Living Beyond Chronic Pain: Strategies for High Achievers

Living Beyond Chronic Pain: Strategies for High Achievers

In this episode of 'Masks Off for People Pleasers and Perfectionists', host Kim Gross and guest Dr. Anna Redmond delve into chronic pain, specifically targeting high-achieving women. Dr. Redmond, a clinical psychologist specializing in chronic pain, underscores the inadequacy of traditional medical treatments in addressing the educational needs of chronic pain sufferers. She advocates for a holistic approach that reinstates connection to joy and vitality by focusing on life values rather than merely fixing pain. Drawing from her quote, 'I'd rather give people a life that is bigger than their pain than fix their pain', the conversation explores the intersection of chronic pain with perfectionism and people-pleasing behaviors, emphasizing the importance of pacing, understanding pain's signal role, and the power of neuroplasticity in managing chronic conditions. Practical strategies such as recognizing early signs of overactivity, increasing credible evidence of safety to retrain the brain, and embedding values-based activities are discussed, alongside insights into biofeedback and the normalization of not achieving perfection in daily tasks.

About Dr. Redmond:

Dr. Redmond is a trained clinical psychologist with specialties in health psychology, chronic pain management, and she is board certified in biofeedback.  She has over a decade of experience listening to women, their chronic pain stories, and moving them down a path of recovery.  Today, she comes to us as a chronic pain educator who has honed the most impactful education for women to view their pain through a new lens, change their behaviors, and reshape their lives to match what they really want.  With education, she helps high achieving women reclaim joy, productivity and sustained productivity without being controlled by flare-ups.

Martha Stewart on Steroids: Unmasking Perfectionism

In this episode of 'Masks Off for People Pleasers and Perfectionists', host Kim Gross engaged with guest Michelle Johnston, a life and empowerment coach, who shared her personal journey of moving from being a people pleaser and perfectionist to rediscovering her authentic self. Michelle recounts how she was raised in a strict religious environment where she was trained to fulfill the roles of a perfect mom and wife. She described the emotional turmoil she felt despite seemingly leading a perfect life and how she reached a breaking point when she realized she had been neglecting her own needs. This self-discovery led her to take control of her health and gradually learn to love herself, a move which not only significantly improved her life but also positively influenced her children's lives. She describes her coaching approach which is focused on breaking negative narratives and helping others find their path towards a happier, more authentic life.

Discovering Your True Passion: Reclaiming Your Inner Light

In this enlightening episode of the 'Masks Off for People Pleasers and Perfectionists' podcast, host Kim Gross explores the topic of reclaiming one’s light and authenticity. Special guest Tigrilla Gardenia, a nature-inspired mentor and personal evolution coach, discusses her journey of dimming her own light in childhood and eventually reconnecting with her authentic self. She shares her experiences about being a 'multi potentialite,' having a multitude of interests and skills, and how society's pressure to limit oneself to a specific path often leads to suppressing true potentials. Focusing on bridging this gap, Tigrilla emphasizes the importance of recognizing our deep patterns or inherent modes of self-expression to illuminate our unique path. She advises listeners to consider their roles and responsibilities in various life experiences to find their innate patterns, instead of conforming to societal molds. This episode aims to empower listeners to redefine perfection, embrace their inherent talents, and pursue their unique paths in life.

About Tigrilla:

Tigrilla Gardenia, Nature-Inspired Mentor, ICF PCC Personal Evolution Coach, Speaker, Teacher, and World Ambassador for Plant Intelligence. Her polyethnic and polymathic journey has driven her to be a music engineer, tech release manager, intentional dance producer, circus co-owner, Kabbalah teacher, and even go on tour with Cirque du Soleil.

Tigrilla has the honor of being a citizen and instructor of Damanhur in Italy—one of the largest spiritual eco-communities in the world, where a chance meeting with a musical plant led to her full-fledged Plant ReAwakening.

This propelled her into all things plant collaboration, including becoming a Biomimicry facilitator and earning a masters in Futuro Vegetale (Vegetal Future): plants, social innovation, design at the University of Florence. Her study focuses on Plant Neurobiology, the Effects of Plant Music on Human Health, Social Innovation, and (Eco)System Thinking for personal and professional growth. Tigrilla is also a board member of the BAM Foundation and advisor to the BAM Institute for Civic BioDesign.

She is the founder of the Naturally Conscious Community—an online ecosystem that nourishes plant reawakening and community support for enhanced evolution—and the seminal course, ReConnect with the Plant Kingdom.

