Mary Hahn Ward is a caregiver to her husband, Tom. Many years ago Tom had a brain infection, encephalitis. It left him with permanent cognitive impairments. In 2010 Tom was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS. Tom is a Marine Corps veteran. Veterans are at least twice as likely to get ALS than non-veterans.

In this episode Mary interviews her husband, Tom, a veteran with ALS, on being a care recipient. In the early 1990's long before Tom was diagnosed with ALS he had a serious brain infection, encephalitis. The infection left Tom with cognitive impairments which are as evident today as they were decades ago. In 2010 Tom was diagnosed with ALS.
