Humans of the Trail Episode 39 - Disovering the earth beneith your feet with Andrew Terrill

Humans of the Trail Episode 39 - Disovering the earth beneith your feet with Andrew Terrill

In this episode of Humans of the Trail, we sit down with Andrew Terrell, a man who has an incredible story of self-discovery. Andrew walked from the Apennine Mountains in Southern Italy to Arctic Norway, a journey that took him over 7000 miles and two years.

Along the way, Andrew faced many challenges, but he also learned a lot about himself. He learned to be independent, to trust his instincts, and to appreciate the simple things in life. He also made some lifelong friends and memories.

Andrew's story is an inspiration to us all. It is a reminder that we are capable of anything we set our minds to, and that the journey is often more important than the destination.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy Andrew's story. It is a story of adventure, self-discovery, and hope.

Humans of the Trail Episode 38 - Building a Beach of Dreams with Ali Pretty

Humans of the Trail Episode 38 - Building a Beach of Dreams with Ali Pretty

This week on Humans of the Trail I have Ali Pretty on the Podcast. I first learned about Ali through a friend of the Podcast Martyn Howe from Episode 1. Beach of Dreams is a visual art journey, community, storytelling and digital art project inspired by the challenges faced by communities who live on our coastlines.

I was really keen to learn more about Ali and her journey to creating Beach of Dreams and also really excited to get involved in documenting it come August 2023.

I love this Episode as a story of an individual inspired by nature, the outdoors, and art, combining these passions to create something truly magical.

Humans of the Trail Episode 36 - How to become a Highlander with Ariana Veočić

Humans of the Trail Episode 36 - How to become a Highlander with Ariana Veočić

I'm a total sucker for discovering new brands and businesses in our outdoor space. So when I learned Highlander, an events business now has a Highlander Adventure in the Lake District I had to find out more about the brand and the people behind it.

Thankfully Ariana, the Global Head of Communications at Highlander was happy to jump on the other end of a microphone and answer my questions.

Coming away from the episode I was converted in all honesty. There are very few dedicated multi-day hiking events here in the UK and I feel Highlander is onto something really special.

So if learning about new and interesting ways to get out on the trail sounds like your cup of tea, this podcast is worth a listen.

Enjoy!

Humans of the Trail Episode 35 - "Walking saved my life" with Dave Thomas

Humans of the Trail Episode 35 - "Walking saved my life" with Dave Thomas

Dave Thomas started his career on the back of his love of fitness as he launched a personal training business, which spiraled into running a popular London gym chain called The Foundry. But it was Daves's love of the outdoors, and desire to step away from, his words repeatedly 'counting to 10', for his clients that eventually led to a life living in a 400-acre property on the Dales Way trail.

Yet, this is not the crux of our story. It's Daves's battle with multiple head injuries, depression, and experiencing suicidal thoughts that led to his decision to walk the length of Britain, supported by his Wife and Daughter that ultimately saved him and shaped a new perspective.

I hope you enjoy this sincere and honest podcast with Dave, as we unpack his story.

Humans of the Trail Episode 34 - Unapologetically and authentically being who you are and want to be with Barefoot Backpacker.

Where do I start...

Barefoot Backpacker unpacks so much in this episode, from his backstory to traveling to the lesser known destinations around the globe, traveling as somebody who identifies as nonbinary and asexual, to of course long distance trails.

This is a fantastic episode with a lot going on which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I enjoyed the conversation.

The Distance Hiker Episode 33 - Securing the future of our long distance Trails with Julian Gray

The Distance Hiker Episode 33 - Securing the future of our long distance Trails with Julian Gray

Julian is in my opinion an unsung hero of Trails, with his work dedicated to the betterment of our Trail networks.

As the Board Member and Vice Chair of the World Trails Network, Chair of National Trails, and Director of the South West Coast Path Association he is a busy man and a fountain of Trail knowledge.

Julian humbled me with his clarity and level of knowledge on managing and preserving our trails and had a clear vision of a world made better by having access to trails.

I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with Julian and came away from the conversation all the wiser on the sheer complexity of challenges faced by Trail organizations and the work they do.

If you believe in the power of trails to shape communities, offer economic benefits, and make you feel great, then you will enjoy this one.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 31 – Quit your job and go hiking with Emma Schroeder

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 31 – Quit your job and go hiking with Emma Schroeder

In this week's episode of the Distance Hiker Podcast, we spoke with Emma, a coast walker who blogs about her journey on her site. Emma is currently on a journey to walk around the coast of the United Kingdom, with the goal of improving her mental health.

