The Walking Dead finally wrapped up Season 10 on Sunday night, as AMC also premiered the new, YA-ish spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The latter introduces us to the long-teased organization known as CRM, while the former featured the first appearance of a badass character sporting an iron mask and wielding two short scythes. Or at least, it's this character's first appearance in the mask. Smart money says that this is either the return of a fan-favorite character who has been missing for several years, or the TV premiere of someone who has thus far been relegated to one of the other Walking Dead mediums - the comic series, or perhaps even one of the Skybound/Telltale video games. Forbes has some thoughts on who might be under the mask, which you can read here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/10/05/so-who-was-the-iron-masked-person-in-the-walking-dead-finale/

Looking back on 20 years of X-Men movies is a tremendous experience. It encompasses many movies, featuring amazing casts, ultimately of widely varying quality. The first X-Men heralded the dawn of Marvel's cinematic empire, while the classic Logan ended the series on a stellar note. The movies in between ran the gamut from fun and exciting, to dull and ponderous. But overshadowing the legacy of the X-Men movies, remain the many traumas and alleged abuses by the controversial producer who has left a toxic stain on these, and other movies: Bryan Singer. For more details, see this piece in the Hollywood Reporter: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/bryan-singers-traumatic-x-men-set-movie-created-a-monster-1305081

What happens when a tedious linewide crossover event bumps up against an inter-line group event being rebooted by a smarmy, entitled creator? The result is Empyre: X-Men #1, a soulless piece of literary junk food that wears its disgust for itself on its sleeve. This book only exists to satiate the most desperate comic book addicts, who need a cheap hit to fulfill their OCD. As Jesse Pinkman once said of the meth he and Walter White sold on Breaking Bad, this is poison for people who don't care. Pulp this trash.

The smoke is starting to clear after Tom King's unfortunate attack on Jae Lee, as King apologize and owned up to his mistakes. But what exactly is going on at IDW Publishing? Specifically, why is their new publisher Jud Myers so toxic to the retail community that he had to be placed on administrative leave 5 days into his new position? Is IDW actually attempting to sabotage themselves, or is this a massive practical joke, or just what is going on? During a pandemic and worldwide financial crisis, can a small publisher that was bleeding money before lockdown afford to start making catastrophic errors of this magnitude?

Comic Con 2020 , or Comic Con at Home, is officially a failed experiment. The numbers don't lie, and what little we saw from the actual comic publishers was awful behavior from pros in lieu of any actual announcements. It was a massive failure for the television and movie panels too - again, the numbers are shockingly bad, for a convention that took place entirely over social media there was nearly zero social media activity. So here's a bit of an autopsy, along with a couple of questions: is this the new normal, and if so, is there a place in it for Comic Con? I'm thinking we need to adapt to survive, and I have a couple of suggestions.

Comic Con 2020 has finally come to a close, although it's still available to you all over YouTube and the internet. This was, after all, the first "Comic Con at home," and while there were a few missteps it was well handled and, sadly, probably a sneak preview of the new normal. Some highlights include:
- This sneak peek at Rick and Morty Season 5: https://youtu.be/sPAw95c_AOE, as well as this charming anime short: https://youtu.be/-kdltv_CSHE
- The annual Eisner Awards: https://www.comic-con.org/awards/eisner-awards-current-info
- The Bill & Ted Face the Music panel: https://youtu.be/cgGNBPIk3q8
- This first look at Marvel's Helstrom, coming to Hulu: https://youtu.be/0RQYI1bRaqM
- A discussion with Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw about their upcoming Image series, Crossover: https://youtu.be/8C6gZ42kEzE
- The cast and showrunner of The Boys discussing the show's upcoming second season (and it's already been confirmed for season 3!): https://youtu.be/xOIqjCj-ADs
Comic Con at Home wasn't the only virtual fandom event taking place over the weekend: the Justice Con was all about the upcoming Snyder cut of Justice League, and featured spotlights on both Zack Snyder: https://youtu.be/xOIqjCj-ADs and Cyborg actor Ray Fisher: https://youtu.be/8lMIZmmYkH8
#SaveDaredevil was a much smaller event, but one with potentially huge ramifications, as actor Peter Shinkoda (Nobu) accuses Marvel's Jeph Loeb of racism: https://youtu.be/HqtYmvTEz4c

Marvel's new event, Empyre, has kicked off in earnest. It's a mess, as are the Fantastic Four, but above all it has me wondering: just what is the deal with Marvel and plants? Are their editors huge horticulture fans or just what is going on, from Empyre to the recent X-Men relaunch? Have a great weekend, and if you're reading Marvel maybe top yourself off by listening to Stevie Wonder's classic album The Secret Life of Plants.

