# 407 - Parkinsons and other forms of dementa are preventable - Dr Ray Dorsey

Neurologist Dr Ray Dorsey author of Ending parkinsons disease returns to the podcast.

Clearly theres a huge interest in all forms of dementia, in Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers disease and Lewy body dementia which is the disease to which Robin Williams sadly succumbed only a few years ago.

So in this episode we talk about Parkinsons disease, how it was discovered, its symptoms but crucially why Dr Dorsey and other experts believe it is preventable.

We hear of the environmental factors that Dr Dorsey believes are causing Parkinsons and other forms of dementia, including dry cleaning chemicals, emissions from cars and toxins contaminating our food.

We learn that only in a very small number of cases of Parkinsons are genetics implicated, which further points to factors outside the body that are driving this and other forms of cognitive decline.

It is also Dr Dorsey's belief that contamination by toxins is what is driving the huge spike in cases of autism in recent years.

# 404 - Why you are not happy and how to fix it - Prof John Helliwell

We're all about happy habits on this podcast and today I'm looking at happiness itself with Professor John Helliwell happiness expert who has studied happiness and the annual world happiness report every year since it was first published in 2012.

We ask which countries are the happiest and why?

Are those people who are married or in a long term relationship happier than single people?

How does an experiment involving dropping wallets in the street, teach us about happiness?

Are younger people happier than older people?

And crucially what can we do that boosts our own happiness?

# 402 - Insulin and the weightloss mindset - Dr Morgan Nolte

# 402 - Insulin and the weightloss mindset - Dr Morgan Nolte

Today I welcome back clinical specialist Dr Morgan Nolte, in this episode we talk about the insulin model of sustainable weightloss.

Crucially we explore the mindset that we need in order to achieve any goal including weight management goals.

Discover the habits needed to bring about sustainable behaviour change such as committing to a goal, embracing discomfort, tracking activities, and controlling the controllables and engaging in what is called autosuggestion, and if that term is new, guess what you're already engaging in autosuggestion when it comes to your negative habits.

This is a masterclass in how to attain any goal. Dr Nolte spells out exactly how to go about achieving an aim from moment to moment and day to day.

I guarantee you'll get lots out of this episode especially if you have struggled in the past with turning things around whatever your goal has been.

# 401 - Is glyphosate, a widely used herbicide in your food causing chronic disease

# 401 - Is glyphosate, a widely used herbicide in your food causing chronic disease

Dr Stephanie Seneff author of Toxic legacy has been a loud voice in opposing the use of the weedkilling chemical glyphosate called Roundup by the agricultural sector.
In this episode we explore what this chemical is and discuss how it negatively affects not only the health of animals in the laboratory but also livestock.
We hear of the environmental implications of its use but chillingly we also hear about how it affects human health, our reproductive and our endochrine systems.
Dr Seneff explores the damage to the nervous system in humans including neurological damage.
Expect learn of the increase in glyphosate use and a corresponding increase in the numbers of children being diagnosed with autism in recent years.
We discover how the use of pesticides and herbicides impacts our microbiome, our gut bacteria which has been linked with the maasive increase in gastrointestinal disorders in recent years.
We learn that you can't wash glyphosate off affected foodstuffs as it is absorbed into the tissues of plants.
This is a subject that is of concern and a very current one given in North America these chemicals are widely used and in Europe a decision has only recently been made to allow the continued use of this glyphosate weedkiller for another 10 years which really needs to be examined.

