Recover Yourself

Recover Yourself

By MartinJon
The “Recover From” mindset only looks back and is so important in the early days of recovery. However, achieving long term growth is about knowing what we’re “Recovering To.” This podcast talks to people who are doing that, Recovering To… themselves. With 19 years sober MartinJon presents substance abuse but knows, and addresses, that it’s not a prerequisite for recovery. From eating disorders to shopping or abusive relationships there are so many things that cause us to lose sight of ourselves. Separating from these is one part of the journey, but to Recover Yourself is the goal of our lives.

Idle Hands: Shifting Our Focus in Recovery (GIVEAWAY)
In this episode, I am talking with Barbie the Welder, and you have an opportunity to win one of five copies of her book The Inspiration Blueprint. With over a dozen ways to enter through this Gleam contest https://gleam.io/competitions/S4Wxj-recover-yourself-barbie-the-welder-the-inspiration-blueprint-giveaway We are talking all about mindset and have a purpose in recovery. Our addictions are symptoms of the disease of not having a purpose. And sometimes you must try something just to find something. I am no longer an artist in the way I was, but it helped me change my mindset. Today, I am using what I learned as an artist and spreading my work which is deep and meaningful. I have a purpose and it started in one place and it is constantly moving. I am so ecstatic to be giving away copies of this book and to be talking with Barbie TRIGGER WARNING: This episode addresses reengaging drinking while in recovery. This is something that Barbie talks about, and I support, her recovery. I still consider her in recovery, while no longer sober. The purpose in her life has taken the front seat in her life. Her mindset and self-love are leading the way. This is obviously not for everyone, and it is not for me, but I love that Barbie is where she is within her recovery to be able to do this. I will see a client for a total of 4 sessions which starts with my doing a portrait of my client. The portrait is intimate and opens a vocabulary to trauma and its healing. These are not for everyone and if you are not ready I will not work with you. It is important that you are ready to step into your own and stop playing a victim cursed by things around you. Talking Recovery: Recap of Recent Episodes
This episode is meant to connect some of the dots of the past 6 episodes. As I am focused on topics now more than individual stories it may not be clear as to how these individual topics may connect to the topic of “Recovering To.” This is because we are all in different places in our recovery and some of these may be more intriguing to you than others. Episodes like this will give you a bit of an overview and hopefully open you to ideas, and listening to episodes that are included in these recaps. Reframing Fear
Last week we looked at treatment centers from the vantage point of someone who is on the ground working with patients and for the centers. If you didn't get a chance to listen here is the link https://anchor.fm/martinjon/episodes/Understanding-Treatment-Centers-eihpu3 Not all centers are created equal, however. Today, as we spoke about in the last episode, there are a lot of conflicting issues with offering help through an institution. Of course, I don’t have all the numbers and I am not involved in the inner workings of Above and Beyond, the treatment center that we are going to be referencing today, but from my vantage point, they are doing some real honest and effective work. My guest this week is Dan Hostetler, the executive director of Above and Beyond and he is on the board of directors of SMART Recovery USA. Dan and I are talking all about re-framing fear from the moment you step into a treatment center that, in my opinion, needs to be the driving force. Those of us who are stepping into treatment for the first time are often riddled with fear. The first people we interact within a center often legitimizes that fear by being standoffish and untrusting. That is not what I experienced when walking into Above and Beyond. Full Disclosure I have never been through any programs there, but when I approached them with my Recover Yourself work they saw the connections my work and theirs had and invited me to learn more about their programming. There is a lot in this episode about how we all can step into our lives in deeper ways and have more purpose-driven lives. The results that Dan speaks about in this episode are achievable and I am proud to present him and the work that is being done at Above and Beyond. Understanding Treatment Centers
Treatment centers are an essential role to play within the world of recovery. They are complex entities in society these days as they explicitly separate what society deems as “addicts” from the rest of the population, all of whom have addictive tendencies as well. Treatment centers are one of the places that everyone quietly judges as they are, by design, meant to attract those who society pushes to the outskirts. As organizations, their missions are not always as benevolent as they may seem. There is a paradox in the world of treatment centers, they stand being both a business and an altruistic space. I am not saying that these two things cannot ever coincide however, it is not common. This paradox means that it may be exceedingly difficult to understand and justify, the actions of these spaces. When acting in the best interest of the business, for instance, the altruistic mission must be abandoned. When the opposite happens, a conflict arises in the legitimacy of the for-profit sector businesses, as they are mandated by law to profit. The non-profit businesses don’t have that weight to consider but often work at much leaner margins and may have to use the “It’s just business” argument more often then they would like as individuals.     