Welcome back to this week's podcast episode.


I'm Marna Thall owner of ThinWithin.com and ThinWithinLife.com and over the next several weeks, as I look to retire my business, I am giving you the most important tips that have made the biggest difference in the lives and bodies of thousands of clients and members I've had the pleasure to work with.


Today we are focusing on Tip #2: Focusing on One Thing


Research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience suggests that focusing on one thing at a time and mastering it can lead to better outcomes in terms of learning, productivity, and overall performance. Here are some key points:


1. Limited Attentional Resources: The human brain has limited capacity for processing information at any given moment. When we try to multitask or switch between tasks rapidly, our attention becomes divided, leading to decreased performance on each task. This phenomenon is known as "attentional bottleneck." Focusing on one task allows us to allocate our limited attentional resources more effectively.


2. Deep Work: Cal Newport, a computer science professor and author, popularized the concept of "deep work," which refers to the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. He argues that deep work is essential for producing high-quality work and achieving professional success. Deep work requires sustained attention and concentration on a single task, often resulting in mastery and innovation.


3. Neuroplasticity and Learning: Neuroscientists have demonstrated that the brain has a remarkable ability to reorganize itself in response to experience, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. When we focus on learning and practicing a specific skill or topic, our brains undergo structural and functional changes that strengthen the neural connections associated with that activity. This focused practice leads to skill acquisition and mastery over time.


In summary, research suggests that the brain already has a heavy cognitive load, as it must constantly switch between tasks, leading to mental fatigue and decreased performance.

By focusing on one task at a time to improve your health, you will reduce cognitive load and allocate more mental resources to mastering one powerful weight loss and body transformation tool at a time. The results will include: better concentration, deeper skill acquisition, increased cognitive along with better learning and expertise development.


By harnessing the brain's capacity for deep focus and sustained attention, you will see better long term health results.

Somatic work refers to therapeutic approaches that focus on the mind-body connection, emphasizing the integration of psychological and physical experiences. 

It involves paying attention to bodily sensations, movements, and feelings to address and release tension, stress, or unresolved emotions. This approach believes that the body and mind are interconnected, and addressing one can positively impact the other.


In the context of weight loss, somatic work can be beneficial for Five specific reasons:

  • Emotional Eating: Somatic will help you become more aware of your emotional triggers for overeating and food choices. By understanding and addressing your underlying emotions that are stored in your body, you can develop healthier coping mechanisms and reduce emotional eating.


  • Body Awareness: Somatic practices enhance your body awareness, allowing you to recognize physical sensations associated with hunger, fullness, thirst, etc. This heightened awareness leads to mindful eating, where you end up making more conscious food choices.

Stop making weight loss HARD!
I recognize that many of  you are having a lot of drama around how to lose weight, which program to try, the best strategy and whatnot. Especially after the holidays, the added pounds can be a source of frustration. 


I used to sit in indecision and it doesn’t work for weight loss or accomplishing any goals in your life.
Any indecisiveness about how to lose weight and change your body is translating to you unintentionally self-sabotaging yourself because your mind is trying to figure out a strategy and then changing it’s mind about the strategy.

This drama happens all the time. It’s a question I get ALL the time. I always get questions about how to lose weight and where to start.
If your weight loss system isn’t clear and isn’t simple, it won’t be effective and you will find yourself bouncing from one weight loss idea to another. 

 

So how do you make weight loss easier?

Your system must be clear, easy to think about, and your weight loss system needs fits into your life easily, and give you results.

 

So let me ask you –


  1. Do you have 100% clarity around how you're going to lose weight this year?
  2. Is it simple to think about?
  3. Does it fit into your life easily?
  4. Is it doable?

 

Too much ambiguity creates a confused mind and which then create inaction.

I had a client who came to me weighing around 230. She wanted to lose weight and I immediately saw that her brain wanted to make my simple process more confusing.
When I helped her make two simple decisions on how to approach weight loss over the next 7 days, her brain relaxed, she had to keep refocussing - but that ease and clarity over time allowed her to go from 230 to 173.
You too can slim down but pay attention to whether you are overcomplicating your strategy and notice your beliefs around your ability to slim down.

