Can You Really Reinvent Yourself? Exploring the Truth Behind Changing Your Personality

Can You Really Reinvent Yourself? Exploring the Truth Behind Changing Your Personality

Is your life predetermined with your fate written in the stars? Or was William Henley correct when he ended Invictus, one of the most famous poems in modern history with “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul?” Today we find the answer to this very question by gazing through the lens of personality psychology with an expert in this very field as well as a dear friend to the show and to me personally Dr. Daniel Franz My name is Matthew Lostaglia and I am the host of the Real-Resilience Podcast. This show is my journey to understand the link between individual resilience our need for connection, and improving culture in the workplace. Dr. Franz may be the most prolific expert & clinician in logotherapy as one of less than 1,700 people WORLDWIDE (as my very scientific LinkedIn Search told me) hence why I am Matt, and he is Dr. Franz, or as we have come to cheerfully refer to him “Dr. Dan”, he is also an MBTI certified practitioner which is quite helpful for this conversation! Dr. Dan is also a mental health and clinical addictions counselor. Dr. Dan and I talk about what your personality looks like and why it may seem to change when your really happy or very stressed out. Dan also reveals secrets I never knew about personality and how it impacts our ability to communicate with each other. Specifically we dive into how introverts and extroverts communicate, why it typically ends in complete and utter disaster and most importantly what you can do about it even if you’re not in a position of authority. Another really fun and exciting element I have added into the Real-Resilience Podcast is audience questions. I put out a series of posts asking my LinkedIn people what they wanted to know about personality if they could ask questions to an expert free of cost! I’ll tell you what, we have had some amazing questions come in and we got to as many as we could which really brought this conversation to a new level. How to Build Resilient Teams in 2023

How to Build Resilient Teams in 2023

It is 2023. While technology is making things easier, it is also complicating our vision of the future. YouTube allows us to communicate in both long and short form capacities. ChatGPT is continuing to break through into more people's lives every day, including my own! Remote work and changing working conditions continue to rattle our sense of what it means to be a team. Can we function as a team the same way in 2023 that we did in 2013, 2003 or even 1993? Can we build teams using the same principles in 2023?With all of the chaos amid the technological marvels we are experiencing it can be hard to get back to the basics and remember that no matter what, at the end of the day, we are just people. We are just people living together, working together, communicating and striving to make the world a better place. Dr. Gene Coughlin and I discuss how we can continue to build resilient teams, perhaps stronger than ever before even as we progress forward into the great unknown. Why Goal Setting is Dead - Set Absolutes for 2023

Why Goal Setting is Dead - Set Absolutes for 2023

#1 Bestselling Author on Wall Street Journal, Amazon, AND Barnes & Noble bestsellers lists, Host, Actor, Producer, Keynote Speaker, Avid Adventurer, Winner, Kicking & Screaming Survival Competition prime-time on Fox

Terry L. Fossum grew up in the poorest city in the US surrounded by gangs and drugs. When he was in middle school he found himself staring down the barrel of an assault rifle in his own back alley. In high school, his father was killed. Before he died, one of the neighbors came up to him and said:

"I just want to make sure you understand something: Not one of your sons will ever grow up to be anything."

That's not the way it turned out.

After prevailing in multiple industries in numerous capacities, terry shares his secrets of overcoming obstacles that would hold most people back, reaching goals most would never reach, and leading people, companies, and organizations like no one else can.

Terry L. Fossum is the real deal.  He doesn’t base his teachings on theory, or merely researching what about what others have done; he’s personally led teams in multiple arenas to high levels of success.

He’s a master of creating leaders, and teaching others how to create leaders.  In a world of bosses creating followers, the organization that creates leaders will leave others in the dust.

He’s a driving force of change, helping organizations actually create the changes they need to not only survive in these challenging times, but to grow well into the future.  And, importantly,  have their teams not just ‘on board’, but excited about helping those changes happen.  Again, he hasn’t just read about it; he’s DONE IT.

He’s a goal-achieving virtuoso, able to take individuals, teams, and companies who have fallen short on goals before and help them achieve more than they ever thought possible.  He’s not just a masterful speaker, he’s a masterful inspirer; keeping the audience fully engaged, and leaving them fully armed to accomplish their mission, and highly inspired to do so.

And, finally, he’s a completely approachable, down-to-earth, nice guy who your teams will find is very easy to work with.  He genuinely cares about your organization, and about your people.  And everyone will feel it.

Why is Everyone Quitting?

Why is Everyone Quitting?

A comparative analysis between 2018 and 2021 in the reasons why people are leaving their jobs. This is critical right now because of the quantum leap we are experiencing in voluntary quit rates each month.

