Stic is from the Legendary Hip Hop Duo Dead Prez. Many say they are one of the best Hip Hop duos ever. Their music merged gangster rap and consciousness into its own category and sound. Many people regard the song that Stic produced on Dead Prez's let's get free album as one of the greatest Hip Hop songs ever. Dave Chappelle used this song as an intro for the Chappelle Show. Stic has gone on to become an author, a long-distance running coach, and a martial artist. He is also the founder of Fit-Hop. Fit-Hop merges fitness and Hip-Hop into one unique and motivating experience for listeners.

Dr. Maat graduated from Morgan State University with a Doctorate in Engineering. Now she is a professor of Engineering at Morgan State University. She comes from a family of educators and activists and is continuing the work with her own community activism. She is also the founder of EdAnime Productions, a family owned and operated company that develops animations focusing on black history. One of the popular series that EdAnime has produced is called Meltrek. Meltrek explores Ancient Africa, Pre-Columbian Americas, and more.  It also incorporates the use of Hip Hop in the stories in order to captivate the audience. 

Jewel Guy, author of Dear Black Men, teams up with her husband, Desmond Guy, to create safe space for Black women to be honored, respected, heard and understood without judgement. In this healing tool, the authors guide the readers through long overdue apologies, introspective questions, and affirmations that will nourish the soul of Black women. In this Episode we explore the book and analyze some of the apologies, questions, and affirmations in the book. 

Jewel and Desmond Guy are focused on healing the Black Family. After necessary conversations that enhanced and stabilized their relationship, they decided to share their journey with the world by writing. The product of this was two books Dear Black Men and Dear Black Women. For this episode we will be discussing Dear Black Men. Dear Black Men gives Black men the opportunity to reflect and express without interruption or judgment. It is an opportunity for Black men to be heard and understood. It is a journey to create empathy while dispelling the lies, assumptions, and non-communicated expectations that are often placed on Black men. Dear Black Men is a mirror. A window into our souls. It requires us to ask the hard questions, place ourselves in a Black man’s shoes, listen to understand, acknowledge our behavior, atone for our short-sightedness, and begin again with clarity and true understanding. This book is a catalyst for establishing healthy relationships with the men so many say they love.

Albert Phillips was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and received primary education in the Baltimore City Public Schools System. He earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Baltimore City Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Print Journalism from Morgan State University, and a Master of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins University.

Upon graduating from Morgan State in 2013, Albert shifted his primary career passion from writing for numerous local and national publications to the development of inner-city youth. He served various roles working directly with Baltimore City youth while employed by the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Choice Program. In 2015, he earned a state and national award for exemplary community service throughout Baltimore City.

In 2016, Albert transitioned into education to work within the same school system that taught him. He worked as a paraprofessional, teacher, and administrator in Baltimore City Public Schools for about four years.

Currently, Albert works as a Work-Based Learning Specialist with Baltimore City Public Schools, helping students gain access to work-based learning opportunities including career exploration, professional development, and career preparation.

Albert is also founder and CEO of Free Black Mind Educational Group, a social enterprise startup that provides digital and print resources designed to empower and educate Black youth. His first self-published book, Y’all Hiring? The Black Teen’s Guide to Navigating Employment was released in October 2020.

Albert is a man of the people and is devoted to helping to drastically change the lives of youth living in communities devastated by racism and white supremacy.

Ashlee B is a Certified Hypnotherapist and Coach. Her passion is helping men and women conquer anger, stress, and anxiety for more balance and wellness naturally. In this MasterMine University episode we tackle the concept of Hypnotherapy for Black Men with Hypnotherapist Ashley B. We talked about black male mental health and how Hypnotherapy can have an impact. 

James Kagambi(KG), the founder and owner of KG Mountain Expeditions, has become the first Kenyan to summit the Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Kagambi reached the 29,032 feet peak on Thursday, May 12, 2022 after a gruelling 40-day journey. Since the 1990s, KG has led climbs on Mount Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro, Ruwenzori and the most recent Mount Everest. KG has received recognition and honors in Kenya for his long-term contributions to the fields of rock climbing and mountaineering. In 1987 KG (James Kagam­bi) began his guid­ing career in Kenya as a NOLS field instruc­tor. His patience and teach­ing abil­i­ty grew from his expe­ri­ence as a grade school teacher, coach­ing sports, and teach­ing tra­di­tion­al Africa music. Since his first trips as a guide he reached the ranks of a senior moun­taineer­ing instruc­tor at NOLS. In addi­tion to his work at NOLS, he leads Moun­tain Mad­ness trips to Mount Kenya and the Rwen­zoris in Ugan­da.  He has also com­plet­ed three of the Sev­en Sum­mits and in 1992 rep­re­sent­ed Africa in the U.N Peace Climb for the World on the Eiger. KG has sum­mit­ed the Eiger three times, was the first black African to sum­mit Denali in 1989, and was the first black African to sum­mit Aconcagua in 1994. He is active­ly involved in train­ing Kenya’s moun­tain res­cue teams. Most recent­ly he had the plea­sure of meet­ing Kenya’s pres­i­dent after car­ry­ing the 50th Anniver­sary flag cel­e­brat­ing the country’s inde­pen­dence to the sum­mit of Mount Kenya.

