The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast

By Matt Jardine

With over a third of our lives spent at work, not doing what we love for a living makes little sense. Yet so few do.

When asked, eight out of ten people said that they would not return to their places of work if they were given a million pounds.

How do we then bridge the gap between the two extremes: happy but broke at one end, wealthy but miserable at the other?

in modern times, is it really possible to enjoy meaningful, heart lifting work that also turns a decent wage or profit?

This is what we investigate.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Zodax, experimental Hip Hop artist

It takes courage to follow the path of The Buddhist Millionaire, the path where you are pursuing work you love that turns, if not now, then one day, a decent wage or profit.

It is a path littered with obstacles, challenges and self doubt. Few begin the journey, fewer still stay on it long enough to reap the rewards that await all Heroes on the other side of the finish line.

This path is harder when it weaves through the saturated terrains of modern music, harder still when the artist hails from a place where genre music is little understood, let alone supported and encouraged.

Zodax, my guest today, is a true inspiration, the epitome of a Buddhist Millionaire. Life could not have put more obstacles in Zodax’s way, yet still he finds the courage, heart, tenacity and time to create and share his music, music that has made it to the top of my playlists, as I’m sure it will yours.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with British voice talent, Mike Cooper

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with British voice talent, Mike Cooper

Mike Cooper and I met when I discovered he was to be the 'voice' of the audio versions of my first two books, The Hardest Path and How to be a Buddhist Millionaire.

Mike is a British voice talent who swapped big city life in London for log cabin life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

He is recognisable from his many years on air with the BBC World Service, and as the narrator of countless television documentaries and a growing library of audiobooks. A disruptive influence in school, Mike's first break in narration came at age six, when his teacher realised he could tell the afternoon story better than her!

When he's not in his home studio, you'll find him enjoying hobby farm life and tending to some charming pet goats, three horses - including a delightful mini horse called Annie - and a growing hobby farm menagerie…

Enjoy.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: Wendy Lennon, international educator

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: Wendy Lennon, international educator

As an author, I am all too familiar with the idea that conflict and contrast make engaging characters.

My guest today is not a character from a book, though as an international educator and teacher with an illustrious career she has read to and taught many to read and write. She is though, a living example of how conflict and contrast forge steadfast souls.

On first meeting Wendy Lennon, you might mistake her gentle ways as weakness, but as you come to know her, you quickly realise she is a woman of wisdom, compassion, strength and substance.

Her life story, nearly twenty years of it written in the Middle East where only the strongest seem to survive, is an inspiration.

This is a longer than usual podcast episode because, when you are fortunate enough to meet ‘elders’ like this, you want to soak up all you can.

Enjoy.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK

My guest today is David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK, a publishing behemoth.

David is an anomaly. He is one of the rare few who run their ‘executive ships’ more like a Buddhist Millionaire than a ‘cut-throat suit’.

David came onto my radar when Hachette UK bought out ‘Short Books UK’ the company that published ‘How to be a Buddhist Millionaire- 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world.’

It was an end-of-year email sent to all Hachette staff and authors that made me realise not only was David not your typical ‘publishing boss’, but a one of a kind, considered, compassionate individual with both professional focus and a strong business moral code.

I didn’t expect the CEO of one of the largest publishing houses in the world to respond to my e-mail. Honestly, I thought a scary PA would intercept it and politely decline my podcast interview request on ‘Mr Shelley’s’ behalf.

I was wrong.

And this episode is the outcome.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Dr. Aljulanda Al Maskari: surgeon and cage-side doctor

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Dr. Aljulanda Al Maskari: surgeon and cage-side doctor

Experience has taught me that ‘those who know rarely show’.

In a world filled with dogs whose barks are bigger than their bites, it is refreshing to stumble across a genuine high-level professional in their field.

Mastery of any kind takes persistence, dedication, commitment, and brutal amounts of hard work. The rewards for those who put in the effort are not only life-changing excellence (that benefits themselves and others) but also a sense of benevolence and subtly of character. My guest today is one of those rare breeds.