During the conversation, Emma shared with us the various reasons why she decided to take on this challenge, including her belief that walking is great for mental health and the desire to experience the beauty of the UK's coastlines. One of the things that stood out to me was how open and honest emma was when when it came to sharing the highs and lows of her walk, plans for the future and the Marge Simpson tattoo on her leg...

Emma also talked about the beautiful interactions she's had with other people who are also taking on the challenge. Her walk is not just about the physical journey, but also the human connections she's made along the way.

This is a super fun episode, with some entertaining blunders and strange diversions. I'm sure you will enjoy it as a break from the usual Distance Hiker programming and I would love to hear your thoughts.

In this episode, I had the opportunity to sit down with Steph Wetherell, one of the co-founders of Every Body Outdoors. Steph is a trailblazer in the outdoor community, working to promote representation and accessibility for people of all sizes in the great outdoors.

As we talked, Steph shared her personal journey of falling in love with the outdoors and the challenges she faced along the way, particularly when it came to finding gear that fit and suited her needs. It was these challenges that ultimately inspired Steph and her co-founder to start Every Body Outdoors, a company dedicated to providing plus size outdoor gear and promoting inclusivity in the outdoor industry.

Throughout our conversation, Steph emphasized the importance of making the outdoors accessible to everyone, regardless of their size or shape. She also spoke about the transformative power of nature, and how it has the ability to heal and bring people together.

It was truly an honor to speak with Steph and learn about her passion for the outdoors and her dedication to creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all sizes. I left our conversation feeling inspired and motivated to do my part in promoting representation and accessibility in the outdoor world.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 26 - Hiking the PCT with three kids, with Marketa & David Daley

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 26 - Hiking the PCT with three kids, with Marketa & David Daley

I've long thought that adventures with children need to be downsized, and have often fought against the grain of parenthood and the perceived restrictions on a once unrestricted life. No more selfless long trips away, or spending an evening out under the stars whenever you want to.

Routines, schools, bum wiping, homework, and many more responsibilities now come first. Bye bye freedom.

Not for the Daleys.

Marketa and David have trodden a different path. Choosing not to follow a common routine but to take their kids on a trip of a lifetime along the PCT and baking that as a normal experience in their everyday lives.

Sure, their journey has its ups and downs, which we talk about on the show, and Marketa shares over 155 posts on Instagram. Yet Marketa and David take this in their stride and can see the bigger picture - the huge benefits the trail provides for them as a family.

This is a story of two parents giving themselves permission to do something for themselves, and bringing their kids along for the ride.

There's surely a thing or two to learn here, regardless of whether you have children or not. So boot up, and enjoy the show.

At the end of the show, I share a new development for the podcast. Come 2023 I will be releasing a new weekly segment for the show. The name of which is to be confirmed. However, it will be a short show sharing narrated real stories from long-distance hikers.

If you would like your story to be featured, you can find out more information here and apply to have your story featured!

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 23 - Loving who we are with Charlie MacRae-Tod

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 23 - Loving who we are with Charlie MacRae-Tod

This week I am thrilled to have Charlie MacRae-Tod on the show.

Charlie is a long distance hiker, who documented his walk along the End to End trail. He also has type 1 diabetes.

We agreed to record together to discuss the challenges walking with diabetes presents.

But we also wanted to build a narrative about our relationships with our bodies and how to come to terms with our own limitations in order to appreciate our real strengths.

We both believe that walking is a powerful way to find yourself, and heal, but also set a personal challenge, experience a healthy level of discomfort, and to find our natural rhythm.

This is a fascinating podcast, and Charlie presents some really insightful thinking.

I hope you enjoy the episode, and of course, let me know what you think!

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 20 - How to make amazing hiking videos on YouTube with A David P. McEntee

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 20 - How to make amazing hiking videos on YouTube with A David P. McEntee

In today's episode, I've got hiking YouTuber and videographer David McEntee joining me in the studio.

David is by trade a videographer and content creator. He is a Wiz behind the camera and in my opinion, produces some of the best YouTube hiking content out there.

David first came onto my radar back in 2020 when he published some really nice videos on his walks on UK Long Distance Hiking. I knew he had to come onto the show as he started producing more and more content around long distance trails.

We chat about David's story, and growing interest in long distance trails, before chatting about the opportunities that have arisen from growing the channel, such as an all-expenses paid trip to climb mont blanc and a number of other subjects.

David was super enthusiastic and fun to have on the podcast and we had a blast chatting and I think it comes through in the conversation.

So, without further ado. I present to you, episode 20 of the distance Hiker podcast

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 18 - The Art Of Simply Showing Up With Abbie Barnes

I feel very honoured to be sharing episode 18 of the Distance Hiker podcast with you, where I speak with Abbie Barnes, filmmaker, adventurer, podcaster, content creator and activist, and entrepreneur of Spend More Time In The Wild.