Following on the heels of Justice League actor Ray Fisher accusing director Joss Whedon of bullying and unacceptable behavior, two of his former Buffy the Vampire Slayer crew members have come out with some scathing, and specific, allegations of abuse by Whedon. Former Buffy stunt coordinator Jeff Pruitt, and his wife, stunt double Sophia Crawford, have some damning things to say about Whedon's toxic and abusive treatment. In an article for The Express, Pruitt refers to Whedon as an 'egomaniac' who, among other things, demanded that Crawford break up with her fiancee or be forced off the show. He also threatened to blacklist Pruitt, and it seems as though he actually may have followed through on that threat to the best of his ability. Be prepared to lose all respect for Whedon as you read the disheartening details: https://metro.co.uk/2020/07/12/egomaniac-joss-whedon-faces-claims-buffy-stunt-double-12942160/

Justice League actor Ray Fisher, who played Cyborg in the film, has slammed Joss Whedon on Twitter. Although Fisher had previously praised Whedon's job taking over the film from Zack Snyder, who stepped down after a family tragedy, he has withdrawn that praise and on Wednesday described Whedon's on-set behavior as “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.” Fisher goes on to say that Whedon was "enabled, in many ways, by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg."
It is a changing narrative for Fisher, but sadly just the latest in what has been a litany of controversies for Whedon, as detailed in The Wrap: https://www.thecut.com/2020/07/joss-whedons-controversies-and-alleged-bad-behavior-a-guide.html
As with previous controversies, Whedon is not commenting on Fisher's remarks.

Comic creators are finally being called on years of grotesque harassment and abuse - but why has it taken years, and why were social media campaigns required to protect women in the workplace? It's a problem that has been going on for decades, and Dark Horse Comics even had one of the worst perpetrators, Scott Allie, in power as Editor-in-Chief before there was any kind of a reckoning, This calls for top-to-bottom regime replacement, to make workplaces safe. There's no excuse for this. And that's just one of many stories, which span across publishers and all the way to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund!
Also, yesterday we lost another comics legend: RIP legendary inker Joe Sinnott, best known as the embellisher of Jack Kirby's pencil work.
And, Doom Patrol is back with season 2! Check it out now on DC Universe or HBO Max.

I spent Father's Day taking care of my fur baby - my cat Bowie has an ear infection, but we're taking care of it. He hates the vet, but doing the hard stuff is part of being a cat-dad. My girlfriend gave me the present of an amazing ergonomic keyboard and mouse setup for my chair, so I'll be spending a lot more time podcasting from my new chair, that is fit for both Professor X and Metron - sorry, Wally West. I still hate his new role as Metron/Dr. Manhattan, and none of it explains the mess that is Dark Nights: Death Metal. I'm still not on board with DC's latest event, and for that matter I think the post-COVID comics industry can't afford any more of these convoluted events - I just hope that DC figures that out soon, and evolves appropriately.

It's the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, and the nation is again - still - in the midst of turmoil, racial injustice and a battle for change. Out president is having a rally in Tulsa, the sight of a horrific racist massacre which is depicted in HBO's Watchmen. For these reasons, HBO is streaming the excellent first season for free all weekend. If you haven't watched it yet, or if you're due for a rewatch, it's a great alternative to the grotesque celebration of racial tension that the president is exploiting. Because yet again, it's summer and we're running out of ice.
Additionally, there is a Humble Bundle for Racial Justice available - you can get $1,243 worth of games, books and comics for $30.00, all of which goes to charity, here: https://www.humblebundle.com/fight-for-racial-justice-bundle

DC Comics' new summer event, Dark Nights: Death Metal, has debuted with a first issue that is equal parts convoluted and silly, That doesn't mean it can't be fun - it's just not there yet. They are promoting the comic with a promotional video, featuring the Marilyn Manson track Warship My Wreck. The video is also silly, but kind of fun. New Comic Book Day has returned, after a fashion - but the stands are still pretty threadbare, and new comics releases are both in short supply and largely subpar. If you're looking for an all-time great comic to consume, I recommend Grant Morrison's career-launching run on Animal Man. It helped lead to the launch of Vertigo, brought meta-commentary and animal rights to comics, and holds up as a riveting read 30 years after it launched. You can buy Morrison's run on the series from Amazon, in Animal Man Omnibus Vol. 1, available now, and Vol. 2, available September 20 (affiliate links):

I've taken the week to digest the news of DC Comics parting ways with Diamond, which up until now has enjoyed being the sole distributor for all comics and related items. Many are alarmed at this move, which to me feels not only like it was necessary, but a healthy and rational business decision. Comics distribution is, after all, a business. And between Diamond's shocking failures when the pandemic hit, and the accompanying revelation of it's poor resources, DC's parent company AT&T made an emotionless, logical business decision. Feelings and loyalties are not an issue here. It's just basic, smart business.

While much of the world remains under lockdown, and many businesses remain closed, I've been taking some time to finally catch up on movies on my watchlist. As a huge fan of Blade Runner - probably my all-time favorite movie - I was nervous but excited to watch Blade Runner 2049. It did, after all, receive widespread acclaim from genre websites despite a poor box office showing. Well, I have lost faith in these websites, which fell over each other to praise this masturbatory insult to the Blade Runner name, which spends nearly three hours on nothing: beautiful shots which then linger and change angles over the course of 20 or so minutes, tepid shots of lead Ryan Gosling not speaking, taking action, or emoting, and a nonsensical plot that is really a series of unconnected and unexplained events. This was more than a bore, more than a disappointment - this is a movie that I couldn't enjoy on any level, and I question the integrity and tastes of those who praised it.