My name is Matthew Lostaglia, founder and chief talent strategist at Resilient Talent Solutions, a company that I started to bridge the gap between what CEOs want and what employees, or talent, want. In recent years, the desires of the employees have started to transform, and businesses are struggling to adjust their organizations to accommodate the new landscape as we can see reflected in over 6 months of record setting voluntary quit rates in the US. I believe that as a workforce the US is now shifting into the third rung of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and this must be the new baseline for organizations who are in the hunt to find, acquire, and retain pivotal talent.

Quit rates have skyrocketed over the past two years in what the masses have dubbed the “Great Resignation.” One big question is whether the reasons for quitting have changed. The good news is that we have data we can look at. I am going to compare Gallup survey results with Pew results, and we will look at consistencies over time and potential emerging trends.

Chris Rock - Resilience - Dumb Luck

Chris Rock - Resilience - Dumb Luck

Yes, the event that has swept our nation's attention away from COVID-19, from a war in Eat0s0ern Europe that could propel us into WWIII, and a gas prices soaring higher than giraffe...well you get it!

I don't want to talk about the drama, not the events leading up to or even necessarily what happened that fateful night for one of my favorite comedians of all time.  No, I want to talk about what happened afterwards. So let's give the memes and GIFs a break for half a sec and have a nice chat shall we!

Nurturing Relationships - Cheerleading Those Who Cheerlead You

Nurturing Relationships - Cheerleading Those Who Cheerlead You

Cheerlead those who cheerlead you and watch what happens to your life.

It is officially March of 2022 people!  This is incredible!  How are your new years resolutions going? Oh wait, what? New years resolutions? Yeah, you probably haven't thought about those in a couple of weeks or maybe even a month if you ever thought about them at all?

Why is that?  Well I take a look at one of the most common new years resolutions over the past 5 years that was consistently plastered across all of the socials.  "GET THESE DANG TOXIC PEOPLE OUT OF MY LIFE!"  Yes there were hilarious memes and GIFS filled with plenty of sass and attitude.

But my questions to you are...

1. What does it mean to be toxic?

2. Are "toxic" people irredeemable? Is permanency a contingent component of toxicity?

3. How successful were you in your efforts?

4. (And this is a tough one) - Have you looked into the mirror and done a self check on your toxic levels?

I propose that trying not to do something, or trying to get rid of something is actually much more difficult then seeking out something or pursuing a positive gain.  Once the consistency of food, water, and safety is established we then become motivated to lead better and more fulfilling lives and it is hard if not impossible to do this without meaningful relationships.

It is one thing to start a new relationship (friend, intimate, business, family, etc.) but to maintain it, and to give it it's proper care and attention, and to do so as a priority of life, this is where our lives change.

Our lives improve through the actions we take, especially those actions that reflect true and honest care and love for those around us.

Cheerlead those who cheerlead you and watch what happens to your life.

Dodging Mental Landmines

Dodging Mental Landmines

On this latest episode of Real-Resilience we discuss mental landmines, pitfalls, and traps that are common for humans cross-culture and time. First we discuss what these landmines are, then how to identify them in yourself and then the tactics you can employ today, to start paving a new path that will improve your interpersonal relationships, confidence, team work, while reducing stress and a propensity for rumination that some of us just simply love! (Read the last part there with the adequate amount of dripping sarcasm!)

Better Sleep - Secret Recipe for Success

Better Sleep - Secret Recipe for Success

Sleep is...well completely mad when you think about it!  Why in the world would we evolve to spend 1/3 of our days, and thus 1/3 of our lives in a state of relative unconscious when there are plenty of animal out there that want to eat us or our families, we could be gathering more food and resources, or anything seemingly more productive than simply laying there in another world.  I dive into this, some recent scientific literature around sleep, and how we can take proactive steps to pull the reins in on sleep so we can use it as another tool in our kit bag that we use to build a more resilient and thus more prosperous and fulfilling life.

The Best Weapon in the War for Your Attention

The Best Weapon in the War for Your Attention

Every entity in our world today is vying for your attention.  From the minute you wake up to the minute you go to sleep you have loved ones, professional colleagues, social media apps, news channels, movies, commercials, and even scientists competing for your eyeballs all in an effort to influence you one way or another.  So how to you stay yourself in such a turbulent environment for your mind?  We must look at ourselves and where we stand in this state of modern warfare.  How are you processing information that is coming in to you?  What tools or resources do you have to confront and manage competing narratives attempting to sway you towards their point of view? This episode focuses on defining the most powerful tool and series of actions you can take to objectively look at the world around you so that you can repel the emotion evoking headlines of the day.

