MasterMine | Episode 13 S3 | Sol Messiah | Legendary Hip Hop DJ and Producer | Legendary Rock Steady Crew B-boy

MasterMine | Episode 13 S3 | Sol Messiah | Legendary Hip Hop DJ and Producer | Legendary Rock Steady Crew B-boy

Growing up in his hometown of Atlanta, artist/producer Sol Messiah was inundated with the rich and energizing spirit of Hip Hop culture. Getting his start as a breakdancer, Sol Messiah built his reputation as a b-boy before traveling to NYC to join the legendary Rock Steady Crew. Inspired by New York Hip Hop legends, Sol Messiah fell in love with another foundational element of Hip Hop culture: DJing. Spending untold hours mastering the skill, and acquiring the musical knowledge required of the DJ, Sol Messiah was prepared to make the leap into producing records, the next step in his musical journey.

A talented and skilled producer, Sol Messiah eventually linked up with Atlanta legend and veteran producer Dallas Austin. For years, Messiah would work alongside Dallas to create a deep catalog filled with timeless tracks for TLC, Madonna, Monica, Boyz II Men and more. At the same time, Messiah would continue to build his reputation as a DJ, securing several club residencies and gaining popularity and acclaim for his classic Sol Messiah Mixtape series.

After separating with Austin in 1997 to pursue his own musical path independently, Sol Messiah spent years building an impressive catalog and further established himself as a go-to producer for a wide range of acts. Some of his most notable credits from this era include “Rain” and “Picture Perfect” from Chamillionaire’s platinum album The Sound Of Revenge, Nappy Roots’ “Roll Again”, David Banner’s “Ridin’” featuring Talib Kweli & Dead Prez as well as Dead Prez’s “Hell Yeah”, featuring Jay-Z.

Soon, Sol Messiah would embark on a fruitful musical partnership with a fierce lyricist named Sa-Roc. Together, Sa-Roc and Messiah have released over a dozen projects thus far, including Sa-Roc’s groundbreaking 2020 debut on Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper’s Daughter. As a duo, Sa-Roc and Sol Messiah have amassed a global reach, touring internationally and rocking crowds across continents. They have performed at the legendary Jazz Cafe in London, performed live for BBC and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Common, The Roots and Jay Electronica.

On his latest album, GOD CMPLX, Sol Messiah connects with some of the finest MCs in the game to create a collection of head-bopping Hip Hop music that's both innovative and inspiring. Featuring guest performances from KXNG Crooked, Sa-Roc, Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Locksmith, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Che Noir, Lyric Jones, Mickey Factz, Cambatta, Planet Asia, TriState, Narubi Selah, Murs, Da BackWudz, Slug of Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Baba Zumbi of Zion I, GOD CMPLX is a powerful and engaging project.

The album comes out swinging with the title track, “GOD CMPLX,” which features KXNG Crooked and Sa-Roc trading slick and fiery bars over an epic, grandiose beat. Showcasing the versatility of Sol Messiah’s sound, “Limitless” finds Evidence getting busy over a dramatic, piano & string-infused track. From the brassy, drum-heavy sound of “The Hard Way” (feat. Che Noir, Sa-Roc & Lyric Jones) to the haunting vocal harmonies of “Sol Supreme” (feat. Cambatta), GOD CMPLX is not only full of bangers, it’s also a diverse gallery of sounds that serves as a testament to Sol Messiah’s skills as both a producer and a visionary.

The journey that Sol Messiah began so many years ago, as a youth discovering Hip Hop in Atlanta, has no ending in sight. With his gifted ear and fierce dedication to Hip Hop culture, he continues to use his craft to build his own body of work as well as help maintain and elevate the culture of Hip Hop as a whole.

Maynard Okereke, better known as the Hip Hop M.D., graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering.  He is an award winning Science Communicator, having received both the Asteroid Award for "Best Streaming Content" and the People of Change Award for his community outreach efforts.  His passion for science and entertainment, along with his curiosity for new innovation has taken him through an incredible life journey.

With the impact of science being felt in every aspect of life and new technological trends paving the way, it's important to be able to communicate scientific topics in an easily palatable format for aspiring students and general audiences.  Maynard's distinct personality, energy, and enthusiasm for science have made him a key contributor to the educational understanding of a wide range of communities.

MasterMine | Episode 48 S2 | Ron Lacks | Grandson of The Legendary Henrietta Lacks | Author of The Untold Story of Henrietta Lacks

Ron L. Lacks is the grandson of the late Henrietta Lacks and is the author of the book, Henrietta Lacks: The Untold Story. His late grandmother, Henrietta Lacks, was an African American woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first known immortalized human cell line resulting in one of the most important cell lines in the history of medical research. Her cells  advanced cancer and scientific research and lead to the development of vaccines including Polio, HPV, Covid-19 and countless more.

