Cultivating Change with Martin Mayorga

Cultivating Change with Martin Mayorga

By Martin Mayorga

Martin Mayorga was born in Guatemala and was raised in Nicaragua, which his family fled in the height of the revolution. They lived in Costa Rica and Peru before immigrating to the U.S.

Martin launched www.MayorgaOrganics.com with the goal of fixing an antiquated and inequitable coffee and food supply chain that has created systemic poverty throughout Latin America.

This podcast is Martin's venue to share what he's learned along the way as a father, immigrant, and successful entrepreneur--while having conversations with others who are also focused on making a positive impact on society.

Martin explains what happened with the GameStop stock to Nicky. Hopefully his helps some people gain a little insight into the mechanics of what happened and why it's so important.
***BTW, my quick mental math on the call options example was off. You could buy 500 call options @ $2 instead of only 100 shares at full price.

27. A Conversation with Bartholomew Jones from Cxffeeblack

Given the current (and very necessary) dialogue that we're having in the US, we decided to post this podcast a few days in advance.

We had a very open conversation with Bartholomew Jones from Cxffeeblack about his experience and point of view as a black man working in the coffee industry.   He comes from an arts and music background with a focus on education and community building.  His approach to coffee is "people first", which is something I really appreciate.  Check him out Instagram at @Cxffeeblack

I hope you enjoy the conversation and I welcome any feedback to Martin@MayorgaOrganics.com.

14. Reflections on the World Coffee Producers Forum in Brazil

I attended the World Coffee Producers Forum in Campinas Brazil on July 10th and 11th.  According to the website, the WCP is "an environment for discussions with an agenda prepared by coffee growers aiming to reach more sustainable ways for global coffee activity".

There were a lot of brilliant people there and engaged in the conversations.  I break down the main proposed points and give my opinion on them from the perspective of a medium-sized speciality roaster who is doing his best to support the ignored farmers in our supply chain.

Then I try to embarrass Nicky :)

9. Las Lajas Coffee Farm, Costa Rica with Oscar and Francisca Chacón

This is the first ever episode in Spanish.  I sit down with Oscar and Francisca Chacón from Finca Las Lajas in Costa Rica.  They produce about 33% of all organic coffee grown in Costa Rica (which isn't a lot).  We talk about the importance of relationships in this industry and the challenges specific to them as proponents of organic coffee production in a country with some of the highest production costs in Latin America.

8. My Thoughts about the "Coffee Market Crisis"

8. My Thoughts about the "Coffee Market Crisis"

The commodity coffee market is at a 13 year low--at levels below the cost of production for many farmers.  There has been a lot of talk about this issue in the coffee industry as well as the media.   It's not a simple issue nor is it, in my opinion, being addressed appropriately by the industry.

In this episode I give my opinions on this current coffee market "crisis" and talk about what Mayorga has always done to help producers lessen their dependence on the commodity coffee market.

4. Perfect Daily Grind with Henry Wilson

Henry Wilson is the founder of Perfect Daily Grind, a cross-platform, global network which distributes coffee content to a worldwide audience.  It's the go-to source for specialty coffee news internationally.

Henry has spent extensive time in Latin America, taking the time to get to know producers on a personal level.  Though this time spent learning first-hand in coffee communities, he's developed a strong understanding of the real challenges that producers and communities that rely on coffee cultivation face.  He took time from the SCA show to sit down and have a chat with me about the industry and what PDG is doing within it through education and engagement.

I hope you enjoy this episode!
