Driver Safety - Does it Matter?

Driver Safety - Does it Matter?

The Mavericks sit down with Dr. Teri Cassidy of Fitness to Drive which specializes in services for driver safety. Dr. Terri Cassidy started Health Promotion Partners in 2018 in response to a need in the community. Many hospital-based programs for driver rehabilitation had closed across the state and families were left to make decisions about driving without comprehensive medical and performance-based assessment. Terri’s vision was to create a program where she could offer excellence in driver rehabilitation and expand the scope of services to work with drivers of all ages. The foundation of this vision is the belief that we can influence health throughout the lifespan by helping clients select and engage in meaningful life activities. Driving can be key to accessing those activities. We have driving clinics in Colorado Springs, Westminster, and Fort Collins. #driversafety #olderadults #familycaregivers #caregiving #cars #automobiles

Grief! - Life, loving, death and dying

Grief! - Life, loving, death and dying

Grief is within us all. We never actually get rid of grief. The question is how can we share grief with others because it's in us all. The Mavericks have the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Eric Rooney, founder of Regeneration Earth. Mr. Rooney has been passionate about nature, regeneration, and caring for humans as a farmer, storyteller, visionary, founder, death doula, and speaker. His farm in Lakewood, Colorado Half Moon Farm, provides flowers, food, education, and gatherings for the community and also works with green funeral homes to return human compost and water cremation fertilizer to Earth. Grief is a transformational emotion that is brought on by the intense pain and sense of loss felt maybe after a loved one dies but not always. It is a common human experience that enables people to get back into the swing of things, mend relationships with others, and discover hope for a future full of possibilities for development and healing. When grief is accepted and shared with others, it has the innate ability to settle unresolved emotional issues, promote healing, and foster personal growth. #grief #living #dying #love #hospice #aging #holidays

The Mavericks are sitting down with Dr. Marvin Berman to get an understanding of their incredible system, Neuradiant 1070.

What is Neuradiant 1070? I'm glad you asked - You'll have to watch the show to get an amazing understanding but on the surface, it's designed to keep the brain capacity in all stages of life high!

Photobiomodulation?? Don't worry we will have a deeper discussion on the show. Simply put - Photobiomodulation is otherwise known as light therapy.

Light therapy involves the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver a specific wavelength of light that can be absorbed by cells in the body. The LED type determines the wavelength of light and can be tuned to a particular tissue or organ.

Fortunately, we have Dr. Berman on the show who is a co-founder and will provide an incredible breath of knowledge on Photobiomodulation and Neuradiant.

Bright Spot #11: Saving The Stories

Bright Spot #11: Saving The Stories

No, that's not a typo "ARTIFCTS" - it's more than meets the eye! It's an incredible platform for not only saving memories while decluttering but also connecting. Join us for an incredible discussion around preserving, remembering, and connecting with "Stuff". The Mavericks are sitting down with co-founder, Ellen Goodwin. Founders Heather and Ellen grew up together at the CIA, sharing a common mission and gaining an appreciation for the value of information and security at work and at home. The pair went on to conquer the private sector, rising to executive positions while staying true to themselves and their families. In a year unlike any other, they teamed up to build something entirely new; to create a secure space to preserve and share not only personal history but world history, one Artifct at a time. As co-founder and CEO, Heather Nickerson, states, "Following my mother’s death, I was frustrated because I had her stuff, but what I really wanted were her stories. The who, what, when, where, and why behind the objects. Why did she have a certain item? Where did it come from? When did she get it? Sadly, the objects could not tell her story. Only my mother could have done that, and she was no longer here. That was the genesis of Artifcts—an overwhelming desire to ensure that anyone anywhere would have a safe and secure way to pass down stories, not just things." Their vision is truly transforming the way we save, remember, and connect not only with the past but also the future.

The Mavericks are beyond excited to sit and speak with Carrie AalbertsDementia Darling

We believe that we must challenge that status quo and improve the way we age. Dementia Darling’s Mission is to make sure NO caregiver feels alone in their journey! Her hope is to reach as many people as possible to reduce the stigma about dementia and caregiving through sharing information and experiences.