 # 400 - The big FAT lie - Nina Teicholz science journalist

# 400 - The big FAT lie - Nina Teicholz science journalist

This podcast is about sharing information, quality information about how to become better versions of ourselves, physically and mentally. For information about our physical health we have historicallyrelied on scientists, nutritionists, medics, experts and government guidelines. But what happens when that information is tainted, this is what we explore today as I talk with investugative science journalist and author of The Big Fat Surprise, Nina Teicholz. Nina is a force of nature who has almost singlehandedly challenged the narrative on fat in our diets and that saturated fat causes heart disease. In this episode we discover where the commonly accepted and yet disproven idea that saturated fat is bad for us, came from. We hear about a physiologist called Ancel Keys and the role his flawed science, his biases and his sheer force of personality played in influencing the American Heart Association and its dietary guidelines and how that influence continues to this day, 70 years on. We hear why researchers were afraid to talk with Nina when she was writing her book. Expect to learn Nina's thoughts on vegetable oils inclusion in modern diets in recent decades and how their increased consumption has led to worsening health. We talk about the enormous control large mutinational food companies have over western diets at the expense of our health. We learn why the pharmaceutical industry thrives off drugs that people take indefinitely, such as the new weightloss drug Ozempic which Oprah recently announced that shes taking , indeed I ask Nina what her thoughts are on Oprah's relationship with Ozempic given her decades long status as a weightloss icon. My conversation with Nina Teichloz is a real eye opener, with more than few jaw dropping admissions, I hope you enjoy it as amuch as I did. # 397 - Heal chronic pain without meds - Dr Howard Schubiner

# 397 - Heal chronic pain without meds - Dr Howard Schubiner

Chronic pain is an enormous problem across the entire population of the world, and anyone who has experienced pain beyond a period of several days will speak of its debilitating effects on their life.

Existing pain management models are exactly that, management models, and this can involve years of prescription pain medications which can bring their own issues and negative health effects.

Today I speak with a pain specialist and author of Unlearn your pain, Dr Howard Schubiner who has developed a pain model to help treat patients with chronic pain, not by managing the pain but in many cases by eliminating it entirely.

In this episode we define what pain is and learn that pain is in fact processed in the brain.

We hear that in many many cases pain exists in the absence of physical injury or structural anomaly.

Discover that with chronic headaches for example, in most cases theres nothing physically wrong with the sufferer.

We learn of the relationship between the growing prevalance of back pain and the rise in anxiety and depression.

Expect to learn of the link between poor self image and chronic pain.

We discuss the connection between childhood trauma and illness in later life including the presence of chronic pain.

We also hear about the research studies Dr Schubiner and colleagues have been carrying out which shows that chronic pain can be eliminated without medication.

Dr Schubiner is a pioneer in what can only be described as an extremely exciting and potentially transformative area of medicine and healing, I hope you enjoy this conversation.

# 396 - How to spot a narcissist - Dr Tomas Chamorro Premuzic

Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic is an organizational psychologist, author and entrepreneur. He's the Chief Talent Scientist at Manpower Group, a company focused on workforce solutions. He also serves as a professor of business psychology at University College London and Columbia University. He's also the author of multiple books including: Why do so many incompetent men become leaders.

We can all relate to working for someone whos in a leadership role who is awful at their job. The very fact that they managed to land the position is a source of mystery and often frustration to us. But these people, often men hold leadership roles in every walk of life, from the boardroom to politics.

In this episode we ask how these people do it, how do they rise up the ladder, how do they fool people into believing they are competent when in reality they are the opposite.

Find out what the traits of a good leader are and learn why women have an advantage when it comes to these traits. We discuss how leadership in the past was more egalitarian than today.

We hear why people are drawn towards charistmatic leaders who give off an air of competence and certainty, we saw a great example of this during the pandemic, but giving off an air of competence is not the same as being competent.

Discover how good leaders are able to go against their instincts and can embrace openmindedness.

Learn how to identify if your boss or even you are a narcissist, and find out how AI is making us even more narcissistic.

Plus we talk about the role confidence plays in our lives socially and professionally and how we can harness it to become better version of ourselves.

# 395 - How to slow the ageing process - Dr Sandra Kaufmann

Dr Sandra Kaufmann joins me, she is the author of The Kaufmann Protocol, why we age and how to stop it.
Now this book differs from others in this field as it barely mentions, carbs or ketones, the emphasis in the book is about maintaining cellular health because in the end we are made of cells, trillions of them.
In this episode we talk about the mechanics of ageing which Dr Kaufmann broken down into 7 categories.
We talk about epigenetics and how our lifestyle affects epigenetic drift.
Find out about why its so important to have healthy mitochondria, especially if you're a woman.
Discover some of the major anti-ageing molecules that can be taken as supplements, indeed Dr Kaufmann takes many of these herself and I challenge her on this, by asking her why a healthy balanced diet can't fulfil all our anti-antiageing needs ?
We also hear about the role exercise plays in staving off the effects of ageing.
There is a little bit of science in this episode, but its worth staying with so as you can inform yourself on the steps that the latest researchers suggest may very well help us to live healthier for longer.