Growing up in his hometown of Atlanta, artist/producer Sol Messiah was inundated with the rich and energizing spirit of Hip Hop culture. Getting his start as a breakdancer, Sol Messiah built his reputation as a b-boy before traveling to NYC to join the legendary Rock Steady Crew. Inspired by New York Hip Hop legends, Sol Messiah fell in love with another foundational element of Hip Hop culture: DJing. Spending untold hours mastering the skill, and acquiring the musical knowledge required of the DJ, Sol Messiah was prepared to make the leap into producing records, the next step in his musical journey.

A talented and skilled producer, Sol Messiah eventually linked up with Atlanta legend and veteran producer Dallas Austin. For years, Messiah would work alongside Dallas to create a deep catalog filled with timeless tracks for TLC, Madonna, Monica, Boyz II Men and more. At the same time, Messiah would continue to build his reputation as a DJ, securing several club residencies and gaining popularity and acclaim for his classic Sol Messiah Mixtape series.

After separating with Austin in 1997 to pursue his own musical path independently, Sol Messiah spent years building an impressive catalog and further established himself as a go-to producer for a wide range of acts. Some of his most notable credits from this era include “Rain” and “Picture Perfect” from Chamillionaire’s platinum album The Sound Of Revenge, Nappy Roots’ “Roll Again”, David Banner’s “Ridin’” featuring Talib Kweli & Dead Prez as well as Dead Prez’s “Hell Yeah”, featuring Jay-Z.

Soon, Sol Messiah would embark on a fruitful musical partnership with a fierce lyricist named Sa-Roc. Together, Sa-Roc and Messiah have released over a dozen projects thus far, including Sa-Roc’s groundbreaking 2020 debut on Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper’s Daughter. As a duo, Sa-Roc and Sol Messiah have amassed a global reach, touring internationally and rocking crowds across continents. They have performed at the legendary Jazz Cafe in London, performed live for BBC and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Common, The Roots and Jay Electronica.

Dr. Umar Johnson is a Doctor of Clinical Psychology and a Certified School Psychologist who is considered an expert on the education and mental health of African and African American children. He is one of the most requested black scholars in America. He has been featured many times on the Breakfast Club, The Tom Joyner Morning Show in News One, a special guest on real Housewifes of Atlanta, and a guest on Cannons Class with Nick Cannon. He is author of two books The Psycho-Academic Holocaust and Black Parent Advocate. Dr. Umar Johnson is currrently workign on building his new school The Frederick Douglas and MArcus Garvey RBG International Leadership Academy for Boys. 

Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning Associate Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education, Black girl literacies, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race, culturally responsive pedagogy, and diversity, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s “2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright”, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her co-authored book [with Dr. Detra Price-Dennis] Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Toward Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces will be published in April 2021.

Her first full-length collection of poetry Love from the Vortex & Other Poems (Kalediscope Vibrations LLC) was published in March, 2020, and her sophomore book of poetry, The Peace Chronicles was released in July 2021.

Mr. William Clyde has over 35 years of experience guiding college students through their path in school from upcoming freshman to seniors ready to graduate. He is the former HEOP Director at LIU Post and is the current EOP Director at Nassau Community College. Ms. Antoinette Shirvington has over 30 years of experience as a guidance counselor at the Brentwood School District. She has facilitated tons of programs assisting her students towards college and career readiness. The founder and President of the National African American Gun Association is Philip Smith, a graduate of the University of California at Davis. He is an African-American Gun enthusiast and community organizer. He founded and started NAAGA with the primary goal to expose, educate, and motivate as many African American men and women to go out and purchase a firearm for self-defense and to take training on proper gun use.

Maynard Okereke, better known as the Hip Hop M.D., graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering.  He is an award winning Science Communicator, having received both the Asteroid Award for "Best Streaming Content" and the People of Change Award for his community outreach efforts.  His passion for science and entertainment, along with his curiosity for new innovation has taken him through an incredible life journey.