April Garfoli is a seasoned veteran in the world of Treatment Facilities. So seasoned in fact she has left that world behind to stand within her own ethics. Doing that, she no longer needs to justify the paradox described above. April has worked in corrections, detox, residential, dual diagnosis, in and outpatient facilities, homes, schools, and community centers, she has a master’s in clinical Counseling and a psychology degree. This episode lays out a number of things we all should know about treatment centers, especially if we may be, or know someone that may be, admitted to one, one day. Treatment Centers need to be seen as triage spaces, places where we can get a leg up, but they are not always equipped to help you keep that leg up. This episode will give you some idea of how much you can expect from your local treatment center. This is by no means an indictment of treatment centers, but a way to expose the paradox so that you have a better idea of the complexity of the situations there.   You can find April by Liking Her Facebook group and can follow her as she continues to inspire those around her  https://www.facebook.com/RecoveryConceptsConsulting/    I also encourage you to subscribe and learn more about her concepts on her YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbq5VAsGI8d5WpvBijT1T-A?fbclid=IwAR0ryBGYRC4MjP7JwhJAemInWa-VN-UMZ8E76WarMoF2u8UP7IBrR7LwgCA   As my work suggests I am always looking to recover myself completely and I help others recover themselves in my one on one work. Patience and Trust in the Healing Process During Recovery
Patience is a key feature if we ever what to do anything new. When we begin something we are going to suck at it. If by chance we don’t, we will eventually learn that there is still room to grow and a lot of it. I am talking with Deana Barnes of @blackandsober and @deanabarnesbeauty about being patient during recovery. Healing is healing and no matter if you are doing it physically or emotionally there are some very key similarities. If you have a scab, and you pick at it the possibility of that injury becoming infected grows, and the healing time of tit grows as well. That is very much like what we experience when healing emotionally as well. If you go out and pick your scabs by revisiting your wounds that will take longer to heal. If you ignore them, meaning you are not keeping your wounds clean, they will become infected and that happens to way too many of us because we don’t have patience. This episode features the idea of being patient as one of the key points to a successful recovery program. Although I don’t relish talking about early recovery it is what has to happen to get too long term recovery and I encourage all of you, even if you are no longer struggling with your traditional DOC to consider where else you might want to add a bit of recover form and continue to grow. Last week we talked about not existing in a box and not resting on your laurels as you continue to expand. This episode speaks very much to that, the ideas presented here are not just something you do once, but something you do repeatedly in order to continue to expand and push yourself outside of the boxes you find yourself. Deana provides a variety of beauty and wellness treatments such as Hydrafacial, waxing, massage, and Reiki. Deana is a board-certified massage therapist, licensed aesthetician, master Reiki therapist, yoga teacher, and stress management coach. Deana has worked to build a community of wellness-focused individuals who believe in working toward being better every day. Deana is the creator of the Black and Sober Workbook, which provides meditation exercises to assist in the process of reaching long term sobriety. It is her goal is to provide a space both online and in-person, that facilitates and assists others in the process of increasing mindfulness and well being. Evolution: Stepping into Consciousness
Evolution is happening all around us all the time. It has been interesting for me to have been born in a time of what is known as “Quickening.” This refers to consciousness, that we are all connected to, changing increasingly rapidly. To give you some perspective I was born before answering machines, for telephones, were common, and I still consider myself quite young at 45. What has happened in the world is astonishing, but to look at what cannot be seen, the consciousness of all things, we can see even more growth. Today as increasing numbers of people get into recovery, we are also taking on the responsibility of recovering ourselves. This is because it is not enough to simply recover from some substance or some behavior any longer. We want more, and it is not that AA, or those that came before us didn’t want more but, and I see this as being due to the level of consciousness we are stepping into, more, as we understand it today, wasn’t accessible. All of those that came before us have been doing great work contributing to the consciousness from which we are all benefiting. Today we can much more easily grasp what people 85 years ago were struggling and striving to accomplish. That doesn’t mean we understand anything today however. It is not time to sit on your laurels and pat yourself on the back for your new beverage choices, you are laying the groundwork for the next 100 years. The information we need is within us, it has never, and may never be able to be written, there is nothing you can identify with that will be you other than you. I am so happy for the work we are doing and I am looking forward to witnessing it continue to change the world. The Myth of Creativity and Intoxication: Pop Buchanan