# 392 - Eating your way to cancer - Prof Thomas Seyfried

Prof Thomas N. Seyfried is an American professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College. He has been very vocal about the medical community's approach to researching and treating cancer, which he believes has been taken the wrong path of focusing too heavily on genetic mutations.

We ask why cancer seems to be so ubiquitous today, what exactly is driving this disease.

We hear Prof Seyfried's contention that cancer is not a consequence of genetic mutations but that it is in fact a mitochondrial metabolic disease.

Expect to learn about Dr Otto Warburg whose ideas about the origins of cancer 100 years ago are now being proved to be correct according to Prof Seyfried.

Discover where fermentation features in the cancer equation.

Find out what happens when you deprive tumour cells of glutamine and glucose.Learn why Prof Seyfried is so critical of the medical field's established focus on the downstream effects of genetic mutations, in respect of cancer.

We hear about the impact calorie restricted diets had on children with epilepsy and what this means for cancer patients and recovery.

Prof Seyfried tells us of the laundry list of negative effects of existing cancer treatments which he believes is simply not working for cancer patients.

We hear what prompted her to study mindfulness in the first place. Throughout the interview Prof Langer gives examples of the groundbreaking research she has performed, including the famous Counterclockwise study which looked at what effects turning back the clock psychologically would have on an older adult's physiological state. We talk about the power of mindset, perception and we hear about the impact mindset had on the physiology of chambermaids. The professor asks why trauma only crops up in the literature a couple of hundred years ago when it should have been present all throught human history.

We hear about PTSD and how it doesn't apply to everyone who has experienced a traumatic life event.

We learn about resilience, the traits of resilience, the resilience paradox and why a flexibility mindset is so important.

Expect to learn what steps to take in order to enhance your resilience.

Plus we explore how the lessons learned to bolster our relience can be applied to the grieving process.

# 374 - Is generosity the key to happiness - Prof Lara Aknin

Prof Lara Aknin is the director of the Helping and Happiness Lab at Simon Fraser University. She studies what makes people live happier and healthier lives. What a fascinating area of research and so given the fact that this podcast is all about striving to acquire a greater state of happiness, through fulfilling routines, self-improvement and health and wellbeing I thought it would be more the interesting to hear Prof Aknin's thoughts.

In this episode we ask about the effect generosity has on our levels of happiness.

We ask if people who work in service of others, like nurses for example, we ask if they are more predisposed to being happy by virtue of serving or giving of their time and energies to others.

We also pose the question, does being generous make you happier or are happier people just more generous ?

# 369 - Tips to stop yourself being influenced against your will - Dr Alice Pailhes

# 369 - Tips to stop yourself being influenced against your will - Dr Alice Pailhes

Dr Alice Pailhès, Ph.D. is an Associate Lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Dr Pailhes has a partticular fascination in magic and the psychology behind magic tricks. I'm talking about how magicians use psychology to manipulate, influence, force, redirect, misdirect and distract us in order to bamboozle us with their magic skills.

Dr Pailhes' research focuses on the use of magic tricks to study the illusory sense of agency or control. She specialises in studying the subtle factors that influence our decisions without our awareness.

In this episode we learn that magic is a conflict between our rational mind, our beliefs and our emotions. We see a trick performed, and rationally it doesnt make sense but there it is before our eyes and so we are left stunned, scratching our heads searching for answers. We also learn that the brain often seeks out the simplest most energy efficient option which causes us to adhere to habits or patterns of behaviour, essentially the brain operates on autopilot which is when we are most vulnerable to being controlled or influenced. We hear about different techniques that magicians use to influence or force a person to do or believe something in order that they fall for the magic trick. Expect to learn about restriction and compliance and how they feature in a magicians act. We hear that its exceptionally easily to influence people even when the person being influenced knows they are being influenced or controlled.

The good news is we can take the psychological lessons learned in the arena of magic and apply them in the real world so that we can reduce our liklihood of being influenced.