Hypnosis may be more effective than diet and exercise alone for people looking to lose weight. The idea is that the mind can be influenced to change habits like overeating. However, exactly how effective it may be is still up for debate.


Here are just two studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of hypnotherapy and visualization on weight loss:

  1. Kirsch, I. - "Hypnotic Enhancement of Cognitive-Behavioral Weight Loss Treatments: Another Meta-Reanalysis"

    • Findings: This meta-analysis examined 18 studies on the effects of cognitive-behavioral treatments for weight loss, with and without hypnosis. The results indicated that adding hypnosis to cognitive-behavioral treatments enhanced weight loss outcomes significantly. Participants who received hypnotherapy showed greater initial weight loss and were more likely to maintain their weight loss over time.

Shifting your mindset from a state of fractured thinking to one that embraces hopefulness and positivity is paramount. You have to change your broken thinking to thoughts that lead you down a hopeful and powerful place.

That’s why I’m not a big fan of dieting. When you’ve dieted for any length of time, you start to feel beat down when you struggle to adhere to a program you are on, which is why I'm so careful with my language and coaching.

Here’s what doesn’t work – it doesn’t work to tell yourself that you suck at dieting, that you can’t change, compare yourself to others who somehow have it all figured out or tell yourself that you just inherited crappy jeans.


Negative thinking and comparing are never going to help you. That BS thinking is only going to perpetuate added weight and the thinking that you are broken.

If you don’t change what’s going on between your ears, you can’t change your weight long term.

I absolutely love intuitive eating for its weight loss benefits. In addition to losing weight, the mental, emotional and physical benefits of a non-diet intuitive eating approach is recognized in numerous studies for all its in benefits.


In this week's podcast, I want to remind you of the incredible benefits of intuitive eating backed by research.


Discover These 7 Benefits of Intuitive Eating: Transform Your Relationship with Food and Thrive:


Improved Psychological Well-Being: Research indicates that intuitive eating is associated with improved mental health outcomes. Studies have shown a reduction in depression, anxiety, and body dissatisfaction among individuals who practice intuitive eating (Tribole & Resch, 2012; Tylka & Kroon Van Diest, 2013).

       

Enhanced Weight Management: Studies have found a positive link between intuitive eating and healthier weight management. A longitudinal study published in "Obesity" demonstrated that intuitive eating behaviors were associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and a reduced likelihood of obesity (Van Dyke & Drinkwater, 2014).  

Reduced Risk of Eating Disorders: Intuitive eating principles have been shown to be protective against the development of disordered eating patterns. Research published in the "American Journal of Health Education" indicated a negative correlation between intuitive eating and disordered eating behaviors (Hawkings & Matwiejczyk, 2019).

 

Better Blood Sugar Control: Intuitive eating's emphasis on mindful eating may contribute to improved glycemic control. A study published in the "Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics" found that intuitive eating was associated with better blood sugar control in individuals with type 2 diabetes (Herbert et al., 2018).


Healthier Dietary Patterns: Research suggests that intuitive eaters tend to adopt healthier dietary patterns. A study published in "Appetite" showed that intuitive eaters had higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while also consuming lower levels of saturated fat and added sugars (Herbert et al., 2018).  

Reduced Emotional Eating: Intuitive eating's focus on recognizing emotional triggers has been associated with reduced emotional eating behaviors. A study in the "Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior" found that intuitive eating was linked to lower levels of emotional eating (Camilleri et al., 2015).  

Positive Cardiometabolic Health: Intuitive eating may have favorable effects on cardiometabolic health markers. A study published in the "Health Education Journal" indicated that intuitive eating behaviors were associated with improved cholesterol and blood pressure levels (Hawkings & Matwiejczyk, 2019)                   

These references provide insight into the research supporting the benefits of intuitive eating, reinforcing the notion that adopting intuitive eating principles can contribute to various aspects of physical and mental well-being.