Raw Story, via Pro Publica, has a story about Marvel Entertainment chairman Ike Perlmutter using his 'shadow' influence over the VA to promote Marvel. Sounds nasty, but exhibit of of this nefarious influence peddling is this ridiculous video of Captain America and Spider-Man joining the VA in ringing the NYSE closing bell: https://youtu.be/NqNCftPe2jo
Sure, there's undoubtedly impropriety here - Perlmutter and Donald Trump pretty much live and breathe corruption - but I fail to see any injury caused here, and in this age of a presidency run amok, a pandemic being ignored, and a race-baiting war on civilians - how is this a story on anything other than my silly podcast? Please, if you see something worth remarking on here, let me know. I personally think we have far, far bigger concerns and I'm surprised to see Pro Publica wasting their journalistic resources on this fishing expedition.

The announcement that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is set for release on HBO Max in 2021 has led to a startling number of hot takes from the media, the upshot of which is that this is a win for “toxic fandom.” I respectfully disagree, as this follows a long tradition of successful fan campaigns, asking for better treatments or resurrections of media properties such as Community, Firefly, Arrested Development, and more. If the Snyder Cut is in fact the result of a studio caving to bullying, it’s hardly precedent-setting. Many of these same media outlets have championed this sort of behavior in the past.
Cyborg actor Ray Fisher, meanwhile, is elated that the Snyder Cut is being released. His character had very little in the way of backstory, or anything resembling a character arc, in the Justice League movie that was released in theaters. He believes, as many are reporting, that it will include scenes he filmed which flesh out the character’s past and explain his actions and motivations.

With the announcement of the Justice League Snyder cut being released on HBO Max, The Beat has published a thought-provoking article, arguing that this sets a “troubling precedent.” I’m not sure that this is a case of Warners caving to fan pressure as much as it is capitalizing on the free market research social media provides, but I do think that there is a danger of too many director’s cuts. Fans are already clamoring for the ‘Ayer Cut’ of Suicide Squad, which I don’t think they would enjoy. I don’t think it would make that messy movie any better, only expose the reasons why it was edited so frantically in the first place. And Paul Feig discussing a three and a half hour directors cut of Ghostbusters? Please, not even in jest!

Ruby Rose has quit the show ahead of a now-confirmed second season, and it's possible that the breakup was mutual.

Josh Trank is back with Capone, his first movie since 2015's ill-fated Fantastic Four. I was eager to see how Trank, who struck a chord with his debut film Chronicle, might attempt at redeeming himself and taking back the creative reigns of his own career. Instead, his pure vision (Trank is credited as Director, Writer, and Editor) produced a disgusting, disjointed and barely watchable snooze that somehow manages to make the legendary gangster boring. We never get to meet Capone or any of his family or loved ones before he has lost his mind and body to neurosyphilis, so his only actions consist of vile bodily excretions, and delusional rantings delivered in comical grunts by Tom Hardy, who does all he can to redeem the movie as the titular Alphonse Capone. Forget it, Tom - this is Redbox, the bizarro anti-Netflix where films with no redeeming value go to get financed and produced. This is Josh Trank, unadulterated and unfiltered, and it reeks.

Walking Dead consulting producer LaToya Morgan participated in a Buzzfeed article about how the global pandemic is changing television production. For her part, she says that the show is using a Zoom-based writer's room which is surprisingly getting more accomplished, at a faster pace, than before. Working from home is perhaps something that writers of an apocalypse-themed show were uniquely prepared for, but Morgan's comments are illuminating and the unexpectedly positive changes could have ramifications for how TWD, if not television in general, proceeds once this crisis is over.
Speaking of The Walking Dead and Zoom, AMC has released Zoom backgrounds featuring some of their most popular shows. That includes, of course, The Walking Dead, as well as Better Call Saul, Killing Eve, Dispatches from Elsewhere and more. You can download those here: https://www.amc.com/talk/2020/04/spice-up-your-video-calls-with-backgrounds-from-your-favorite-amc-networks-shows
Meanwhile, Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman is suing mobile developer Disruptor Beam Inc., for failing to make payments on the now-defunct mobile game "Walking Dead: March to War." Kirkman believes he is owed, and is suing for, $690,000. This per TMZ, who managed to get an exclusive first look at some of the legal documents: TMZ uses extremely informal language, but the article seems to suggest that Kirkman is suing not a jury trial, but rather an injunction forcing Disruptor Beam to make good on their delinquent payments.

Yesterday, actor/streamers Rahul Kohli and Jacob Fullerton got steadily more intoxicated while reciting the script to Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. On the Season 5 finale of Better Call Saul, Kim Wexler and Lalo Salamanca show us that they are not to be underestimated. Kim finally breaks bad, and Lalo becomes the most dangerous thing you would ever want to encounter - a wounded animal, one who appears to be wise to his betrayer. As Saul Goodman will go on to say in Breaking Bad, “It wasn’t me, it was Ignacio!” "Something Unforgivable" asks more questions than it answers, but is easily the best episode of the season, and in my opinion the best television of 2020 to date.
