKE currently has a circulating supply of 295 million. The maximum supply is expected to be in circulation within the next three to four years. Australian bitcoin (BTC) miner Iris Energy (IREN) remains on track for 15 exahash per second (EH/s) in hashrate – 10 EH/s of that by early 2023 – but its fiscal third-quarter revenue of $15.2 million was shy of the analyst consensus forecast of $16 million.

Episode 179: Elon Musk Twitter Deal Update, Retail Earnings Week

Episode 179: Elon Musk Twitter Deal Update, Retail Earnings Week

Elon Musk can’t just walk away from his deal to acquire Twitter by paying an agreed-upon $1 billion breakup fee. It’s not that simple. Musk tweeted Friday that he has decided to put his acquisition of Twitter “on hold” as he researches whether the amount of fake/spam accounts on Twitter is actually just 5%, as the company has long claimed. He followed that tweet with another reiterating that he is still committed to the acquisition. Stock futures were higher Sunday evening after a week of steep losses that ended on a high note, and ahead of a big earnings week for retailers. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 89 points, or 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures added 0.4%. Nasdaq 100 futures jumped 0.6%. On Friday, the Dow rose 466.36 points, or 1.47%, while the S&P 500 climbed 2.39%. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 3.82% and posted its strongest one-day gain since November 2020. Still, all three averages posted losing weeks. The gains came as investors went into relief rally mode to cap off a bad week for stocks in which the S&P 500 nearly descended into bear market territory. It remains to be seen, however, how long the rally will last or how much further stocks have to fall before this year’s downtrend bottoms. Oil giant Aramco reported a more-than 80% jump in net profit Sunday, topping analyst expectations and setting a new quarterly earnings record since its IPO. The Saudi Arabian behemoth said net income rose 82% to $39.5 billion in the first three months of the year, up from $21.7 billion over the same period last year. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast net income of $38.5 billion dollars. The record quarter for Aramco comes amid a standout quarter for Big Oil, which is benefiting from a sharp rise in oil and gas prices. Aramco said its earnings were driven by higher crude oil prices, rising volumes sold and improved downstream margins.

Instagram’s non-fungible token (NFT) pilot is the first play in a creator monetization strategy that’s still taking shape. Shortly after unveiling its “Digital Collectibles” product Monday, the Meta (FB)-owned social media platform signaled its interest in turning NFTs into a revenue stream for the creators catering to the platform's billion-plus user base. Figuring out how to leverage that base is to be determined. At launch, Instagram’s NFT pilot will merely allow a handful of creators to share their digital art on the platform – no sales, trading or fees involved. Episode 176: What is your Networth?

A 2022 survey from digital wealth management company Personal Capital found that 74% of people don't believe they'll reach their own definition of a high net worth individual. A 2018 survey from YouGov exploring perceptions around how much money it takes to be considered rich or poor found that 56% of people thought earning $100,000 a year means you're rich. That same Personal Capital study placed the figure around $400,000. Median household income was $67,521 in 2020, a decrease of 2.9 percent from the 2019 median of $69,560. This is the first statistically significant decline in median household income since 2011. The real median earnings of all workers aged 15 and over with earnings decreased 1.2 percent between 2019 and 2020 from $42,065 to $41,535. The official poverty rate in 2020 was 11.4 percent, up 1.0 percentage point from 10.5 percent in 2019.  This is the first increase in poverty after five consecutive annual declines.

Episode 175: Coinbase NFT Marketplace, Starbucks NFTs

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has secured regulatory approval in France, according to a release from France's capital market regulator, the AMF (Autorité des marchés financiers). Binance is now a registered Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) in France and will be permitted to custody digital assets; facilitate the purchase, sale and exchange of such assets; and operate a trading platform for them. Crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN) said Wednesday it has opened the beta version of its non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace to the public. Coinbase saw just 900 transactions and 73 ETH (around $210,000) of sales volume in the debut week of its beta, though Coinbase did not say how many users had been granted access to the platform. Starbucks plans to launch a series of non-fungible token (NFT) collections, according to a company blog post published Tuesday. In addition to just NFTs, the company alluded to a full-fledged “Starbucks Digital Community Web3 platform” possibly tied to mobile payments in-store.

Episode 174: Fed Raises Interest Rates

Episode 174: Fed Raises Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point, the most aggressive step yet in its fight against a 40-year high in inflation. “Inflation is much too high and we understand the hardship it is causing. We’re moving expeditiously to bring it back down,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said during a news conference, which he opened with an unusual direct address to “the American people.” He noted the burden of inflation on lower-income people, saying, “we’re strongly committed to restoring price stability.” That likely will mean, according to the chairman’s comments, multiple 50-basis point rate hikes ahead, though likely nothing more aggressive than that. The Federal Reserve increased its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point, in line with market expectations. In addition, the central bank outlined a program in which it eventually will reduce its bond holdings by $95 billion a month. The rate move is the largest since 2000 and is in response to burgeoning inflation pressures. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell underlined the commitment to bringing inflation down but indicated that raising rates by 75 basis points at a time “is not something the committee is actively considering.” Short-term borrowing rates, particularly on credit cards, are set to jump higher. Since most credit cards have a variable rate, there’s a direct connection to the Fed’s benchmark, so expect your annual percentage rate to rise within a billing cycle or two. Credit card rates are currently just over 16%, significantly higher than nearly every other consumer loan and may go as high as 18.5% by the end of the year — which would be an all-time record. Adjustable-rate mortgages and home equity lines of credit are also pegged to the prime rate. Most ARMs adjust once a year, but a HELOC adjusts right away. The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage hit 5.55% this week, the highest since 2009, and up more than two full percentage points from 3.11% at the end of December.

Lucid Group an American EV manufacturer announced an agreement with the Government of Saudi Arabia, under which the Government will purchase up to 100,000 vehicles over a ten-year period, with an initial commitment to purchase 50,000 vehicles and an option to purchase up to an additional 50,000 vehicles over the same period.