Carrie has incredible respect for caregivers across the entire lifespan. However, in her professional life, she has worked mainly with dementia families and professional caregivers. She has a Master of Science focused on Gerontology (study of aging) and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Carrie has been a professional caregiver on and off for the last ten years.

As our Chief Curiosity Maverick, Francis LeGasse, says, “A Dementia Diagnosis is not the end but a change in the ending!” Together we can create an improved future for the way we age especially those living with Dementia!

Bright Spot #6: Collaborative Transition from Physician to Hospice Care

The Mavericks are fortunate enough to speak with Dr. Andrew Mayo, Chief Medical Officer of St. Croix Hospice. Dr. Mayo, great grandson of the founders of the Mayo Clinic, spent many years as a family physician. When he was asked to help with hospice care, he wasn't sure as the training given to physicians is to save lives. He, like many other physicians, wondered if hospice care was giving up on someone. As we continue with our Bright Spots series, we want to dive into the importance for all healthcare providers, especially hospice to focus on the whole person and on better collaboration with family physicians. The St. Croix Hospice Difference: Not all hospices are the same. As hospice care providers, St. Croix Hospice listens to patients and families to understand their individual wishes for the end-of-life care journey. With a focus on comfort and quality of life, our hospice teams across the Midwest provide care with dignity and respect. Talk to an expert to see how our award-winning teams can serve you, wherever you call home.

Bright Spot #4: Infusion for Diabetes Type 1 & 2 - What if....

What if... There was an improved way to administer insulin? What if... The number of daily injections decreased for someone living with Diabetes? What if... Insulin was administered as a hormone rather than a drug? The Mavericks sit down with Dr. Andrew Allen of Spruce Health Group to talk about this amazing infusion Treatment. Learn about the backstory, the why and the how. Why the way insulin is infused matters for an improved outcome of those living with Diabetes 1 & 2 but also other Metabolic Conditions. As Spruce Health States," What is Diabetes and Metabolic Therapies (DMT)? DMT is a groundbreaking treatment where insulin is administered as a hormone rather than a drug; addressing the primary cause of Diabetes which is a metabolic failure. By utilizing insulin in a manner that bio-mimics normal physiology, this modality is designed to reduce insulin resistance and increase cellular energy. Increasing cellular energy allows damaged tissues and organs to grow, repair, and regenerate. Thus, our approach not only stabilizes but in many instances has reversed complications of diabetes and other metabolic disorders."

Bright Spot Episode #2: Forest Bathing with Dr. Michelle Olson

Forest bathing...What an incredible concept. No, it's not exactly what you're thinking. We aren't taking baths in the forest, however, I'm sure one could be worked in. We are looking at the benefits of connecting our older adults, especially those living with Dementia to the outdoors. We are truly blessed to have Dr. Michelle Olson, Founder & Executive Director of Evergreen Minds joining us today. Dr. Olson is a social gerontologist, a licensed, board-certified, and registered creative arts therapist, a certified dementia care consultant, a certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, and a Certified Forest Therapy Guide. Dr. Olson was inspired by her father, Dr. Lee Olson, who was a plant biochemist and encouraged her to appreciate and respect all of nature (weeds, bugs, and all!) So what is Forest Bathing? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors and the concentration of air pollutants can be 2 to 5 times higher than out in nature! Shinrin-yoku or ‘Forest Bathing’ is the evidenced-based practice of spending time in the woods. Now let's talk about the physiological health benefits of being in nature! Decreases inflammation Increases immune system Improves cardiovascular health Reduces stress, depression, and anxiety Improves sleep Lowers blood sugar Boosts parasympathetic nervous system (which makes us feel so good!) Dr. Olson and her team have an incredible mission to offer people living with dementia opportunities for meaningful connections and pathways to physical, social, and emotional well-being through mindful immersions in nature and expressive arts. #seniorcare #arttherapy #nature #forestbathing #getoutside #seniorliving #dementia #dementiacare #dementiaawareness #outside #expressiveart #caringforothers #innature

MYTH #5! Medicaid Will Be There To Help If You Need It

MYTH #5! Medicaid Will Be There To Help If You Need It

What is going on? Why is no one talking about the struggles facing Medicaid in Colorado? 200 Medicaid beds were lost in Colorado in January 2023 for Assisted Living. This doesn’t even factor into account the lack of Secured Memory Care beds for Medicaid.