Her roots firmly planted in the arts, communication, and the avant-garde, Tigrilla uses her expertise to empower multipotentialites, creatives, and naturepreneurs to confidently lead the flourishing lives they seek in collaboration with the plant kin-home.

Stop the Cycle of Self-abandonment

Stop the Cycle of Self-abandonment

In this episode, Kim engages in a profound discussion with her guest, Shalini Josen, delving into the topic of overcoming self-abandonment and embracing self-compassion. Shalini draws from her training with renowned expert Gabor Mate to shed light on the concept of choosing attachment over authenticity, a phenomenon at the core of our tendency to favor self-abandonment and neglect self-compassion and self-care. Throughout the conversation, they explore the rapid inclination toward self-judgment and judgment of others as opposed to choosing the path of compassion. Ultimately, the fear of rejection or abandonment by others emerges as a pivotal factor driving self-abandonment.

Takeaways:

  • 1.Attachment vs. Authenticity: Shalini introduces the idea of choosing attachment over authenticity, a concept that serves as the foundation for many instances of self-abandonment. This suggests that in our pursuit of belonging and connection, we often compromise our true selves, leading to a disconnect between who we are and who we project to be.

  • 2.Self-Judgment and Lack of Compassion: The conversation highlights the tendency for individuals to quickly engage in self-criticism and judgment of others, rather than extending compassion and understanding. This pattern of behavior can perpetuate self-abandonment and hinder the development of self-compassion.

  • 3.Fear of Rejection and Abandonment: Shalini underscores the fear of rejection or abandonment by others as a significant driving force behind self-abandonment. Many people may prioritize conforming to expectations or norms to avoid the perceived risk of isolation, even if it means neglecting their own well-being.

Overall, this episode explores the complex dynamics of self-compassion and self-abandonment, offering valuable insights into the underlying motivations and behaviors that shape our choices in relationships and self-care.

About Shalini:

The revelation on her personal journey is profound—she firmly believes that the path to achieving mother-child harmony lies in resolving internal conflicts within the mother herself.

Meet Shalini Josen, founder of Shifting with Shalini, a coaching practice merging western psychology with eastern mindfulness. Shalini’s focus is supporting parents towards fostering close, fulfilling relationships with their children by overcoming the hurdles of anxiety, conflict, and stress.

With a B.A. and M.B.A. in business, Shalini initially delved into her family business. However, the role of motherhood shifted her trajectory, prompting her to adopt conscious parenting. Today, she navigates parenthood with mindfulness as the proud mom of two teenage boys.

Shalini holds a Conscious Parenting Certification from Dr. Shefali, and in 2022, completed a short-study trauma-informed course by Dr. Gabor Mate. She also earned a Soul Care and Spiritual Psychology certification with Suzi Lula.

As a compassionate guide, Shalini empowers her clients to undergo a transformative journey—shifting their relationship with both themselves and their children from disconnection to profound connection. She believes this shift requires a new perspective and way of engaging, a path of mindfulness, self awakening and consciousness.

About Claire:

Claire Cetti is known as the Yell-Less Mom Coach. She helps overwhelmed moms struggling with frustration, anger, and yelling begin to feel more calm, confident, and connected to their kids, even in challenging moments. Claire found herself experiencing frequent conflict, overwhelm, and anger early on in her journey as a mom of 4. However, through years of personal work, Claire changed the parenting patterns that were not serving her or her family; and became the calm, confident mama she knew she could be, that her kids needed her to be, thereby creating the strong, close-knit deeply connected family she has today. This journey is what brought Claire to parent coaching today. What took her 20+ years to accomplish, she now shows other families how to do in a much shorter period of time using what she knows refers to her C.A.R.E.S. Approach to parenting, along with proven Positive Discipline Tools and Techniques. C.A.R.E.S. is an approach that incorporates positive parenting, mindfulness, and awareness, all of which Claire used in her own journey that allowed her to move from being stuck in the chaos, conflict, and power struggles to a place of being IN a relationship with her kiddos and seeking resolutions with them from a place of connection instead. She does this in her 1x1 coaching, Group Coaching, and her Mama’s Tribe Membership.

Choose You with Meeka Kruisman

Choose You with Meeka Kruisman

This was an incredible conversation with 18 year old Meeka Kruisman. She was so raw and vulnerable and quite honestly, so brave to share her story. She shared how she went from a world of pain because she did not feel that she belonged anywhere and that she never felt loved most of her life. In fact, life felt so unbearable that she considered suicide. She just felt that she would be better off if she didn’t live. At the age of 16 things finally began to change for Meeka. Through the help of a program called Impact, she had a major breakthrough and was able to see the goodness in herself and she began a journey of loving herself. She finally remembered who she was and that her true self was enough. She no longer felt the need to wear a mask to try and fit in the world. She now is on a mission to spread a message to help people to choose themselves.