There is no greater lie than the idea that intoxication contributes to creativity. The idea that you create drunk and edit sober is today, a total falsity. This episode features the prolific and energetic @popbuchanan who is the man behind @soberisdope and @monkhealing We are here to dismantle the old idea, which I believe was true at one point in time, that intoxication contributes to creativity. My next episode with @bakerallen will address the idea that consciousness is something we are gaining ever-increasing amounts of access to but that is an important part of this episode as well. 50 years ago we, as people connected to the greater consciousness, did not have as much access to information on the other side of the physical veil as we have today. That was the reason intoxication was such a large part of our story of creativity.   Today there is a different access point that is directly connected to us without the use of intoxication. That is not to say the intoxication cannot get you experience, of course, it can, but the substance is not going to alter you, or your life, in a way that is sustainable. That is your job, YOU are the source of all things and the power of your creativity cannot be given to a substance, that will just end up being another thing you will have to recover while recovering yourself.   Sober is Dope! Recognizing and Addressing Expectations
This is the beginning of a new format for the Recover Yourself Podcast. Previous episodes focused on individuals and now we are looking at topics.  This episode addresses expectations, those we have, those we think others have, and those others actually have of us. Expectations are so hard to suss out due to their being so deeply ingrained in our experience. These are very often tied to traumas we experienced as children and so they end up showing up day in and day out as facts. To have expectations that others will judge us creates stigma within us. When we see it expressed by others it is proven that our expectations are correct this is a vicious loop that doesn’t give us a lot of space to learn new ideas. Recovering yourself is not easy and we have to allow for slow and steady growth. That growth is always connected to how we interpret, and perceive, the world around us. Lona Currie of Hope In Recovery Network is my guest to talk about expectations. Lona is a trans man and expectations of what others would expect of him drove him to hide from who he was. Transition, to anything, is difficult but (and this is why I feature people who are trans often) individuals that are trans cannot hide their transition. Those of us who do no t transition our gender, but maybe go from drinking to not, or change our marital, or work status, anything we can hide it when it is convenient. It may not be easy, but we can “pass” in normal non-intimate situations, hiding who we are at the moment. We hide because we have expectations of how others will judge us. Lona couldn’t do that and because of that he had to face, and present, his transition every day. Having had to do this his expectations were loud in his mind. Not being able to hide at any moment meant he could not hide his expectations from himself. What expectations are you hiding from yourself? Chris Robinson: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am speaking with Chris Robinson who is a Y12SR instructor. His journey in recovery had him seeking approval and validation. He had to open up to his needs revolving around that validation. Those needs had him going out and getting one certificate after another proving to him, and others, that he was valid, that he had something to offer. Knowing that we are what we have to offer is a big step in our growth and recovery. Knowing that we have nothing to prove and that we are the proof is a much bigger gift than any short-lived joy that a certificate can provide. We also talk about his having gotten married and directly look at how easily we can allow others to pick up after us. I know when I was diagnosed with MS I saw first hand how grateful I was to not have a partner. Did not having a partner make things less comfortable? Yes, of course, I would have loved to have been coddled and cuddled but if I was I would have allowed it. I would have taken the easy route to be weak and allow myself to be coddled while slowly building resentment and manipulating that situation. Today I am so extremely grateful for my MS and all that it has shown me about myself. That would not necessarily be that case had I had a partner who I could lean on. To find out more about Chris follow him on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/beardsandbuddhi/ The video to this episode is at https://youtu.be/HSNd9xdFYDI Broadening the conversation around recovery to include you is a big part of my mission. Ester Nicholson of Soul Recovery: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am speaking with the author and founder of Soul Recovery Ester NicholsonEster has a staggering 34 years and I am so excited to be talking with her about what has to be one of the most important parts of recovering yourself, What is the self we are recovering? That self we are recovering, in Ester’s words, is our Soul. I must agree and she and I dive deep about how the work gets done. With so much going on around us today we must do the work, but to just tell you to do the work is silly, most people have no idea what it means and how to even approach it. Well, Recovering our souls, or selves, means we have to be able to look outward and see how, what we are experiencing, is reflecting ourselves back to us. We have to question “How is this me?” Neither Ester nor I can give you the answer but we do talk about how we have found the answer in our lives. This podcast is about giving you clues as to how to do the work yourself because there is no magic bullet but there is magic, and you are filled with it. Watch the video to this episode https://youtu.be/mo6b7DXz9r8 To find out more about ester visit www.soulrecovery.org www.esternicholson.com https://www.instagram.com/esternicholson/ https://www.facebook.com/SoulRecovery/ With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Nikki Myers: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am speaking with the founder of @Y12SR (Yoga 12 Step Recovery) Nikki Myers. Nikki realized after 2 relapses, that although both Yoga and 12 Steps programs are both useful in solidifying one’s recovery, she and others like her needed a way to connect the two differing aspects. Yoga, a combination of physical and mental awareness had little to offer her in the cognitive world we are all raised in. The 12 Step programs that we have all around us tend to exist in the cognitive world and