I met him when I walked into an MMA academy when first arriving in Oman. I have never been so warmly welcomed and only later found out, quite by chance, not only was he the owner of the academy, but a surgeon and UFC cage-side doctor too.

Dr. Aljulanda Al Maskari is a fascinating man with skills and knowledge that demand attention. But what makes him even more interesting is that you’d never know until someone came up behind you and whispered in your ear, ‘You know who that guy is, don’t you?’

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Sude Baykal, student and animal-loving business owner

Welcome back to a brand new season and episode of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast (Season 4, episode 1).

We hope you had a wonderful summer break. Ours was busy. We moved house because Sheri starts a new Head-Teacher role at a new school an hour outside of Muscat, and I was away for a month on pilgrimage. We’ve come back to work for a rest!

Anyway, on to today’s show.

They say you can see the quality of a person’s character by the way they treat both the people who are less fortunate than themselves and animals.

My guest today, Sude Baykal, is a young woman with many admirable qualities. Two of those are a compassionate heart and the courage to run a small business. She is as good an example of a Buddhist Millionaire at the beginning of the journey as it is possible to find.

Also check out our new feature for Season 4: the Featured Friend section. This is where we give a shout out to a person, small business or enterprise that has caught our eye. (Check out today's FF at 26min 37 seconds of the show)

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Regis Lima, singer/songwriter and Martial Arts Master.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Regis Lima, singer/songwriter and Martial Arts Master.

Episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired sixteen months ago amidst the dark days of COVID.

Initially, it was a way to extend conversations I’d begun in my book How to be a Buddhist Millionaire: 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world. A Buddhist Millionaire is the name I give to someone who dares to make an abundant living doing work they love.

Episode one soon gave way to episodes two, three, four… Before we knew it, we had aired an entire season. Now here we are at the conclusion of season three.

I am delighted to share today’s guest with you all.

I love all my guests, but none more so than Regis Lima. We met on the Jit Jitsu mats at the World Masters Championships in Vegas. We have been pen pals ever since.

Regis is an inspiration like no other. He is the epitome of Buddhist Millionaire-ship, an utter gentleman and a gift to the world.

If you have ever doubted yourself or thought your dreams were too outlandish and that you were too old to chase them, then this episode is defiantly (no, not a spelling mistake) for you.

Please take the time to like, comment and share this episode with someone you think might benefit. We need your help spreading the 'Buddhist Millionaire' word.

See you in season four.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Pat Rullo, radio host, author, speaker and philanthropist

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Pat Rullo, radio host, author, speaker and philanthropist

According to the Chinese zodiac, being a 1972 baby, my star sign is ‘Rat’.

They say, apparently, that a rat, when cornered, will fight tooth and nail for its freedom and safety.

In that regard, a ‘Rat’ is me down to a tee.

But I’m not proud of it.

I’ve always admired those who have an under-pressure instinct that tilts toward selflessness, kindness, generosity, understanding and peace rather than aggression.

I’ve discovered that the very best ‘Buddhist Millionaires’ have a tendency toward the noble art of compassion and they are not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

My guest today, Pat Rullo, is one of those people I aspire to be more like.

Having faced hardship, she hasn’t resorted to the shows of strength and power so often displayed when one is afraid, but used her courage to help, support and ‘Speak Up’ for others.

This is a special show with a very special human being. Please take the time to listen, share it with those you think will benefit and help us spread the ‘Buddhist Millionaire’ word.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Chris Hanson, school teacher, martial artist and content creator

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Chris Hanson, school teacher, martial artist and content creator

Positively Infectious: if these were the only two words I could use to describe today’s guest, by the end of this episode, I bet you’d agree.

In a world that can often seem increasingly divisive and cynical, Chris Hanson is a ray of light. But don’t underestimate him; he is as potentially dangerous as he is thoughtful, well studied and compassionate.

During the day, he is a full-time schoolteacher; ‘after hours’ he is a committed martial artist and content creator who spends untold efforts trying to unite divided communities.