This is a huge opportunity to truly look at the system that got us here. We can’t fix the old system we have to think beyond and go upstream to solve the challenge. Most likely there will not be a one-stop solution but a multitude of solutions to help tackle the ever-growing challenge of affordability.

2022 In Review And Some 2023 Predications

2022 In Review And Some 2023 Predications

Francis & Katherine review top news in senior care each month of 2022. And we make some predications about the coming year.

  • Long-term care is a half-trillion-dollar industry.
  • There are about 65,000 regulated long-term care facilities in the United States.
  • 8.3 million people get support from five primary nursing care providers every year.
  • 60% of people and families can’t pay for the expenses that nursing services require for them to house the elderly.
  • 70% over 65 will need long-term medical care at some point in their life.

Such care is usually given for three years on average. This is our aging services industry.

Though we are undergoing a massive generational and digital transformation, now is the time for a change. We must challenge and create opportunities for those who are currently aging and for the future of aging.

How To Non-Intrusively Know That Mom Is Ok – The Future of Senior Care with Marlo Vernon

How To Non-Intrusively Know That Mom Is Ok – The Future of Senior Care with Marlo Vernon

"After my great-aunt passed away living alone at home, I watched my parents anxiety grow when my grandmother didn't answer her phone. So I looked for a way to give us all peace of mind."

Marlo VernonFounder & CEO, CarePenguin

The Mavericks sit down with Marlo Vernon a recent graduate from the University of Colorado - Boulder.

Marlo has a passion to impact the way we age and improve the lives of our older adults. Marlo's story is like so many. Her goal was to impact her grandmother's life in a positive way.

Marlo shares her perspectives on why she chose to head down the path of Senior Care. Also, she will share her vision of the future of how we age and what really is important to stand out for young entrepreneurs. Marlo is the founder and CEO of CarePenguin.

CarePenguin was inspired by Marlo’s grandmother who wasn’t answering her phone one day. After many missed calls and text messages, her family grew increasingly concerned, especially because Grandma’s sister had just passed away months earlier from a stroke while living alone. Marlo’s family ended up calling security to check in on her and found that she was completely fine. ‍

There must be a way to keep tabs on our elderly loved ones without making them feel like they’re living under a microscope or breaking the bank. ‍ Coming from a family of nerds, Marlo’s father and now CTO of CarePenguin, Todd Vernon came up with a simple, non-invasive, inexpensive solution.

We are excited to bring you CarePenguin!

Legacy Planning - The Ultimate Gift

Legacy Planning - The Ultimate Gift

"It was a time when I felt the most frustrated, exhausted and isolated than I've ever felt in my life. I've made it my mission in life to help other people NOT feel that way."  ~Michelle Adams, Author & Estate Planning Attorney

The Mavericks sit down with Attorney Michelle Adams to talk Legacy Planning. It is such an important tool and process. Join us as Attorney Adams navigates us on the reasons why we must plan!

Michelle Adam started this firm because she had personally experienced what happens when a loved one fails to plan for their death or disability. Attorney Adams knows that this is not necessarily a “dinner time” topic but we must take the steps to have these conversations so that family stress and drama are minimized in the long run. She enjoys working with people to help them come up with the best solutions for their situation and giving them a measure of comfort that they are prepared and have provided for their loved ones if something should happen to them.

A significant portion of her practice focuses on the needs of parents of minor children who want to ensure that they have put solid plans in place for the protection of their children. As a mom, she is acutely aware that if something were to happen to her, her family would be tremendously impacted. However, she knows that one of the best gifts she can give them would be to take the simple steps of getting my plans in order.
In addition to my legal practice, she strongly believes in giving back to the community.

Michelle volunteers time to several organizations including Denver CASA, Denver Great Kids Head Start, Denver Center for Crime Victims, Volunteers of America and the Denver Bar Association’s School and Lawyers Committee.