lack some of the real hard inner work that yoga focuses on. Her bringing these together has helped millions and as it relates to recovering the self Nikki and I seem to have a lot to talk about. Yoga 12 step recovery is yoga for those of us in recovery more than it is recovery for those of us interested in yoga. These are sessions that begin with a brief check-in, maybe a reading, and share and then we do some dimple mindful yoga movements. Find Y12SR meetings near you wherever you are in the world here https://y12sr.com/ there you will also find ways to get in touch with Nikki and her staff for training and other resources. With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Nikki and I connected in so many ways and I am looking forward to meeting face to face one day when this pandemic passes. I love and respect her approach and how she expresses her recovery. She and I both connect to the same outcomes of our practices which guide us forward in our work of being our own authentic selves. Broadening these conversations is part of my mission. I cannot express how grateful I am to have so many wonderful people trust me to interview them, it is my hope, that I also am able to contribute to their lives and show you how you might better see your growth. In this episode, I am talking Nathan Siler performer and composer who lives and works in NYC. In addition to being the chief architect of the NYC post-punk-prog band Portraiture, he is a classical singer who frequently sings at Carnegie Hall with the Bard Festival Chorale and at Lincoln Center with NY Concert Chorale.  Recently he was imprisoned (on stage) in the World Premiere of David Lang’s new Opera “The Prisoner of the State” at Lincoln Center.  He also keeps a packed schedule of composition and orchestration projects.  Siler's notable works include Original score to the devised theater piece Rise/Fall by Sheila B., Featured Orchestration for BAM (Jules Verne: From the Earth to the Moon); Original podcast theme song (Reverence Road); Film scores (The Widowers; We Are Mary); Full orchestral suite for Grammy© award-winning children's rock band Sugar-Free Allstars (performed by Winston-Salem Philharmonic and Oklahoma City Philharmonic). He produces albums across multiple genres, most recently: “Blaze: Songs from Pham” by Margaret Tran and the new debut EP by singer-songwriter Jason Drew. Nathan has a lot to share in this episode and we talk a lot about how creativity has been a part of our recovery. Nathan is also a new parent and we got the opportunity to talk about how that changed him, and how his understanding of distance has been challenged since the birth of his child. www.portraiturenyc.com www.nathansiler.com You can find Portraiture's albums 'Cruel Yellow' and 'Real as Ritual' below  Spotify Cruel Yellow: https://open.spotify.com/album/76TJvARXdrSjHKK0kSCFz0 Real as Ritual: https://open.spotify.com/album/4Zu06MJ0HQ7GhTl3LklF70 Apple Music Cruel Yellow: https://music.apple.com/us/album/cruel-yellow/1269611700 Real as Ritual: https://music.apple.com/gb/album/real-as-ritual/573938725 With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Trenda Hedges: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking Trenda Hedges the Wellness and Recovery Program Manager of Illinois’ Warm Line. Trenda has a history of addiction and has been working with the state of Illinois to help those struggling with, and curious about, addiction and recovery. She educates people about recovery by addressing it in communities in hopes to remove stigmas and resistance. Her recovery, and relationship with God, is earmarked upon losing her son, which we talk about in this episode. This, of course, would be difficult for everyone, but for someone who had previously been so associated with escaping how they feel, this is more than tragic because she was only beginning to learn how to cope with emotions. Her recovery is solid today because of her relationship with God and I want to applaud her for finding her way through that and growing as herself. I am so grateful for her sharing with me and openly expressing her faith and beliefs with us. Call the Warm Line at +1 866 359 7953 Option #2 Option #5  With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Although Trenda and I have different ways of looking at God and how he relates to our individual recoveries, I love her approach and her expression of recovery. Matt Bodett: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking with artist Matt Bodett. Matt was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and after initially recovering from the diagnosis, he began to rebuild his life in a way that he wanted. He looked at the system and stood up for himself within it. The responsibility, and clarity that requires is enormous and we speak about that in the episode. The medical industry which, if you have ever been to an IOP you will know, is very much about us appearing a certain way more than it is about us actually being wholly healthy, whatever that would mean for us individually. Matt is a signpost for us, and for mental health. We do recover, and we can each recover ourselves which is something that is extremely unique. If you want to learn more about Matt and his work visit his website  http://www.mattbodett.com/or contact him on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mattbodett/ With episodes like this one, I am extremely grateful. Although schizophrenia is outside the realm of my recovery conversation it remains deeply connected. Broadening the recovery conversation is part of my mission. I cannot express how grateful I am to have so many wonderful people trust me to interview them like @thesobersenorita @staciekdavis @walkunchained and so many others, it is my hope, that I also am able to contribute to their lives and show you how you might better see your growth. The Sober Senorita: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking with Sober Blogger and She Recovers recovery coach Kelly Fitzgerald Junco AKA The Sober Senorita. https://sobersenorita.com/ What I love about this episode is that