Jobstickers Podcast #35: Tips for Parents Looking for Work – Live Jobsticker’s Jobseeker Resource Show on LinkedIn (Episode 23)
LISTEN: For the 35th installment of the MJW Careers' Jobsticker's podcast, I talk some tips for those parents out there who are looking for work and trying to juggle the loads on the Live Jobsticker’s Jobseeker Resource Show on LinkedIn (Episode 23).
I wanted to offer a couple of strategies for those parents out there who may have been recently made furloughed or redundant, and are now at home with their little ones all day, trying to balance schedules from the time they wake up until it’s bedtime.
You know you need to include some job hunting time, right? Progress is key. Here are some ideas to stay productive to ensure you’re trying to get back into the workforce properly.
While taking a class is a good idea, it goes with the old adage that everyone should be doing some sort of continuing education or training anyways if they want to stay ahead of the competition. So that’s the most obvious! Having said that, I also always preach to donate time for free for some experiential learning. This parallels with that whole freelancing/gig economist thinking where you essentially are filling the gap with relevant work still, albeit on a consultancy (possibly even contractual) basis. Start planting seeds to solicit sales from friends, family, or social network connections. Build a portfolio. Read industry blogs or trades. Stay current and relevant. Then, filter these wonderfully new attained skills into your resume when you start your job hunt again. Plus, this is a wonderful way to avoid the whole “what have you been doing since…” question on your resume from the recruiter or hiring manager. Now you can speak to it with confidence!
Some other ideas can be:
Consultancy, contract, temporary or free internship employment
Virtual learning sessions via podcasts, workshops, or webinars
Volunteerism – both in the community or for a friend with a business
Entrepreneurial ventures (again, possibly parlaying contract gig work into a full-time outfit)
Projects – both freelance or from former employers/colleagues requiring your expertise
Now, what about that resume gap? Employment gaps are a red flag for most recruiters, but there are ways to help reduce the burden of an employment gap. Especially in a post-pandemic world, most employers will understand and even be empathetic to the candidate whose gap was caused by the global health crisis.

👉 Opt for free experiential learning like internships, volunteer or work freelance projects for friends, find membership groups and industry networking opportunities, and look out for continuing education and upskilling courses.
👉 The candidate should research his or her new career field/job target.
👉 Prioritize, then stick to a consistent schedule. Sticktoitness is key to success.
👉 Your goal is to understand the role and industry inside and out so eventually you can become an SME.
👉 Think about your situation from the hiring manager's POV.

I always use the 3-pronged approach when thinking about if a line should be added to the resume – does it relate to the job target, is it a metric or KPI with quantifiable impact (even if we do not have a physical number to use), or is it just a really neat or unique story that makes you, you?!
✅ How do I list Latin honors on a resume?
▶️▶️▶️ Keep it short and sweet! One to two lines maximum! Example: BA, Latin (Cum Laude), University of Notre Dame

It's imperative you list your skills so the #hiringmanagers and #recruiters can:
✔️ Find you in a pool of hundreds, possibly thousands, of candidates
✔️ Ensure your resume gets read by their actual eyeballs before the applicant tracking system kicks you to the curb
✔️ Feel a sense of resonation by your keyword choice so they can say, "wow this candidate aligns with the open role"
✔️ Like that you're listing words of processes, methodologies, operational skills, leadership strategies or styles, or technical proficiencies that aim with the opening
✔️ Know you are passing the 6-second eye test by having the proper resume format intact with a core competencies section
Some tips:
✅ Add buzzwords you can find from the #jobdescriptions or LinkedIn endorsements section
✅ Incorporate keywords for the digital application process so you can beat the #ATS
✅ Continue to add skills to the resume as you acquire more experience

➡️ Help them understand what life experience has made you feel like part of their tribe

➡️ Diagnose a potential employer problem and explain to them how you’re going to alleviate their pain
➡️ How will you know what your hiring manager’s biggest problem is
➡️ Think about what your possible future boss is up against in his or her job
➡️ If the organization is growing fast, they need help keeping up
➡️ If the organization is large, it may be slow to react to market changes
➡️ Every organization has pain! Identify it and let the potential boss know how you will help ease the pain
❇️ Goal? Try to draw them in and create an emotional reaction, which can convert into a connection. Now you’ll get the request for an interview.