In this episode abbie opens up about her early experience behind the lense, as a filmmaker, her business, and her walk along the National Trails.

It was the space and freedom of the outdoors that ultimately led to Abbie realising she wasn't following her compass, and also wasn't ok.

However through simply showing up, and taking life step by step, she put things together and built up too where she is today.

I'll leave the rest of Abbie's story for the podcast, but this episode is one to remember, packed full of actionable advice, stories and one to enjoy from start to finish, packed full of

Enjoy the episode.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 16 - Becoming more confident in the mountains with Chase Tucker

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 16 - Becoming more confident in the mountains with Chase Tucker

In Episode 16 I sit down with Chase Tucker, from Chase Mountains on YouTube and founder/owner/operator of Basecamp - an online fitness coaching business for us outdoorsy folks.

We go into loads in this episode from Chase's story, which he really opens up about, and how that ultimately ties into the out-of-the-ordinary life he has crafted for himself.

Chase is a really grounded individual, who clearly has a deep, and profound interest in movement, learning, and self-development. He considers himself an all-rounder outdoor enthusiast and climbs, skis, snowboards, hikes, mountaineers, and more.

This episode certainly is less about long-distance hiking, and more of a deep dive into somebody, in my opinion, who makes some of the freshest, and most helpful hiking videos on the internet, while living a remarkable life.

Enjoy

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 15: Walking 11,000 miles around the coast of Britain with Chris Howard

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 15: Walking 11,000 miles around the coast of Britain with Chris Howard

This week I am thrilled to bring to you Chris Howard - probably better known as Chris the Coast Walker

Chris is well known to our community of long distance hikers over on UK Long Distance Hiking, thanks to his frequent updates while walking the Coastline of Britain. And about that walk. Chris Howard undertook a remarkable feat of endurance, both mentally and physically when he decided to walk 11,000 miles around Blighty. Chris set off from Heacham, Norfolk back in 2020. His plans were disrupted twice by lockdowns, but he persevered through the seasons and endless challenges.

What I found remarkable about Chris was the urgency, and spontaneity of his walking. Only 3 weeks went by after deciding to walk the coast, to Chris actually leaving. His tendency to take action quickly, and decisively on ideas and plans serve Chris well. Not only has Chris now finished his Coast Walk, he is now planning more human-powered adventures following the same route - but this time rowing as part of the GB Row Challenge. Good luck Chris!

This episode is brought to you by Trail Prints. Celebrate your walking achievements with your new hiking-inspired personalised artwork, available in A3 and A4 with free UK delivery.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 14: Tales From The Big Trails With Martyn Howe

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 14: Tales From The Big Trails With Martyn Howe

On this episode, I am so excited to welcome Martyn Howe to the microphone, as we talk about his story of walking all the big trails in England, Scotland and Wales.

Martyn shares how he fits walking into his life and around his career, and his decision to commit to walking the big trails, fitting them in around family and work commitments.

As with all of our guests, my talk with Martyn focused on his story, his unique experiences on the trails, and how that rich experience ultimately bleeds into his everyday life. His story will feel familiar, involving loss, regrowth, and of course self-discovery.

Of course, we talk about Martyn's book - Tails from the big trails by vertebrate publishing. The book itself, in Martyn's words, a forty-year quest to walk the iconic long distance trails of England, Scotland and Wales.

You can learn more about Martyn and purchase his book on his website at https://trailplanner.co.uk/

Martyn is also on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/trail_planner/) and of course you can buy his book, direct if possible from Vertibrate Publishing https://www.adventurebooks.com/products/tales_from_the_big_trailsI

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 13: Overcoming fear with Wayne Mullane

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 13: Overcoming fear with Wayne Mullane

Wayne Mullane is a self-published author, and relative newcomer to hiking and the outdoors, which is exactly what he speaks about in his book Adventure Dayze.

I really enjoyed talking with Wayne as he shared a very fresh story of how his interest in hiking had developed, and subsequently lead to him making the decision to walk up Ben Nevis

What makes this interesting is that Wayne has a fear of heights. I was perplexed by this at first, thinking that a fear of heights is a fear of looking down at a sheer drop, but for Wayne, it’s also a fear of just being high up and exposed, such as on the top of a mountain.

Waynes story is one of overcoming adversity. We also discuss his future hiking plans, and a bit about his book.

So without further ado, I bring you episode 13 of the Distance Hiker podcast.

Ursula Martin walked 5,500 miles across Europe starting in Ukraine and finishing back in the UK in 2021.