Kelly is right on the cusp os 7 years and her awareness is opening up to new things all the time. This is the magic of long term recovery. Sure after a year, you can see the benefits, and after a few more you have gone through all sorts of ups and downs and continue to hold on tight to sobriety. But this, long term recovery, is about really growing beyond that old, tired Recovering From story and stepping into who you truly are. Kelly is in the midst of this major transformation and recognizing it. . . I cannot express how grateful I am to have so many wonderful people trust me to interview them like Ruby Warrington, Laura McKowen, Pop Buchanan and so many others, it is my hope, that I also am able to contribute to their lives and show you how you might better see your growth. Emily Lynn Paulson: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, Emily Paulson and I get real about honesty. However, it’s not as if we talk about “Being Honest” the whole time but, in the end, that is where everything is pointed. Writing, for many of us, is about building our voice which is all about being honest with ourselves and knowing our value. That happens to be exactly the launching pad of Emily’s book “Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life.” Numbing out is about hiding, or not being honest, with ourselves. and as a mother, to be honest, and say “Yes, I love my children but…” is an act of rebellion in the face of all that our patriarchal society wants women to be. Not being able to say that, or even face it, has forced countless mothers to buy into the “mommy needs wine” culture. Talking about these things has been wonderful for me because my heart breaks every time, I see women being judged. We have created a society that doesn’t embrace women, and there are plenty of women that support that culture. To have Emily, and all the women I’ve had on this podcast, speaking up and supporting each other is such a joy for me. Get her book “Highlight Real: Finding Honesty & Recovery Beyond The Filtered Life” wherever books are sold. This book is not just for those on a recovery path due to addictions it is about honesty and getting real with ourselves. Laura McKowen: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In her new book “We Are The Luckiest” Laura is raising the question “What is so lucky about being an addict?” When she entered the rooms Laura thought that everyone around her was bullshitting themselves. “They must be, without alcohol your life can’t be better.” Little did she know how much better it was about to get. Today Laura has a daughter who is safe and healthy, something she wasn’t always able to say. Today Laura is taking another step, she is no longer simply “Recovering From” she has begun the journey of “Recovering To.” In a nutshell that means looking at what else is in the way of her clarity. Examining the world around her and identifying where else might she be escaping and trading an amazing life for a novel one. Laura’s book “We Are the Luckiest” can be found wherever books are sold. This book is not just for those on a recovery path due to addictions that society hates, this book is for everyone, the shopaholic, and the netflixaholic as well. Sure, we can say “It’s not bad” but it is. You’re trading your clarity for emptiness, and if that’s is not going to be considered bad then I don’t know what would be because that’s the exact reason people yell so loud about drug and alcohol addiction. Merrin Douglas: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am speaking with Merrin Douglas or @hummusandcucumber on Instagram. Merrin has 3 and a half years in recovery and she accomplished that without the use of a traditional program. You'll see culturally things are different between the US and the UK as you’ll see in this episode. Merrin, because she wasn’t homeless and had a moderate sense of doing alright, felt that the addiction services offered were not for her. I am sure this is both a perception she carries and one propagated by the culture as well. That idea persists here in the States as well, as we see so many people not adopting a program because they are functioning relatively well in their opinion. In my opinion, though programs like AA and SmartRecover have done a great job in letting people know that you are free to get help in not drinking even if you just want to not drink.     Merrin, I feel, is lucky. She is making it through the stages of her recovery with awareness and grace, but she is also having to take on the comments of others that are saying she is not an alcoholic. To that, I want to say, “Alcoholic” is just a label. We don’t need to hold a label to do anything, especially to not drink. Merrin is not trying to find a label to stick, to she trying to live her life with clarity, whether or not she is an alcoholic is not the question, the question she is asking is "Does she want to continue to drink?" which the answer today is a resounding "no."   You’ll hear in this episode that Merrin had replaced her alcohol with other things and is still struggling with an active energy drink addiction, but she is examining, and aware, of these things. She turned to, and away from, journaling and reading, recognizing that her approach and purpose for doing those things were neither honest nor in line with her at the moment. We all dip into doing stuff and, during early recovery, we can get enamored with just about anything. Being sure we move forward with integrity and awareness is the key to really recovering ourselves. Questioning ourselves along the way is the only way to truly recover ourselves completely.   You would never know that Merrin had no fellowship in her life. Those of us that come from the rooms, or are entrenched in some traditional program often believe that it is the program that holds the information, but the information is what created the program.    Video of this episode https://youtu.be/XtwMvnQwaBc If you would like to be a guest and share how you’re recovering yourself - Contact me through my website MartinJon.com   Follow me on Instagram at @MartinJon to learn more about how I am spreading my Recover Yourself message.   Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/message  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support