I have had the great privilege and good fortune of speaking to many people who live their lives ‘doing what they love and making it pay’. The very best of them enjoy fascinating and varied lives; Chris is no exception.

He and I get into a ton of different things in this extended episode, and I’m certain there is a little nugget of wisdom for everyone.

As ever, we hope you enjoy this episode and that it benefits your life.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Dr. Jason Shields, Co-Founder of The Integrated Human

I often think that a great way to ‘judge a person’ (I know we shouldn’t judge, but we are all deciding about people and things whether or not we like to admit it), is to look at the happiness in the faces of those that surround them.

The people who hang out with today’s guest are very often smiling. He is a chiropractor, podcaster, business owner, deep thinker and both a coach and multi medal winning Jiu Jitsu player. Seemingly every one who comes into contact with him walks away feeling blessed and moved by his wisdom and positivity.

I hope you all, one day, get the chance to meet the fabulous Dr. Jason Shields in person, but, until then, take a seat, grab a tea, press play and be inspired.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Kris Wilder, author, coach and martial arts Hall of Famer

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Kris Wilder, author, coach and martial arts Hall of Famer

To find someone as interesting and generous with their wisdom as Kris Wilder is difficult. Every time I speak to him, listen to or read his words, I learn something new.

Kris is one of the most eclectic men I know. In his time he has been a political and public affairs consultant, part of legislative staff, a Franciscan Friar, a member of the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame and author of seventeen books. His views and ideas, shaped from hard earned experience, are far-reaching and deep.

But beyond that, and maybe, probably, because of it, Kris is one of the ‘Good Guys’. If it sounds like I’m gushing, it’s because I am, and I do so without apology.

I know you’ll get as much from listening to Kris as I do chatting with him.

This is one for the ages.

Enjoy.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Simon Morrell, Martial arts teacher, author and screenplay writer

‘You don’t get if you don’t ask’ is a sentiment close to any Buddhist millionaire’s heart. When today’s guest, Simon Morrell, messaged to ask to come on the show, it made us smile. We love this sort of gumption, after-all, it’s the sort of proactive attitude that leads to success.

Simon and I had never met, we'd only vaguely floated around the same ‘martial arts communities’ on social media before. As the team and I went about our research, we discovered that not only was he a martial arts teacher, but an author and screenplay writer, too. Simon is a fascinating multi-faced human being; a prime example of a Buddhist millionaire.

I enjoyed this interview like no other. It was fun, revelatory, and proof that, if willing, ‘strangers’ can quickly become friends.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Romany, Diva of Magic

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Romany, Diva of Magic

My guest today is magic. Literally.

Romany Romany (no, I haven’t made a mistake!) is a world class, headlining female magician.

The ‘Diva of Magic’ has previously won the World Magic Awards in Las Vegas, been the Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year, and featured on the hit TV show: Penn & Teller, ‘Fool Us’.

TIME OUT Magazine once described Romany as:  “...a flamboyant hybrid of Bette Midler and Mary Poppins... a fascinating razzle dazzle mix of magic, comedy and intelligent glamour...”

If all that were not enough stuffed rabbits inside her hat, so to speak, Romany is also a spectacularly gifted writer.

I initially picked up Romany’s book, ‘Spun into Gold’, to flick through as research for this interview. The gorgeous prose and heart pulling story that lay waiting for me inside was as unexpected as it was hypnotizing. 'Spun into gold' has become one of my top five ever reads.

Anthony Owens, Producer of Derren Brown TV, said this of the book: “Bold, brave and beautiful.  This book might just change your life. Romany is handing you her sunlight. Take it.”

This episode has been one of my favorite to record to date. The more times I listen to what Romany has to say, the more I get out of it.

She’ll work her magic on you, too. You’ll see…

As ever, we hope you enjoy this episode.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Koshu, Japanese Calligraphy Master

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Koshu, Japanese Calligraphy Master

‘Don’t seek to walk in the footsteps of masters, seek what they sought.’