Noticing a lack of minority involvement in the S.T.E.M. fields, he created Hip Hop Science with the goal of encouraging minorities and youth to pursue more advanced career paths.  His background in engineering, acting, business, and credible work within the music industry as an artist, make him uniquely qualified to engage on a wide variety of topics from an entertaining perspective.  This is highly reflected in his weekly vlogs and daily social media posts which provide both humorous and informative #SciComm content.

With the impact of science being felt in every aspect of life and new technological trends paving the way, it's important to be able to communicate scientific topics in an easily palatable format for aspiring students and general audiences.  Maynard's distinct personality, energy, and enthusiasm for science have made him a key contributor to the educational understanding of a wide range of communities.

Oluwaseun SHOBO is an incredibly gifted individual. Fondly called The BrandMASTER, Shobo is a sought after brand consultant, premium voice over talent and an inspirational speaker. He began his career as a brand consultant whose passion is to build brands locally to gain global relevance. He has worked with various multinational brands. He is also responsible for the birth of many start-up brands; some of which have become conglomerates. With over fifteen years as an active player in the voice-over industry; his passion for its growth and a need to groom African talents for global takeover inspired him to start the pioneer training hub for voice talents in Africa (The first-ever in Subsaharan Africa), The Voice Over Academy (www.voiceoveracademyng.com) as well as the continent’s largest and most professional pool of voices- The Voice Over Bank (www.voiceoverbank.com.ng). Shobo who displays leadership effortlessly in the global voice over industry is a pioneer African member of global bodies such as Voice and Speech Trainers Association U.S.A and World Voices Organization (WOVO). Sa Roc is a Hip-Hop artist who grew up in Southeast DC. She is arguably one of the most lyrical and conscious MCs in the game today. Desmond Meade is a formerly homeless returning citizen who overcame many obstacles to eventually become the President of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC), Chair of Floridians for a Fair Democracy, a graduate of Florida International University College of Law, a Ford Global Fellow, and a 2021 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow. Recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2019, Desmond presently leads efforts to empower and civically re-engage local communities across the state, and to reshape local, state, and national criminal justice policies.  His work has resulted in being named Floridian and Central Floridian of the Year 2019. As President and Executive Director of FRRC, which is recognized for its work on voting and criminal justice reform issues, Desmond led the FRRC to a historic victory in 2018 with the successful passage of Amendment 4, a grassroots citizen’s initiative which restored voting rights to over 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions. Amendment 4 represented the single largest expansion of voting rights in the United States in half a century and brought an end to 150 years of a Jim Crow-era law in Florida.

A sought-after speaker, Desmond has made numerous appearances on radio and television, and has spoken before national organizations such as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Bread for the World. Desmond has testified before Congressional members and staffers and was a part of a delegation to the United Nations where he gave testimony regarding disenfranchisement in Florida. Desmond orchestrated a historic meeting at the White House between returning citizens and President Obama’s administration. Ron L. Lacks is the grandson of the late Henrietta Lacks and is the author of the book, Henrietta Lacks: The Untold Story. His late grandmother, Henrietta Lacks, was an African American woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first known immortalized human cell line resulting in one of the most important cell lines in the history of medical research. Her cells  advanced cancer and scientific research and lead to the development of vaccines including Polio, HPV, Covid-19 and countless more. 

Henrietta’s story has been the subject of books and movies that have included some inaccurate facts about the persona of who his grandmother was. Ron was motivated to write his book to give an accurate account of who she was as a person.

Ron became the sole executor of the Henrietta Lacks Estate in 2021 and embarked on the mission of sharing, restoring, and preserving the true legacy of his grandmother and the Lacks family, which is the subject of his book. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where he graduated from Northern High School before joining and serving in the United States Army. 

In revealing the untold story, Ron corrects the profile of his grandmother from being portrayed as a typical and inaccurate stereotype of a poor black woman. Ron wants the world to see Henrietta Lacks in her true image as an educated, beautiful, black woman that had wealth of land and family.

Kubbi is an American actress. She was born and raised in Queens, New York. She started her acting career with the Famed Children's Theatre Company TADA. She is a print model, Director, Producer, screenwriter. also has film, television, and commercials credits as well. She recently received her certification in Directing from Yale University and her certification in Contemporary Drama from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. She has a BA in History from Clark Atlanta University. She was also the 1st African American Woman in the Atlanta Shakespeare Company's 1st Apprenticeship Program at the Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta, GA. She has performed in Top Venues like the Public Theatre, Apollo Theatre, the Grand Ole Opry, and Caroline's on Broadway and the Tulsa, PAC. Her first TV appearance was when she was 15, she was on WNEW Bill Boggs show when she was performing with TADA! Kubbi has been a part of over 150 plays. She is now exploring the world of Directing through her company Kubbic Inch Productions.

