In this second episode of the Faculty Forum format Tim and I take a field trip. We record live from the St. Phillips College Fiesta of Teaching Technology event. We talk to several individuals who were in attendance about how technology is being used in the Alamo Colleges District.

Tim and I steer the boat in a new direction. We sit just with each other and talk about PBL, Chat GPT, and other musings of the semester.

Senior Marketing Programs Developer at SWBC Prior to this role, Stephen worked 10 years in the requestsmarketing communications field for nonprofits, an engineering firm, and for a public relations agency. The day-to-day during these past roles is different every day. One day you could be coordinating an event, another day you might be writing and distributing a press release, pitching and fielding media request, writing, developing strategic plans, supporting social media efforts, and more.

An often-overlooked element of the higher ed classroom is empathy. It is a skill that is difficult to teach and is not immediately helpful when learning math or science. However, Brianda Carrasco feels that teaching empathy is a crucial part of teaching.

Brianda is a proud first-generation college graduate and first to graduate in her family. She received a BFA in Theatre in 2014 and a Master's in Secondary Education with a minor in Adult Education and teaching concentration in dual credit in 2017 from Texas State University. She recently received her Master of Arts in Theatre from Regent University in 2020. She has worked in higher education for seven years and has been an adjunct with Northeast Lakeview College for 3 years. Her life has been non-stop theatre for about 15 years as an actress, director, stage manager, designer, and technician. She REALLY hopes that once it is safe, she can get back out there! She loves theatre, the power of education, walking outside, bike riding, baking, anything chocolate, loving on her two pups and cat, and reading theatre scripts.

We meet up with Julie Salazar, NVC Student, a former employee at a radio station in Laredo Texas.  Julie will talk with us about her educational journey, experience in working at a small regional radio station in Laredo Texas.

On this episode Tim and Mark tell their stories. How did they get into the teaching profession? What advice would they give college students today? 

On this episode, In we talk about reminding yourself that you are a human, and so are your students. This semester I drafted a diversity statement for my classroom. Here it is if you would like to use it as a starting point for your own.

Brave Space Statement

In my classroom, I believe the number one value is transparency. If anyone feels wronged, offended, put down, or silenced that is unacceptable. Being that we are learning about things happening right now it is easy for conversations and discussions to get heated and become personal. That is what makes this field so amazing. I want you to make it personal, I want you to get to know me and I want to know you. I  want my classroom to be a brave space. Space where people can be who they truly are, no matter what that is. If at any point during this class, you feel less than brave I need to know. Whether you tell me in the moment or tell me privately it is important that every student have a  voice and feel like they can stand in their truth. If you have any  questions about why this is in my syllabus do not hesitate to ask. I  would be happy to discuss it further.

Melissa Monroe-Young, APR, a former journalist, is the manager of Marketing & Strategic Communications at Northwest Vista College where she has worked over 10 years. She’s a member of several organizations including the San Antonio Public Relations Society of America and the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas Marketing Advisory Committee. She’s also one of the founding members of the San Antonio Association of Black Journalists.

Lisa McDaniel has worked for over 16 years at Northwest Vista College in Marketing & Strategic Communications as the strategic communications coordinator. Her expertise is in public relations, marketing and advertising, as well as graphic design, copywriting, and event planning. She is a member of the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations, the American Marketing Association, and the Public Relations Society of America – San Antonio where she is a past member of the board. Since 2013, Lisa has also been an adjunct instructor at Northwest Vista College in speech & communication studies. Pre-pandemic, she enjoyed being a member of the American Poolplayers Association and singing karaoke, which she hopes to return to again, soon.

Dr. Ralph Hanson talks to us about his textbook; Living In A Media World 7th edition.