In a world of instant gratification where almost everyone claims to be an ‘expert’, it is rare, like gold dust, to find yourself in the presence of an authentic Master.

My guest in this episode is Akemi Lucas, better known by her artist name Koshu.

Koshu is a Japanese calligraphy Master and sumi painter. Born in Japan, she embarked on her journey in calligraphy at eight under the tutelage of Master Seizan Fujimoto. You can trace her lineage back to the well-known calligrapher of the Meiji period, Meikaku Kusakabe.

When in the presence of Koshu and her work, you are as close to the most pristine example of Buddhist Millionairship as it is possible to be. As with all bona fide Masters, their work helps one understand the truth of transcendence; to see life, almost literally, through the eyes of God.

This is a very special episode with a very special guest.

As ever, we hope you enjoy it.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Scott Fereday

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Scott Fereday

There is more than one way to be a Buddhist Millionaire.

For example, some like to chase passions like a bull in a china shop; throwing themselves in head first, creating mayhem as they fly a carpet of faith, blindfolded, hoping it will all work out in the end (much to the chagrin of those closest to me, I’m one of those!)

Some, thankfully, enjoy their passions in a much more measured way.

On one hand, they commit to fulfilling the responsibilities that keep their feet firmly planted on ground zero. On the other, they chase their desires with no less passion, or success, than the maverick.

Given your temperament, both ways to the summit of ‘Mount Buddhist Millionaire’ are equally effective. But if you are the sort of person who wants to experience life in technicolour while living within the boundaries of ‘reality’, this episode with Scott Fereday is for you.

As ever, we hope you love this episode.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Andrew Phillips, content manager to the stars.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Andrew Phillips, content manager to the stars.

Not so long ago, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that ‘content creators’ were a ‘thing’.

Nowadays, most of us are not surprised that not only are ‘content creators’ prolific, but so too is the content they create. It stands to reason that, eventually, these online ‘artists’ would need managing like every other entertainer that preceded them.

Enter Andrew Phillips, this episode’s special guest.

Cool, humble and instantly likeable, Andrew would not approve of my ‘tag line’ to describe him and his work: Content Guru to the Stars!

Instead, wrist slapped, I’ll use the more classy version from his website: a content manager with a proven track record of creating and producing award-winning content with compelling narratives that engage with users

Irrespective of how you describe his work, he is a fascinating man with experience to share and the generosity of heart to do so, true Buddhist Millionaire qualities.

This was one of my favourite episodes to date. I hope you enjoy listening every bit as much as I enjoyed my time chatting with him.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Oxford Graduate and Karate Black Belt, Lewis Jones

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Oxford Graduate and Karate Black Belt, Lewis Jones

What better way to kick off 2022 and season three of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast than with a rising star.

In this first episode of a brand new season, we speak to Oxford University Graduate and Karate Black Belt (and much more besides), Lewis Jones, about the early stages of the Buddhist Millionaire journey.

Lewis is a positive, focused and determined young man who shows us all that age doesn’t matter when setting out to sculpt who you want to be, do and have.

His example is inspiring for both young and older alike (not to mention parents, I’ll think you’ll love this episode.)

My favourite of Lewis’ ‘wisdoms’ came during a drink break in a karate session that I was teaching where we were discussing how martial arts, beyond the skills of fighting, help us grow as individuals:

“If I can trust myself to do a hundred pushups,’ said Lewis, "then I can trust myself to finish a piece of homework."

Wise words indeed. There are plenty more in this episode.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Alice Crawford, Princess Diana's favourite ballerina

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Alice Crawford, Princess Diana's favourite ballerina

Wow! How did we get here? It only seems like yesterday that episode one of The Buddhist Millionaire Podcast aired and here we are at the conclusion of season two.

Thank you all so much for listening, liking and sharing the episodes and helping make the podcast a global success (we now air in 43 countries in 6 continents- only the penguins are listening in the 7th)

Ok, let’s get onto today’s amazing guest: Alice Crawford.