I have an important question for you - Do you believe good things about yourself and your body or are most of your thoughts about your body pretty negative?

 

The answer to this really matters because you will live out whatever your head is telling you over and over.

 

  • If you believe weight loss is hard – it will be.
  • If you believe working out sucks – it will
  • If you believe you don’t have time to cook meals - you won’t
  • If you believe menopause is going to make you fat - you will live into that.
  • If you believe you can’t change - you are right.
  • You believe you are big boned and being overweight is your destiny - you will surely live into that.

 

Beliefs are repeated and programmed thoughts. So what you WANT to believe?

 

When you go into a weight loss program -

  • Choose to believe that what you are doing matters.
  • Choose to believe you can achieve what you set your mind to.
  • Choose to believe that you are more than capable of slimming down.
  • Choose to believe that you are worth the time, the focus, the energy and effort.
  • Choose to celebrate yourself for making new choices.
  • Choose to celebrate your positive actions.
  • Choose to enjoy  the foods that work well in your body and that make you look and feel your best.


Spending time being a thought sleuth is a powerful and effective use of your time because if you just notice what makes you feel better and what makes you feel worse so that you can get to know yourself better.


Then do the intentional work to think thoughts that support you creating the health and life you so deserve.

Most of the time, when we want to lose weight, we focus ONLY on the steps to accomplish that goal.
I’m not saying that it's totally ineffective, but it’s certainly not as effective as it could be, which is why people fail at losing weight.

What’s a better strategy? In this episode I want to talk about how you to approach weight loss and late night eating by crafting your identity. In other words, who do you want to BE as a healthy and lean you?

Instead of looking at all the ways we can avoid eating late at night, crafting a new late night identity of someone who is light, and health and lean is so much more fun, inspiring and effective.
The last thing that I want to do, is to create more diet or weight loss rules for you.


You will only rebel.
Inside of ThinWithin Life we never start with rules, but we start in Module 1 of the Weight Loss Mastery Course defining who you want to be, why you want to lose weight, and what that looks like, feels, like and sounds like.

262. Does Late Night Eating Really Make A Big Difference On Weight?

A new study by Harvard Medical School investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that when we eat significantly impacts our energy expenditure, appetite, and molecular pathways in adipose tissue. Their results are published in Cell Metabolism.

Frank Scheer, HMS professor of medicine, wanted to understand if the time people eat at matters everything else is kept consistent.

Each participant they looked at completed two laboratory protocols: one with a strictly scheduled early meal schedule, and the other with the same meals, each scheduled about four hours later in the day.

They found that eating four hours later makes a significant difference in hunger levels, the way people burn calories and the way we store fat, had profound effects on hunger and the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin, which influence our drive to eat.
 

So if you tend to be a late night eater and are struggling to slim down –  see if you can eat your last meal or snack one hour earlier this entire week and see if you see any positive shifts in your weight. If not, stop eating a half-hour to one hour earlier next and assess. Slowly shift your window earlier until you find the zone in which you notice your body losing weight.

Many people complain of weight gain weight after the loss of a loved one which also makes them feel unhappy with themselves.  It is a common problem when you are grieving but if you understand why and how it is happening, you will be able to do things which will help.

The results from a National Swedish Survey looked at the influences bereavement on weight and found that loss of parents was associated with a 0.45 increase in BMI (SE = 0.20).


Yes, some people might also lose weight and lose their appetite.

However, if you have gained weight since the loss of a loved one, you are not alone.

Comfort eating is common when we are unhappy in life and grief is one of the most challenging things that we ever have to face.  It causes a lot of stress on our bodies and that affects our appetite and sleep.

Change in eating patterns and sleep patterns are common in grief. Chronic stress tends to increase the appetite and you might find that you still don't feel like cooking or it takes extra effort to look after yourself - effort that you just may not have much of. So, we get into the bad habit of surviving on snacks or grab-and-go sustenance.  You might also find yourself drinking more coffee to try to increase your energy, trying to get back to work, or cope with family demands. 