My personal story of having my personal philosophies and practical approaches to handling struggles in my life utterly destroyed, becoming out of shape, depressed, divorced, and lost.  And then finding a bright light and fighting like hell to reach mountain tops never before even known about let alone possible to summit.

What REALLY Influences Our Behavior?

What REALLY Influences Our Behavior?

The world influences us everyday and in every which way.  This influence typically comes in the form of good vs evil.  We see ourselves within this construct as a force being pulled by temptations attempting to moor ourselves to ideologies of good striving to stride towards a good life.  What is wrong with that? Well nothing in it of itself, this is a fine motivation and when we strive towards good we do indeed make our lives and the lives of those around us better.  However what if this very construct, that of Good Vs Evil, is not the most accurate and is certainly not the most useful way to view the elements that are truly guiding our behavior.

When No Really Means Yes

When No Really Means Yes

I, like many of you, find myself drawn towards yes.  Whether it be at home or in the professional setting.  We may have 15 things on our plate right now, but when somebody that you love, or someone at work whom you respect leans on you to help them with something we will almost unequivocally say yes because that is how we see ourselves.  We see ourselves as people who are helpful, that are smart and competent.  But how smart and competent is it when you spread yourself out too thin?  Perhaps you're not even spread out too thin and you have the time to take on a new project, but it doesn't actually align with your goals and the vision you have of your future.  When you say yes to this thing, you are inherently saying no to the next opportunities that are on the horizon.  So, sometimes by saying no to this one thing, we are actually saying yes to the next and better thing!

15 Years in Prison

15 Years in Prison

So you've spent 15 years in prison, and you just got out. What now?  Well let's pause for a second, you haven't actually gone to prison right?  Hopefully not! But what if there was a version of you who just re-attained their freedom after 15 years of incarceration?  What if that version came up to you today and said "Hey! I have been locked up forever and a half! What have you been up to for the past 15 years?"  What would you say?  What have you done?  Have you leveraged opportunities afforded to you? Did you get a new job? Did you get promoted? Did you start that business?  How is your relationship with the family? Friends?

Live your life each and everyday as if you had to welcome yourself back into the world after being locked up for 15 years.

Dealing with an early and unexpected death is so insanely difficult.  Tacking on suicide makes it impossible.  And that's what we deal with in the community of veterans on the upwards of 22 times a day.  SFC Araujo - a titan among men, lost his battle within and took his final knee.  We love you brother and we will see you on the other side of the veil.

Perspective - Look Up & Get Some

What you know is what you know. The manner in which you take in new information is all filtered through your own personal lens - your perception.    If you have ever noticed new ideas and thoughts that align with your preconceived notions of how the world works are allowed to enter into your mind without question while countervailing thoughts are scrutinized and ridiculed for their very existence!  It's time to look up & get some perspective.

Resilience - Is It Enough?

Resilience - Is It Enough?

Unlike a cut on your hand or a break of your bone, your body does not heal itself of mental wounds.  These mental problems require a more cognitive strategy.  The skill of resilience, when applied with the proper finesse, can help you to recover from these cerebral obstacles.  But even at its best, does resilience alone do enough?  Does it get us from where we are to where we want to be?  Today, I discuss my thoughts on this very topic!

Inauguration - The Future & YOUR Choice

Inauguration - The Future & YOUR Choice

Today is all about the future and your choice in that future.  Life is the ultimate choose your own adventure and this is the most perfect example of that. If you decide that your future is doomed, it is.  If you decide that your future is bright and full of opportunities, your head will be held high enough to be able to see those opportunities when they arise.   However if your perception of the future is dependent on aspects of reality that are out of your control then you are ensuring a life of undue strife and struggle.

So now is the time,  Choose winning converts over winning arguments.  Choose pursuing purpose over pursuing cutting down your enemies.  Think like Daryl Davis - the man who converted KKK members by treating THEM like they were humans.

The dehumanization of the opposing side is what backs us all deeper into our own echo chambers.  The realization that we all have common core beliefs and principles is the way forward if we want to come back together as a nation.

Make your Goals SMARTer this Year

Make your Goals SMARTer this Year

Check out the one tiny tweak that capitalizes all of the strengths of SMART Goal setting while leaving behind the chaff.

SMART #Goalsetting is inherently flawed in its design.  In the effort to make a catchy acronym they sacrificed utility, functionality and most importantly Efficacy! I don't give two double deuces about making something sound pretty or creating catchy phrases or acronyms.  I am all about moving that dog gone needle!  You have some things that you want to accomplish.  Let's get to it! Let me show you how you can be SMARTer than SMART goals.