Takeaways:

  • It is more painful to keep wearing masks rather than being your true selves.

  • Parents will have a healthier impact if they heal themselves rather than fixate on their kids.

  • One important thing an individual can do for oneself is to choose you.

“Remember god said with a smile, I have sent you nothing but angels”

About Meeka:

Currently I am 18 years old. I just graduated high school 2 weeks ago. I am here to share my story. The story of the things I have been through and what I know now. I know who I am and I know why I am here. I have been a life coach for two beautiful adult women. I was a student body officer, I was a leader in school. That was a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I recently moved out and I am living with some of my close friends. I will start at the University of Utah in August. I am getting my major in criminology and my PHD in psychology. My plan is to open child psychology clinics. I have been in and out of therapy for many years. I am bringing something new, instead of focusing on the past, we will focus on what they are choosing to create. I will share what I am doing so that the change ripples out. I have a passion and love for children and youth. I will also start a couple nonprofit organizations. I have always wanted to go on a humanitarian mission, but I never knew how. This will give many the opportunity to serve inside and outside of their community. We will go and clean up places all over, and just bring a little bit of light to the world. I am in love with life.

I changed my life by my choices. Each and every moment I have a choice. I am so incredibly grateful that I know this as I start my life. I am excited to share with you who I am.

Breaking Generational Patterns: Overcoming Toxic Parenting for a Healthier Future with Cari Fund

Breaking Generational Patterns: Overcoming Toxic Parenting for a Healthier Future with Cari Fund

In this episode I have a conversation with Cari Fund about the profound impact of toxic parenting on individuals and families, and we discuss strategies to break free from these patterns. Toxic parenting can manifest in various forms, including the start of wearing the perfection mask. Other ways that toxic parenting can show up include emotional abuse, neglect, or controlling behavior. It often results from generational cycles, where harmful patterns are passed down from one generation to the next. However, it is possible to break these cycles and create a healthier future for ourselves and our children.

  • We begin by defining toxic parenting and exploring its various forms.

  • Shed light on how these patterns get passed down from one generation to another.

  • Share practical tips and strategies for individuals seeking to break free from toxic parenting patterns.

  • Explore alternative parenting styles that promote emotional well-being and healthy relationships.

  • Encourage listeners to engage in self-growth and seek help if needed.

“Be the parent you wish you had.” ~ Cari Fund

About Cari:

I’m breaking the cycle of Toxic Parenting and talking all things on Toxic Parenting Awareness.

I’m navigating my struggles with what I call "Trophy Mom" syndrome with my two kids and two dogs in Miami. I love living at the beach, but not a huge fan of sand. When I’m not mothering or writing, you can find me reading, traveling, making a restaurant reservation or experimenting with some kind of beauty treatment or wellness class. I’ll try anything once!

I’m currently writing my third book, but this book in progress is a very different project for me. It’s nonfiction. It’s my story. I believe it’s the book I was born to write.

I hope to inspire you by shining a spotlight on it's just the way that it was and that’s what my parents did, and help rid unhealthy feelings and relearn a better way for future generations.

To know that even one person was inspired to break the cycle of their own generational trauma, shed their pain and shame and become the mother or woman they were born to be, keeps me sharing. I want her to win! I want you to win! I want kids to win!

Just like my book, I’m a work in progress. I’m continuing to turn my pain into power and unpack my suitcase of my own toxic upbringing. Sometimes the most helpful thing is to just be seen or heard. I see you. I hear you. I am you.

Through learning the value of self-love, I became the woman and now mother that my kids deserve. I’m raising strong, compassionate and passionate human beings to change the world in their way. That’s my legacy.

Unmasking Your Authentic Self: Why Wearing the Happy Mask Can Hold You Back with Tracy Nolin Beerman

Unmasking Your Authentic Self: Why Wearing the Happy Mask Can Hold You Back with Tracy Nolin Beerman

How often have you put on a mask and showed up inauthentically with other people? We have all done this at some point in our lives and it is so normal. We are just trying to protect ourselves from being hurt or rejected by others. Here is the problem if you have kids, your kids are watching you and they are learning to do the same thing. Why is this a problem? When we wear masks and we don’t feel safe to show up as our true selves we are not living from wholeness. When we are not living from wholeness we are split off from parts of ourselves. We don’t have joy and peace when we show up this way. We don’t have meaningful relationships because we don’t feel safe to let our whole selves be seen and this can be lonely. If you want to live fully then it is crucial to be aware of the masks that you wear and do the inner work to unmask and heal enough so that you are willing to let yourself be seen little by little.