Since then, Celeste has openly spoken about her struggles with alcohol and her daily commitment to becoming a sober mom for the sake of her health and her family. Jeremy Floyd: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I’m talking with Jeremy Floyd who only has 21 months. (I think everyone can understand why I use the word only here) I talk about long term recovery because, more often than not, it is arrived at over a period of time. Jeremy, however, went on a personal pilgrimage walking 800 miles between Minnesota and Santa Monica California. His walk was to raise awareness of homelessness and addiction but what it really did was raise his awareness of himself. I invite you to listen to through the end when I talk about how you can get an opportunity to work with me and my Portrait Facilitation work for free. I am in recovery and so very happy, not because of my time but because of my growth and the depth of which I love myself. I have been having a rough time as of late but using all the tools I have learned and created I am taking every day, one day at a time. I am not in a state that my sobriety is threatened but I have noticed I am reaching for pacifiers more than I would like. Transition is just one of those things that cause me to hide a bit. MartinJon 2: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I wanted to talk a bit about Recover Yourself, the podcast and the idea. I host Recover Yourself workshops and I do recover yourself visits to IOPs (Intensive Outpatient Programs). I also see clients one on one where I do portraits of people which facilitate the Recover Yourself idea. . . The only requirement to recovering yourself is awareness. So much of our lives are filled with things that are built in order to take our awareness away from us. As I state in this episode, addiction is not a prerequisite to recovery. We can all use being more aware of ourselves. Doing that will help us advance our lives, be better people, not for other but for ourselves. Others will benefit from that as well of course but that is not the reason we want to recover ourselves. If it was it wouldn’t last. . . I give a few shout outs in this episode. @Recoveryelevator @Soberisdope @CarmellPelly @RecoveryHappyHour you, and many others that I didn’t happen to mention all get my deepest respect and thank you for tackling a part of the recovery world that I have less interest in. We all have our message and I am grateful for yours. Again I am grateful for so many people if you are, or have been tagged in any of my Instagram posts that I respect and believe in you. . . Alyssa Perez: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking with the founder or @rawrecoverytalk Alyssa Perez. Alyssa is approaching her 6th year, on her second round of recovery and she is really working it. Having worked in the field and been surrounded by those in recovery she has made it a point to give back, and that is what Raw Recovery Talk is. We don’t talk directly about stigma in this episode but, then again, that may be all we talked about. Alyssa is passionate about living honestly and she is creating a platform to help others choose to live honestly as well. If we in recovery carry shame, we create an environment where stigma festers. Living as open, proud and positive as we can, where we are, shuts that shit down super quick. Ruby Warrington: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking with with the author of Sober Curious and Material Girl Mystical World and founder of The Numinous all about how clarity is the goal of recovery. When we look at the word recover, from a broad perspective we can each indulge in it a bit more. We all have to do some recovering, but it's not only about being recovering from something. Recovery, as I approach it, and as Ruby addresses in this episode, is something to move towards. If we limit recovery to only is the previous definition of recovering from something, we continue to stigmatize and push people away from wanting to grow. Embracing what it is we are recovering leaves stigma behind and we have a place to stand. I am in recovery and so very happy, not because of my time but because of my growth and the depth of which I love myself. Tony Restored: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
I want to thank Tony for getting real with us, and for being open about where he needs to be real with himself, because even if you find that you’re the expert in the room, there is still something you can learn. Coaches and guides are going to be important in our lives, that’s why in 12 step we have sponsors. How many times have you cycled through sponsors because they are saying something that is not quite what you want to be hearing? As an artist I know if you give it away for free it may often have no value to the receiver. It is a valuable question that Tony raises. We also aren’t going to please everyone, and some people we may never forgive us for our past but no matter what we face, we can still recover with love and dignity. Tony is out in the world spreading his work and doing his best. At any moment someone might reject us and if they do so be it, we still have a life to live. Lee Torres: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I am talking with boxing coach @CoachLeeTorres about how life is one big transition. Coach Lee has 11 years of sobriety, owns a boxing gym, has ben through gender transition and he continues to face himself daily because life just keeps getting better. We talk about the challenges he has faced in a broad sense. One thing I love about when people get on the path of recovering themselves is that they no longer see one problem. They are focused on their growth; they see and accept challenges daily. They embrace living life trying to envelope the experience more every day. Life, for those of us who are recovering ourselves is a beautiful path of growth, exploration and love. We look at ourselves and we ask, “Where am I hiding?” By not allowing ourselves to get comfortable running or hiding we face the things in us that keep us from loving ourselves.  