014 Ideas & Questions

014 Ideas & Questions

Merry Christmas Eve!  This week I wanted to talk about how powerful ideas are and how they truly have a life of their own.  Ideas spur an energy in us that create incredible action and results.  This is why it is incredibly important to be conscious of the impacts of different ideas and always keep yourself tethered to a place of open and genuine questioning.

013 Walking the Tightrope

Hey what's up everyone???  This week I was so freakin pumped about taking some massive action in so many facets of my passion projects.  It feels like we are on the verge of some huge shifts and big things are about to happen.  But I have been doing this goal pursuit thing for some time now in my life and I can recognize when I get into one of those 'Super Amped!' phases.  It is not bad at all!  It is just important to recognize and to have something to tether you down so your (my) manic 'take on the world right now!' approach does not turn into your undoing!

Ugly Bug!

Yes this week the central point of our conversation is one bug that is objectively ugly as all hell!  The Ear wig.  This little guy was something amazing, and it was really interesting to take in a profound life message from such a short and simple interaction with the world.  It is interesting what you can hear when you stop and listen.  Let's dive into some core tenants of motivation, grit and resilience, and let's do it all through our good and hideous friend, the ear wig.

009 Poor Framing

In a world so fraught and full of despair, and lock downs looming, are you setting yourself up for wins or losses? Are you constructing your mental fortress with a proper framework or are you falling prey to the "wisdom" of the day.  Today I use a real world current example of someone who has fallen prey in the hopes of being able to show you a better way!

007 Because It's Hard

007 Because It's Hard

We talk a lot about mental shifts and perspective adjustments.  The thing is, as much as I love this work and these ideas, I actually HATE dealing solely in philosophical terms when I am looking to assist in making real changes.

This is how I create REAL change ALL of the time.  When I find myself in the trenches of my own mind, or when someone tries to bring me into their trenches I frequently find myself using THIS EXACT TOOL!

006 Life is Pain - Choose Your Flavor

I know, not the most invigorating title, and perhaps even a little disheartening.  But I assure you, as we do on here on the Matt Lostaglia Show, we take these things most people see as obstacles and we transform them into launching pads from which we propel ourselves upward and forward beyond anything we could have even considered prior to the obstacle appearing in the first place.  We all have difficult paths in front of us.  The one consistent aspect for each and everyone of us, is that we will inevitably decide.  So, let's figure out what flavor we want!

Are You Good Enough? Really?

Are You Good Enough? Really?

You see it everywhere! "You ARE Good Enough!"  While I appreciate the intentions of positivity, however I make a simple demand of those looking to instill motivation.  Be Better.  We are not good enough.  Period. Full Stop.  This is why we get up everyday and go to work.  this is why we work out, why we run, why we learn, why we grow.  If you have grown stagnant and stopped growing, this is not a sign of being good enough, it is a sign that you have given up on yourself.  We are forever incomplete stories, stories being written until the day we die.

Are we good enough to try? Yes

Are we good enough to learn? Yes

Are we good enough as we are today? No

So join us in our movement to be better!

Choose Your Regret Wisely

Choose Your Regret Wisely

Christopher Hitchens said it best - We all have to choose our own regrets.  I love this and how it plays directly into the power of choice that we have.  Today I discuss the seemingly irrational emotional responses to changes in the national political landscape in the United States. Between the death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and the fall out from our political leadership we are seeing some unusually hyper emotional responses.  How is it that the response to one death can create so much fear and anxiety within an individual?  Thankfully we covered this last week, so if you didn't listen go back and check it out.  But we will briefly rehash and discuss the choices that we are making and identify which choices will lead to regrets that we will look back upon and laugh at or those that we will shake our heads at asking why did we waste out lives on things like this.

I Have a Confession to Make

I Have a Confession to Make

Yes, it is the sad truth. There is something I haven't been telling you.

My attention has been split and I have actively prioritized other events and passively de-prioritized this show. This is something that has cost me greatly. This is one venue of my passionate pursuit of my dreams and long term goals. I am back and excited to actively re-prioritize you and this show, because together we can make a meaningful and long-lasting impacts on your life and thus the lives of your family, friends, community, and the world!

Today I dive into the concepts of what matters and what doesn't. What you can control and what can you not? Sitting down and figuring out what it is that matters and what doesn't is hugely important if you actually want to live a life that has a real impact on other's lives and the world. So, if you want to live a normal mediocre and non-impactful existence then proceed as you are! But if you want something more? DO you want your life to have more meaning, more happiness and more satisfaction?

It starts Right Here