Any of you remember the 1985 film 'White Knights' staring Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov? You can look it up online if you haven’t, but it was a movie that mixed martial arts and ballet.

Ever since that film, as a lifelong martial artist, I’ve been fascinated with the focus, fearlessness and ferocity of ballerinas. You think you train hard? Step into a dance studio and try ballet for a week.

At first glance, you could easily mistake Alice as small, weak, timid. Seconds in her company, though, reveal a certain sparkle in her eye; in minutes you’ll notice a lithe power in her movements; hours later you’ll realise you are spending time with one of the most fearless humans you are ever likely to meet.

The late Princess Diana referred to Alice as her ‘Favourite Ballerina’, while her talents inspired an adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’, in which she played the eponymous lead role.

There is a ton of stuff to get your teeth into in this episode. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed hosting. Please take a moment to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Polo Patron and Polo pony breeder, Jasmine Calvert-Ansari

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Polo Patron and Polo pony breeder, Jasmine Calvert-Ansari

‘Buddhist Millionaires’ come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they even come with six legs!

My guest today is Jasmine Calvert-Ansari, Polo Patron and Polo pony breeder.

Polo has been called the ‘Sport of Kings’ and, as such, is a sport that few of us have had much experience.

A conversation I once had with Princess Diana made me realise that the differences between ‘us and them’ is one of context, understanding and degree rather than anything substantial.

The stresses of building a successful Polo team, for example, are identical to those of running a successful lemonade stool on a street corner, regardless of the amount of zeros after the initial investment digits.

This was one of my favourite episodes of the podcast to date. Jasmine is equal measure interesting, inspiring, humble and simply fun to talk to.

If you are like me, then you’ll enjoy diving into a world which you may know little about, only to resurface to realise that you had more in common with it than you could ever have imagined.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and please take a moment to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Georgie Scott, creator of Sundaze Essentials

Each generation has undoubtably felt the same, but I think we can all agree that it is not a simple world for young people to grow up in at the moment.

Modern challenges are like no other. Sure, none of us must hide underground as the Blitzkrieg of our grandparents’ era light up the sky and scar the ground outside, but today’s ‘troubles’ are no less challenging.

Pandemics, dubious government policies, failing economies, pollution, tech addiction are just some problems facing those stepping into a world we, ‘The Grown Ups’, have created. No wonder official statistics point to a rise in mental health challenges in young people.

Yet some of the next generation are finding a way not only to survive but to thrive during these times. My guest today, Georgie Scott, is one of them.

Georgie founded her beauty, health and wellness business, Sundaze Essentials, in April 2020, a time when she could have been forgiven for choosing to ‘batten down the hatches’.

Battling with her own mental health, Georgie understands that wellness must first come from within before manifesting in the body and an improved life. It is this profound understanding that underlines her business mission statement: ‘Together, let’s heal from the inside-out.’

Georgie is an inspiring young woman. It was an honour and a privilege to chat with her. Please take the time to listen and to share her uplifting story with others, young or old, who need to hear that health, happiness, joy and success really are an option in these unusual times.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with UFC fighter, Modestas Bukauskas (Post Fight)

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with UFC fighter, Modestas Bukauskas (Post Fight)

The Japanese have a saying: ‘Nana korobi ya ok’- ‘Fall down seven times, get up eight.’

It is a poetic way to say that we learn more from losses than wins.

When we overlook the story of the ‘loser’ to fawn over the glory of the ‘winner', we often miss core ‘life lessons’ that can guide and improve our own journeys to success.

In professional combat sports, as soon as the result of the contest is announced, the vanquished is more often than not discarded. All eyes turn to the ‘champion’, the next great ‘hero’ to light up the stage.

Those who come second (in a two-man battle) have become accustomed to stepping down into the shadows, to lick their wounds, hide their shame, retreat into self doubt and, possibly, pity.

But not Modestas Bukauskus.

It is a tribute to this young man that he, within his darkest hours, has found the strength and courage to speak to us all about the heartbreak of his recent defeat in the cage.