Originally from New York City, she earned her B.A. in Administration of Justice from the Pennsylvania State University and my J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. For the past 17 years, she and her family have called Colorado home and we take advantage of all this great state has to offer!

The Unexpected Caregiver – Love, Compassion & Stress

"I had no training, no medical background. I just loved my mom. So I spent the next 8 years being her caregiver."

Breeda MillerHumor, Heartache and Dementia

The Mavericks sit down with Ms. Breeda Miller to talk about all caregiving. Ms. Miller was an accidental caregiver. She had no training, no medical background. She didn't know what she didn't know. Ms. MIller just knew she loved my mom and she couldn't live on her own any longer. So she moved in with her family and for nearly 8 years we cared for her.

It was good, until it wasn't.

Ms. Miller learned so much during those years, including hospice care in her home. Living in the Sandwich Generation taught her more about life than she could ever have imagined. Now Ms. Miller shares those life lessons with others who need help navigating this challenging time. Ready for Your Dream Vacation even if living with Alzheimer's/Dementia?

"Accessible travel ensures that every moment of a dream trip can be enjoyed without restrictions - regardless of diagnosis. We cater to those with diagnoses such as Dementia/Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, Diabetes, etc., as well as their caregivers and family members to create extraordinary lifetime memories together." ~Kathy Speer Shoaf, RNOwner, Elite Travel

Imagine taking a loved one living with dementia, Parkinsons, or any other issue that might make it difficult to travel, on a cruise! Chief Inspiration Maverick, Katherine Wells, recalls her father’s desire for an Alaskan cruise right up until he passed. Not being able to see how it would be manageable with his high care needs, it was not ever considered an option. But thanks to our guest today, Kathy Shoaf, it is absolutely possible!

Kathy Shoaf, RN, is uniquely qualified to understand travel challenges for those living with an issue that prevents them – and often their caregiver – from the enjoyment of traveling. So she set out to solve it!

Kathy launched an dementia-friendly cruise opportunity that takes care of every detail for the care recipient allowing a true respite for caregivers. Yet they also get to enjoy time together and create invaluable memories. Kathy personally accompanies each and every cruise group and sometimes even brings her parents along!  Since 2005 they’ve been helping people across the nation take their dream vacations to some of the most beautiful spots in the world. She specializes in accessible travel and ensures that every moment of the trip can be enjoyed without restrictions. Their custom cruises and travel events cater to those with diagnoses such as Dementia/Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, Diabetes, etc., as well as their caregivers and family members.

We hope you enjoy this episode!

And if you’re curious about how qualified Kathy Shoaf is to do this, she has 20+ years of clinical and management experience in Geriatric, Neurology, Rehabilitation, and Senior Housing as a registered nurse and adaptive technology professional. She is a Certified Dementia Educator, A Certified Accessible Travel Specialist, a Fellow at the American College of Healthcare, an Athena Nominated Senior Care Advocate, and an American Express Travel Agency Award Winner. Can You Have Engaged Residents Without Engaged Staff?

Can You Have Engaged Residents Without Engaged Staff?

About The Episode

There's a lot of talk about engagement in the senior care industry. Engagement is often called Life Enrichment or Activities in senior living communities. Exercising mental and emotional health is undoubtedly of enormous significance in the overall wellbeing of any human.

So, why then, does "Activities" often have a lower budget with fewer resources than other senior care departments?

We had a great discussion about elevating quality of life through engagement with the dynamic Sara Kyle, PhD  and Kelly Stranburg of LE3 Solutions.  They also share three key elements to improve daily life for both residents and staff. After all, it is an ecosystem and it is necessary to collaborate and work together.

  • Focus on movement, creative curiosities, address grief and emotions of the past year
  • Role of families will continue to grow figure out how to embrace and partner with family members
  • Technology kept many families together during the pandemic.

LE3 Solutions is a strategic consulting firm supporting operators/providers and vendors in the senior living space and beyond with the objective to elevate engagement and well-being for residents and staff as well as those choosing to age in place and their caregivers.