Video of this episode  https://youtu.be/phCaZABJK0I  Connect with Coach Lee Torres  https://www.instagram.com/theboxinggymws/ https://www.instagram.com/coachleetorres/  https://www.facebook.com/theboxinggym/ If you would like to be a guest and share how you’re recovering yourself - Contact me through my website MartinJon.com.  If you're interested in learning more about Lee you can contact him through Instagram @CoachLeeTorres Follow me on Instagram to learn more about how I am spreading my Recover Yourself message @martinjon Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/message Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support   Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support

Jen Elizabeth: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode I am talking with author Jen Elizabeth, @resurrektion_of_me on Instagram, about all that she has learned, about herself and the magic of living, on her road to recovery. We don’t talk about the back story, but you can find out more about what she has recovered from by reading her book Shape of a Woman and listening to her interviews with Sober Faust on Sobriety Tips or Carmell Pelly on Voice America. The mountains that Jen has moved for her recovery, and to be where she is today, are simply miracles which she recognizes right off the bat. With a past filled with childhood sexual trauma, cults, and a spiteful mother, Jen is finding a way to love herself more every day. Trusting that path, she is on, and knowing that the work lies within the living of our lives, Jen has discovered some universal truths. Jen shares many wonderful bits of wisdom and insight which she has learned about having faith in the process of healing.  Other Interviews with Jen Recovery Lifestyles http://www.voiceamerica.tv/media/340119 Sober Weekly https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=226&v=oiJAqSdbU8A The Open Discussion Movement https://odmovement.com/talk/jen-elizabeth-shape-of-a-woman/ Shape of a Woman on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NJ768CV/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 If you would like to share how you’re recovering yourself - Contact me through my website MartinJon.com.  If you're interested in learning more about Jen you can contact her through Instagram @resurrektion_of_me Follow me on Instagram to learn more about how I am spreading my Recover Yourself message @martinjon Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/message Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support   Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support

Pop Buchanan: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I’m talking with Pop Buchanan who has been recovering for the past 6.5 years. On Instagram he is the person is behind @MonkHealing @PopBuchanan and @SoberIsDope which is what caught my attention, because I couldn’t agree more. Having had an experience where he was guided to a recovery house Pop began his journey to contribute his voice to the cause.  The Sober Is Dope podcast is an exploration of sobriety and experiences on the journey.  As an aside Pop's sober day is Dec 15th and mine is Dec 14th, I always feel close to those who have a sober date near mine. I think it s significant to note that rock bottom happens around certain times of the year for different people. Either way I just wanted to make that notation.   Pop's website:  https://www.popbuchanan.net/  Sober Is Dope podcast:  https://www.popbuchanan.net/soberisdope  If you would like to share how you’re recovering yourself - Contact me through my website MartinJon.com.  If you're interested in learning more about Pop you can contact him through Instagram @MonkHealing @PopBuchanan and @SoberIsDope Follow me on Instagram to learn more about how I am spreading my Recover Yourself message @martinjon Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/message Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support   Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support

8 TaoCast with Ryan Breen
I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan while searching for treatment centers to host my Recover Yourself workshops. Ryan and I got on wonderfully and he has great insights and a wonderful way of connecting the complex  with the simple. Ryan is a relationship counselor, coach, and trauma specialist. You can contact him on Facebook, Instagram or through his website.  HERE IS A LINK TO OUR UPCOMING WORKSHOP IN CHICAGO ON JUNE 22ND This TaoCast features Verse 17 which states: When the Master governs, the people are hardly aware that he exists. Next best is a leader who is loved. Next, one who is feared. The worst is one who is despised. If you don't trust the people, you make them untrustworthy. The Master doesn't talk, he acts. When his work is done, the people say, "Amazing: we did it, all by ourselves!" .  TaoCasts are part of the Recover Yourself podcast series and features a guest who chooses any number between 1 and 81 (the number of verses in the Tao Te Ching) We the read and discuss that Tao verse.    I translate the title of Tao Te Ching to "The Cannon of Reason" and this series is about living within reason. We all have to live with each other and if we are going to do that we have to start understanding that there is only one way to do that, look inward to where we are all connected and where our love springs from.    Recover Yourself is a podcast series focused on recovering strength and power we have inadvertently given up. There is no limit to our power and yet we have all be shown, warned, and taught to live in fear that we are not enough and that there is not enough resource in the world for us.    As a former addict I am coming out with the message that we can all recover. I am changing the conversation from "Recover From" to "Recover To" and I want to help people recover who they are.    MartinJon is the host of Recover Yourself and a mentor, speaker and originator of Portrait Facilitation which helps people recover themselves completely. MartinJon is dedicated to contributing his unique experiences to better the world, his life and the lives of others by helping people understand we have no limits.  Become a supporter of this podcast:  https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support  https://www.facebook.com/couplesandfamily/ relationshipperspectives.com https://www.instagram.com/ryanbreenlcpc/ Workshop tickets