No matter what life we lead, we can all learn from Mo’s humility, honesty, courage, resilience and his compassion to share what he has discovered about ‘broken dreams’ so that we may continue to keep chasing ours.

This is an interview I have enjoyed like no other. It is painful but ultimately hopeful.

This is the actual hero’s journey…

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with best selling crime novelist, Carol Wyer

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with best selling crime novelist, Carol Wyer

Remember Agatha Christie, P.D James, Ruth Rendell? Of course you do.

I’m adding a new ‘Queen of Crime Fiction’ to the list: Carol Wyer.

Carol will probably blush at the comparison, (she’s humble like that), but I’m adding her any way. When you read her work, I think you’ll agree.

Former teacher and linguist, Carol is a USA Today bestselling author and winner of The People’s Book Prize Award. Her crime novels have sold over 1 million copies. January 2017, saw her move from humour to police procedurals with Little Girl Lost, the first in the DI Robyn Carter series.

February 2021, saw the release of the first in the much-anticipated new series, featuring DI Kate Young. An Eye for an Eye was chosen as a Kindle First Reads and became the #1 bestselling book on Amazon UK and Amazon Australia.

As well as writing crime, Carol also writes comedies because, as the ex-stand-up comedian claims, “Laughter is the best medicine”.

But more than all the above, Carol is a fabulously generous and kind soul. When we were little more than ‘twitter colleagues’, I reached out to her for some editing advice on my own book, How to be a Buddhist Millionaire. She was incredibly supportive.

I loved every second of this interview and am grateful to Carol for finding the time to speak to us.

As ever, I hope you enjoy this episode. Please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Ashley Bates, creator of The Shed School

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Ashley Bates, creator of The Shed School

Teachers: I consider them the fourth emergency service.

Think that’s extreme? Try teaching a class of marauding children for a week. I think you’ll agree.

We all have that teacher we’ll never forget, the one who changed our lives without us realising. For me it was Mr Neale, my economics and geography teacher. Who was yours?

For many children, it will probably be today's guest.

Mr Bates (Ashley) is a man of many talents: teacher, producer, actor, director, internet sensation and all round brilliant bloke.

During lockdown, as trapped parents pulled out their hair while their ‘little darlings’, swung from the curtains, Mr Bates was conjuring up a plan.

With laptop and monkey in hand, he headed down to the bottom of the garden to his shed.

And so was born the now world famous, ‘Shed School’.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Dani Ngwenya from Township guitars

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Dani Ngwenya from Township guitars

Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront: Sheri and I are killing time as we wait for the departure of our boat to Robben Island to visit Nelson Mandela’s prison cell. We turn a corner in the huge indoor market and there they are.

I’d read about them, but never seen them for real. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

The man in the shop smiled. He knew what I was feeling. You don’t have to be a great player to appreciate the coolest guitar in the world. “Can I try?” I said. The man nodded, “Sure man.”

I was about to join the list of people who had played a ‘Township guitar’. (Bruce Spingsteen, Bono- U2, Brian May, Roger Taylor, Peter Gabriel, Dave Mathews, Dozi, David Kramer, Neo Mnyunga- Black sunshine, Chris Rea, Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, SpyraGyra, Rob Harris- Jamiroquai, Chad Hollistar, and many more own a Township guitar.)

That was the first time I met Dani Ngwenya and his Township guitars, live in person. Of all the people I have interviewed, none surpass Dani’s passion, dedication and love for his life and work.

But his story is about so much more than the ‘musical works of art’ he and his team hand-make.

Dani’s story inextricably links with the early Khoisan African tribes. It is a story about freedom, self expression and the commitment to playing life to the beat of your own drum, the rhythm of your own guitar.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Matt and the team x 😊🙏🏻🙏🏻

End note: Those who know me know I am a big fan of supporting ‘small business’. The pandemic has decimated many. We all suffer, but some, depending on their circumstances, feel this cut more deeply than others.