Before that Ursula walked 3700 miles across Wales. It's safe to say Ursula has some miles under her belt and many incredible stories from the trail, some of which she kindly shares on this episode of the Distance Hiker Podcast.

I had a great time sharing some time with Ursula, who unpacked her story and the humble, yet life of adventure, always done on a shoestring.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 8: Walking ultras with Rebecca the Rambler

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 8: Walking ultras with Rebecca the Rambler

In today's episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Rebecca The Rambler.

When i first started looking for Podcast guests I realized that my first 6 episodes were guys. Not wanting my podcast to be a guy who talks to guys about hiking, I looked for some female guests to talk to. I want a balance, a bit like on our Facebook community.

So, I decided to post asking for suggestions!

And Rebecca replied and what a guest she was!

I had a lovely time talking with Rebecca, honestly, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat after our talk.

Why? Well because she was so interesting. Not only is Rebecca a keen long distance walker, she is also an ultra-marathon walker, AND the Chair of the Ramblers association!

So guess what we spoke about? Yes, that's right, all of the above!

We had a great conversation dissecting the ins and outs of Ultramarathon walking, something which was totally new to me. We then moved on to talking about outdoor gear and how many brands totally under-represent many potential customers, and how Rebecca has overcome this. Finally, we move on to talking about the Ramblers Association, and the role they place in opening up places for us to walk, and all they do.

I hope you enjoy this interesting conversation with Rebecca. I think it's a great episode and have no doubt you will enjoy it.

Vicky is a Nordic Walker by profession, who changed career to run Bristol Nordic Walking for some years, before deciding to start the Let's Walk Bristol festival which is from the 1st to 3rd October 2021.

This episode is jam-packed with information on Nordic Walking as I try to figure out exactly what it is. Hint - It's a really good form of exercise if you dislike running!

We go on to discuss the Let's Walk Bristol festival, and how it came about before talking about Vicky's book, which is due next year.

I hope you enjoy the podcast and don't forget to rate it on Apple Podcasts or follow on Spotify.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 6: A Lesson In Guerilla Geography With Daniel Raven-Ellison

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 6: A Lesson In Guerilla Geography With Daniel Raven-Ellison

Episode 6 of the Distance Hiker podcast features Daniel Raven-Ellison, a Guerilla Geographer who through numerous interesting, creative, and often disruptive projects dares us to see the world differently.

Some examples of his work involve walking across the UK wearing a device that measures his emotions to see how they differ in rural, and urban environments to his latest work with Slow ways. Slow Ways is an incentive to develop interconnected towns, villages, and cities, which can be reached via human-powered transport using permissive rights of way.s

My talk with daniel was thoroughly interesting and really challenged me to look at the world through a different lens.

If learning about our landscapes and the challenges, and opportunities they present is your thing then you will enjoy this episode.

Thanks for joining me on Episode 6. I hope you enjoy the show.

The Samaritans are a charity that offer a listening ear in time of need. The volunteers are available 24/7 to take calls and simply be present with anyone who is struggling.

This podcast was a delight to record. David comes with his own personal ray of sunshine, and shares an incredible story of why and how he is doing this walk,. We finish with an honest look into what it's like to train as, and become a Samaritan.

I hope you enjoy Episode 4 of the Distance Hiker podcast.

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 3: Walking 300 Miles And Making 300 Smiles With Katy Ellis

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 3: Walking 300 Miles And Making 300 Smiles With Katy Ellis

Episode 3 features our latest guest Katy Ellis, who has not long returned from a 300 mile walk along the Essex and Norfolk coastlines.

Katy, 20 who is a student at Exeter University, studying Ecology, walked to raise awareness of conservation and ecological issues, and solutions with young people.

Not only did she walk 300 miles, she also spoke to 300 (and probably more) school children along the route in organised school visits to inspire young people to take an interest in ecology, history and adventure.

It was a delight to speak with Katy, who was full of great stories from her trip, and some wonderful insights into female adventure, and of course ecology.

Thanks for joining me on episode 3 Katy. I look forward to sharing the episode tomorrow evening (Now available on iTunes!)

The Distance Hiker Podcast Episode 1: A Walk Around The UK With Chris and His Dog, Moose

Episode 1: I had the pleasure of interviewing Chris, and Moose for Episode 1 of the Distance Hiker  Podcast. Chris took a chance on circumstance and decided to take on a coastal walk around the United Kingdom, starting back in June 2018. In this Podcast, we unpack what it takes to do such an involved walk, not just for himself, but with a large, and very lovely labrador mastiff, named Moose. I hope you enjoy the show with Chris and Moose.