  1. It is common for people to wear masks and be inauthentic to protect themselves from being hurt or rejected by others.

  2. Wearing masks can have a negative impact on one's ability to live fully and feel joy and peace.

  3. Parents who wear masks in front of their children can inadvertently teach them to do the same, potentially perpetuating the cycle of inauthenticity and lack of wholeness.

Living a Life of No Regrets: Why Being Your True Self is Worth the Pain with Melissa Chureau

Living a Life of No Regrets: Why Being Your True Self is Worth the Pain with Melissa Chureau

No matter what we have going on in our lives there will always be pain. The key is how we respond to that pain. One thing that can cause a lot of pain for us is that we wear masks and do not show up as our true selves. It can be very painful and cause so much suffering in our lives when we choose to hide who we truly are. It is not easy to unmask and to do the healing work especially with the busy lives we live. The truth is though that when we are on our deathbeds I can guarantee you that you will not want to look back on your life and wish that you were not so afraid to be your true self and to show up fully as you are. In this episode Melissa and I share how the perfection mask can still show up for us in our lives, but the difference is that we now know from doing so much inner work that we catch ourselves wearing the mask and we have compassion for ourselves to remove the mask again, one layer at a time.

  • Pain is an inevitable part of life, but how we respond to it determines whether we suffer or not.
  • Wearing masks and hiding our true selves can cause a lot of pain and suffering in our lives.
  • Unmasking and doing the inner work to be our true selves can be challenging, but it's worth it to live a life without regrets.

About Melissa:

Melissa is a purpose and mindset coach, mindfulness teacher, lawyer, podcaster. She uses deep inquiry, mindfulness, and principles of somatics to move beyond imposterism and perfectionism to create space in the mind, and uncover our true, whole, integrated selves.

As a lawyer for over 20 years, she has witnessed many who work and live out of alignment with their values and purpose—often because they don’t know their worth, regardless of their successes. Many feel like imposters waiting to get exposed, and afraid that who they really are isn’t enough.

As a person with 23 years in recovery from alcohol use disorder and a life-long ADHD-er, Melissa is all too familiar with what the experience of imposterism can do. After years of living behind the mask of imposterism, she now lives authentically and regularly shares her story to destigmatize both alcohol use disorder and ADHD. She leads meditation and mindfulness practices, leads workshops on overcoming imposterism and destigmatizing addiction and neurodivergence, offering hope and resilience tools to everyone who might want them.

Melissa has been a mindfulness practitioner for over 25 years, learning at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and later certifying through Dallas Yoga Center. She is a certified coach in life design and trained in somatics and Reiki, and has been leading mindfulness practices for several years. Her podcast, The Fully Mindful, explores mindfulness, purpose, and what it is to be a human among humans.

Healing Generational Wounds: Why Repairing with your Child is a Powerful Tool with Meagan Duncan

Healing Generational Wounds: Why Repairing with your Child is a Powerful Tool with Meagan Duncan

One of the most important ways to shift the parenting paradigm is to take ownership for how you are impacting your children. When you are triggered and you project your shit onto them, it is imperative that you go back and repair with your child. Before being able to repair, one must go inward and work through the emotions that are rising within you. There is a reason that you are being triggered and your child is a mirror to you to see what you need to heal and grow from. Once you are in a place of being calm and centered then you are able to repair and own your behavior with your child. You can’t  imagine how impactful this is on your child as well as future generations. You are modeling healthy behaviors in a relationship and one that your child can take forward in his/her future relationships.

“So often children are punished for being human. Children are not allowed to have grumpy moods, bad days, disrespectful tones, or bad attitudes. Yet, us adults have them all the time. None of us are perfect. We must stop holding our children to a higher standard of perfection than we can attain ourselves.” – Rebecca Eanes

Loving Your Child is Not Enough with Meagan Duncan

Loving Your Child is Not Enough with Meagan Duncan

In this episode Kim talks with guest Meagan Duncan about the hard truth that loving your child is not enough. What does this mean? We are very well-intentioned parents but the truth is that we are constantly projecting our shit onto our children and we create feelings of unworthiness in them. Even the littlest things that we yell at them for or get upset about can leave a negative impact on them. It is imperative that we do our own inner work to reparent ourselves so that we can communicate and connect with our children in a healthier way. This episode is filled with practical takeaways that you can implement right away.