South Africa is a country still very much trying to ‘find its feet’, politically and financially. It's people suffer from decisions and actions in which they have little say. This is not a political footnote, it’s a human one. Please do your best to share the word of Township guitars. It would be one of life’s great travesties to visit Cape Town, round the corner in the Waterfront market, and find that Dani and his Township Guitars are gone.

(I apologise for the sound quality of this episode, Sometimes though you have to take your opportunity to speak to someone when time, and life, allows. I hope you'll agree that it's better to listen to Dani on 'average' audio than not to listen at all.)

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with UFC fighter, Modestas Bukauskas

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with UFC fighter, Modestas Bukauskas

For a combat athlete, the UFC (The Ultimate Fighting Championships) is the peak of an impossibly high mountain. Many aspire to such lofty heights. Few succeed. Most get crushed as they fail.

I always knew I’d love this episode, not least because today’s guest is one of my favourite martial artists on the planet. I’ve liked him ever since the day we met and he chose not to hurt me!

Modestas Bukauskas (Aka: ‘The Baltic Gladiator’) is humble, authentic, generous and kind. These are refreshing commodities in a world which often sell brashness and arrogance as key ingredients to success.

But don’t underestimate him. He’s also one of the most dangerous men you’re likely to meet.

‘Big Mo’ is a young man on the rise. He has already looked from vantage points of which most of us can only dream. His story isn’t only remarkable because of his successes, though. It’s most notable because of his failures and the ways he has faced them unflinchingly.

This episode is for anyone who dreams of doing more with their life but can’t find the way to overcome the obstacles that keep knocking them down. You don’t need to be a fighter to learn from Modestas. You just need to be human for his words to inspire.

Mo’s ‘story’ is still being written, but what he’s learnt already is every bit the type of gem one finds when walking the ‘hero’s journey’.

Listen. Learn. Be inspired.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with tech entrepreneur Mohammed Bilal

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with tech entrepreneur Mohammed Bilal

I may be biased because I have children in their twenties but I am partial to young entrepreneurs. If it was up to me, I’d have the concept of ‘Buddhist Millionairship’ taught in every school throughout the land.

Today’s guest is a young man who, if I was a betting man, I’d put money on to be as successful as the likes of Jobs, Bezos, Gates, Miyamoto and the like.

His name is Mohammed Bilal. He is the owner and CEO of Firense, a podcast platform for ‘Podcasters who want to reach everyone.’

You probably won’t have heard of him. Not yet, I hadn’t. But after listening to what he has to say I’m sure you’ll agree that his passion, vision and willingness to self reflect will take him, one day, to the top of a very large tech and software company pile.

This episode is for young and older listeners alike (and definitely parents). There are lessons here for us all, not least the quality of taking responsibly for your life and meeting obstacles head on.

There are very few people I’ve interviewed who epitomise the spirit of a Buddhist Millionaire more than Bilal.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: home from home with Scotty Braggins

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: home from home with Scotty Braggins

Turn the world’s bucket lists upside down, sift through the contents and you’ll find a handful of wishes that show up time and time again.

One of those is to uproot and move to a foreign land, maybe build a house, perhaps on a hill surrounded by trees, close to calm waters where one can live out life in peace.

It’s a heady ideal, to escape the rat race. It’s little more than a pipe dream for most of us.

But some people, despite the obstacles that plague us all ( lack of time, money, correct circumstance etc) trust in themselves enough to chase the dream. Scotty Braggins, today’s guest, is one of those.

Scotty will not allow you to describe him as exceptional. He sees himself as run-of-the-mill, unexceptional. But he is far from ordinary.

He is as grounded and earthy as the soil he turns to make way for the home he is building, by hand, in the beautiful Portuguese countryside for his partner, two dogs and their future idyllic life.

This is a special interview with a special, ‘ordinary’ man. When you listen, you’ll hear that it has not been easy. Far from it. Within Scotty’s hardships are lessons for us all.

Each step of his journey, although not visiting temples, churches or hallowed grounds, is every bit a pilgrimage, every bit a voyage of self-discovery. Scotty’s story is a blueprint for others who would like to do the same.