This is an interesting discussion about how our minds work and how we are so very easily influenced by external forces aswell as internal forces and biases, while Dr Pailhes uses the subject of magic to illustrate how the mind operates in terms of it being easily influenced, her observations on psychology apply to everyday life. Indeed we are constantly being influenced by advertising, media and by friends and family. The key is to be aware of when we are being influenced so that we can own gatekeeper to that influence.

# 366 - An astonishing MS story - Dr Terry Wahls

Dr Terry Wahls is an author and a clinical Professor of medicine at the University of Iowa, in addition to being proof positive that food can be your medicine. She was diagnosed with MS and spent 4 years relying on a wheelchair for her mobility, so debilitating were her symptoms. She was faced with making one of 2 choices, to either give up on life or continue going. Thankfully she chose the latter and she dived into
researching how nutrition could positively impact her condition and went on to develop her Wahls protocol, a diet based protocol that
would see her go from being wheelchair bound to being able to ride her bike to work again. Twenty years after her MS diagnosis, she continues in her mission to help others with her diet and lifestyle philosophy.

In this episode Dr
Wahls tells us about the onset of her MS symptoms and how it impacted her and her family, as well as her professional life.
We learn about what motivated Dr Wahls in the darkest moments when her condition held little hope.

We hear about what steps she took in relation to her nutrition when she made the decision not to fall victim to the medically accepted limitations of her diagnosis.

Dr Wahls, tells us about the main driver of MS, the mitochondria or the power house of our cells, and how this knowledge helped her establish a dietary protocol that helped her rediscover her hitherto waning energy levels.

We hear about how diet can lessen the negative effects of systemic inflammation especially as far as autoimmune diseases are concerned.

We discover that the dramatic improvement in Dr Wahls condition is not an anomaly, but as a study she has carried out in other MS patients shows, changes in diet and nutrition intake can improve the health of other chronic disease sufferers too.

And expect to learn what foods Dr Wahls suggests we eat and what foods we should consider elminating from our diets.

To say that Dr Wahls condition as an MS patient has improved over the last 2 decades since she was initially diagnosed, is an understatement. In times past her cases would have been labelled miraculous. The truth very much grounded in science and reality, Dr Wahls rejected the traditional route of submitting completely to pharmaceutical drugs instead choosing to allow her food provide the nutrients she needed to restore her health. Its important to state, Dr Wahls still has MS but
her experimentation with her nutrition allowed her to initially
drastically reverse her decline, and return to practise medicine but also to drastically slow down the progress of this debilitating
disease. Her determination and her story are extraordinary. I hope
you enjoy this conversation and find as much inspiration as I did,

# 365 - Predicting Alzheimers disease - Prof Richard Reilly

You're probably familiar with having an MRI scan on your strained muscle, your grandmother quite possibly had her hip replaced at some point, and more and more of us are wearing devices that can alert us of irregular heart related events which can prompt us to seek medical attention.

These are all everyday examples of how our lives intersect with biomedical engineering. As research in this area progresses and as technology improves, the field of bioengineering is only going to become more impactful on our lives.

One of the people at the forefront of biomedical engineering research is Professor Richard Reilly who specialises in neural engineering at Trinity College in Dublin where his research focuses on the processing of signals that diagnose the human physiological and cognitive state.

In this episode we find out what biomedical engineering is and how we interact with examples of it daily, quite often without even realising.

We discuss some of the 500 research studies Prof Reilly has been involved in, including examining the walking stride and cognitive functions of diabetes patients who are at greater risk of cognitive decline than people who dont have diabetes.

We discuss research that seeks to provide a predictor of Alzheimer's disease by studying the change in a person's speech patterns over time.

Expect to learn what role neural engineering is playing in helping us understand spinal cord injuries.

We talk about how AI is already making a significant impact in the bioengineering space and the potential for it to accelerate progress as far as discovery and research are concerned.

And I ask if there are any ethical considerations to be aware of when carrying out research and developing new technologies in bioengineering.

Dr Stacy Sims is a physiologist who specialises in women's fitness, performance, nutrition and hormone related health. This seems ridiculous given the fact that women make up about 50% of the global population, but the vast majority of scientific data we have has been derived by studying only men, which means theres a glaring lack of science-based information thats specific to women.