Henrietta’s story has been the subject of books and movies that have included some inaccurate facts about the persona of who his grandmother was. Ron was motivated to write his book to give an accurate account of who she was as a person.

Ron became the sole executor of the Henrietta Lacks Estate in 2021 and embarked on the mission of sharing, restoring, and preserving the true legacy of his grandmother and the Lacks family, which is the subject of his book. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where he graduated from Northern High School before joining and serving in the United States Army.

In revealing the untold story, Ron corrects the profile of his grandmother from being portrayed as a typical and inaccurate stereotype of a poor black woman. Ron wants the world to see Henrietta Lacks in her true image as an educated, beautiful, black woman that had wealth of land and family.

MasterMine | Episode 39 S2 | Hashim Garrett | Inspirational Speaker/Gun Violence Survivor

Hashim Garrett grew up in Brooklyn, New York. As a young boy he was picked on and bullied. Hashim realized that he could avoid the torment if he befriended his tormentors, and he eventually joined a gang. There was something powerful about having others fear him for a change. When he was good, nobody seemed to notice him, but when he was bad, everyone knew his name.

At 15, Hashim was shot and paralyzed from the waist down. Nothing but tragedy could have broken the spell of bad decision making. As he lay on the ground wondering if he would live or die, his eyes were opened, and Hashim decided to change. Hashim has forgiven his assailant. Ironically, the shooter was beholden to the same series of bad choices that he himself had once experienced.

Hashim has not let his paralysis prevent him from leading an active life of remarkable achievements. He majored in Investment Banking at Rutgers University, and from 1995-2001 was Violence Prevention Coordinator at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, speaking to children about the causes of conflicts. Delivering this empowering message brought about yet another transformative moment for Hashim, realizing that this was his life's work.

Today, Hashim works with a vast diaspora of organizations, providing lectures, presentations, workshops and retreats. His approach is simple: The message is positive and non-religious, stressing self-respect and the unique value of each individual. Hashim has delivered this message of hope to hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world, acquiring an impressive catalog of press over the span of his 20-year career. His social commentary is sought after throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. With a unique combination of conviction and charisma, he inspires corporate teams, non-profit associations, students and educators to live happier and more successful lives.

MasterMine | Episode 38 S2 | Yanique Hall | Immigration Attorney| Founder of Hall Law Office

MasterMine | Episode 38 S2 | Yanique Hall | Immigration Attorney| Founder of Hall Law Office

Attorney Yanique Hall is the lead attorney at Hall Law Office, P.A. She was born and raised in Jamaica, and like many immigrants, she was deemed out-of-status shortly after graduating high school. Nonetheless, she had dreams of attending college to further her education, and she was eager to get started as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Yanique was in limbo with her immigration status for a few years, which led to a long delay before she could enroll in college. It was through the help of a persistent immigration attorney that finally turned things around, and she was able to obtain legal status as a permanent resident. This immigration attorney came to view Yanique as a daughter, and the lengthy legal fight to achieve her permanent resident status fueled her dreams to attend law school. Yanique earned a Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida, and she later went on to achieve her Juris Doctorate from the Florida A&M University College of Law. She kicked off her career as an attorney by representing creditors and filing suits on defaulted and breached accounts. Yanique contributed her expertise to litigating matters involving individuals and corporations being sued for commercial and retail debts including purchased debts, bad checks, auto leases, business loans, and even security agreements. Even prior to attending law school, Yanique contributed two years of work within a debt defense law firm by handling credit card defense cases and even FDCPA violations. Now, Yanique specializes primarily in consumer protection rights, uncontested divorce cases, and all immigration process matters. She operates under the consistent mission to add value to each of her client’s lives by ensuring quality and professional legal services regardless of her clients’ ability or inability to pay. Her long-term goal for Hall Law Office, P.A. is to flourish as Florida’s most prominent debt defense firm by assisting underrepresented individuals in achieving their goal of becoming debt free and helping families who have immigrated to the United States in achieving their dream of living in the country freely and without the fear of being deported. When she is away from the office, Yanique enjoys engaging in physical outdoor activities to relax and decompress. She also spends much of her free time volunteering at universities and speaking to students who are considering attending law school. Even when she is not working, Yanique finds herself continuously researching the industry so she may offer her clients the best up-to-date services according to today’s best practices. Her favorite aspect of her career is sharing the same vision with her clients and working together to achieve their dreams and visions for the future. Yanique Hall, Esq. - Hall Law Office, P.A.