Stacie Davis: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
In this episode, I talk with Stacie Davis of @Staciekdavis @there.i.saidit and @morning.gratitude about her 19 years in recovery. Stacie is in a wonderful place within her recovery, she has become a completely different person. One of the greatest gifts we have as people is the power of transformation.  Stacie has been a stand-up comic, power-lifter and now she is venturing into the world of bodybuilding. We talk a bit about how attaching ourselves to “DOING” things can be addictive and how always moving toward just being is the goal. Stacie is in a wonderful place in her recovery, she has completely changed her life and is always looking to be a better person every day. Her self-awareness is strong, and her honesty and ability to be vulnerable is palpable.  Share how you are recovering yourself - Contact me through my website MartinJon.com.  If you're interested in learning more about Stacie you can contact her through Instagram or her blog. check out her paintings https://www.instagram.com/there.i.saidit/ Her bodybuilding and personal page https://www.instagram.com/staciekdavis/ The morning gratitude page https://www.instagram.com/morning.gratitude/ Her blog http://ihadalife.blogspot.com/ Follow me on Instagram to learn more about how I am spreading the Recover Yourself message @martinjon Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/message  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martinjon/support

Carmell Pelly: Recover Yourself with MartinJon
This episode features Carmell Pelly a party girl who, with 14 years of solid sobriety, still struggles with personal value. I think it is great that Carmell can share her story because she is so often on the other side of the microphone interviewing women for her Recovery Lifestyles with Carmell show. A big takeaway from this episode, as I see it, is to hear as Carmell recalls how unsustainable she sees the lifestyle she was living. Recognizing that within herself is very likely why she produces her Recovery Lifestyles show. If you are interested in learning more about myself and my ideas around "Recovering Yourself"  simply schedule a time for a call. Understanding, and playing to her strengths, helped her embrace all that was ahead of her in recovery. Tricia only has 2.5 years and has a lot to say about recovery and what newcomers might face.  Tricia hosts the Recovery Happy Hour Podcast and her newest live platform of Happier Hour which is an online small group format for those in, or interested in, recovery to make connections and offer support. 7 TaoCast with Grace Sangat Gian
It might have been a year ago that I first met Grace Sangat Gian but we only recently began to share. I am extremely grateful for her participation in this TaoCast. Grace has an extraordinary Crystal Reiki practice and offers Akashic Records readings. You can work with her either remotely or in person. You can access her on Instagram @Grace0In0Space or through er website Grace-In-Space.com. She also woks out of the Sat Nam Yoga Chicago Studio. You can often find both Grace and I, along with many other healers, at Sat Nam Yoga Chicago’s First Friday Community Healing Circle. This TaoCast features Verse 53 which states: The great Way is easy, yet people prefer the side paths. Be aware when things are out of balance. Stay centered within the Tao. When rich speculators prosper While farmers lose their land; when government officials spend money on weapons instead of cures; when the upper class is extravagant and irresponsible while the poor have nowhere to turn- all this is robbery and chaos. It is not in keeping with the Tao.  https://grace-in-space.com/ https://www.instagram.com/grace0in0space/  https://www.satnamyogachicago.com/  TaoCasts are part of the Recover Yourself podcast series and features a guest who chooses any number between 1 and 81 (the number of verses in the Tao Te Ching) We the read and discuss that Tao verse.    I translate the title of Tao Te Ching to "The Cannon of Reason" and this series is about living within reason. 6 TaoCast with Sober Faust
I am so excited to be talking with Sober Faust this week. Sober Faust, like me is in recovery and has a great head on his shoulders. The work he is doing is deep and he has a lot to share in this episode, especially about remaining meek, not only in recovery but in life. Sober Faust has his own podcast which focuses on all forms and stages of recovery, Sober Weekly, which you can find on YouTube and his website SoberFaust.com.  I reached out to Sober Faust because I loved his message of sobriety and although at this time he only has 17 months he is speaking with the wisdom of someone with much more. This TaoCast features Verse 26 which states: The heavy is the root of the light.  The unmoved is the source of all movement.  Thus the Master travels all day  without leaving home.  However splendid the views,  she stays serenely in herself.  Why should the lord of the country  flit about like a fool?  If you let yourself be blown to and fro,  you lose touch with your root.  If you let restlessness move you,  you lose touch with who you are. http://soberfaust.com/ https://www.instagram.com/sober_faust/  TaoCasts are part of the Recover Yourself podcast series and features a guest who chooses any number between 1 and 81 (the number of verses in the Tao Te Ching) We the read and discuss that Tao verse.    I translate the title of Tao Te Ching to "The Cannon of Reason" and this series is about living within reason.