Chronic stress boosts cortisol, which often increase belly fat - the inflammatory and hormonal fat, which further throws your system out of balance, making you more prone to insulin resistance, diabetes, and more.

259. My Thoughts if You Are Considering taking Ozembic, Mounjaro, Wegovy or other Semaglutide Medications to Lose Weight?

Mounjaro, Ozembic, Semaglutide, Wegovy and other medications coming on the market are an injectable drug that originally was prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes to manage their blood sugar and reduce their risk of heart problems and other complications.

The FDA first approved semaglutide in 2017 for type 2 diabetes and again in 2021 under the brand name Wegovy.

Recently, it was approved for “chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition,” including high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol.  


In this episode, Marna Thall, owner of ThinWithin.com and ThinWithinLife.com shares her opinions on these medications as a weight loss and emotional eating expert.


Mounjaro, Ozembic, Semaglutide, Wegovy are prescribed in various doses and can be in the form of a weekly injection - administered in the stomach, thigh or arm - or a daily oral tablet.


Before considering any new medication, it's important that you know the side effects of these medications:

The array of side effects are one of the reasons why it’s important to be issued the right dose and be monitored by a doctor or pharmacist. These can include nausea, cramping, diarrhea, acid reflux, vomiting and constipation. Some people report hair loss, heartburn and swelling at the site of injection. There is also a slight increased risk of pancreatitis, hypoglycemia and thyroid cancer, and it’s important to stay hydrated to avoid kidney issues.


In addition, since these medications are relatively new, there’s no way of saying long-term risks, unless we use the medications for 20 years and then look back retrospectively and find problems.

As a weight loss coach, Marna knows that weight loss is complicated and not just one dimensional. There are various factors impacting weight including: genetics, environment, hormones, emotions, etc.

When I began studying the naturally thin, it became evident that my language was different from theirs.

The naturally thin said things like –

· That’s just so much food

· I can’t eat all that

· I’m too small for all that food – want to share?


I realized their thin words reinforced them thinking of themselves as small, thin, and skinny, where my words reinforced a larger, more broken persona.

I was amazed to see how little they ate and how they shared their "smallness" by sharing that they could only eat a small quantity of food, or they would want to share their meals, take food home or ask for kids portions.

Question for you to consider-

1. Are you reinforcing a thinner body or a bigger body with your words?

2. What do you currently, or WANT to believe about yourself?

3. Are you talking as though you are small, thin, light, lean, and beautiful OR are your words reinforcing the version of you that you don’t like as much - like telling yourself you’re a big girl, that the portions are too tiny, that you need more food?


Your thoughts are the first part of creating new behaviors so it’s important to be aware of the the words that you are telling yourself and those around you about  who you are, who you are becoming and to get clear of your future self that you can absolutely move to manifest.
 

Start paying attention to how often you are in bigger you thinking and how often you are in thinner you thinking?  

Try to catch the bigger you thinking and notice how much for fun it is to reinforce the thinner and smaller you.

I'm still on break but this was a fan favorite last year!

This is why in this episode I want to talk about how to get in front of the main obstacles that have been getting in the way of you losing weight and keeping it off.  

If you have a body goal that you’d like to achieve this year, likely this isn’t your first rodeo. You have been through this before and have had similar desires for your body but something just got in the way.  

The obstacles that typically get in the way for most women trying to lose weight are-
1. Overeating
2. Emotionally leaning on food to help you feel better or to numb you out.
3. Late-night and weekend overeating habits.
4. Eating foods that make you feel like crud – but you still eat them anyway.

All these obstacles start in your mind. Every single one!
Before just eating – there is a thought – if thoughts come before the action of eating, then if you want to get in front of any overeating obstacles, emotional eating obstacles, or food craving obstacles, a new mental framework would be the answer!

The thoughts you have are either moving the needle toward weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain.

Start this year off by being a thought sleuth. Pay attention to the thoughts that encourage you to overeat, late-night eating, and give in to food cravings.