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

Until next time.

Lots of love.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Stefania Indelicato of Amber Souk

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Stefania Indelicato of Amber Souk

I could not have a more perfect guest on the show to conclude season 1.

Integrity. Kindness. Authenticity. These are the three qualities Stefania Indelicato lives by and offers us as the keys to success in all areas of life.

I wholeheartedly agree with her choice of alchemic words but I would add, about her, three more: Stylish. Magnetic. Enigmatic.

Stefania owns and runs ‘Amber Souk’ (souk is Arabic for market. Think old-school. Alladinesque, dusty back streets and stalls and you have a ‘souk.’)

The most mundane description of ‘Amber Souk’ would be a ‘Home based jewellery business’, but this would be like pointing to the night sky and calling it ‘that little bit of black stuff up there.’

As a writer, I enjoy working on these intro’s, but I cannot improve the prose on Stefania’s Instagram page describing her business:

“Fine and re-charmed jewellery inspired by the magical soul of Africa and tales from the souk. One of a kind pieces with a story to tell.”

What I can do is guarantee this: if you are anything like me, after hearing this interview, you will never think of jewellery in the same way again.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with Radio and TV presenter, Robin Banks

My guest today is no stranger to radio and TV. His Wikipedia page lists an impressive list of ‘gigs’.

Once described as the “Curse of Safe and Boring Radio Programmers’ worldwide,” he approaches life and his career in his own unique unabashed way.

Theo Paphitis, business mogul and star of the BBC hit series, Dragon’s Den, said of Robin after he pitched a new idea to the dragons: … he’s a maverick and I like him.

But scratch beneath Robin’s well rehearsed veneer and you will find a deeply insightful man. He is a man who has earned his wisdom the hard way. He qualifies as a ‘Buddhist Millionaire’ on many levels and we can learn great things from him.

Every time I talk with Robin, I learn something new. He is as generous with his help and advice as he is with his limited time. I am grateful he found a gap in his schedule for us. (Not so grateful that he slayed my intro 😂😂😂😂😂).

As ever, I hope you love this episode, and please take the time to share it with someone you think might benefit.

“Only when the last tree has died,

Only then will we realise that money can’t be eaten.“

The above Cree Indian proverb inspired me to invite the latest guest onto the Buddhist Millionaire Podcast.

Italian born Alessandro Saba is the personification of eclecticism. He has been many things: massage therapist, yogi, martial artist, movement coach, world traveler, cook, waiter, eternal student… the list goes on.

His latest iteration chimed with a chapter in my book ‘How to be a Buddhist Millionaire’. In the chapter I talk about money as an illusion, a symbol. I propose that our unquestioning slavery to it has caused us to lose touch with the most essential elements of ourselves and all that surrounds us.

As I scrolled through my Instagram feed one day, I came across Alessandro’s ‘Garden and food journal’. (Link at the bottom)

It shows the journey of a man, and his wife, as they reconnect with the ‘earth’ and in turn themselves. I knew then that I wanted him to share his thoughts with us.

There is a lot in this episode that will benefit many people.

Take a listen. Enjoy. Please share with someone you know it will help.

Love,

Matt 😊🙏

👀 LOOK INTO MY EYES 👀 YOU ARE GETTING SLEEPY 👀

Could it be that something unknown is holding you back? Something so deeply entrenched in the darkest recesses of your habitual mind you don’t even recognise it exists?

It’s likely. We all do.

It is fascinating how much our thoughts and beliefs shape the outcome of our lives. Hypnotherapy plumbs the depths of our deep-seated thinking.

In this episode I speak with clinical hypnotherapist and author, Gail Marra. Gail is an expert in her field.

We tackle a lot of stuff in this episode. Listen carefully. There will be something she says somewhere that is applicable to you or someone you love.

As ever, I ask you to please share the wisdom of my guests with whoever you think might benefit.

Love to you all. Don’t forget to tell the precious people in your lives how much they mean to you.