Miya Bailey is a painter, illustrator, humanitarian, art dealer, and tattoo artist with over 22 years of tattooing in Atlanta. He is one of the first Tattoo artist to use colored tattoos on Black Skin at a time when many people thought that tattoos would not look good on black people. When he began his artistry, he was one of few black tattoo artists in the world. Through his art he has been able to inspire many black artists and has paved a way for black artist through his many art shows and apprenticeships that he provides to anyone willing to learn and work as a collective. Miya also set out to document the history of black art through his documentary Color Outside the Lines where he interviewed some of the very first black artist and pioneers of different art styles.  Miya Bailey is continuing to develop the art community and spread his influence as an artist and humanitarian all over the world. 

Brandon Bean is a Tattoo Artist, Navy Vet, and curator of the Darkskin Body art. Darkskin Bodyart is an art collective that showcases the best tattoos on the full range of black skin. We’re dedicated to revealing untruths and breaking the supposed limits of not only how tattoos can be shown, but also the level of artwork than can be executed on black skin. We’re professional tattooers and artists who conducts interviews and spotlights artists that work and proudly display their craft on melanated skin types.

Andrea Stephenson has a Masters in Social Work from Washington University. She is a licensed play therapist. She is the Founder of Simply Outrageous Youth which is designed to utilize innovative and exciting methods of teaching business, financial, and life skills to 4th – 8th grade students. She is also the author of 6 children's books that are designed to help parents and guardians teach their children life skills such as reading, writing, financial literacy, and science at an early age. Through her teaching strategies her son was able to write the letters and numbers and do multiplication by the age of three and author his first book at 6 years old. 

Hashim Garrett grew up in Brooklyn, New York. As a young boy he was picked on and bullied. Hashim realized that he could avoid the torment if he befriended his tormentors, and he eventually joined a gang. There was something powerful about having others fear him for a change. When he was good, nobody seemed to notice him, but when he was bad, everyone knew his name.

At 15, Hashim was shot and paralyzed from the waist down. Nothing but tragedy could have broken the spell of bad decision making. As he lay on the ground wondering if he would live or die, his eyes were opened, and Hashim decided to change. Hashim has forgiven his assailant. Ironically, the shooter was beholden to the same series of bad choices that he himself had once experienced.

Hashim has not let his paralysis prevent him from leading an active life of remarkable achievements. He majored in Investment Banking at Rutgers University, and from 1995-2001 was Violence Prevention Coordinator at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, speaking to children about the causes of conflicts. Delivering this empowering message brought about yet another transformative moment for Hashim, realizing that this was his life's work.

Today, Hashim works with a vast diaspora of organizations, providing lectures, presentations, workshops and retreats. His approach is simple: The message is positive and non-religious, stressing self-respect and the unique value of each individual. Hashim has delivered this message of hope to hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world, acquiring an impressive catalog of press over the span of his 20-year career. His social commentary is sought after throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. With a unique combination of conviction and charisma, he inspires corporate teams, non-profit associations, students and educators to live happier and more successful lives.

Nashid Ali hails from Philadelphia. He has a Bachelor's of Sociology from HBCU Wilberforce University and a Masters in Sociology from Northwestern University. He is a community Organizer and part of the Storytelling group Keepers of The Culture that aims to maintain the Griot African traditions of Storytelling and preserving black culture and history. He has participated in many different community programs in the city aimed to assist the formerly incarcerated as well as victims of gun violence through his program called Drop Squad. You can listen to his stories every Sunday at 6pm through the radio show Groundings with Brother Shomari on WURD radio, one of the few black owned radio stations in Philadelphia. 

This is our first annual Open Mic event on MasterMine. Open Mic serves as a means of self-expression that gives us the freedom to express ourselves through any format. Puzzles of Color is a black-owned family business run by brother-sister duo William and Ericka. They have been doing puzzles as a family since they were in elementary school and really enjoyed the challenge it presented and the long hours of family time they spent putting together works of art. But in doing so, they noticed two distinct problems, (1) the imagery often did not represent who they were and (2) when they liked a puzzle, they couldn’t find a frame that would fit them. So, they decided to take matters into their own hands and create a puzzle company that addressed both of these issues. The puzzles are frameable pieces of art created by artists of color. Puzzles Of Color strives to promote tech-free entertainment for people of all ages. This interactive art features the work of artists of color and hopes to create experiences and memories to last a lifetime.
